A Today Show #ReadWithJenna Book Club Pick

"Sparkling。" —The New York Times

"An utterly charming and deeply moving portrait of the joys—and the guilt—of trying to find your own way in life。" —Celeste Ng, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Our Missing Hearts

"Lively, funny, poignant 。 。 。 Prepare to fall in love with Maddie。 I did!" —Bonnie Garmus, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry

Maame (ma-meh) has many meanings in Twi but in my case, it means woman。

It’s fair to say that Maddie’s life in London is far from rewarding。 With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing), Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s。 At work, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting。

When her mum returns from her latest trip to Ghana, Maddie leaps at the chance to get out of the family home and finally start living。 A self-acknowledged late bloomer, she’s ready to experience some important “firsts”: She finds a flat share, says yes to after-work drinks, pushes for more recognition in her career, and throws herself into the bewildering world of internet dating。 But it's not long before tragedy strikes, forcing Maddie to face the true nature of her unconventional family, and the perils—and rewards—of putting her heart on the line。

Smart, funny, and deeply affecting, Jessica George's Maame deals with the themes of our time with humor and poignancy: from familial duty and racism, to female pleasure, the complexity of love, and the life-saving power of friendship。 Most important, it explores what it feels like to be torn between two homes and cultures―and it celebrates finally being able to find where you belong。

"Meeting Maame feels like falling in love for the first time: warm, awkward, joyous, a little bit heartbreaking and, most of all, unforgettable。" —Xochitl Gonzalez, New York Times bestselling author of Olga Dies Dreaming

Charming, funny and emotionally on point。 Maddie is memorable and I completely rooted for her。

This was probably closer to a 3。5。 It was a great depiction of the challenges of balancing family, friends, culture and race all while being young and trying to find your place in the world。 My heart broke for Maddie as she navigated the soup of her life。 I found the observations on grieving to be very poignant。

really enjoyed maddie’s character and all she experienced in the book。 some parts were a little slow & some parts seemed a little unrealistic。 other than that it was really good

Well。 I don't know how I find myself relating so well to a first-generation, 25-year old Ghanaian woman living in England。 And yet, I did。 Maame (or Maddie) is such a wonderful, complex and yet relatable character。 She is the de-facto sole caretaker of her father, who suffers with Parkinson's disease。 She is a people-pleaser who finally takes a stand and moves out and moves on。 I won't give away the rest of the story, but this was just a sweet and wonderful book。 I highly recommend。 Well。 I don't know how I find myself relating so well to a first-generation, 25-year old Ghanaian woman living in England。 And yet, I did。 Maame (or Maddie) is such a wonderful, complex and yet relatable character。 She is the de-facto sole caretaker of her father, who suffers with Parkinson's disease。 She is a people-pleaser who finally takes a stand and moves out and moves on。 I won't give away the rest of the story, but this was just a sweet and wonderful book。 I highly recommend。 。。。more

Another book I don’t know I needed。 Everything about this book was perfectly executed。 I also think this is the type of story that everyone could draw something from。 Just all around would recommend

Parts of this book touched my tender heart-about losing your father, grief and regret and life after loss。 Other parts made me laugh (the friends and dating parts) the character is so much younger than me (v single and inexperienced in life) from a world away but I felt close to her in away that only people who have lost a parent do。 I very much identified at moments of the book, how to live with loss, knowing the author wrote this, it was for people like me who need to identify with this thing Parts of this book touched my tender heart-about losing your father, grief and regret and life after loss。 Other parts made me laugh (the friends and dating parts) the character is so much younger than me (v single and inexperienced in life) from a world away but I felt close to her in away that only people who have lost a parent do。 I very much identified at moments of the book, how to live with loss, knowing the author wrote this, it was for people like me who need to identify with this thing left behind after someone who meant so much dies。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 I loved Maddie and related to her so well! The story kept me engaged and reminded me a bit of Their Eyes Were Watching God with the progression of Maddie’s love life。 It sounds like some of the story is autobiographical。 There were times when I was a little exhausted by Maddie’s depression, but that is also a sign of excellent writing。

