Who could have taken them? And why? There's only one dog for the job。。。 and Detective Dog Nell is ready to sniff out the culprit!

Written by the brilliant Julia Donaldson and stunningly illustrated by the multi-talented illustrator and printmaker Sara Ogilvie, The Detective Dog is a fast-paced celebration of books, reading, libraries, and the relationship between a little boy and his rather special dog。

The story is about Nell and her solving mysteries and solving mysteries around her house and finding stuff around her house that were missing by Peter。 I really liked this book because I thought that it was cute and I think that students would like it because they would find it interesting。

An absolute fav, this one's a keeper。 Detailed illustrations as the story gets more intricate and intense, I love the thought and care that has gone into the telling of this story。 I used this book to introduce the idea of a library to my kid and he loves it (and is a proud library member now!)。 An absolute fav, this one's a keeper。 Detailed illustrations as the story gets more intricate and intense, I love the thought and care that has gone into the telling of this story。 I used this book to introduce the idea of a library to my kid and he loves it (and is a proud library member now!)。 。。。more

“The Detective Dog” is a story about a dog named Nell。 The book begins by introducing Nell, the Detective Dog。 She solves many mysteries using her keen sense of smell。 On Tuesday through Sunday she works hard solving mysteries around her house, many of them being finding objects lost by Peter, a six year old boy who lives in the same house。 On Mondays she accompanies him to school where there are many more smells, but the smell she loves the most is books。 There are many books about many topics “The Detective Dog” is a story about a dog named Nell。 The book begins by introducing Nell, the Detective Dog。 She solves many mysteries using her keen sense of smell。 On Tuesday through Sunday she works hard solving mysteries around her house, many of them being finding objects lost by Peter, a six year old boy who lives in the same house。 On Mondays she accompanies him to school where there are many more smells, but the smell she loves the most is books。 There are many books about many topics, and she loves them all, and the children love reading the books to her。 Unfortunately, one Monday, the books are missing。 Nell is on the case, she tracks the thief by smell, after finding the hat the thief left behind。 She takes them briefly through the city tracking the smell of the book thief。 When he is found, it turns out he was just borrowing them, without asking。 He just wanted to read books。 Once again Nell has an idea。 She tracks the smell of books to a library where the book thief can borrow all the books he wants。 The books ends on the books having been returned to Peter’s school, where Nell still loves to listen to the children read and the smell of books。 There is one last surprise, but I won’t spoil it here。 There is a new book for the children to read。 The text is written mostly with a AABB rhyming scheme that invokes the feeling of a nursery rhyme。 The poetic style is engaging and may help younger readers with the sounds of words。 The illustrations are mostly large with rich colors。 The art style seems rustic and reminded me of older children’s books。 This may invoke nostalgia in parents and teachers, but may turn off younger children used to more intricate images。 However, I believe it is a timeless style。 The characters are soft with thick lines which will allow for students being read to to be able to see the illustrations even if they are not in the first row。 Hidden on a couple pages are information and story telling that would be missed if only reading the text。 Because the main character is a dog, and most of the secondary characters are young children, I believe this story will be quite well received by young children and can be a great way to introduce them to the value of libraries。 。。。more

Lovely book! While it is a little long and the illustrations are a little too detailed to be fully appreciated in a large story time setting, it would be the perfect book to read to one or two little ones at a time。 The message is so wonderful, (but perhaps I am biased as I work in a library)

Super cute book that was fun to read and look at! The mystery part gets the kids to start thinking while learning that reading is fun and stealing is not the way to go。 Detective Nell, the dog, finds the missing book that had been stolen and has an idea to put the thief on the right track。 By the end of the story Ted was introduced to the library which gives the students information about library cards and borrowing books。

Charlotte Yardy

A jolly little book relaying a message about the joys of reading - Everyone regardless of age, look or size can enjoy a good book。The rhyming included would make this such a fun book to read out loud - It just gives such a happy feel when reading it!

Amy

A totally charming, sweet story about a dog who works not only as a reader dog listening to children read stories but is able to solve a mystery when the books disappear from the classroom one day。 The rhyming text is really well done and fun to read out loud。
