Summary

Glamorous, beautiful Mummy has everything a woman could want。。。 except for a daughter of her very own。 So when she sees Kim—heavily pregnant, glued to her phone and ignoring her eldest child in a busy shop—she does what anyone would do。 She takes her。 But little foul-mouthed Tonya is not the daughter that Mummy was hoping for。

Meanwhile Kim is demonised by the media as a 'scummy mummy', who deserved to lose Tonya and ought to have her other children taken too。 Haunted by memories of her own childhood and refusing to play by the media's rules, she begins to spiral, turning on those who love her。

Though they are worlds apart, Mummy and Kim have more in common than they could possibly imagine。 But it is five-year-old Tonya who is caught in the middle。。。

I don't read a lot of thrillers or crime novels, because I'm worried they can be formulaic and unoriginal, but this was anything but - a fast paced, nerve-shredding descent into the minds of two characters that, while often unattractive, become over the course of the novel fully-rounded and three dimensional。 From the very first page you are thrust headlong into the story, and I can honestly say I wasn't sure what was going to happen in the end, which is high praise for any book。 In turn bitingl I don't read a lot of thrillers or crime novels, because I'm worried they can be formulaic and unoriginal, but this was anything but - a fast paced, nerve-shredding descent into the minds of two characters that, while often unattractive, become over the course of the novel fully-rounded and three dimensional。 From the very first page you are thrust headlong into the story, and I can honestly say I wasn't sure what was going to happen in the end, which is high praise for any book。 In turn bitingly funny, heartbreaking and eerily dark, Call Me Mummy is a wonderful debut from Tina Baker, and I can't wait to read what she writes next。 。。。more

This is a great debut novel for Tina Baker。 It is a dark and disturbing read that grabbed me from the very first page and didn't let go until the very last page。 In fact I was so engrossed in it I read late into the night because I just had to finish it。 It is a very well written and compelling read, with disturbingly flawed characters, and a disturbing plot。 If child abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, anorexia etc are your triggers then this book is not for you but I will definitely be reading more This is a great debut novel for Tina Baker。 It is a dark and disturbing read that grabbed me from the very first page and didn't let go until the very last page。 In fact I was so engrossed in it I read late into the night because I just had to finish it。 It is a very well written and compelling read, with disturbingly flawed characters, and a disturbing plot。 If child abuse, alcoholism, drug abuse, anorexia etc are your triggers then this book is not for you but I will definitely be reading more from this author。5 Stars***** 。。。more

I enjoyed this book, the chapters are short and snappy, just how I like them 🙂 told in the perspectives of Kim, Mummy and Tonya。 Kim is portrayed as a 'scummy mummy' but I felt for her, people judge books by the covers far too readily 🤬 whereas 'Mummy' is well to do and wealthy but a horrible person。 The story overall was good, if slightly repetitive and it lost a star for its ending which I didn't like。 I'd recommend it regardless of the ending, it's a good character driven tale I enjoyed this book, the chapters are short and snappy, just how I like them 🙂 told in the perspectives of Kim, Mummy and Tonya。 Kim is portrayed as a 'scummy mummy' but I felt for her, people judge books by the covers far too readily 🤬 whereas 'Mummy' is well to do and wealthy but a horrible person。 The story overall was good, if slightly repetitive and it lost a star for its ending which I didn't like。 I'd recommend it regardless of the ending, it's a good character driven tale 。。。more

Hooking! Really enjoyed this read, I was hooked from the beginning all the way through to the end! It was so unpredictable too, which I love!! I usually don’t like books that switch between different character perspectives but it worked SO well with each chapter being short, so the story kept moving! Just wish there were chapter numbers!

