Summary

Can you stop a murder after it’s already happened?

Late October。 After midnight。 You’re waiting up for your seventeen-year-old son。 He’s late。 As you watch from the window, he emerges, and you realize he isn’t alone: he’s walking toward a man, and he’s armed。

You can’t believe it when you see him do it: your funny, happy teenage son, he kills a stranger, right there on the street outside your house。 You don’t know who。 You don’t know why。 You only know your son is now in custody。 His future shattered。

That night you fall asleep in despair。 All is lost。 Until you wake。。。 and it is yesterday。

And then you wake again。。。 and it is the day before yesterday。

Every morning you wake up a day earlier, another day before the murder。 With another chance to stop it。 Somewhere in the past lies an answer。 The trigger for this crime—and you don’t have a choice but to find it。。。

You watch in horror as your son commits a murder in front of your eyes。 How is this possible? Is there any way to undo it? This book is creative, suspenseful, surprising and a terrific read。

Wowzer! This book。 It’s perfect。 Best book I’ve read in years。 Thriller meets time travel meets true love story。 Stop reading reviews and get your hands (or ears, excellent audiobook as well) on this book asap。

Solid 4 starts。 Fast pace and unique crime solving mystery。

I hated this book so much。 As it dealt with organized crime I thought it had so much potential but I got so bored about 1/4 way through。 The authors writing was unbearable, especially with the constant repetition of the same word 3 times??? Don’t know why that was necessary。 Main character took forever to uncover and link pieces together, which surprised me cause she’s a lawyer。 I ended up skipping pages I’m honestly surprised this made Reese’s list, it was so boring and long for no reason。

I really like this book I would recommend!! :)

It’s hard for me to rate this one。 I started off loving it, but 40-50% through put it down for two weeks because it was losing my interest - the storyline jumps around quite a bit, I was losing track of how far back in time I was (I eventually stopped trying to keep track), and in some ways I just wanted to skim to see where things were heading。 When I finally came back, I did get to a point in the story where things picked up and by the end, I was hooked and the story had twisted in a way I had It’s hard for me to rate this one。 I started off loving it, but 40-50% through put it down for two weeks because it was losing my interest - the storyline jumps around quite a bit, I was losing track of how far back in time I was (I eventually stopped trying to keep track), and in some ways I just wanted to skim to see where things were heading。 When I finally came back, I did get to a point in the story where things picked up and by the end, I was hooked and the story had twisted in a way I hadn’t seen coming…but there was a lot of tough middle ground I had to force myself to read through to get there。 。。。more

I was hooked on this。 Great mystery。

Nice first half, good initial idea with the time traveling。 However, got more and more boring later on。

Michelle

Eh。 It was not worth my money。 Definitely not what I was expecting or what I hoped it would be。

Such a good ending! Some points were a little slow and listening to the audiobook sometimes had me confused with changing POVs but overall I thought it was great!

I literally knocked off a star for the very end, it was a lovely end but it was just a bit too neat for me。It was however a book that really grabbed me which based on the fact it is a book backwards in time was not I imagine an easy thing to do。 Jen keeps passing back in time trying to fix the murder she sees her son commit。

This book had such high reviews I was very excited to read it but had a hard time getting into it at first。 Half way through, it hooked me and I loved the second half。

