Summary

From the physician behind the wildly popular website NutritionFacts。org, How Not to Die reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death。

The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle。 In How Not to Die, Dr。 Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts。org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America -- heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more -- and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives。

The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease。 The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1。6 million Americans annually。 This doesn't have to be the case。 By following Dr。 Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer。

History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can。 Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects。 Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation。 Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival。 Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks。

In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr。 Greger's Daily Dozen -- a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day。 Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor's orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives。

I’m not sure how to review this one without doing extensive nutritional research review myself。 He has a ton of applicable data, but I think a good deal of it was cherry picked for his causes。 I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing or not, ultimately his point is just to encourage us to eat more plants - and there is no doubt that would be a good thing。 He does manage to turn most of his points back to encouraging veganism again and again。 While it might be true that most folks would be healthier on I’m not sure how to review this one without doing extensive nutritional research review myself。 He has a ton of applicable data, but I think a good deal of it was cherry picked for his causes。 I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing or not, ultimately his point is just to encourage us to eat more plants - and there is no doubt that would be a good thing。 He does manage to turn most of his points back to encouraging veganism again and again。 While it might be true that most folks would be healthier on a vegan diet, it’s not realistic。 I fear that will simply turn readers off。 I was able to brush off the stuff I tired of hearing and cherry pick my own takeaways - adding flax, more oatmeal, even a daily Brazil nut etc - so it worked for me。 On 1。4 audio speed! 。。。more

A great synopsis of the research supporting a plant based diet。 I was close to giving it a 5 but it was so long, but I wouldn’t have cut anything either。 The book details research supporting reasons why your diet should include: beans, berries, other fruits, cruciferous vegetables, greens,!other vegetables, flaxseeds, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, while grains, water, and exercise。 I’ll add ground cloves to my morning oatmeal in addition to berries and cinnamon。 First half of book went into A great synopsis of the research supporting a plant based diet。 I was close to giving it a 5 but it was so long, but I wouldn’t have cut anything either。 The book details research supporting reasons why your diet should include: beans, berries, other fruits, cruciferous vegetables, greens,!other vegetables, flaxseeds, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, while grains, water, and exercise。 I’ll add ground cloves to my morning oatmeal in addition to berries and cinnamon。 First half of book went into specific detail how not to die from specific diseases。 I’ve also checked out the cookbook now too。 。。。more

I think this book, like any other about self development, should be read with a drop of critical thinking here and there。Vegan diet is probably not for everyone。 The vast information about food, drinks, spices is very useful for me。 I even made notes。 But always if you’re unsure, seek a medical advise and do your own research。

This book was so dense with information but I thought totally worth the read。 It highlights how a healthy diet of mostly fresh, non-processed foods can save your life from a premature death。 I found some articles saying that not all the information in this book is portrayed 100% accurately, but even if half of the information is true I think it’s worth listening to and changing what you do and don’t put in your body。 A lot of the information covered in this book can be found on nutritionfacts。or This book was so dense with information but I thought totally worth the read。 It highlights how a healthy diet of mostly fresh, non-processed foods can save your life from a premature death。 I found some articles saying that not all the information in this book is portrayed 100% accurately, but even if half of the information is true I think it’s worth listening to and changing what you do and don’t put in your body。 A lot of the information covered in this book can be found on nutritionfacts。org and there’s a free app called the daily dozen to help you keep track of what you should be eating each day。 The fact that the author provides all this information for free, on the app and on his website, is really cool。 I read this book for free on Amazon prime reading。 I also bought the How Not to Die Cookbook and I’m really excited to use it。 。。。more

It's a bit repetitive。 And as a vegetarian already transitioning to vegan。 I just say well yeah of course what you eat affects your health。 So I didn't read all 400 pages。 Also people who eat healthy and exercise still get diseases。 Reduced likelihood, sure, elimination unfortunately not。 But if the book helps someone be healthier it's a service。 It's a bit repetitive。 And as a vegetarian already transitioning to vegan。 I just say well yeah of course what you eat affects your health。 So I didn't read all 400 pages。 Also people who eat healthy and exercise still get diseases。 Reduced likelihood, sure, elimination unfortunately not。 But if the book helps someone be healthier it's a service。 。。。more