This is one of the books I've read that I know I'll always remember。 I love the way Maddie's character is so relatable, growing up as on of the older children in a family is no easy task as you unknowingly take on responsibility you may not be ready for。 This book caused me to shed a lot of tears but especially whenever Maddie struggled with her mental health。 Jessica George has done an absolutely outstanding job with her book and I highly recommend that you read it。♡ This is one of the books I've read that I know I'll always remember。 I love the way Maddie's character is so relatable, growing up as on of the older children in a family is no easy task as you unknowingly take on responsibility you may not be ready for。 This book caused me to shed a lot of tears but especially whenever Maddie struggled with her mental health。 Jessica George has done an absolutely outstanding job with her book and I highly recommend that you read it。♡ 。。。more

This is such a rich and raw story of a young woman with parents from Ghana living in the UK。 She has so many challenges and personally growth throughout the book。 I loved her inner dialogue and cultural perspective。

you know, i really enjoyed this book until it became all about sex and romance。 the nonsense with the bisexual love interest was literally so disturbing to me。 you’re telling me maddie went to college and doesn’t know anything about queer people? her friend is a lesbian and maddie is just totally ignorant of the lgbtqia+ community? honestly making alex so interested in sex felt like a slap in the face to those of us who are actually queer。

I enjoyed this debut novel 。。。 but it went off the rails about 3/4 in with an unnecessary male relationship (Alex)。 Fortunately, the author circled back to Maddie's family dynamics。 Also included are some themes about depression and racism/stereotypes in dating and the workplace。 I enjoyed this debut novel 。。。 but it went off the rails about 3/4 in with an unnecessary male relationship (Alex)。 Fortunately, the author circled back to Maddie's family dynamics。 Also included are some themes about depression and racism/stereotypes in dating and the workplace。 。。。more

4。5 stars Absolutely loved this coming-of-age story that so beautifully captures what it means to be the daughter of immigrants, the complex love we have for our parents, and how it feels to be a late bloomer。 I related so deeply to Maddie and it was such a joy to root for her!

This is such a tender, touching story about a girl given the responsibilities of a woman and taking on life challenges as she deals with mental health issues。 As the main caregiver for her ailing father, she deals with the workplace, friends, relationships, guilt, grief, an overbearing mother, and learning to be who she is meant to be。 The growth Maddie shows throughout inspires hope and healing。 As my own father passed away last Spring, this book cut me to the core。

There were parts of this book I greatly enjoyed - especially the immigrant aspect and when Madi is expected to speak a language she hardly knows at an event。 Those parts were few and the family dynamic made me sad。 I was not overly enjoying how she handled her freedom with roomates and dating, but was happy to see her finally become herself。How did this book find me? It was Jenna Bush Hager's selection for her book club in February 2023 for the Today Show。 There were parts of this book I greatly enjoyed - especially the immigrant aspect and when Madi is expected to speak a language she hardly knows at an event。 Those parts were few and the family dynamic made me sad。 I was not overly enjoying how she handled her freedom with roomates and dating, but was happy to see her finally become herself。How did this book find me? I really liked this book, its coming-of-age story, and its depictions of family and its loving complications, but am knocking off a star because Maddie's naivete at certain times was just too unbelievable。 Did we really need ALL those Google searches, let alone their results? I do enough of that on my own, I don't need to read a fictional character's。 I really liked this book, its coming-of-age story, and its depictions of family and its loving complications, but am knocking off a star because Maddie's naivete at certain times was just too unbelievable。 Did we really need ALL those Google searches, let alone their results? All the stars。 Maame was not an easy read - it had many hard topics throughout - but it was enjoyable in its own way。 I didn't want the story to end。 I felt like there were similar themes and characters to Queenie, Yinka Where's Your Husband and even Black Cake with the familial relationships。 But this book is different and wonderful in its own way。 Most likely in my top 10 of 2023。 Audiobook 🔊 All the stars。 Maame was not an easy read - it had many hard topics throughout - but it was enjoyable in its own way。 I didn't want the story to end。 I felt like there were similar themes and characters to Queenie, Yinka Where's Your Husband and even Black Cake with the familial relationships。 But this book is different and wonderful in its own way。 Most likely in my top 10 of 2023。 Audiobook 🔊 。。。more

