Summary

Senior year at Ellingham Academy for Stevie Bell isn’t going well。 Her boyfriend, David, is studying in London。 Her friends are obsessed with college applications。 With the cold case of the century solved, Stevie is adrift。 There is nothing to distract her from the questions pinging around her brain—questions about college, love, and life in general。

Relief comes when David invites Stevie and her friends to join him for study abroad, and his new friend Izzy introduces her to a double-murder cold case。 In 1995, nine friends from Cambridge University went to a country house and played a drunken game of hide-and-seek。 Two were found in the woodshed the next day, murdered with an ax。

The case was assumed to be a burglary gone wrong, but one of the remaining seven saw something she can’t explain。 This was no break-in。 Someone’s lying about what happened in the woodshed。

Seven suspects。 Two murders。 One killer still playing a deadly game。

I enjoyed this one but I definitely have to say this is the weakest book in the Truly Devious series。I know I am gonna have some people come after for saying it is the weakest but it is in this one we don't have as much character development as the others, the plot sometimes felt like it was at a standstill multiple times in this book and there was way too much repetitiveness going on throughout this book。 i also felt the main character did things way out of character sometimes that were just li I enjoyed this one but I definitely have to say this is the weakest book in the Truly Devious series。I know I am gonna have some people come after for saying it is the weakest but it is in this one we don't have as much character development as the others, the plot sometimes felt like it was at a standstill multiple times in this book and there was way too much repetitiveness going on throughout this book。 i also felt the main character did things way out of character sometimes that were just like what the heck moments。 despite all of that there were some really great moments that kept me reading like all the reveals and the one on ones we would get with some of the characters like Stevie and Nate。 The ending was a total plot twist I did not see coming and that is making me excited for the next book。 。。。more

So the book and mystery were amazing as I knew they would be, but it isn't fair to judge the entire book by that super shocking ending。 It was a cliff hanger。 And so, we now know that there will be another book。 So, now we get that lovely time of waiting and chewing off our fingernails。 But yeah, I did love the book, and I will wait and reserve judgement about that ending, depending on what happens in the next。 So the book and mystery were amazing as I knew they would be, but it isn't fair to judge the entire book by that super shocking ending。 It was a cliff hanger。 And so, we now know that there will be another book。 So, now we get that lovely time of waiting and chewing off our fingernails。 But yeah, I did love the book, and I will wait and reserve judgement about that ending, depending on what happens in the next。 。。。more

My least favorite book。 Rather boring, it a lot happening, even at the end when everything was coming together for Stevie。 Definitely didn’t like the a abrupt ending。 This is is amazing author and storyteller and I love her books, but this one just didn’t do it for me。

FUN & ENTERTAINING MYSTERY!🌸GOOD TO KNOW:- One POV- Dual Timeline- Young Adult- Mystery- Murders-Part of the Truly Devious series, but can be read as a standalone。》WHAT I LIKED: ▪︎The mystery was great。 Much of the book was about looking for clues, and that kept me entertained and guessing until the very end。▪︎There was a dual timeline and interviews that helped to find out what the suspects said at the time about the matter。 You just want to know who was lying, or maybe everyone was。 Who knows! The first 4 books were delightful, but this one lost its charm for me。 Fun concept, but the mystery and original characters fell flat。 Probably my last of these

I have been firmly entrenched in this series for a while now and I always remain to have one foot in it。 It captured me right from the beginning and I love returning back to them。 Back with Stevie and friends, this time, with an English twist! I loved it。 As a English gal, I also appreciated all the research the author did to get the British lingo down。 The references and slang were spot on。 This one was just as epic as all of the others and I can never put them down。 This one was the same and e I have been firmly entrenched in this series for a while now and I always remain to have one foot in it。 It captured me right from the beginning and I love returning back to them。 Back with Stevie and friends, this time, with an English twist! As David is studying in England, Stevie & gang manage to wrangle themselves an educational trip abroad, and of course, Stevie manages to find herself in the midst of intrigue and murder …A cold case, 9 friends and 2 murders (with more to come?) Can Stevie solve the case in time before she returns home? I devoured this story and couldn’t read it fast enough。 And now yep, I definitely need more。 After that ending! GAH。 I need the next one now。 。。。more

Quite possibly my favorite Stevie Bell book yet! Same delightfully quirky crew, but with some fresh energy via a new setting in an English country mansion。 Some have complained about the larger cast of characters and the semi-cliffhanger ending, but it all worked for me。

Jill VanWormer

I love Stevie Bell and I love this series。 It’s very modern day Nancy Drew。 I thought this case was interesting and I liked the interactions between the Nine。 I wish we would have seen more of Stevie’s crew in this one though。 The ending definitely feels like another book is coming!