Call Me Mummy had me gripped from page 1。 It's one of those books that I could have easily binged in one sitting if life didn't get in the way。 Tonya is 5 years old, she gets abducted whilst out Christmas shopping with her Mum Kim and her little brother。 'Mummy' is desperate to have a child of her own and becomes the unlikely kidnapper who quickly realises that she hasn't quite got what she had hoped for! I loved the alternating perspectives of Kim, Mummy, and Tonya。 It was really interesting to be able to get inside both women's heads, learn about their pasts, and see how that influences the decisions they make during Tonya's abduction。 Readers aren't meant to like Kim or Mummy but as the book goes on we are gradually shown how the women became who they are and reasons to excuse some of their behaviours。 This along with the fast pace kept me turning the pages。 It was horrific yet enthralling seeing the two women gradually spiral out of control and their mental states deteriorate。 The insertion of 'social media' posts about the kidnapping added more unique and interesting perspectives as the public brand Kim as a 'scummy mummy'。This was such a twisted, dark thriller and I absolutely loved it。 The writing is real and harsh, and the story is so wonderfully messed up that my inner psycho was delighted! Call Me Mummy is superbly written。 It is about the abduction of a little girl but the novel covers social media, historic abuse, religion and mental illness。 These themes may make it sound as if it's a heavy going read。 However, the abducted girl is feisty and refuses to be down trodden。 The book is a thriller, but it maintains a sense of reality in its time frames and action is never at the expense of human emotions or reactions。 Call Me Mummy is superbly written。 It is about the abduction of a little girl but the novel covers social media, historic abuse, religion and mental illness。 These themes may make it sound as if it's a heavy going read。 However, the abducted girl is feisty and refuses to be down trodden。 The book is a thriller, but it maintains a sense of reality in its time frames and action is never at the expense of human emotions or reactions。 。。。more

I loved this character driven story with extremely flawed characters, some I liked and others I did not。 It’s also not a typical child kidnapping story which added to my enjoyment of the book。 Kim is in a store shopping with her children。 Tonya is five and her young son is in a stroller and she’s very pregnant with a third。 She’s hyper-focused about what she needs to purchase, resulting in her waning attention span and ignoring her daughter, Tonya, who is a high-energy child simply wanting to lo I loved this character driven story with extremely flawed characters, some I liked and others I did not。 It’s also not a typical child kidnapping story which added to my enjoyment of the book。 Kim is in a store shopping with her children。 Tonya is five and her young son is in a stroller and she’s very pregnant with a third。 She’s hyper-focused about what she needs to purchase, resulting in her waning attention span and ignoring her daughter, Tonya, who is a high-energy child simply wanting to look at all the toys。 A stranger witnessing the event becomes enraged that a mother could be so irresponsible with her child and quickly deems the mother unworthy of having children, rectifying the situation by kidnapping Tonya to raise as her own。The chapters alternate between Kim, the mother, and the kidnapper, referred to as “Mummy”。 Later in the book Tonya’s perspective is added。Mummy has a beautiful life and home and seems perfectly capable of doting on a child, giving the child the world。 However, she is overly prim, proper and a perfectionist with deeply-rooted religious values。 Her upbringing was horrendous, full of violence and abuse。 She is unable to have children and desperately wants to love a child in exchange for the child’s affection and adoration。Kim, Tanya’s mother, has also had a rough life and a horrible history involving drugs and alcohol。 She has cleaned up her life and is now married and loves her children。 Due to such a street-hard life, Kim is a hardened, foul-mouthed force to be reckoned, which is why she has only 1 friend。 She and her husband struggle financially and often things have to wait until their hand-to-mouth payday, not to mention Kim is struggling with the kids on her own, because her husband needs to work extra hours。 Aside from this, her love for her child and missing her child is palpable。 Reactions to their agony left me speechless and in a state of disbelief, multiple times, and I wondered how far they would sink into the murky waters of pain before they would see there is a bottom and slowly push to rise to the surface。 One thing that really struck me is how angry and inflamed people became once the news of the kidnapping broke。 Instead of wanting to destroy a malicious kidnapper, they instead misfired their hate and spite for a mother, another victim, who made a tragic mistake。 Isn’t her palpable grief and remorse enough pain for one lifetime? All in all, I can’t say that I particularly liked any of the main characters, including the child, but together I loved their story。The book gave me much to think about and analyze。 I savored this book because of the dynamics and dichotomy, having to put aside my own judgements and instead focus on the impact and ripple effects for each character。 I definitely recommend this book。 。。。more

This story shows how easy it is to judge and write something awful without giving any thought to the fact that this is a real person with feelings, something which is all too prevalent these days。 This is a brilliant read - evil, twisted, suspenseful and shocking。 It terrified me yet I couldn’t take my eyes away from the page, and I have to mention the writing itself which was just beautiful。 。。。more
