Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime story of one man's coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
Michiko Kakutani, New York Times - USA Today - San Francisco Chronicle - NPR - Esquire - Newsday - Booklist

Trevor Noah's unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth。 Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison。 Living proof of his parents' indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away。 Finally liberated by the end of South Africa's tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle。

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist。 It is also the story of that young man's relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother--his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life。

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting。 Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty。 His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother's unconventional, unconditional love。

Praise for Born a Crime

"[A] compelling new memoir 。 。 。 By turns alarming, sad and funny, [Trevor Noah's] book provides a harrowing look, through the prism of Mr。 Noah's family, at life in South Africa under apartheid。 。 。 。 Born a Crime is not just an unnerving account of growing up in South Africa under apartheid, but a love letter to the author's remarkable mother。"--Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

"[An] unforgettable memoir。"--Parade

"What makes Born a Crime such a soul-nourishing pleasure, even with all its darker edges and perilous turns, is reading Noah recount in brisk, warmly conversational prose how he learned to negotiate his way through the bullying and ostracism。 。 。 。 What also helped was having a mother like Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah。 。 。 。 Consider Born a Crime another such gift to her--and an enormous gift to the rest of us。" --USA Today

"[Noah] thrives with the help of his astonishingly fearless mother。 。 。 。 Their fierce bond makes this story soar。" --People

How you can make a fun to read book about Apartheid in RSA? Trevor made it and amid all the horrors of his story I admire his ability for a reader to see his brighter days as well。

I love a well-written memoir, and Trevor Noah’s is great。 I don’t watch the Daily Show and have only tuned in to his show on occasion at best, so I went into his book knowing nothing about him。 My favorite way to read a new book。 This memoir is so much more than I expected。 I loved his anecdotes on life in South Africa and the facts on Apartheid, on which my knowledge is strongly lacking。 Appreciated his take on tough topics like racism and gender norms, and recognizing someone’s language/cultur I love a well-written memoir, and Trevor Noah’s is great。 I don’t watch the Daily Show and have only tuned in to his show on occasion at best, so I went into his book knowing nothing about him。 My favorite way to read a new book。 This memoir is so much more than I expected。 I loved his anecdotes on life in South Africa and the facts on Apartheid, on which my knowledge is strongly lacking。 Appreciated his take on tough topics like racism and gender norms, and recognizing someone’s language/culture - all with a light, comedic undertone/current。 “You can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited。” “We live in a world where we don’t see the ramifications of what we do to others, because we don’t live with them。” “When you make the effort to speak someone else’s language, you’re saying to them, “I understand you have a culture and identity that exists beyond me。 I see you as a human being。” 。。。more

Страхотен комедиен талант, дори и в писмена форма。 Има много негативни аспекти и проблеми в живота му, но са представени с такова чувство на хумор, че не натоварват。Насладих се на историята, смях се доста。

I had heard so many great things about this book, and the hype was well deserved。 Trevor Noah takes us through a series of short stories that highlight was his childhood and young adult hood was growing up in South Africa。 I have to say I have not been exposed to much information about this region of the world, so this was an eye opening book and very educational that Noah paired with comedic relief throughout the book。 All the while, it also reads as a love note to his tough-loving, brave, stro I had heard so many great things about this book, and the hype was well deserved。 Trevor Noah takes us through a series of short stories that highlight was his childhood and young adult hood was growing up in South Africa。 I have to say I have not been exposed to much information about this region of the world, so this was an eye opening book and very educational that Noah paired with comedic relief throughout the book。 All the while, it also reads as a love note to his tough-loving, brave, strong willed mom。 If you haven’t read this yet, I recommend you do as soon as you can! 。。。more

Trevor Noah told his story in a way that made the brutality of apartheid completely clear, yet gave this book so much light and joy through his story telling skills。 One of the best books I’ve ever read, I could hardly put it down。