I stopped reading when the book recommended not eating eggs because of the cholesterol。 It has been shown that the cholesterol in eggs does not increase the cholesterol in our bodies。 Maybe this book was written before those studies were made public, but regardless, it's hard to trust anything else in the book now。 It does feel like the book is pushing us towards veganism by saying that all animal products are bad for us。 I stopped reading when the book recommended not eating eggs because of the cholesterol。 It has been shown that the cholesterol in eggs does not increase the cholesterol in our bodies。 Maybe this book was written before those studies were made public, but regardless, it's hard to trust anything else in the book now。 It does feel like the book is pushing us towards veganism by saying that all animal products are bad for us。 。。。more

As with any health/nutrition related book everything must be taken with a grain of salt due to personal opinions/bias however the author did a great job of providing research studies and sources to back up his claims。 I loved the organization of the book and found so many interesting things I hadn’t learned before。 The organization makes it easy to go back to a section/specific disease if I am curious in the future。 I learned about so many ways that food can be medicine and impact your health in As with any health/nutrition related book everything must be taken with a grain of salt due to personal opinions/bias however the author did a great job of providing research studies and sources to back up his claims。 I loved the organization of the book and found so many interesting things I hadn’t learned before。 The organization makes it easy to go back to a section/specific disease if I am curious in the future。 I learned about so many ways that food can be medicine and impact your health in the long run and I think that’s something everyone should learn。 As someone who hopes to practice medicine in the future I want to keep his recommendations in mind and always think of food prescriptions alongside medications。 Definitely will keep a copy with me in my future practice to reference。 。。。more

Brb off to buy some flaxseed and broccoli 🥦

3。5/5I really think the title is misleading。 This one should be called “The vegan manifesto” instead。 Inside the book, you will find again and again statements like:"Meat consumption was associated with increased risk of dying from cancer, dying from heart disease, and dying prematurely in general"and"People who once ate vegetarian diets but then started to eat meat at least once a week experienced a 146 percent increase in odds of heart disease, a 152 percent increase in stroke, a 166 percent i 3。5/5I really think the title is misleading。 This one should be called “The vegan manifesto” instead。 Inside the book, you will find again and again statements like:"Meat consumption was associated with increased risk of dying from cancer, dying from heart disease, and dying prematurely in general"and"People who once ate vegetarian diets but then started to eat meat at least once a week experienced a 146 percent increase in odds of heart disease, a 152 percent increase in stroke, a 166 percent increase in diabetes, and a 231 percent increase in odds for weight gain。 During the twelve years after the transition from vegetarian to omnivore, meat-eating was associated with a 3。6 year decrease in life expectancy"。。。Overall, even though I find his argument not 100% convincing, I must say that I really appreciate all the scientific and medical information Dr Greger has combined in the book。 I guess that’s why I think everyone should read it, or at least if you think the whole book is too long, maybe read some of the chapters with issues you have to face with or you think is relevant to your own health。***Full review here: https://medium。com/@andyluong。vn/how-。。。 。。。more

So much nutritional and health information given, and without judgement。 If you’re looking for ways to help your body function better using food - this is a fantastic place to start。 Definitively a lot to consume so I appreciate the amount of information on the website the author provides so you can look more into species that interest you。

Very comprehensive and no-BS explanation of all the types of food that are most nutritious and beneficial for you! Information is well-organized by chapter, and claims are extensively backed by many, many research studies。 I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to understand what constitutes a nutritious (sometimes cancer-fighting) diet and the numerous benefits of a plant-based, whole food diet。

This was very long, but excellent information。

Thanks to this book , i am vegan now。 I am fermenting my veggies and growing microgreens on my kitchen shelf。

This will definitely be one I re-read over the years。 SO much good information, really interesting research and case studies broken down in a very digestible and understandable way。 10/10

Found this book when I searched for the possibility of adding eggs back to my diet。 Now I know better。 Watched one of his videos on eggs and got hooked。 Healthy eating is not luxury but a necessity。 He backs all his claims with information done by qualified scientists。
