Summary

At a busy festival site on a warm spring night, a baby lies alone in her pram, her mother vanishing into the crowds。

A year on, Kim Gillespie’s absence casts a long shadow as her friends and loved ones gather deep in the heart of South Australian wine country to welcome a new addition to the family。

Joining the celebrations is federal investigator Aaron Falk。 But as he soaks up life in the lush valley, he begins to suspect this tight-knit group may be more fractured than it seems。

Between Falk’s closest friend, a missing mother, and a woman he’s drawn to, dark questions linger as long-ago truths begin to emerge。

An outstanding novel, a brilliant mystery and a heart-pounding read from the author of The Dry, Force of Nature, The Lost Man and The Survivors。

Love her books and this was no exception。 Slow start but then I was hooked。

Jane Harper can do no wrong。 I shockingly solved the mystery but the journey to the end was enjoyable as always。 Love her atmospheric reads。

I love everything by Jane Harper。 And I love Aaron Falk as a character。 This one I didn’t expect the twist at all。 Loved it!

3。8 stars for me。 Not quite 4 stars as the book seemed to be a bit slow to start, with no ideas as to what happened to kim。 Was a bit surprised when it all was revealed, so a good surprise

This was fine, just soo slloowww

Overall good! Wouldn’t consider this a “thriller” as it was pretty slow, but good plot and characters。 Liked all the family relationships and found family。

Kim Gillespie has gone missing。 And even more mysterious? She’s left her baby in her pram right in the middle of a carnival。 I’m not sure I could imagine any mother I know willingly walking away from her baby in that setting, so suffice to say, those closest to her expect the worst。 But there are those who think maybe having another baby after so many years was just too much。 So which was it?The story opens on the first anniversary of Kim’s disappearance。 Our key characters are her teen daughter Kim Gillespie has gone missing。 And even more mysterious? I’ve listened to audiobooks pretty religiously for the past couple years and I really enjoy this alternate way of experiencing a book。I enjoyed the narration。 I thought the narrator did an excellent job, but it the story itself did drag a bit for me throughout the middle part。 Once we got closer the end, I was totally enthralled and thoroughly enjoyed the story。 I did have to go back at the end, because I felt I had missed something。 But I think the main issue is that some of the ending is more subtle than relates well to an audio version。Special thanks to Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for an advanced audiobook of this title。 This one is available now。 。。。more

And what must have been her mental state to leave her younger daughter, a mere 6 weeks old, behind in a carriage by the festival gates? And then there was another unsolved incident six years before, a hit and run that took the life of the husband of a woman Aaron had met (and liked very much) in Melbourne some time before。 While Aaron enjoys the hospitality of Greg’s extended family at his brother vineyard, he and Greg and the rest of the family participate in an appeal to festival goers to report anything relating to the missing woman’s absence they may have observed the year before。 Aaron had been there the year before and, while maybe a bit distracted by the woman he had met several months before, feels that there’s something obvious that he missed。 And it’s a two-for when some things begin to make sense about the hit and run that killed his lady-love’s husband。 。。。more

Really good thriller, following on from her earlier books about Falk。 She tells a good tale, with very believable characters。 Recommended!

Pretty disappointed with this one。 It was incredibly sloooowwwwwwww。 Love the other two in the series though。

I love this series。 Jane Harper is such an amazing writer and creates such rich characters。 You definitely feel emotionally attached to the characters in the book。This was a slow burn about two different mysteries。 I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I’ve really enjoyed Jane Harper’s other books but I didn’t find this one as compelling。 It was all grand… characters were grand。。 story was interesting but very slow to unfold… ending grand …。 All quite forgettable。

Aaron Falk visits his cop friend and family on their South Australian vineyard during the yearly festival。 It is the one year anniversary of the disappearance of a mother, who left her new baby in her stroller under the Ferris wheel and seemingly vanished into thin air。 Her teenage daughter gives a moving speech and a plea for anyone who was at the last year's festival and might have seem her mother to come forward with any information。 Aaron Falk visits his cop friend and family on their South Australian vineyard during the yearly festival。 It is the one year anniversary of the disappearance of a mother, who left her new baby in her stroller under the Ferris wheel and seemingly vanished into thin air。 Her teenage daughter gives a moving speech and a plea for anyone who was at the last year's festival and might have seem her mother to come forward with any information。 。。。more

What a writer! I looked forward to this book for months, and wasn't disappointed。 She's a clever storyteller, writes concise, realistic dialogue, and paints Australia so vividly, you can smell it and see it。 What a writer! 4。5。 I absolutely love this series with Aaron Falk an Australian police officer。 And this latest did not disappoint。 Suspenseful - two deaths in the past 6 years。 No one caught for the first and no body found for the supposed second。

