Summary

It's too late for a Sweet Sixteen but what if Mahalia had a Coming Out Party? A love letter to romantic comedies, sweet sixteen blowouts, black joy and queer pride。

Mahalia Harris wants。

She wants a big Sweet Sixteen like her best friend Naomi。
She wants the super cute new girl Siobhan to like her back。
She wants a break from worrying--about money, snide remarks from white classmates, pitying looks from church ladies 。 。 。 all of it。

Then inspiration strikes: It's too late for a Sweet Sixteen, but what if she had a Coming Out Party? A singing, dancing, rainbow-cake-eating celebration of queerness on her own terms。

The idea lights a fire in her, and soon Mahalia is scrimping and saving, taking on extra hours at her afterschool job, trying on dresses, and awkwardly flirting with Siobhan, all in preparation for the Coming Out of her dreams。 But it's not long before she's buried in a mountain of bills, unfinished schoolwork, and enough drama to make her English Lit teacher blush。 With all the responsibility on her shoulders, will Mahalia's party be over before it's even begun?

A novel about finding yourself, falling in love, and celebrating what makes you you。

Nothing about this book felt particularly original。 It’s pretty much a standard romance。 Everything also wrapped up very quickly in the end。 I do think there’s a need for more stories featuring queer Black girls so I’m glad it exists in that regard。

- thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc! - this was a cute read! it was sweet to read about a coming out party, and seeing our protagonist work towards what she wanted was nice to see。 overall, a sweet book to read if you want some lgbtqia+ happiness。

Nothing can brighten a dreary, late winter day like a fresh teen rom-com! In Camryn Garrett’s Friday I’m in Love, Mahalia Harris has missed out on the sweet sixteen party of her dreams due to finances (or lack of)。 She decides to plan a coming out party instead, complete with rainbow decorations and the ultimate playlist。 Everything is complicated by money troubles, a flirty but unavailable new girl at school, tension with her bestie, and her single mom’s health scare。 Will the party even happen Nothing can brighten a dreary, late winter day like a fresh teen rom-com! This book is so sweet and adorable--the flirting between Siobhan and Mahalia is a high point, as it feels realistic and not saccharine--but there's plenty of real-world problems thrown in。 In fact, I was a little disappointed that some of the issues with money, Mahalia's dad, and Mahalia's relationship with Naomi weren't resolved better or explored more, but that might have made the book feel overstuffed and cumbersome。 The writing feels a little middle-grade at times, but it's also authenticall This book is so sweet and adorable--the flirting between Siobhan and Mahalia is a high point, as it feels realistic and not saccharine--but there's plenty of real-world problems thrown in。 In fact, I was a little disappointed that some of the issues with money, Mahalia's dad, and Mahalia's relationship with Naomi weren't resolved better or explored more, but that might have made the book feel overstuffed and cumbersome。 The writing feels a little middle-grade at times, but it's also authentically earnest in a way that made the reading experience quick and enjoyable。 If you're looking for a fun LGBTQ+ romance featuring an authentically flawed young woman, read this! 。。。more

Setting: Southern CaliforniaRep: Black queer FMC; Black queer love interestMaybe I'm too British for this book but I do not understand why a teenager with no money is so set on spending $1,400 on a party to come out to her friends when throughout the book she only has about 2 friends anyway, both of whom already know she's queer? Or just didn't work for me。 It didn't help that Mahalia often came off as selfish and rude and kind of stupid, especially in the way she talks to customers at the store Setting: Southern CaliforniaRep: Black queer FMC; Black queer love interestMaybe I'm too British for this book but I do not understand why a teenager with no money is so set on spending $1,400 on a party to come out to her friends when throughout the book she only has about 2 friends anyway, both of whom already know she's queer? There’s never such a thing as too many LGBTQ+ YA books in my opinion, but I just never really got into this one。 The pacing felt slow to be about 70-90% the way through, I skipped a little bit。 Covers a lot of ground and is super important for young adults to have access to, just wasn’t my favorite。

Lots in this book was fantastic, in particular lots about the intersectional identify of being black, queer (bi/pan), and sixteen。 That said, I was a bigger fan of Off the Record as the characters felt more mature and believable to me - of course that’s my own personal take as I’m no longer 16! Still, I’d suggest starting w Off the Record first, then moving to this one。

