Loved this book。 Pro-wrestling with fantasy magic elements? Count me in。 I was a huge fan of Johnson's "Wonder Woman: Dead Earth" (story and art style) and this won me over easily。 Yet it hits some niche topics I love but the story in this is what seals the deal。 Lona Steelrose is yearning to follow in her mother's footsteps in becoming a professional wrestler but her dad is trying to put obstacles in her way to keep her from that。 Then, due to reasons that would spoil a bit of the story, she is Loved this book。 Pro-wrestling with fantasy magic elements? dnf for nowI don't like wrestling, and the first two issues of this series presents everything I don't like about it with melodramatic stakes that don't feel like they matter alongside a twist that makes no sense。 I'll push myself to come back to this later because of DWJ's art but I really hope the rest of the story doesn't read as dumb as these two issues。 dnf for nowI don't like wrestling, and the first two issues of this series presents everything I don't like about it with melodramatic stakes that don't feel like they matter alongside a twist that makes no sense。 I'll push myself to come back to this later because of DWJ's art but I really hope the rest of the story doesn't read as dumb as these two issues。 。。。more

Been looking forward to this book since I heard about issue 1 and it did not disappoint。 Each issue/chapter leaves you off with another shocking revelation。 Each bit of the story is told so methodically。 While you may be able to predict where it is going, the second you think you figured it all out, it pulls the rug from underneath you。 The artwork as no surprise is absolutely gorgeous and never disappoints。

Note: I received access to read this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。This has some of the best lettering I've ever seen。 It has a much more handmade quality to it than other comics with its freeform over the top style。 I can't lay on enough praise about the artwork。 The story is straightforward, as are the characters, but it all serves the art。 Note: I received access to read this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review。This has some of the best lettering I've ever seen。 It has a much more handmade quality to it than other comics with its freeform over the top style。 I can't lay on enough praise about the artwork。 The story is straightforward, as are the characters, but it all serves the art。 。。。more

Nobody can draw action like DWJ

DWJ doing what he does best - delivers some gnarly action sequences formed around a story that'll pull at the heartstrings。 Perhaps he does fall on common tropes a little too often, but he really knows how to deliver a well-paced, well-drawn and memorable comic。 What I think is the true mastery behind Do A Powerbomb is that Johnson is able to distill his love of wrestling into something that is appealing for any comics reader。 The passion behind his fandom is baked into every single panel and th DWJ doing what he does best - delivers some gnarly action sequences formed around a story that'll pull at the heartstrings。 Perhaps he does fall on common tropes a little too often, but he really knows how to deliver a well-paced, well-drawn and memorable comic。 What I think is the true mastery behind Do A Powerbomb is that Johnson is able to distill his love of wrestling into something that is appealing for any comics reader。 The passion behind his fandom is baked into every single panel and that is truly what makes this an admirable comic。 I'm no more a wrestling fan than I was before reading this, but I will say I understand why people gravitate towards it more now。 。。。more

I think I just might not like pro wrestling。 Everything I didn't like about this comic seems to come from there。 The fake drama, the empty stakes, the constant underserved twists and turns。 I thought the story was incredibly weak。 It tries to inject some heart into the action but it just feels melodramatic, like reality tv。 And I guess that's the point。 I guess people like that。 I just thought it was bad writing。。The art is good though。 Very kinetic。 DWJ knows how to do action, and particularly I think I just might not like pro wrestling。 Everything I didn't like about this comic seems to come from there。 The fake drama, the empty stakes, the constant underserved twists and turns。 I thought the story was incredibly weak。 It tries to inject some heart into the action but it just feels melodramatic, like reality tv。 And I guess that's the point。 I guess people like that。 I just thought it was bad writing。。The art is good though。 Very kinetic。 DWJ knows how to do action, and particularly wrestling。I appreciate his point of trying to share his passions through his art。 He's clearly a fan of pro wrestling and it shows。 But it just didn't do it for me in the end 。。。more

