Summary

From highly acclaimed bestselling author Ava Reid comes a gothic horror retelling of The Juniper Tree, set in another time and place within the world of The Wolf and the Woodsman, where a young witch seeks to discover her identity and escape the domination of her wizard father, perfect for fans of Shirley Jackson and Catherynne M。 Valente。

A gruesome curse。 A city in upheaval。 A monster with unquenchable appetites。

Marlinchen and her two sisters live with their wizard father in a city shifting from magic to industry。 As Oblya’s last true witches, she and her sisters are little more than a tourist trap as they treat their clients with archaic remedies and beguile them with nostalgic charm。 Marlinchen spends her days divining secrets in exchange for rubles and trying to placate her tyrannical, xenophobic father, who keeps his daughters sequestered from the outside world。 But at night, Marlinchen and her sisters sneak out to enjoy the city’s amenities and revel in its thrills, particularly the recently established ballet theater, where Marlinchen meets a dancer who quickly captures her heart。

As Marlinchen’s late-night trysts grow more fervent and frequent, so does the threat of her father’s rage and magic。 And while Oblya flourishes with culture and bustles with enterprise, a monster lurks in its midst, borne of intolerance and resentment and suffused with old-world power。 Caught between history and progress and blood and desire, Marlinchen must draw upon her own magic to keep her city safe and find her place within it。

4。5 stars。 Gothic and deceptively beautiful, Juniper & Thorn is a fantasy horror that reminded me of my favorite books while being like nothing I’ve ever read before。 The (historical) fantasy was delightful and the horror was…well, I went in knowing one spoiler, but that didn’t prepare me for the rest!

This was a book written by an abuse survivor for other abuse survivors。 Dark, haunting, and visceral。Be sure to look up content warnings beforehand if you check it out。

I was absolutely enthralled all throughout this book。 It is one of the most atmospheric books I have read in a very long time。 Ava Reid's prose is absolutely enchanting。 I was not familiar with the Juniper Tree tale until I read this book but that did not take away from my enjoyment at all。 All the character were fleshed out, even the more minor ones。 For such a dark story it felt weirdly lively。 I am absolutely obsessed with it。 I definitely wanna pick up Reid's other book right away as well。 I was absolutely enthralled all throughout this book。 It is one of the most atmospheric books I have read in a very long time。 Ava Reid's prose is absolutely enchanting。 I was not familiar with the Juniper Tree tale until I read this book but that did not take away from my enjoyment at all。 All the character were fleshed out, even the more minor ones。 For such a dark story it felt weirdly lively。 I am absolutely obsessed with it。 I definitely wanna pick up Reid's other book right away as well。 。。。more

This isn't for the faint of heart, as it tackles the effects of abuse and trauma with unflinching steadiness。 It's haunting, it's lyrical, it's downright gross and visceral, but it's also an ode to the power of stories, both good and bad。 CW: on-page sexual assault/rape, incest, mentions of pedophilia + childhood sexual abuse, antisemitism, xenophobia, eugenics, misogyny, bulimia, body image issues, murder, cannibalism, grief, parental abuse, blood, gore, brief explicit sexual content, animal de This isn't for the faint of heart, as it tackles the effects of abuse and trauma with unflinching steadiness。 It's haunting, it's lyrical, it's downright gross and visceral, but it's also an ode to the power of stories, both good and bad。 CW: on-page sexual assault/rape, incest, mentions of pedophilia + childhood sexual abuse, antisemitism, xenophobia, eugenics, misogyny, bulimia, body image issues, murder, cannibalism, grief, parental abuse, blood, gore, brief explicit sexual content, animal death 。。。more

