Summary

In the city of Ombrazia, saints and their disciples rule with a terrifying power, playing favorites while the unfavored struggle to survive。

Rossana Lacertosa doesn’t believe in saints。 After her father’s murder at the hands of the Ombrazia military, she’s willing to do whatever it takes to dismantle the corrupt system。 Even if she has to pay for it in blood—or face the boy who broke her heart。

Damian Venturi is sworn to protect the city。 As the youngest captain of the Palazzo security in history, Damian is expected to be ruthless, strong, and to serve the saints with unquestioning devotion。 But three years spent fighting a gruesome, never-ending war left Damian with deeper scars than he wants to admit…and too many questions he’s afraid to ask。

When a murderer begins using the city’s slums as a hunting ground, targeting the weak and unprotected, the saints and their disciples are all too happy to look the other way。 That is until a disciple ends up in the morgue。 Tasked with finding the disciple’s killer, Damian’s investigation leads him to Roz, his childhood friend turned enemy。 Together, they will have to put their past feelings aside to find the truth hiding in the pitch-black underbelly of Ombrazia。

As they unravel the mysteries behind the murders, they will discover that there’s something far more sinister—and far less holy—lurking beneath the surface。 With darkness closing in and time running out, will Roz and Damian be able to save their city from an evil so powerful that it threatens to destroy everything in its path?

I absolutely loved this book。 The mystery grips you from the beginning, and although the final plot twist was a bit predictable, each chapter carried the tension enough for me to keep turning the page。 This is not an enemies to lovers though, it's more a childhood friends to lovers to estranged traumatized teens。 Still, I loved the relationship between Damian and Roz and the pining and angst。 That said, Damian is my favorite: Soft conflicted boy that makes you wanna hug him。 At the end I found m I absolutely loved this book。 The mystery grips you from the beginning, and although the final plot twist was a bit predictable, each chapter carried the tension enough for me to keep turning the page。 This is not an enemies to lovers though, it's more a childhood friends to lovers to estranged traumatized teens。 Still, I loved the relationship between Damian and Roz and the pining and angst。 That said, Damian is my favorite: Soft conflicted boy that makes you wanna hug him。 At the end I found myself craving more of this fantasy world and I don't know if it wasn't explored more due to the wordcount。 The italian setting and the saints magic system was interesting but you don't really see magic hapenning throughout the book。 It would have been cool to see how each magic type worked and how that affects the world beyond the social hierarchies。 Even roz doesn't use her magic almost at all and I was kind of expecting she would come around and really take advantage of it by the end。 My biggest critique is that the author could leave the saints but take all magic out and the story would remain the same。 Still, very enjoyable book and I'll definitely read the sequel。 。。。more

I think it’s edgy for the sake of being edgy。 I appreciated the mystery aspect。

The first thing I noticed in this book is that you can feel the rage。 It’s a rage very familiar to me, because I’ve seen it in many people, some of them close to me。 It honestly felt very satisfying to see the brainwashing that plagues some characters slowly coming undone。 I also enjoyed how the pace changes, from the slower beginning, where things aren’t fully in motion yet and the reader is still growing accustomed to the characters and the lore, to the middle of the book, where there are so m The first thing I noticed in this book is that you can feel the rage。 It’s a rage very familiar to me, because I’ve seen it in many people, some of them close to me。 It honestly felt very satisfying to see the brainwashing that plagues some characters slowly coming undone。 I also enjoyed how the pace changes, from the slower beginning, where things aren’t fully in motion yet and the reader is still growing accustomed to the characters and the lore, to the middle of the book, where there are so many threads to follow and the protagonists have to divide their time between their already busy schedules, the investigation and their personal lives, to the ending, where they have to face more than they had originally prepared for and have to frantically adapt to unexpected events。I’m curious to see how this author will grow and what awaits us in her future work! 。。。more

OMG!! I absolutely loved this one so much!It honestly had me guessing and being suspicious of literally everyone。 It was dark, creepy, very funny, and a little spicy, and super mysterious。 The world building I hope is going to be explored more in the series。 I did have a hard time keeping some names together as they were just very unique names, but all in all would recommend this one!

