Summary

A curmudgeonly professor journeys to a small town in the far north to study faerie folklore and discovers dark fae magic, friendship, and love in the start of a heartwarming and enchanting new fantasy series。

Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries。 She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world's first encyclopaedia of faerie lore。 But Emily Wilde is not good at people。 She could never make small talk at a party--or even get invited to one。 And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people。

So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk。 Nor does she care to spend time with another new arrival: her dashing and insufferably handsome academic rival Wendell Bambleby, who manages to charm the townsfolk, get in the middle of Emily's research, and utterly confound and frustrate her。

But as Emily gets closer and closer to uncovering the secrets of the Hidden Ones--the most elusive of all faeries--lurking in the shadowy forest outside the town, she also finds herself on the trail of another mystery: Who is Wendell Bambleby, and what does he really want? To find the answer, she'll have to unlock the greatest mystery of all--her own heart。

THE BEST BOOK I’BE READ SO FAR THIS YEAR。 Literally this book was made for me。 The fae lore, the stories, the Forest descriptions, the ice Fae, the adorable relationships and found family。 I just cannot even say how much I love this book。 Definitely a new all time favorite!!!!!

Thoroughly loved this one!! I was hesitant as some of the early reviews weren't that promising。 But I loved the format, the story, and just a hint of romance。 I was a "dry" read as the format is more about trying to keep the journal more research-y than personal so you don't always get Emily's feelings but I thought it worked wonderfully (and on a side I thought it was one of the more successful epistolary/journal books)。 I also loved the footnotes and the way Fawcett was able to weave in Wendal Thoroughly loved this one!! This was a charming cozy fantasy with a research focused female scientist and a Howl-like romantic lead。 The idea of a world where faeries are known, real creatures that are scientifically studied made for an intriguing setting with trickster creatures lurking about the landscape。 The author clearly did their own research into faeries, referencing all sorts of different types of faeries from all over the world。 Some were helpful towards humans, some were tricksters and some were ominous creature This was a charming cozy fantasy with a research focused female scientist and a Howl-like romantic lead。 The idea of a world where faeries are known, real creatures that are scientifically studied made for an intriguing setting with trickster creatures lurking about the landscape。 The author clearly did their own research into faeries, referencing all sorts of different types of faeries from all over the world。 Some were helpful towards humans, some were tricksters and some were ominous creatures straight from dark fairytales。 I loved how ominous the Hidden Ones were, built up to be the dark creatures waiting to trick and torment hapless mortals。 And the Hidden Ones didn’t disappoint。The rivalry and bickering between the two scholars really felt like two people with few intellectual peers and stuck being friends, regardless of how much they drove each other crazy。 Emily was a great lead, the genius scientist devoted to her research and socially awkward, while Wendell was charming and spoiled。 The comparison between her being messy and unconcerned with the stake of her barren living quarters, while Wendell demanded the finest things in life and devoted himself to repairing things to his liking (even things that weren’t his) was super fun。I loved this cozy fantasy and can’t wait for more in this series! I was surprised by how much I loved this book and am eager to check out more by this author and more in the cozy fantasy genre 。。。more

I truly didn’t want this story to end。 I loved all of it。 Any book that can make me laugh, tear up, and yell out at the characters is a 5 star read, but one that makes me do all 3 gets a special place in my heart。 Impatiently waiting for the sequel

I’ll give it 3。5。 I really enjoyed this book and thought it had a ton of potential, but some of the writing annoyed me。 Overall though I was very excited to cuddle up and read whenever I got the chance。

What a fantastical and atmospheric read。 The magic system is entirely too believable, and I am entirely invested in the next adventure to come。 I love the academic world Emily thrives in, and I also love the raucous nature Bambleby adds to the story。 I need more of them in my life immediately。

This book felt like it was written for me。 The sardonic humor, the atmosphere, the descriptive writing, the occult, the characters… I can’t get over this story。 It’s a love letter to all of us who have been obsessed with stories of Fae/fairies our entire lives。 I adored the dynamic relationship between our main characters。 I loved ALL the characters。 This book didn’t have many throwaways, and even then you got a sense of their personality for however long they were a part of the story, growing f This book felt like it was written for me。 The sardonic humor, the atmosphere, the descriptive writing, the occult, the characters… I can’t get over this story。 It’s a love letter to all of us who have been obsessed with stories of Fae/fairies our entire lives。 I adored the dynamic relationship between our main characters。 I loved ALL the characters。 This book didn’t have many throwaways, and even then you got a sense of their personality for however long they were a part of the story, growing fond of even the most mundanely described individual。 I honestly felt transported to this place, which isn’t super rare but when it’s done well 🤌🏼 So many passages filled with whimsy and passion, it was an incredibly enjoyable read。 Entirely ecstatic to learn this is the beginning of a future series, or at least a duology。 Another favorite book added to the (long) list。Note: I learned/reacquainted myself with a new (human) word every few pages while reading this book; so if you like deeply understanding what you’re reading, or expanding your vocabulary as I do, have a dictionary handy (expatiating, insouciant, obsequious, dudgeon, temerity, mien - the list goes on。 It was so fun) 。。。more

Really enjoyed this somewhat eccentric faerie tale, Emily is awkwardly wonderful and her banter with long-suffering Wendell had me laughing out loud on a regular basis。 The adventure was as image rich as the studies and "gathered folk tales" that peppered the story and added up to a beautiful mismatch (just like Emily and Wendell, really!) that was thoroughly enjoyable to read。 Really enjoyed this somewhat eccentric faerie tale, Emily is awkwardly wonderful and her banter with long-suffering Wendell had me laughing out loud on a regular basis。 The adventure was as image rich as the studies and "gathered folk tales" that peppered the story and added up to a beautiful mismatch (just like Emily and Wendell, really!) that was thoroughly enjoyable to read。 。。。more

My word, I loved this。 The setting, the voice, the interactions with the faeries and locals - this was everything I love, and reminded me of A Natural History of Dragons。 Someone please tell me there will be many, many books in this series, because I want to keep reading them forever。

DNF @ 59%I am obviously in minority here, but I found this book to be incredibly boring and very slowly paced。 Emily as an FMC does not work for me, because I found her incredibly dull。 The book is written in journal entries and that is not working either, because we get thousands of lines of monologue, but very little conversation。 The main male character is not working for me either。 And this is just me, but when there is a potential romance, I do not want the characters to be involved with so DNF @ 59%I am obviously in minority here, but I found this book to be incredibly boring and very slowly paced。 Emily as an FMC does not work for me, because I found her incredibly dull。 The book is written in journal entries and that is not working either, because we get thousands of lines of monologue, but very little conversation。 The main male character is not working for me either。 And this is just me, but when there is a potential romance, I do not want the characters to be involved with somebody else during the book。 Like, I am fine to know, that they had previous partners, but in this book the main male character boning other girls in the same house they live in and I just really did not like that, and I know they were not yet together, but it is a pet peeve of mine。 。。。more
