Summary

For readers of Modern Lovers and Conversations with Friends, an addictive, humorous, and poignant debut novel about the shock waves caused by one couple's impulsive marriage。
‘A tender, devastating and funny exploration of love and friendship and the yearning for self-evisceration。 Coco Mellors is an elegant and exciting new voice’ PANDORA SYKES, author of How Do We Know We’re Doing It Right

New York is slipping from Cleo’s grasp。 Sure, she’s at a different party every other night, but she barely knows anyone。 Her student visa is running out, and she doesn’t even have money for cigarettes。 But then she meets Frank。 Twenty years older, Frank's life is full of all the success and excess that Cleo's lacks。 He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a green card。 She offers him a life imbued with beauty and art—and, hopefully, a reason to cut back on his drinking。 He is everything she needs right now。

Cleo and Frank run head-first into a romance that neither of them can quite keep up with。 It reshapes their lives and the lives of those around them, whether that’s Cleo's best friend struggling to embrace his gender identity in the wake of her marriage, or Frank's financially dependent sister arranging sugar daddy dates after being cut off。 Ultimately, this chance meeting between two strangers outside of a New Year’s Eve party changes everything, for better or worse。

Cleopatra and Frankenstein is an astounding and painfully relatable debut novel about the spontaneous decisions that shape our entire lives and those imperfect relationships born of unexpectedly perfect evenings。

I was simply just waiting for something to happen。。。。anything。。。。but it didn't。 I ended up skim reading the last fifty or so pages as I had completely lost interest。 I disliked all the characters - they came across as arrogant, pretentious and totally narcissistic。 The writing just felt, for want of a better phrase, a little bit up itself and totally self absorbed。 This book held all the promise of being a quite spectacular debut - I did enjoy a few parts but the rest just did not do it for me at all but I am strangely glad that I read it, if that makes any sense。 A disappointing two stars from me。。 ⭐️⭐️ 。。。more

4。1/5 the first half was lovely but sometimes some scene or person would tick me off。 Cleo was objectively the worst character and she was hardly put her place which made me mad。 Bonus 。1 for Eleanor

This book gave me goosebumps at the end。 Absolute five-star read, perfection on every level。 Perfect pacing, interesting three-dimensional characters that I came to know and care about deeply, beautiful, eloquent writing style, a story that kept me gripped and enthralled in a way that usually only thrillers do。 A moving, raw and real exploration of flawed relationships between flawed people。 One of my new favourite books。

2。5 stars rounded up。 It’s about a lot of privileged people who have zero accountability。 I sped through the last chapters because I just wanted it to end。

Terrible and shallow story full of toxic charactersThis novel is a very good and absurd example of what happens when two people get married without knowing anything about each other which I found terrible and shallow。 I liked the beginning of it and hoped that the plot will take a much more serious way around Cleo and Frank's relationship, but none of that happens。 I started hating this because it's full of toxic and negative characters; like people in their mid-forties who are acting like teena Terrible and shallow story full of toxic charactersThis novel is a very good and absurd example of what happens when two people get married without knowing anything about each other which I found terrible and shallow。 I liked the beginning of it and hoped that the plot will take a much more serious way around Cleo and Frank's relationship, but none of that happens。 I started hating this because it's full of toxic and negative characters; like people in their mid-forties who are acting like teenagers, doing drugs and alcohol among other stupid things。 Even the lousy humor is so bad I couldn't stand it anymore! And the more the story goes, the more of those unnecessary characters are involved which makes this just terrible to read。I have no idea why some people are comparing this to Sally Rooney because actually, Sally Rooney has likable characters。 。。。more

I was first very intrigued with the title and always keen to read a book that delivers a modern portrait inspired by the mythology or historic characters。 I quite liked the story even if it doesn't feel like there is a story。 It's more a bunch of events happening and how it impacts the feeling of the characters。 I liked how the feelings were depicted, poetic and melancholic。 However, I didn't feel any authenticity coming from the characters。 They all seem to be very clichés。 Cleo, Frank, Cleo's I was first very intrigued with the title and always keen to read a book that delivers a modern portrait inspired by the mythology or historic characters。 I quite liked the story even if it doesn't feel like there is a story。 It's more a bunch of events happening and how it impacts the feeling of the characters。 I liked how the feelings were depicted, poetic and melancholic。 However, I didn't feel any authenticity coming from the characters。 They all seem to be very clichés。 Cleo, Frank, Cleo's friends, Anders。。。 And some scenes are just too stereotyped millennials - like the one where Cleo and her friend meet Zoe in a club。 I found the dialogues very poor or even the fight between Frank and Cleo, shouting at her that she shouldn't complain because he gave her everything。 The character that I thought was very interesting was probably Zoe。 A bit of a shame that it doesn't go further with her story。 Same feeling with all the other characters - apart from Frank and Cleo。 I can't really put a word on it but generally, it was missing something like true, honest emotions to make this book a very good one。 To me, it just feels like a trendy book post Normal People。 。。。more