Hilarious and heartbreaking。 Trevor teaches readers about the messed up systems of apartheid and the injustices faced in his own life through a series of hilarious anecdotes and sad truths faced by many South Africans。 “People love to say “give a man a fish, and he’ll eat for a day。 Teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime” What they don’t say is “and it would be nice if you gave him a fishing rod。” That’s the part of the analogy that’s always missing。”

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! it was amazing, definitely the best memoir i've ever read (even though that is a very short list)。 i've been meaning to read this for a very long time and i'm so glad i finally picked it up; i actually listened to the audiobook which was such a good experience。 the way trevor noah narrates the story is soo stunning and descriptive。 nothing felt out of place, boring, or redundant。 every part of the story felt intentional and perfectly paced。 he clearly had something to say and I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! it was amazing, definitely the best memoir i've ever read (even though that is a very short list)。 i've been meaning to read this for a very long time and i'm so glad i finally picked it up; i actually listened to the audiobook which was such a good experience。 the way trevor noah narrates the story is soo stunning and descriptive。 nothing felt out of place, boring, or redundant。 every part of the story felt intentional and perfectly paced。 he clearly had something to say and knew exactly how to say it。 also something i liked was that unlike a lot of other celebrity memoirs, this one wasn't just taking you through his whole life story from birth to adult and how he got famous and all, it wasn't about that。 it was about his childhood and how he was raised and the experiences he's had influenced him and made him the person he is today。 i loved all the stories and it was a perfect mix of light and bubbly but also emotional and profound。 some of them are sooo funny like i love all the accents he does and the dialogues he says (i know it's a nonfiction book but his mum was my favourite character。 from what he said about her and all the scenes that she was in, she seems so freaking iconic like i just love her what a queen)。 anyways i would definitely recommend this!! amazing!!! 。。。more

I really enjoyed this memoir。 I don't generally watch talk shows, so I'm not really familiar with Trevor Noah's comedy, but now I'm interested in knowing more about his story and how he ended up in the USA。 I laughed out loud several times while reading Born a Crime -- the two times that come to mind are the first chapter when he was describing his Sundays full of white church, black church, and colored church, and the chapter entitled "Go Hitler。" (Spoiler: he had a friend named Hitler, and the I really enjoyed this memoir。 I don't generally watch talk shows, so I'm not really familiar with Trevor Noah's comedy, but now I'm interested in knowing more about his story and how he ended up in the USA。 I laughed out loud several times while reading Born a Crime -- the two times that come to mind are the first chapter when he was describing his Sundays full of white church, black church, and colored church, and the chapter entitled "Go Hitler。" (Spoiler: he had a friend named Hitler, and they booked a deejay/dancing gig at a Jewish school。。。 I never really thought about how Adolf Hitler is the worst person in the world only in the eyes of the west。 In some parts of the world, like South Africa, there are worse villains and Hitler is just a name。) There's a little bit of bad language but I recommend this book to practically anyone, anyway。 Come for the humor, stay for the education and the relationship between Trevor and his mother; it's truly heartwarming。 。。。more

This was a unique type of book。 Trevor Noah intertwines South African history / socioeconomic dynamics with stories of his own youth。 They all seem a bit unrelated until the final chapter。 I expected this to be more about Trevor Noah the comedian but it really wasn’t at all, and that was fine。 Easy to read and highly recommend!

I like the personality of Trevor Noah, and reading his autobiography raised my sympathy for him even more。 I dived into the life of a little boy who grew up in the period of apartheid and experienced the South African world through his eyes—loved the book。

This was easy to give 5 stars to。 I listened to this on audiobook and was glad I did because Trevor Noah reads it and his voice is just lovely。 I did not know much about the South African Apartheid before reading this。 I liked how this was about his experience of the Apartheid, being born to a white mother and a black father, and not his comedy carrer。 This book was fascinating and shocking。 Highly recommend。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Full disclosure : did not finish the book。 Read about 60% of it。 The first part of the story is great (and very tragic) historial stories around the time of apartheid。 Towards the middle of the book, the stories of Trevor’s teenage life seemed to drag on with too many details, when the moral of the specific situation could have been summarized a little better。 But, if you like lots of details of situations , then you’d like that part。