Overall, this story is very enjoyable。 In terms of dark, horror fantasy, I loved the world building, the characters, and the complexity of the mystery。 The mystery was riveting and exciting。 I genuinely could not put the book down (read it in a single sitting) because I couldn't wait to see what happened next。 But, the things that did not work for me was occasionally the pacing and, what felt like to me, the 0 to 60 relationship between the two protagonists。 (view spoiler)[The book sets up a com Overall, this story is very enjoyable。 In terms of dark, horror fantasy, I loved the world building, the characters, and the complexity of the mystery。 The mystery was riveting and exciting。 I genuinely could not put the book down (read it in a single sitting) because I couldn't wait to see what happened next。 But, the things that did not work for me was occasionally the pacing and, what felt like to me, the 0 to 60 relationship between the two protagonists。 (view spoiler)[The book sets up a complex relationship between characters who have a very deep and haunting past。 I expected a very slow burn and possibly no resolution between the two。 Which I think would have worked。 Instead, the two characters reunite fairly quickly and seemingly resolve all their problems by the end of the book。 I don't think that's necessarily a problem if this is going to be a standalone novel。 However, as it seems to be the first of a new series, I would have liked to have explored that complexity and tension more。 Let them struggle with each other more than they did。 Nevertheless, the book was very enjoyable。 This dichotomy of saints giving magic, along with the question if the saints are even real anymore, is fun to read and opens the doors to so much possibility。 (hide spoiler)] M。K。 Lobb did a fantastic job with her prose and characters ((view spoiler)[I did suspect the antagonist from the very beginning, but I'm not sure if that's because I naturally suspect these sorts of things or if the foreshadowing was not as subtle as intended (hide spoiler)])。 I look forward to whatever comes next! 。。。more

I went into this book not expecting much, but it was the opposite of what I expected。 I really enjoyed it。 Is it super interesting storyline-wise? No。 But I love the pining aspect of the story。 I have never read anything like it。 Also I'm a big fan of female rage, which was also present in this book。 What I never have seen in a fantasy story is a character with PTSD because of a war。 Is was really good that this was included。 So yeah, good book。 Will read the next one。 I went into this book not expecting much, but it was the opposite of what I expected。 I really enjoyed it。 Is it super interesting storyline-wise? This is an amazing debut novel! MK Lobb's writing is detailed, dark, and full of surprises! I love the scenery that she painted for us and I adored many of the characters。 This is a dark fantasy but is YA so the darker aspects are age appropriate while still being enjoyable by a wide range of ages。I felt like the religious aspects paired with the world building and the power system were all very unique and I enjoyed them immensely。I can't wait to read what M。K Lobby writes next and she will 100% This is an amazing debut novel! Another book I went into blind。 This is a different kind of fantasy book。 It was a good read, but for me I felt that it was disjointed and I really wanted to know more about the Society。 The characters were not well rounded and were rather wooden。 As I said a good read but it could have been so much more!!!!!Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review。

Seven Faceless Saints was an interesting fantasy murder mystery。Once, there were seven saints, but after the first war of saints the people removed every trace of Chaos and his disciples, now they worship only six。 When the Disciple of Death is found dead in his chambers Damian is tasked with finding his killer, or else he’ll be shipped back to the second war of saints, which he barely survived。 Ros’ father was killed for desertion, and now she works against the very system that she benefits fro Seven Faceless Saints was an interesting fantasy murder mystery。Once, there were seven saints, but after the first war of saints the people removed every trace of Chaos and his disciples, now they worship only six。 When the Disciple of Death is found dead in his chambers Damian is tasked with finding his killer, or else he’ll be shipped back to the second war of saints, which he barely survived。 Ros’ father was killed for desertion, and now she works against the very system that she benefits from as a disciple, but when she crosses Damian’s path things become more complicated than she could have imagined。 I enjoyed the mystery of Seven Faceless Saints。 I like thrillers as well as fantasy, and this had that kind of murder-mystery feel to it。 The magic system was interesting, and seeing the class system it has created from two different (and unusual) perspectives gives us a more rounded view of the world。 The city felt rich and well imagined, as did the main characters we encountered throughout。 I enjoyed the unravelling of the mystery, and the way they went about it。 Overall, Seven Faceless Saints was an interesting YA fantasy novel, and I will continue the series in the future。 。。。more