Ooof this one was a challenge for me。 I don’t usually like books with unlikeable characters。 And boy howdy were these bitches unlikeable。 I’d read a couple chapters and need to take a break because i was depresso。 4 stars because I was happy to keep chipping away at this book。 The characters continued to exist vividly in my head after taking breaks from reading。 Amazing amazing character novel。 Lots of lines I reread twice because of the beautiful writing。 Eleanor forever。

3。75 ⭐️ all of these characters were unlikable and mostly not in an endearing way (with the very significant exception of santiago, who i would die for), but somehow i still largely enjoyed reading this。 eleanor's chapters being in first person/written in a completely different style was really jarring and didn't feel necessary imo, but in general i enjoyed the author's writing style 3。75 ⭐️ all of these characters were unlikable and mostly not in an endearing way (with the very significant exception of santiago, who i would die for), but somehow i still largely enjoyed reading this。 eleanor's chapters being in first person/written in a completely different style was really jarring and didn't feel necessary imo, but in general i enjoyed the author's writing style 。。。more

i found the time skips very confusing and felt this book had no real storyline, and jumped from character to character erratically and without reason。 the events themselves were a little interesting but i found myself looking forward to the end of the (very long) chapters and found it hard to pick it up。 i didn’t like eleanor’s introduction half way through i was very confused and i just feel the ending was a let down and the whole book was a little pointless。

I’m not entirely sure where all these comparisons to Sally Rooney have come from。 It’s nothing like her writing - it’s better。 I devoured this book in 5 days, compelled by the layers of perspectives and a plot that absolutely devastated me and had me howling with laughter on an undulating trajectory mimicking the complex relationships in the novel。 If, like me, you’re wondering if this book lives up to the hype and whether you should dive in, I implore you to do it。

What the fuck did I read?Who are all of these people most importantly who is Eleanor and why did the sugar glider have to die?

I tried hard to like it, and towards the end I kind of did。 I think Eleanor saved it for me。 I thought that Frank's description of Eleanor was especially profound。 She was loved fiercely as a child and so she doesn't feel the need to perform, to impress。 She can just stop, be who she is and rest in the certainty of that unconditional love。 That part made the book somewhat worth it for me。I couldn't really stand the rest of the characters。 They came across as entitled, spoiled, cliches。 I thought I tried hard to like it, and towards the end I kind of did。 I think Eleanor saved it for me。 I thought that Frank's description of Eleanor was especially profound。 She was loved fiercely as a child and so she doesn't feel the need to perform, to impress。 She can just stop, be who she is and rest in the certainty of that unconditional love。 That part made the book somewhat worth it for me。I couldn't really stand the rest of the characters。 They came across as entitled, spoiled, cliches。 I thought the book overall gave a glimpse into what a toxic relationship could look like, of all the unintentional harm that two people can inflict on each other。 And how easy it could be when they find the right person。 I don't regret reading it, but some parts could have been so much better。 。。。more

