Summary

Immortality: A Love Story is the eagerly anticipated sequel to Dana Schwartz's bestselling gothic romance, Anatomy: A Love Story

Hazel Sinnett is alone and half-convinced the events of the year before—the immortality, Beecham’s vial—were a figment of her imagination。 She doesn’t even know whether Jack is alive or dead。 All she can really do now is treat patients and maintain Hawthornden Castle as it starts to decay around her。

When saving a life leads to her arrest, Hazel seems doomed to rot in prison until a message intervenes: She has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly daughter of King George IV。 Soon Hazel is dragged into the glamor and romance of a court where everyone has something to hide, especially the enigmatic, brilliant members of a social club known as the Companions to the Death。

As Hazel’s work entangles her more and more with the British court, she realizes that her own future as a surgeon isn't the only thing at stake。 Malicious forces are at work in the monarchy, and Hazel may be the only one capable of setting things right。

I think this one was even better than the first one! There were still some spots where something felt off in the vibes but that was resolved for me eventually and that didn't take to long to fix。 Not perfect but I thought that this was a really enjoyable read that felt new。 I would recommend this duology for anyone looking for something that's a little bit dark academia but with less of the murder-mystery stuff that's common in the genre。 I would also recommend this for people who wished Kenneth I think this one was even better than the first one! A little slow to start but I loved it all the same。 Incredible writing as always, amazing swoon worthy characters, and the famous historical appearances are a history nerds dream! Same beautiful, macabre, gritty story we know combined with tender love and heart。 A very satisfying and lovely end to a beautiful duology。

Wth。 This author tried to put a trendy, modern situation in a book that is set 200 years ago。 Give us a break。I feel like the plot would've been so much better and would've resonated more with readers if the Princess Charlotte had fallen in love with a servant of her castle who was A MALE。 There's no need to make it a lesbian thing。Hazel still could've walked in on them, discovered their secret, and then planned to help them run away。There were several times where the dialogue was not fitting vocabulary for the time period setting (1818)。 That was a bit annoying。 No one said, "Hey!", in 1818。 🤦🏻‍♂️ Simon deserved better。 He was a great person。 Why did Dana even throw him in the book? Unnecessary, sloppy love triangle。Here are just some of the cringey parts of the book:1。 "I can survive a hanging and a stabbing and shipwreck and starvation,” he said。 “And I still wouldn’t ever dare to do anything as foolish as standing up Hazel Sinnett。” -Jack2。 The entire evening had become a runaway carriage, and the horses were now running too fast and too wild for Hazel to know how to get them trotting back on the road again。3。 “François-Marie Arouet, at your service。 Also known as—” Hazel’s eyes went wide。 “Voltaire。 Voltaire! The Voltaire。 Surely not。 I can’t believe I just performed surgery on … Voltaire。 I’m rambling now。 Forgive me。 It’s just, I thought you were…”4。 The conversation continued, and a warmth began to radiate from Hazel’s belly。 It was a rare gift, Hazel thought, to be surrounded by intelligent people who actually cared what you had to say。 (Boring。 Cringe。 No one cares。)Here's a sweet line from Jack, but it doesn't mean much to me because this whole book was trash:"I will give you everything I am。 If you find a … a cure, or if you don’t—there is no world in which I want to be apart from you ever again。” -JackDr。 Beecham was awesome in book one。 It's a shame (although I really don't care that much anymore) that he was barely thrown in this book at the end for like 20 seconds。 Why didn't Hazel ask him more questions about the immortality tincture or keep in contact with him so that she has a resource whenever she may need it?Also, Hazel and Jack have to two kids together?! Are they immortal? Do they grow? This book's ending is sloppy and boring; not satisfying。 I'm so done with young adult books。Annoying book, and a really ugly cover。 Just read the first one (Anatomy) and invent your own ending for them。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! Immortality is the second installment in the story of Hazel Sinnett。 While I didn't read the first book, Anatomy, I would say that I was generally underwhelmed by this story。 I loved the descriptions of the era, the history of medicine and inclusion of several key figures。 After that, it was a remarkably quick read but lacked a lot of substance。 The romances left me wanting more and the twists and turns did not have as much of an impact as t Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! I really enjoyed this sequel to Anatomy。 I started reading Anatomy last year when I was trying to get into reading again and ironically while my husband was having his first surgery。 I felt like I read the first book really slow but I enjoyed it so much and when it ended, I was so ready to find out what happens next! And this book delivered!! I feel like the flow of Immortality was really good!! And I loved all the new characters!!