I get the long distance and the loneliness and anxiety that comes from being so far away from your partner。 I feel as though people are being to way to harsh on Stevie for how she was feeling, I mean for Christ sake they were laying in bed together with her head on his chest which would put me in an upset mood too, but I do think both parties should have been more for I feel as though this book more so focused on what is going on in everyone lives more so than the mystery, which is totally fine! So that was uh not that great。。。 There were WAY too many characters going on in this book。 I could not tell many of them apart from one another because they were all just bland。

Not as good as 1-4 in the series and at one point I was like I probably won’t get the next one but at the very end I was like… gotta get the next one!

I really enjoy this series of cozy mysteries。 Was it the most believable? Not really。 Was it still super fun to read and revisit characters? Totally。

What on earth was that ending?! For a 5-book series with characters we grew to care about, that ending was wholly unsatisfying。 The rest of the book was good。 The mystery was a bit far fetched。 The whole plot was a bit far fetched。 It was still an exciting and intriguing read, though。 Very mixed feelings on this。 I still think this series probably should have ended after the initial trilogy。

I love the Stevie Bell universe, and I can't wait to see what she solves next。 I also love that Maureen Johnson started her acknowledgements with "I did it。 I finally wrote an English country house mystery。 This has been a goal of my life。" Because I got hooked on mysteries with English country house stories, and nothing makes me happier than to crack open a book and find a map of the house and grounds。 Compelling story, and she captures that senior year angst so well, I started to worry about m I love the Stevie Bell universe, and I can't wait to see what she solves next。 I also love that Maureen Johnson started her acknowledgements with "I did it。 I finally wrote an English country house mystery。 This has been a goal of my life。" Because I got hooked on mysteries with English country house stories, and nothing makes me happier than to crack open a book and find a map of the house and grounds。 Compelling story, and she captures that senior year angst so well, I started to worry about my college application process and I graduated 20 years ago! 。。。more

Maureen Johnson hooked me with the Shades of London series back in the 2010s, but having left that series hanging high and dry for years, and the diminishing returns on this series to which she’s spent half a decade instead, are really starting to unhook me as a reader of hers。 I mean, it was a bold move to write a single mystery stretched out into a trilogy of novels, then a fourth novel all standalone, and this one with a standalone murder mystery…but the most annoying directions taken on the Maureen Johnson hooked me with the Shades of London series back in the 2010s, but having left that series hanging high and dry for years, and the diminishing returns on this series to which she’s spent half a decade instead, are really starting to unhook me as a reader of hers。 I mean, it was a bold move to write a single mystery stretched out into a trilogy of novels, then a fourth novel all standalone, and this one with a standalone murder mystery…but the most annoying directions taken on the romance front。 I’m not surprised to see a lot of fellow readers immensely disappointed with how Johnson handles this series’ alleged flagship (though at least Janelle and Vi don’t provoke any drama, so there’s that。) And while this book does fulfill a longtime ambition on Johnson’s part to write an English country manor murder mystery, being a part of this series in particular means it relies on some thinly contrived plot reasons why Stevie even gets to go to England to investigate this cold case to begin with。 At least there was the promise of comeuppance for one of the Nine Liars…though I’ll be honest, Nine Wankers would be a more perfect title to describe the obnoxious 1995 uni students around whom this cold case revolves。 I’ll be generous with the two stars, but not for the first time, I’m prepared to drop this series for good。 。。。more

I feel Gypped! What the heck was that? I’m kinda mad right now, at the ending for sure but mostly for the entire book itself。 There was zero set up, nothing was actually investigated and I get it, she had less time, but there was no 24 hour sessions to help solve it。 It felt rushed and unfinished。 Especially compared to the rest of the series!