4。5 stars。 This is really fun。 A quick read that focuses in a touching family story in the context of exciting wrestling matches, in a graphic style that suits it perfectly。 While reading it it had me really interested and in the middle of each wrestling match I kept making theories of what was going to happen and how the whole story was going to end, I didn´t hit on the end, and was happily surprised。 The illustrations may seem overloaded with their exagerated perspectives, splattered inks and 4。5 stars。 This is really fun。 A quick read that focuses in a touching family story in the context of exciting wrestling matches, in a graphic style that suits it perfectly。 While reading it it had me really interested and in the middle of each wrestling match I kept making theories of what was going to happen and how the whole story was going to end, I didn´t hit on the end, and was happily surprised。 The illustrations may seem overloaded with their exagerated perspectives, splattered inks and deformed anatomies, but it is precise for this story, it has the right details where they are needed, depicting impacts, speed and focus greatly。 The combination of narration and illustrations in the matches makes them flow swift。 The visual design of the wrestling teams is really good, the orangutans and our leads were my favorites, the FYSO team which could´ve had a better design compared with the other ones。 Loved the reveal of what FYSO means, and the other couple of reveals are also great。 This is ranked in several lists of the best comics of 2022, and it rightfully deserves it。 I understand that this uses different graphical resources that are common in manga, it has made me interested in reading some of it, any suggestions? 。。。more

DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON ADDS ANOTHER BANGER TO HIS CATALOG WITH THIS AWESOME LIMITED SERIES!What better way to start a new year off than reading some work from a creator who is possibly the most creative in the biz right now。 DWJ blesses us with another dynamic, balls to the wall story。 ‘Do a Powerbomb’ is a limited series centered around a character named Lona。 Lona is the daughter of a legendary pro-wrestler by the name of Yua Steelrose。 After a hyped up match between Yua and her biggest rival, DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON ADDS ANOTHER BANGER TO HIS CATALOG WITH THIS AWESOME LIMITED SERIES!What better way to start a new year off than reading some work from a creator who is possibly the most creative in the biz right now。 DWJ blesses us with another dynamic, balls to the wall story。 ‘Do a Powerbomb’ is a limited series centered around a character named Lona。 Lona is the daughter of a legendary pro-wrestler by the name of Yua Steelrose。 After a hyped up match between Yua and her biggest rival, Cobrasun, goes wrong, Yua is accidentally killed in the ring。 Lona sees her mothers unconscious body and is scared by her unmoving and cold appearance。 10 years go by and we see Lona trying to take up her mother’s legacy and try to become a pro-wrestler herself。 Her only problem is she can’t find a trainer that’ll actually take her under their wing。 Her father also doesn’t want her to follow in her mother’s footsteps as he’s afraid she’ll end up like her。 Lona refuses and continues on her own path。 After walking the streets during the night Lona is approached by a strange man who reveals to her that he is a Necromancer。 He’s a very powerful being who also happens to be obsessed with pro-wrestling。 He offers Lona to join his tag team Deathlyfe tournament, where the winner will get the opportunity to bring back someone near and dear to them from the dead。 Lona instantly agrees and now just needs to find a tag team partner。 She decides to find the man who accidentally killed her mother and was also her biggest match up, Cobrasun。 Cobrasun is still angry with himself for that night, and after a bit of convincing, agrees to join Lona in the tournament。 Together they become Sun and Steel and must go against other pro-wrestlers from other worlds across time and space。 Both with one goal in mind, to bring back Yua Steelrose。 Daniel Warren Johnson oh how I love thee! Once again DWJ is providing story, writing, and artwork in another phenomenal series of his。 Johnson said his inspiration for this story came to him a few years ago when his daughter was born。 He found himself watching pro-wrestling as he tried to put his kiddo to bed。 He fell in love with the sport and that’s how we got this。 You can tell Johnson is passionate about the topic due to the passion he leaves on page。 Both with the writing and artwork。 Sure the story is very *out* there, but the characters he writes are still very much grounded and show real emotion。 You feel the pain these people are going through and the lengths they’re willing to take to make that pain go away。 Leave it to DWJ to get me tearing up in the first couple pages but also getting hyped asf on the next issue! There’s crazy moments in this book that had me WTFing out loud all throughout reading it。 Moments that were epic and badass and moments that were pulling at my heartstrings。 Even characters that were more in the background got some small attention that made the overall read feel important and well thought out。 It’s great in action yes, but DWJ’s takes on grief and how one deals with it, was super beautiful and is shown really well with the ending of the series。 The read is a constant ‘I did not expect this’ kind of read and I think that just shines on how creative DWJ is。 Then you add his top notch, S-tier, GOAT LIKE, artwork and you got a series that should be admired by everyone! Once again I find myself using words like, dynamic, epic, badass, and enthralling。 Johnson’s ability to display the movement around the fights feels so kinetic。 As corny as it sounds, you almost find yourself there in the crowd cheering for Sun and Steel, witnessing some of the craziest displays of the sport that is pro-wrestling。 You can hear the unique and satisfying sound of the ring as the wrestlers move around and slam against it。 The lights look bright and are captured in amazing fashion when he show’s an epic angle of the wrestlers flying through the air。 The crowd is loud and your eyes can barely keep up as they go from rope to rope。 It’s all just WOW。 Add the captivating colors from long time collaborator Mike Spicer, and you have the cherry on top to Johnson’s work。 Overall; I love love love this read and it just continues to show me why Dainel Warren Johnson is the best in the game right now。 His creative stories only get better and his artwork is some of the best in technique and look alone! Even if you’re not a fan of pro-wrestling, give this a try。 It’s a fun thrill ride that shines as an example that not *everything* has been done, and we are witnessing one of the best to ever do it in the comic book industry。 。。。more