This was an enjoyable sequel, but I liked the first one much better。 While literally called a love story, the first book felt more focused on the medical aspects of the story and I was very interested in the machinations of a young woman of the time trying to become a doctor。 This book was far more intent on the romance and on, well, immortality than I am really interested in reading。 But it was well written and I was still invested in the characters!

The covers of this duology will forever draw me in。 They are stunning which is a complete understatement。 This is the second book in a YA historical gothic fantasy romance centering around the female main character Hazel Sinnet。 Book One wraps you into the story of Hazel with her love of surgery, her journey to becoming one of the few female physicians of the time, and her young love story with Jack。 To be transparent I would've been happy if book one was the conclusion of Hazel's story as I fel The covers of this duology will forever draw me in。 They are stunning which is a complete understatement。 This is the second book in a YA historical gothic fantasy romance centering around the female main character Hazel Sinnet。 Book One wraps you into the story of Hazel with her love of surgery, her journey to becoming one of the few female physicians of the time, and her young love story with Jack。 To be transparent I would've been happy if book one was the conclusion of Hazel's story as I felt the second book lacked not only in plot but also relevance and substance。 It took me a long time to get into this book and I'm not sure that I ever truly did。 Much like the first book this also had what felt like endless filler content that leaned more to aid in filling out the length of the text and less as a needed addition to the content。 The number of times I had to step away was frustrating。 In book one once I was past the slump of the book I found myself immersed in the story。 I kept picking up this novel with the same hope as well。 If I could just get past this part then I'll fall in。 With 30-35% left of the book, the plot seemed to kick in。 All that to say it does not mean that I didn't find aspects of this story enjoyable。 More so I found the duology as a whole moving。 Book 1 creates a beautiful ache in the budding romance between Jack and Hazel。 Even with a more somber ending you still find yourself much in a position of hope as Hazel does within the second book。 She is hopeful as she thinks back to her time with Jack。 The romance in this book does not contain the same burn but it is a bright spot within the book。 I also loved the pull of a mystery in her circumstance that starts with the girl on her doorstep, her eventual arrest, and a very new predicament she found herself in while being the personal physician to Princess Charlotte。I also really love the author's ability to add in her strength of capturing history as it was。 I have read many historical fictions that do not live up to providing accurate depictions of the time that are written within。 That is not the case in this book。 Ms。 Schwartz has a way of dropping subtle depictions of the time that allows you to not only recognize that she is knowledgeable of the era she is writing within but making it relatable that regardless of the timeframe you feel a part of the characters and story itself。 Not many have the ability to do so。 While I am tough in my critiques of the book overall this aspect alone had me driving up my rating。Thanks go out to Netgalley, St Martin's Press &Wednesday Books for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