A lighthearted novel, but I'll be honest, I think this is Garrett's weakest work yet。 The stakes are very low, and the main character comes off as entitled and bitter and I'm really not sure why her best friend forgave her for treating her so poorly。 The secondary characters are also weirdly one-dimensional。 Overall, I just wasn't that enthused by this story, and I hope Garrett's next book will have her more of her authentic voice。 A lighthearted novel, but I'll be honest, I think this is Garrett's weakest work yet。 The stakes are very low, and the main character comes off as entitled and bitter and I'm really not sure why her best friend forgave her for treating her so poorly。 The secondary characters are also weirdly one-dimensional。 Overall, I just wasn't that enthused by this story, and I hope Garrett's next book will have her more of her authentic voice。 。。。more

This book is absolutely incredible! The queer love had me grinning and sobbing by turns。 And I loved the use of music, especially the title song。 The discussion throughout the book on socio-economic status and race were well done and kept the book grounded and real。 This is a new favorite。

Very charming book - but it just wasn’t for me。 I thought I’d give a YA book a chance, and while I’m not completely dissuaded by YA after this book, I might just feel a little too old for some of the aspects of YA。If I was a teen again though I’d definitely be completely obsessed with this book。 It’s funny and a very easy read。 It tackles some challenging topics in a very age appropriate way。

3。5 stars! Fun, quick, full of black queer love and end of high school first love frustrated with life feelings。

Felt very cheesy and very predicatable。 Some of the plot points were unnecessary or not worked out well。 Overall a good read but not worth more than 3 stars

The most amazing cover drew me in, The Cure lyric title hooked me。Really cute YA novel about Mahalia, a queer teen growing up in a home with little money, who is saving for a coming out party after missing out on a sweet sixteen。

I loved this book。 Super cute!

3。5 stars rounded up because Camryn Garrett is exploring the concept of teenagers coming to terms with their sexuality, and that is SO IMPORTANT to showcase to an audience, especially in our current times。 Mahalia and her mom are not financially secure, and Mahalia has to cancel her sweet 16, so she decides to start saving to have a “Coming Out” party instead。 I found the concept of trying to manage money as a teenager so important with balancing school, SATs, a part time job etc。, and I loved h 3。5 stars rounded up because Camryn Garrett is exploring the concept of teenagers coming to terms with their sexuality, and that is SO IMPORTANT to showcase to an audience, especially in our current times。 Mahalia and her mom are not financially secure, and Mahalia has to cancel her sweet 16, so she decides to start saving to have a “Coming Out” party instead。 I found the concept of trying to manage money as a teenager so important with balancing school, SATs, a part time job etc。, and I loved her evolving relationship with Siobhan。 The problem is every other person in Mahalia’a life kind of sucks - her mom has her moments, her best friend Naomi says some super unsupportive comments and her Dad is pretty much absent - a lot of those conflicts could’ve been explored a bit further, but this is my second book by Camryn Garrett I’ve really enjoyed and will definitely check out more。 。。。more

Not rating because I don’t know how。 I read this for book club but I’m not the audience for YA and I don’t think I can correctly judge this。 I think teen me would have liked it though 🤷‍♀️The cover is A+ though。

Friday I'm In Love was a sweet and joyful read, with a very satisfying ending。 I read it in one day - I was invested in finding out what happened, and if Mahalia would achieve her goals。 It's not without its flaws - the characters could have been better developed, and I'm not sure how long the book's plot will stay with me。 However, this is a joyful read - I think it shows (positively) that the author was still a teen herself when she started writing it。 The book feels very current and real, whi Friday I'm In Love was a sweet and joyful read, with a very satisfying ending。 I read it in one day - I was invested in finding out what happened, and if Mahalia would achieve her goals。 It's not without its flaws - the characters could have been better developed, and I'm not sure how long the book's plot will stay with me。 However, this is a joyful read - I think it shows (positively) that the author was still a teen herself when she started writing it。 The book feels very current and real, whilst still having great heart。3。5 stars rounded up to 4。Thanks to Penguin and Netgalley for the ARC。 。。。more

This book was cute, but I feel like nothing was really resolved。 Mahalia copes with her challenges by avoiding them, yet somehow they are all resolved? She gets so swept up in her new crush and romance that she literally drops everything else - and then gets mad when she's called out for it。 The romance was okay, but a bit borderline obsessive on Mahalia's part。 Loved the idea of the coming out party。 This book was cute, but I feel like nothing was really resolved。 Mahalia copes with her challenges by avoiding them, yet somehow they are all resolved? It was a beautiful and super adorable queer romcom, I laughed so much but also cried in many moments, maybe because I came to really connect with mahalia as a character。This was brilliantly written and I hope to see more Mahalia's represented。 It was a beautiful and super adorable queer romcom, I laughed so much but also cried in many moments, maybe because I came to really connect with mahalia as a character。This was brilliantly written and I hope to see more Mahalia's represented。 。。。more