Easily the best comic I read this year。 DWJ is able to tell a story about pro wrestling that captures both the thrills of the matches but also the emotions of what the athletes go through。 As someone who lost his mom a few years back, this hit especially hard。 It’s a rare comic that can make me cry on one page and show me some sick action on the next。

Series written and drawn by DWJ are just flat out over the top fun to read。 And Do a Powerbomb is no different。 Come for the pro wrestling tournament hosted by a necromancer, but stay for the emotional character moments that will tug at your heartstrings。

Do yourself a favor, when the collected graphic novel comes out in a few months, treat yourself to what arguably is the best comic book of 2022。 I’ve always been a wrestling fan。 But I’m also a fan of commitment to family and tying in values that guide your life to passion on living your life with purpose and virtue。 How Daniel Warren Johnson ties that together through truly dynamic and beautifully angled perspectives in the ring is just straight out fun。

This is why pro wrestling rules, and it takes a fan and bonafide sure bet like Daniel Warren Johnson to put it into the world of comics。 Do a Powerbomb is my favorite indie book of the year, and it's just a perfect cocktail of things I love: pro wrestling, DWJ art, and well done fundamental storytelling。A girl must team with the man who killed her mom to compete in a real life interdimensional wrestling tournament, with the prize of potential revival as the prize, and man is it balls to wall act This is why pro wrestling rules, and it takes a fan and bonafide sure bet like Daniel Warren Johnson to put it into the world of comics。 Do a Powerbomb is my favorite indie book of the year, and it's just a perfect cocktail of things I love: pro wrestling, DWJ art, and well done fundamental storytelling。A girl must team with the man who killed her mom to compete in a real life interdimensional wrestling tournament, with the prize of potential revival as the prize, and man is it balls to wall action。 It has heart, it has stakes, it even has a battle with God, all wrapped in one bombastic 7 issue mini series。 I only wish there was more, Mr Johnson and Mr Spicer never disappoint 。。。more

This is it。 Wow。 DWJ is an absolute master storyteller and a brilliant artist。 I’m not a wrestling fan at all, but took a chance on this book because of DWJ and I’m so glad I did。 On the list of things I’ve enjoyed the most this year, this comic comes very close to the top of that list。 This story evoked probably every emotion that I’m capable of experiencing。 I couldn’t put this comic down when reading every issue and I couldn’t wait for the next month to continue on in this series。 This is one This is it。 Wow。 DWJ is an absolute master storyteller and a brilliant artist。 I’m not a wrestling fan at all, but took a chance on this book because of DWJ and I’m so glad I did。 On the list of things I’ve enjoyed the most this year, this comic comes very close to the top of that list。 This story evoked probably every emotion that I’m capable of experiencing。 I couldn’t put this comic down when reading every issue and I couldn’t wait for the next month to continue on in this series。 This is one I’ll buy for friends and have them read。 This is one I’ll enjoy talking with friends about。 This is one I’ll read again, for sure。 I loved this so much。 。。。more

I loved this! The story balanced the wild OOT nature of Pro Wrestling drama and Manga series like Dragon Ball Z while also having a very grounded human story about loss and grief and by the end even explores the nature of life itself。And the art, some of the panels in this are absolutely stunning, it really has a sense of action and genuinely feels like you are watching a wrestling match。Easily my favourite graphic novel of 2022

Daniel Warren Johnson is a gift to the industry。This book is wild from the start and only builds on itself from there, culminating in one of the most insane final boss battles I have ever seen。 What impressed me the most about this book is how grounded and personal this book feels despite being surrounded by chaos。 DWJ is the master of taking some of the most chaotic ideas and putting them to paper in a way that makes you care。