Okay。 Very conflicted about this one。 Most of it was bad though。 Let’s start with the positives: the writing was beautiful, so many lines that made me stop and want to reread them over and over again。 However, the biggest highlight for me was the same as for a lot of people, Eleanor。 I wish this entire book was just from her perspective。 She’s become one of my fav characters of any book ever, her observations were always clever and funny, and I truly am going to miss her。 There was something so Okay。 Very conflicted about this one。 Most of it was bad though。 Let’s start with the positives: the writing was beautiful, so many lines that made me stop and want to reread them over and over again。 However, the biggest highlight for me was the same as for a lot of people, Eleanor。 I wish this entire book was just from her perspective。 She’s become one of my fav characters of any book ever, her observations were always clever and funny, and I truly am going to miss her。 There was something so familiar about her that I had trouble putting my finger on until it struck me halfway through the book: she’s a classic Phoebe Waller-Bridge character。 Truly。 I can easily see Eleanor being the lead for a show written by Phoebe。 She has that same British sense of humour (even though she’s American), is kind of a loser, and is in love with someone she shouldn’t be。 As for the things I didn’t like…。。where do I start😭。 While the narration sections and inner monologues were written quite well, the second any line of dialogue appeared I knew I was about to get whacked with some cringe, stereotypical tone depending on the character。 I read a review for this that said that the book reeks of whiteness, and I couldn’t agree more。 Mellors tries delving into issues of race, gender-identity and class without truly saying anything substantial other than cliché, shallow observations a million people have made before。 I rlly don’t get how cleo (our insufferable manic pixie dream girl) and frank (our older, more successful alcoholic) getting married prompts Quentin to question his sexuality/gender-expression。 Like WHAT? My guy went from being gay to maybe trans in the span of two pages, and it’s never well addressed or fleshed out。 Has this woman ever researched or even spoken to queer people? What about someone’s best friend getting married should have that kind of consequence? I understand that the intent of this entire book is to study the ripple effect of a spontaneous marriage on an entire diverse (emphasis on the diverse) cast of characters。 It sounds like a cool premise, until you realize that all the characters are cliché tokens for the sake of diversity, as if Mellors had a list she needed to tick off to cover every human struggle/ difference that exists in the world。 Here’s the gay best friend, our young black queen, our fat friend who’s arc is literally about losing weight, our alcoholic old guy who ruins his marriage, our quirky protagonist who attempts suicide and magically turns it to art。 WHATTT。 And they’re all covered in the most shallow way。 The multiple POVs didn’t work at all。 What was the point of having a whole chapter from Quentin’s perspective at the start of the book only to never go through with his plot line and (spoiler) find out in the very last chapter that he became an addict (not to mention that I feel like this is also a massive cliché for gay best friends)??? What about Zoe’s discovery of sugar baby/daddy relations was insightful? What did it add to the story???? And frank and cleo man。 Especially cleo。 I hated them with a burning passion。 I honestly feel like I could talk forever about things and moments I didn’t like in this book, but don’t have the energy to。 I can’t believe people recommend this。 That being said, I think Mellors is a promising writer。 Maybe all these cringe, clichés were the product of the novel being conceived when she was pretty young (she spent seven years working on it)。 I would check out her new releases out of curiosity, and I hope they’re not as bad as this。 This would be a one star if it weren’t for Eleanor。 I love u babe😍😍😍 。。。more

Thoughtful study of marriage。 Cleo needs a visa to stay in the US (New York actually)。 Frank is 20 years older and a successful advertising man with his own agency。 When they get hitched the need for a visa is just an excuse。 They fall fabulously, romantically in love。Then chapter by chapter, month by month, the love affair unwinds。 He drinks too much。 She is not a little depressed。 Then Frank takes on a new copywriter, an older woman, Eleanor。 And a different kind of love settles in。New York it Thoughtful study of marriage。 Cleo needs a visa to stay in the US (New York actually)。 Frank is 20 years older and a successful advertising man with his own agency。 When they get hitched the need for a visa is just an excuse。 They fall fabulously, romantically in love。Then chapter by chapter, month by month, the love affair unwinds。 He drinks too much。 She is not a little depressed。 Then Frank takes on a new copywriter, an older woman, Eleanor。 And a different kind of love settles in。New York itself features as a character with its frenetic way of life, almost amounting to desperation。I adored the romance of the earlier chapters but I also loved the humour, the wise cracking that particularly signifies Eleanor。 There is a matter of factness about relationships that's truly refreshing。 Yes it's true they often don't work out。 Nothing corny or predictable here。 One of those books you don't really want to end。 。。。more

Seems this book was polarizing but I loved it! I loved the input of different characters perspectives, the way the stories all tied together, and the overall focus on relationships with different people and the ones to hold on to and the ones to let go。

As an AI language model, I do not have personal preferences on books。 However, I can provide some information on the book "Cleopatra and Frankenstein。" I am not aware of any book with the exact title "Cleopatra and Frankenstein。" It is possible that it may be a work of fiction or a creative blend of historical and fictional characters。 It could also be a variation or edition of a pre-existing book。 Cleopatra, also known as Cleopatra VII Philopator, was a powerful queen of Egypt who lived during the Greek and Roman periods, while Frankenstein is a character from the novel "Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus" by Mary Shelley。 The novel tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a living creature, and his attempts to deal with the consequences of his actions。 If you could provide more information on the book, like the author, plot, or publisher, I would be happy to help you with relevant information。