DNFed at 44%, I just wasn't feeling this one。 I have more exciting things to read, this felt super slow to me, and I'm not one for mysteries。 The relationship was a lot of telling us how to feel rather than showing us their past and their feelings, it felt rather unfounded。 I did really enjoy the seven Saints and how they bestow powers on some people and have their own guilds。 It felt really original DNFed at 44%, I just wasn't feeling this one。 I have more exciting things to read, this felt super slow to me, and I'm not one for mysteries。 The relationship was a lot of telling us how to feel rather than showing us their past and their feelings, it felt rather unfounded。 I did really enjoy the seven Saints and how they bestow powers on some people and have their own guilds。 It felt really original 。。。more

I suspect that when I get a hold of the "read with your eyes" edition that this will go up in rating。 But for now。The audiobook。 Both (all three? There were definitely two, there may have been a third one for the one off POVs) narrators were surprisingly good。 Actually, I'm studiously not looking up who the dude is because he did some things with his voice when voicing Forte that make me want to roll around in his voice。 Hence, I've got no idea who he is so I can't go looking for more books he's I suspect that when I get a hold of the "read with your eyes" edition that this will go up in rating。 But for now。The audiobook。 Both (all three? I'm definitely curious and delighted。 We get such a small little snippet of the world, with the entire book taking place in one city。 Mostly。 There is a brief interlude on a boat。 And I'm delighted。I know this just came out, but when are we getting the sequel? 。。。more

Or a cop drama in Italy? I was curious to learn more about the saints and the first war but the rest of it was so different from what I’d expected and not to my taste。 This is all subjective, of course, but I’m still left feeling like this book does not quite fit the genre or category it was published in。 It is mostly written well (though there’s an argument to be made that it’s overwritten at parts) but the language, and even some character quirks, were occasionally repetitive。 I’m sure there will be readers who relate to the characters’ struggle with Religion As Oppressive Institution, but I found it a surface-level and over simplified evaluation of personal deconstruction that barely grapples with what losing your faith or belief system means for your identity and what it looks like。 All in all, this just wasn’t for me on almost every front, sorry to say。 。。。more

the more i learn about the fantasy genre the more i start to realize that the fantasy genre slaps。 i read a lot of debut authors and the main thing i have found falls a bit short in debut books is the pacing but that is entirely not the case for this book whatsoever。 every scene had a purpose and every character - and there are a lot of them - provide enough for each moment for you to fully understand them and their purpose to the story。 the world building was explained incredibly well and i did the more i learn about the fantasy genre the more i start to realize that the fantasy genre slaps。 i read a lot of debut authors and the main thing i have found falls a bit short in debut books is the pacing but that is entirely not the case for this book whatsoever。 every scene had a purpose and every character - and there are a lot of them - provide enough for each moment for you to fully understand them and their purpose to the story。 the world building was explained incredibly well and i didn’t find myself confused at all。 initially i was like “oh shit how am i going to remember all of this” but as the story continued through the lens of both characters you still get a full sense of everything that matters within the world without it feeling forced。 obviously i wanted more。 but i wanted more because it’s the first book in the series and now i have to wait for the next one like a sad peasant begging in the streets of a medieval village。 but alas, that’s just good storytelling to make us beg and want to sell our firstborn to read more。 the characters are literally terribly flawed people and that’s what makes them so great。 like, no offense but roz genuinely is kind of the worst but she knows what she’s fighting for and that’s what fuels her - both her strengths and her weaknesses。 and damien is a himbo。 which is cute for someone who literally is the most chaotic individual who people trust with a gun。 there’s this subtle debate about freewill in a world where literal saints have created their disciples in their own imagine and people are just expected to follow blindly and the fact that more people aren’t questioning this honestly baffles me but, alas, for the sake of the plot and all that definitely recommend giving this a read。 started it too late last night to give myself the proper time to read through it in one sitting as i would have liked but it reads real fast and you can’t go wrong 。。。more