As much as I hate to admit it(don't actually), I fell so in love with the first bosk because of how similar it was to Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalo。 Though this isn't that far off from those books either, I'm sorta disappointed by this one。 The cover is stunning, just like the first one but I feel like this book is incomplete。It veers off path from the first one, which would have been completely fine but a few characters are either ignored, or just kinda hanging limply around, whic As much as I hate to admit it(don't actually), I fell so in love with the first bosk because of how similar it was to Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalo。 Though this isn't that far off from those books either, I'm sorta disappointed by this one。 The cover is stunning, just like the first one but I feel like this book is incomplete。It veers off path from the first one, which would have been completely fine but a few characters are either ignored, or just kinda hanging limply around, which is awkward。Speaking of awkward, Hazel seems so detached from this。 It's almost like she's watching herself from a distant and narrating to us in bland tones。 I don't know if this was the same as the first book and I just noticed it now, or if the writing slipped。While I think the plot was, let's just say well-concocted, the whole mystery part wa completely off。 I was surprised by absolutely nothing and got annoyed with the book multiple times when it treated something so obvious with any sort of surprise。I don't know if my floppy reaction to this book is due to the high expectations I had of it and how painfully they were dashed, but I think it could do so much better。 。。。more

I was so excited for a second book。 I feel like it was a very nice way to end the story。 I loved the way a certain historical character gives the “Anastasia” affect。 Instead of going with what really happened to her。 I’m glad I preordered both books。 I know I will read these multiple times!

Only a couple of months ago I read Anatomy: A Love Story, this series' first novel, and was delighted to find that there was a sequel coming out。 I love Dana Schwartz's podcast, Noble Blood, and so I was pretty much the prime audience for this book: morbid but romantic, with some supernatural elements and nobility thrown in。Fun writing, likeable characters, and a more engaging and high-stakes plot。 Great! Perfect!! This book did everything you want a great sequel to do: expands the world, complicates the central relationship。。。 and introduces a secret society of immortals!Dana's writing is so accessible and fun, but it never feels surface-level。 The emotions ring true, and we KNOW the foundational research is air tight。 Deeply sad to let these characters go, but I can't wait to see what the author writes next。 Perfect!! Without a doubt, 2 of the most beautiful book covers I have ever seen。 You almost can’t stop staring at them。 I remember when I realized, with the first book, what I was actually looking at and thinking, no way。 Genius。 On to the book。 I adored Anatomy, the whole thing was an original, bittersweet, fabulous story。 And I absolutely understand the need to give Hazel and…others…a finale。 Unfortunately, this second installment didn’t really do it for me。 While I was happy to revisit these characters Without a doubt, 2 of the most beautiful book covers I have ever seen。 You almost can’t stop staring at them。 I remember when I realized, with the first book, what I was actually looking at and thinking, no way。 Genius。 On to the book。 I adored Anatomy, the whole thing was an original, bittersweet, fabulous story。 And I absolutely understand the need to give Hazel and…others…a finale。 Unfortunately, this second installment didn’t really do it for me。 While I was happy to revisit these characters, and the historical detail was very well done (again), it was a bit lackluster, felt rushed, a little thin, and and not quite there。However, I loved the introduction of Simon, and was ultimately torn about his being dangled like a prize you couldn’t have。 I almost wish Schwartz’s next book would involve him。 (I’m sure there must be mysteries to solve in Sweden as well, right?) Dana Schwartz‘s Immortality is the second book of a historical/science fiction duology。 Like its predecessor, this is a fast paced book with lovable characters (and some villains)。 While clearly not set in the present, Schwartz makes characters relatable。 Hazel’s determination is what propels the plot forward, but this is very much a new story in a new setting, with new characters。 Most of the book is spent setting up this new story rather than resolving the unsolved plot points of the previous Dana Schwartz‘s Immortality is the second book of a historical/science fiction duology。 Like its predecessor, this is a fast paced book with lovable characters (and some villains)。 While clearly not set in the present, Schwartz makes characters relatable。 Hazel’s determination is what propels the plot forward, but this is very much a new story in a new setting, with new characters。 Most of the book is spent setting up this new story rather than resolving the unsolved plot points of the previous book。 To avoid spoilers I will be vague- it felt like we didn’t get enough time with a certain character from the first book and that reunion seemed too easy。 I definitely enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to reading more of Schwartz’s work! Thanks to Wednesday Books and NetGalley for the eARC for my honest review。 。。。more
