Late one night a man walks into the luxurious home of disgraced banker Harry McNamara and his wife Julie。 The man launches an unspeakably brutal attack on Harry as a horror-struck Julie watches, frozen by fear。

Just an hour later the attacker, JP Carney, has handed himself in to the police。 He confesses to beating Harry to death, but JP claims that the assault was not premeditated and that he didn't know the identity of his victim。 With a man as notorious as Harry McNamara, the detectives cannot help wondering, was this really a random act of violence or is it linked to one of Harry's many sins: corruption, greed, betrayal?

This gripping psychological thriller will have you questioning, who - of Harry, Julie and JP - is really the guilty one? And is Carney's surrender driven by a guilty conscience or is his confession a calculated move in a deadly game?

Intoxicating。 The plot? Brilliant。 The prose? Snappy and evocative。What a book。 。。。more

This was an okay book about a man who is brutally attacked in front of his wife and the man who walks into the police station to confess to his murder。

Nice read。 Good book although not exceptional。 A young man kills a banker in the beginning of the book and the rest of the book your basically guessing why he did it。 Enjoyable and good character development。

This book was pretty okay, I liked the short chapters from the different characters POV- it helped to slow the story down and see it in all perspectives。 However, I feel like it was quite predictable for the most part。

Gripping and twisty with slow reveals as the characters narrate their part in the journey。 Never much doubt about whodunnit but the discovery of why makes for a power page turner。

Rating from Overdrive。 I have no memory of this at all, but apparently, I pretty much hated it。 😂

I love Jo Spain books and The Confession does not disappoint! It's a gripping thriller that had me hooked from the start。 No surprise then that I finished it in 2 days as I couldn't stop reading。 Spain's writing is excellent, she really sucks you into the story and the heads of the main characters Julie and JP。 You really see how people's thoughts and actions can really differ when one wants to hide something from the world! Another absolutely brilliant read from Jo Spain。 Her books have simple and uncomplicated plots but so well written with engaging characters that pull at your heart strings。 She really does draw you in wanting you to read just another chapter til you realise you are already half way through the book。 This has been my favourite one of hers so far。 A very talented abs clever writer of original suspense。 Highly recommend this author。

A compelling story about some truly awful people; I wanted to go and wash my hands when I finished the book。 This book has been hanging out in my TBR stack for years and I finally got to it。 I almost wish I hadn't -- I won't be able to get these nasty characters out of my mind for a bit。 A compelling story about some truly awful people; I wanted to go and wash my hands when I finished the book。 This book has been hanging out in my TBR stack for years and I finally got to it。 I almost wish I hadn't -- I won't be able to get these nasty characters out of my mind for a bit。 。。。more

Really liked this book, took me a while to finish it; but didn’t love as well。 So I enjoyed the synopsis of the book, but felt the story was quite anticlimactic at the end, and thought something more would occur, like a bigger event for example。 But I would still recommend for sure!

This is a good mystery novel。I didn't know that Jo Spain is a woman。 She is a new author for me。 The story and the writing style reminded me a lot of a Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben's novels。 Besides I don't remember reading another book which took place in modern Ireland。 There was a lot of information about the economy system in Ireland (which made this book more realistic) and it was a slow-burner but despite of that this turned out to be an addictive and surprising read。 ''The Confession' This is a good mystery novel。I didn't know that Jo Spain is a woman。 She is a new author for me。 The story and the writing style reminded me a lot of a Linwood Barclay and Harlan Coben's novels。 Besides I don't remember reading another book which took place in modern Ireland。 There was a lot of information about the economy system in Ireland (which made this book more realistic) and it was a slow-burner but despite of that this turned out to be an addictive and surprising read。 ''The Confession'' grabbed my attention from the very first page。 The characters were crafted brilliantly and I had discovered every dirty little secret hidden within。 Go for this if you are a Linwood Barclay or Harlan Coben fan。 。。。more

This was a good mystery for half to two thirds of the book。 I will continue to read this author。 However the last third was over the top melodrama for me。 I realize mysteries may inherently have melodrama, but this was more than I cared for and did not enhance the story。

I really liked this book。 Although I didn’t feel grabbed immediately but by a third of the way in, I was utterly captivated。 I couldn’t wait to get through it all to find out what was going on。 The idea of the book was different to most others of the same genre。 Instead of trying to work out ‘who dunnit’, we were told the who and the how very early on and it just left us trying to guess the why。 Loved it!
