Summary

It's the party to end all parties。。。。but not everyone is here to celebrate。

On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests。 His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors。

But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake。

On New Year's Day, Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects。 The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors, friends and family—and Ffion has her own secrets to protect。

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn't who wanted Rhys dead。。。but who finally killed him。

In a village with this many secrets, murder is just the beginning。

Not my favorite! Lots of characters, anyone could be the murderer! You finally get to know who。

Barely a 3? The pacing of this book felt really off, it took too long to get into anything substantial and the flashbacks were confusing。 None of the characters were particularly interesting so I didn’t find myself caring “whodunnit。” Just ok。

I love a good who done it book。 The Last Party did not disappoint。 There was so many twists and turns, I was entertained the whole time。

This book was AMAZING! The best book I’ve read in 2023 so far。 So many twists that I didn’t see coming。 Loved how it is told from different character’s points of view and the shift in timeline to tell the story。 I will probably read another by Clare Mackintosh!

Good enjoyable thriller。 Full marks。

2。5 too many characters/suspects for my audio ears

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It took me a second try to get into it and I’m so glad I did。 I loved that I figured out who the killer was with 60 odd pages to go, but Mackintosh still managed to surprise me。 Looking forward to DC Ffion Morgan #2

Enjoyable story with lots of twists and turns。 I kept wishing there were photos for the locations。 I hope this is a movie soon!

I'm a fan of this author's work but have to admit I had a hard time getting into this one。 The Welsh names threw me a bit and the changing timelines。 The story is worth the effort of sticking with it - lots of twists and turns。 I'm a fan of this author's work but have to admit I had a hard time getting into this one。 The Welsh names threw me a bit and the changing timelines。 The story is worth the effort of sticking with it - lots of twists and turns。 。。。more

This gave me major Broadchurch vibes。 A very classic British procedural who-done-it。 There are a LOT of characters and most have been connected 30+ years so there's a lot of cross over back and forth through the timelines。 I really wanted to like this more because I LOVE Broadchurch, but I was struggling to stay connected through so much of the story。 It wasn't until the last 25% that I felt like I was invested。 Maybe if the chapters were shorter or the cast of characters were shorter if would h This gave me major Broadchurch vibes。 A very classic British procedural who-done-it。 There are a LOT of characters and most have been connected 30+ years so there's a lot of cross over back and forth through the timelines。 I really wanted to like this more because I LOVE Broadchurch, but I was struggling to stay connected through so much of the story。 It wasn't until the last 25% that I felt like I was invested。 Maybe if the chapters were shorter or the cast of characters were shorter if would have been more engaging。 Either way I'm glad I saw it through, but it would have made a better show。 。。。more

2。5⭐️I found this book to be too long。 Part 1 wasn't quite keeping me on the edge of my seat or anything until the twist。 I had higher hopes for part 2 but nothing was doing it。 I didn't enjoy how this played out and I didn't see it as anything that the reader could guess until right before you were reading what was going down。 The (view spoiler)[ real reveal (hide spoiler)] could've been interesting but at that point I was so disappointed that I couldn't really care but I did give the book a h 2。5⭐️I found this book to be too long。 Part 1 wasn't quite keeping me on the edge of my seat or anything until the twist。 I had higher hopes for part 2 but nothing was doing it。 I didn't enjoy how this played out and I didn't see it as anything that the reader could guess until right before you were reading what was going down。 The (view spoiler)[ real reveal (hide spoiler)] could've been interesting but at that point I was so disappointed that I couldn't really care but I did give the book a half point boost as a result。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 Lots of secrets - LOTS of characters - flipping timeline - a terrific narrator。 I had some difficulty keeping track of all of the characters and the timeline because I couldn’t take notes while painting a bedroom。 🤷🏼‍♀️ Sometimes the characters were referred to by last name, sometimes by their first so that also took a bit to sort out。 I still really enjoyed the story and look forward to more of DC Morgan。

Cierra Galavan

I had the hardest time getting into this one。 I loved everyone’s secrets though。

Agatha Christie-tyyliin。 Yksi kuollut ja epäiltyjä on vino pino。 Erittäin hyvä。 Erilainen mitä kirjailijan aiemmat kirjat jotka nekin hyviä。

Beautifully scripted twists and turns, right up to the very end。 An excellent thriller for avid Clare Mackintosh readers or for those looking to discover her work。

I wanted to read this book as I had read I Let You Go by this author before booksta, and loved it, and had wanted to read something else by her for a while。 I didn’t have the same experience with this one unfortunately。 Although I didn’t hate it, it definitely was not a favourite。 The Last Party is about the murder of musician Rhys in a luxury area of a small Wales town。 Everyone immediately becomes a suspect and the investigation into the murder begins。 The book is told in many, many different I wanted to read this book as I had read I Let You Go by this author before booksta, and loved it, and had wanted to read something else by her for a while。 I didn’t have the same experience with this one unfortunately。 Although I didn’t hate it, it definitely was not a favourite。 The Last Party is about the murder of musician Rhys in a luxury area of a small Wales town。 Everyone immediately becomes a suspect and the investigation into the murder begins。 The book is told in many, many different POVs, but the two main characters or Ffion and Leo who are the two police officers investigating the crime。 This book had potential, but it was WAY too long。 Way, way too long。 It was over 400 pages and there was a major storyline that was honestly pointless and just wasted time。 I don’t mind a slow burn at all, but this one was rough。 There was so much going on and was very icky at times with an almost accidental incest story line (never thought I’d write that sentence) and lots of references to statutory rape。 The premise of the book was good, but the length was just too long and made the story drawn out。 Because of this I felt like the twists also didn’t hold much of a punch。 This is not one I would recommend rushing out to read。 。。。more

A twisty who-done-it。 I think anyone who loves a good mystery would like this book。

I didn’t hate it。 But I felt like there weren’t any characters who didn’t have ugly secrets to hide and that felt too far-fetched。 The writing was good enough that I wouldn’t mind trying another book by this author but this one just didn’t work for me。

Along with the unreliable narrator, the parallel telling of a story from multiple viewpoints and time frames seems to be the successor to the locked room as the paradigm of the day。 The Last Party is an excellent example of the multiple-style mystery。 Good mystery, good characters, well-paced - a most intriguing book。 I can't wait for the next DC Morgan tale。 Along with the unreliable narrator, the parallel telling of a story from multiple viewpoints and time frames seems to be the successor to the locked room as the paradigm of the day。 The Last Party is an excellent example of the multiple-style mystery。 Good mystery, good characters, well-paced - a most intriguing book。 I can't wait for the next DC Morgan tale。 。。。more

I don’t like to DNF a book so I pushed thru it。 At the 75% mark I finally was into it。 Too many characters。 I had to stop reading and think who is this person again。 I would have rated a 2 star because of the time it took me to get into it and it taking a week for me to read it。 I gave it 3 stars because the last third of the book was actually good

Abby Wahlgren

Wasn’t really my cup of tea。 I had a very hard time getting into it。

Clare does it again, although I have a feeling we haven't seen the last of Ffion。 What a great heroine! I can honestly say I always think I know, but I never do, and that is why I love her books。 As a hardened reader of this genre, very few writers can pull the wool over my eyes but Ms Mackintosh always does。 Just brilliant!