Maddie is 25 and living in London。 The child of Ghanaian immigrants, she has been thrust into the role of primary caregiver from a young age。 Maddie's father is suffering from late-stage Parkinson's, and she lives in his home as his caretaker。 Her mother spends most of her time in Ghana, and her younger brother is off doing his own thing。The book is told from Maddie's perspective, and it is an engaging and charming one。 The writing flowed wonderfully, and kept me smoothly moving through this sto Maddie is 25 and living in London。 The child of Ghanaian immigrants, she has been thrust into the role of primary caregiver from a young age。 Maddie's father is suffering from late-stage Parkinson's, and she lives in his home as his caretaker。 Her mother spends most of her time in Ghana, and her younger brother is off doing his own thing。The book is told from Maddie's perspective, and it is an engaging and charming one。 The writing flowed wonderfully, and kept me smoothly moving through this story of a woman learning to stand up for herself and grow into her role as an adult。 It delved into some deep topics but balanced them with humor and hope。 The audiobook was beautifully narrated, and I enjoyed hearing the Twi accents of Maddie's family members。 。。。more

very real and raw with heartbreaking moments but also a mix of humor because that's just how life is sometimes。 also, really loved reading the acknowledgments。 I could really tell George puts her whole heart and soul into this book。 Also, very refreshing to read about a 25-year-old going through these things rather than a teenager or someone in their 30s。 It was nice to be able to connect with the character that way。 very real and raw with heartbreaking moments but also a mix of humor because that's just how life is sometimes。 also, really loved reading the acknowledgments。 I could really tell George puts her whole heart and soul into this book。 Also, very refreshing to read about a 25-year-old going through these things rather than a teenager or someone in their 30s。 It was nice to be able to connect with the character that way。 。。。more

This was always going to be a bit of a tough sell for me because bildungsromans irritate me pretty quickly (lol), but Maddie won me over as a protagonist。 She's impossible not to like, as well as to relate to。 Despite having entirely different lives, I related to a lot of things about her at that age。 She's someone you want to give a hug, be friends with, and ultimately cheer for。 George's writing of her is what carried this entire novel。 "Maame" is very of its time and manages to capture some o This was always going to be a bit of a tough sell for me because bildungsromans irritate me pretty quickly (lol), but Maddie won me over as a protagonist。 She's impossible not to like, as well as to relate to。 Despite having entirely different lives, I related to a lot of things about her at that age。 She's someone you want to give a hug, be friends with, and ultimately cheer for。 George's writing of her is what carried this entire novel。 "Maame" is very of its time and manages to capture some of the really relatable and frustrating things about 21st century life。 It also does a great job at pulling at the heartstrings and giving some real emotional depth。 There were some elements of the book I found vaguely unrealistic/too predictable - (view spoiler)[I felt the "hooking up with the perfect guy Sam and starting to finally love sex" thing as well as the "I asked my white boss who stole my ideas for more responsibility and she promoted me" thing (hide spoiler)] required a bit of a suspension of disbelief - but not enough to truly bother me/take away from my overall satisfaction with the novel。 As a reader, this one left me feeling really full, which is a lovely feeling。 。。。more

So many reasons to love this book which gets so much about what being in one’s 20s is like - trying to sort an identity out of a tangle of circumstances。 It reminded me very much of Writers and Lovers。 Maddie/Maame is struggling with relationships, family, jobs, desires, friends。 And through it all runs her depression。 Yet she’s bright and funny too。 You want her to succeed despite the ways she holds herself back, then stumbles forward。

Robyn Lawson

A clever expression of growing into your authentic self while facing adversity, racism, generational family challenges, and just generally doing your best as a human trying to enjoy your life。