# CharactersThe idea of a story being told backwards but still painting such a vivid picture of how a set of characters changed over time is honestly fascinating。 I was amazed by how Gillian McAllister used different POVs, confusing information and mini reveals to connect the dots between names that were dropped throughout the story, whilst also minimising confusion of how everyone linked up。 Whilst the story was predominantly told from Jen’s perspective, I got a really clear understanding of ch # CharactersThe idea of a story being told backwards but still painting such a vivid picture of how a set of characters changed over time is honestly fascinating。 I was amazed by how Gillian McAllister used different POVs, confusing information and mini reveals to connect the dots between names that were dropped throughout the story, whilst also minimising confusion of how everyone linked up。 Whilst the story was predominantly told from Jen’s perspective, I got a really clear understanding of characters like Todd and Ryan, and how their lives had led up to the events of the night Todd stabbed someone。 Every character had some internal conflict or darkness that was explored really well, whilst ensuring I still really liked the ones who had made bad decisions and lied。 Honestly a fascinating example of how an unconventional chronology of events in a story can successfully leave character growth uninterrupted, or even enhance it more than if the story was told in order。# AtmosphereThe atmosphere of this read was really intense as all the secrets and lies were slowly revealed throughout the story。 There was always this sense of confusion as well when Ryan would have POVs because I couldn’t place the timeline he was in or how he fit into the story。 It added this layer of unknowing that really enhanced the tension。 # WritingI have only amazing things to say about this author’s ability to tell this story out of order, include all sorts of aliases and hidden information, whilst also bringing everything together so clearly and not leaving me thoroughly confused。 I loved that the question mark was left at the end of the story, with all of this potentially happening to another mother, as well as the somewhat explanation for how it all happened。 I’m honestly amazed that the author was able to write characters that had some really negative traits and actions, but that I still rooted for in the end。 They just felt really real, with real issues of inadequacy and confusion mixing in with the more dramatic plot。 It was incredible。 I’m genuinely keen to see what else this author can do in these time-based storylines。 # PlotI think the reveals and the jumps back in time were paced amazingly well。 The reveals were scattered enough that there was always something to reel me back in, whilst also never giving me all the information so I’d be kept guessing。 The time jumps were great as well, in that they were bunched together at the beginning and then the time that passed would get larger and larger as she went further back。 The way each time jump taught Jen something new about the history of Kelly and the murder her son committed was really intelligently executed because they would be combined with this element of learning more about her family and how Jen was as a mother。 I liked the personal growth plotline that ran alongside the mystery, keeping it feeling real and relatable。 Every reveal was surprising and well worth the journey。 Whilst I initially thought the ending was a bit cliche, thinking on it, I think it makes sense for Jen to forget because it’s the only way she’s able to move on and find solace and not be burdened by these secrets anymore。 A core element of the plot was the burden of all these secrets, so it made sense to unburden her。 # IntrigueI was hooked on this book from start to finish, and those mini reveals had me constantly wanting to turn the page。 Intrigue was sky high。 # LogicI think the motives of the time jumping was laid out fairly clearly in the beginning, and evolved in a really natural way throughout the story as Jen jumped around and tried to understand why it was happening。 I think the logic of her trying to get others she trusted involved and learn more about the phenomenon she was experiencing was really sound, as well as the logic behind starting to stand up to people and ask questions once she figured her actions wouldn’t impact a larger timeline。 I liked that it was all linked back to solving this crime that seemed to change everyone’s lives over the next two decades, so it made sense (especially with her own personal growth and motherhood plotline) for the kidnapping of this child to be the major catalyst。 # EnjoymentHonestly a fascinating execution of an unconventional murder mystery, told in a really innovative way。 I’m amazed by how the author was able to keep everything straight in her head while she wrote this, and I’m so intrigued to see what else she has out there。 。。。more

Ooooh this was a good one。 Picked up on a lark when at the library the other day picking up another book I had on reserve。 it is a time travel type premise where the main character keeps going further and further back in time, trying to figure out how to stop her child from committing a murder。

3 stars because I liked the spoilers I read 😂This was a DNF for me。 I looked up the ending and spoilers。 I wish I would’ve had the drive to finish this book but it got boring about halfway through and felt really repetitive。 I understand that’s what it’s supposed to be but damn。 Maybe this book just wasn’t for me。 I did like the spoilers I read。 This would make a good movie or series!