3。75 stars rounded up While this was good, I didn't love it quite as much as I had hoped, and it took me a long time to get into it。 *The third in the Aaron Falk series, he is visiting friends for their baby's christening but it's also the one year anniversary of one of their close friends disappearing。 Falk gets involved in that as well as another mystery that has haunted the town。 *I really liked the ending of this, how everything came together。 There were no obvious red herrings, which was an 3。75 stars rounded up While this was good, I didn't love it quite as much as I had hoped, and it took me a long time to get into it。 *The third in the Aaron Falk series, he is visiting friends for their baby's christening but it's also the one year anniversary of one of their close friends disappearing。 Falk gets involved in that as well as another mystery that has haunted the town。 *I really liked the ending of this, how everything came together。 There were no obvious red herrings, which was an interesting approach, and meant every guess I made about what happened was just that, a wild guess, and unsurprisingly I was completely wrong。 *I did think there were a lot of characters to keep track of, especially since the relationships overlap, and it took me a long time to feel emotionally connected to the story。 I think maybe if this had taken place immediately after the woman's disappearance instead of a year later, it would have been more engaging with a sense of urgency? I'm not sure, but I didn't feel compelled to keep reading until about 2/3 through。 * Still good though, I'm glad it stuck it out, and I will definitely keep reading the series!  。。。more

First Harper book and I’ve read it for book club。 To be honest, I haven’t had a huge desire to read any of these before now, but I enjoyed this one so might go read the start of the series。 Good pacing and well written, kept me interested the whole way。 Recommended。

I usually love Jane Harper’s books, but this one really dragged, evident by how long it took me to read (I was very busy also)。 There were too many characters and subplots and I found myself not engaging with large chunks of the story。 Good beginning and end and few other good bits throughout but overall disappointing。

Good premise。 Beautiful cover。 Pleasant writing style。 But no crime puzzle but a boring love story and family drama (all those wasted parts about the little kids, and babys and relationships, blahblahblah - eyeroll)。 Dull dialog。 Annoying resolution。 Cliché, Cliché。 Plus the one epiphany about the case I had long, long before Aaron Falk。 Come on!But the worst was: After 80% Harper changed POV to the victim to tell us what happend because the hero couldn't。 That's a cheap move and lazy writing。 I Good premise。 Beautiful cover。 Pleasant writing style。 But no crime puzzle but a boring love story and family drama (all those wasted parts about the little kids, and babys and relationships, blahblahblah - eyeroll)。 Dull dialog。 Annoying resolution。 Cliché, Cliché。 Plus the one epiphany about the case I had long, long before Aaron Falk。 Come on!But the worst was: After 80% Harper changed POV to the victim to tell us what happend because the hero couldn't。 That's a cheap move and lazy writing。 I skimmed the last 20 to 30 pages so mad I was at the outcome。 Bummer! A fitting end to the Aaron Falk Trilogy。Without giving away any spoilers, there is more than one mystery to solve here and more than one story to be told。I love the interaction and relationships between the characters and I love that Jane Harper keeps me interested (and theorising) throughout the whole book。As with the other books in this series, I went back and forward guessing these answers right up to the end。 Absolutely gripping and a truly un-put-downable book。Am I glad I read it - yes, wit A fitting end to the Aaron Falk Trilogy。Without giving away any spoilers, there is more than one mystery to solve here and more than one story to be told。I love the interaction and relationships between the characters and I love that Jane Harper keeps me interested (and theorising) throughout the whole book。As with the other books in this series, I went back and forward guessing these answers right up to the end。 Absolutely gripping and a truly un-put-downable book。Am I glad I read it - yes, without a doubt。Was it a waste of my time - definitely not。Would I sit down and read it all over again - I certainly would。Would I read more by this author based on this book - yes, I am a fan。I listened to the Bolinda Audio version of this book。 I found the narrator great to listen to and perfectly suited to the story。 。。。more

I don't usually enjoy slow-burn mysteries, but something about Jane Harper's writing always keeps me hooked。 I enjoyed this book the best out of the Aaron Falk series, because though the Dry had a more interesting story, I think this one was better written, which made it more compelling for me。 I don't usually enjoy slow-burn mysteries, but something about Jane Harper's writing always keeps me hooked。 I enjoyed this book the best out of the Aaron Falk series, because though the Dry had a more interesting story, I think this one was better written, which made it more compelling for me。 。。。more