This was a real mind-bender。 Genuinely kept me guessing and held my interest。 Loved it。

I had a lot of fun reading this。 The time-travel element was intriguing and I was pleased that (view spoiler)[ the husband ended up not being the "bad guy。" (hide spoiler)] This, at its heart, was a story about a family, and I really appreciated that。 I had a lot of fun reading this。 The time-travel element was intriguing and I was pleased that (view spoiler)[ the husband ended up not being the "bad guy。" (hide spoiler)] This, at its heart, was a story about a family, and I really appreciated that。 。。。more

This book blew my mind。 It was a tad slow here and there but I did not mind because I wanted to fully understand these characters。 This was my first book by this author and I am very impressed。 I can not wait to read another book。

Thought it seemed exciting and yes, it was an interesting and odd way to tell a story。 But thought it was a bit messy and had difficulty maintaining concentration at times。 The last third of the book was the best, I thought。

Clair Scarrott

Totally engrossed in this story from the beginning。 Characters were intriguing and a few audible gasps as the story unraveled! Brilliant writing。 Thoroughly enjoyed。 I shall be reading more from this author。

I was a bit hesitant about this book - I’d read the reviews and saw everyone going on about how good it is and honestly I can see why。 This book had me from the first page。 Jen is smart, strong and nosy - a combination I sorely admire。 Kelly (or Ryan) is stoic and guarded but loves Jen and Todd something fierce。 I really enjoyed the mystery and thrill from this book, I genuinely did not know what was going to happen。 I was shocked that Jen’s father was involved in the organised crime gang and th I was a bit hesitant about this book - I’d read the reviews and saw everyone going on about how good it is and honestly I can see why。 This book had me from the first page。 Jen is smart, strong and nosy - a combination I sorely admire。 Kelly (or Ryan) is stoic and guarded but loves Jen and Todd something fierce。 I really enjoyed the mystery and thrill from this book, I genuinely did not know what was going to happen。 I was shocked that Jen’s father was involved in the organised crime gang and that Kelly was also involved - although very differently。 I was suspicious that Clio was the stolen baby and was pleasantly “surprised” that my theory was correct!! This is definitely a must-read - do recommend, 10/10 book。 。。。more

What I loved about this book was the idea of reliving seemingly random days of your life with the perspective of hindsight, paying much closer attention to those you live with, and the various backdrops you invariably take for granted。 When our protagonist woke up in the nineties, just her observations of people's clothing and hairstyles, and the typical British high street (it's all set around Liverpool) with the now defunct Woolworth's with its 'pick and mix' - made me ache with nostalgia。 Wha What I loved about this book was the idea of reliving seemingly random days of your life with the perspective of hindsight, paying much closer attention to those you live with, and the various backdrops you invariably take for granted。 When our protagonist woke up in the nineties, just her observations of people's clothing and hairstyles, and the typical British high street (it's all set around Liverpool) with the now defunct Woolworth's with its 'pick and mix' - made me ache with nostalgia。 What I wouldn't give for a mini-excursion to just an ordinary day in the not so distant past! More than anything else, this book taught me to pay better attention, and value what we take for granted in all the days of our lives because it's changing constantly, imperceptibly, and you never know what you might lose。 Gillian McAllister writes really well and the plot is somewhat suspenseful。 There are some very persuasive scenes with convincing characters, especially the incredible poignance of visiting her father on the last day of his life。 However, I had two gripes: one, I got a bit tired of her overly sentimental preoccupation with her son, and two, I was not convinced that anyone tumbling backwards through time would be so nonchalant。 Jen, the protagonist, just plays along inhabiting her former self and trying to fulfil her role in that moment of her life while trying to solve the mystery that will avoid a future catastrophe。 If it were me, I'd be completely unhinged。 Still, if you suspend your disbelief and just go with the flow, it's a clever idea and well worth the read。 。。。more

Interesting book but not a great one IMO。 Definitely worth a read though。 I found the central premise interesting but also think it is much harder to write a novel without a gimmick that can hold the reader's interest and deliver a tightly plotted, plausible story。 Hence 3 stars。 Interesting book but not a great one IMO。 Definitely worth a read though。 I found the central premise interesting but also think it is much harder to write a novel without a gimmick that can hold the reader's interest and deliver a tightly plotted, plausible story。 Hence 3 stars。 。。。more