1/10The story starts off strong with beautiful descriptions of their garden and house。 That description turns into agressive body horror and trauma。 Characters and plot 👎The lack of moderation and subtlety is what killed it in the end 🤷‍♀️ buuuut maybe I just don’t like books with cannibalism/trauma/over-sexualizationI get a major plot point was lack of satisfaction but the author did too good of a job and left me not feeling satiated with this book。

just as a heads up, i wanted to read this book for the CANNIBALISM, so that's where my view on the book comes from。 i wanted to see some eating。 first paragraph will not contain spoilers, but the rest of the review will, so beware! the book follows Marlinchen, the youngest daughter of the last great wizard of Oblya。 Her life sucks ass cause her xenophobic dad doesn't let her out of the house, her sisters are very mean, and her mental state is not the best。 She then meets Sevas, a dancer that's c just as a heads up, i wanted to read this book for the CANNIBALISM, so that's where my view on the book comes from。 i wanted to see some eating。 first paragraph will not contain spoilers, but the rest of the review will, so beware! the book follows Marlinchen, the youngest daughter of the last great wizard of Oblya。 Her life sucks ass cause her xenophobic dad doesn't let her out of the house, her sisters are very mean, and her mental state is not the best。 She then meets Sevas, a dancer that's come to town to portray a very popular ballet, and she immediately falls in love。 She then has to find ways to escape her house to see Sevas, and find her own freedom。 Okay。。。 it was cool。 The magic is cool, the worldbuilding is really cool (love to see some accurate slavic rep lol) and Marlinchen herself is very likeable as an almost anti hero。 I guess my only qualm with the book would be the writing style, which at times was so flowery i could not stand to see another simile or metaphor。 Yeah, we get it, his hair is black and she is kinda ugly。 Don't get me wrong, i LOVE flowery, detailed paragraphs upon paragraphs of description, but some of the stuff here felt unnecessary, almost like the author wanted to write poetry but this is NOT poetry lol。 So onto my other problem。。。 the ending。 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! As I said before, i wanted to read this book (mainly) for the cannibalism。 I won't lie, I am very interested in the subject being explored in fiction (earthlings did an amazing job here)。 Specifically, I was told Marlinchen partakes in cannibalism as a sort of revenge-fuck-you to her abusers。 Which sounds very cool! The book, of course, does not deliver this。 Instead, it is her abuser father who partakes in the cannibalism willingly, and her who kinda does, unknowingly。 Her father (makes Marlinchen kill some people cause he's hungry) and he makes vareniky filling, which then is eaten by Marlinchen and her family, and the men living there。 Another instance of cannibalism would be when they eat her mother, but I don't count that cause she's a BIRD。 My point is, we spend the whole book reading about Marlinchen being hungry, and comparing her hunger to that of her father's, and being hungry when her other abuser is near, and biting on Sevas's fingers, and saying she wants to swallow him whole to then。。。。not have her。。。。eat anyone??! I thought she would at least eat Sevas。 When I was promised an unhinged girlie, I expected an UNHINGED girlie, a girlie who eats her loved ones as a metaphor of her trauma (since the author likes metaphors so much)。 The "good for her" moment is soooo underwhelming。 I read the latter half of the book in one sitting cause I was so desperate for some eating。 I grew attached to Marlinchen cause she is likeable and very flawed, and I like that。 I understood her feelings and the reasoning behind her actions, and I wanted to see her take revenge on the ones who wronged her, and see how revenge isn't the ultimate ending, and it hurting other ones who she loved。 Instead, we get that she had been poisoned to kill the people (she didn't even want to do that and was horrified to find out), and her abusers being killed by outside forces。 LOL。 That was not a good for her moment, that was lame as fuck。 And then she gets a happy ending living with Sevas by the coast。 LOLX2。 Sooooorry to be the crazy bitch who wanted her to eat everyone and live with the horror she had become。 Sorry to actually want a gothic horror。 So yeah the ending sucked for me, sorry。 And the way Undine was killed, alongside her last moments, SUCKED AS WELL。 Like I understand the intention, but I think the writing did not deliver。 Anyway I was kinda pissed off when I finished it, but I had a good time reading, so it wasn't all that bad。 I'm giving it four stars cause the author KNOWS what she's doing, and there are some really strong and powerful moments about trauma and grief, and how a family processes that。 I did like it! It was just the ending, and the LACK of girlie cannibalism that turned me off。 But obviously I can't entirely bash it, cause Ava Reid is delivering for the weird girls of this world。 Outside its flaws, this book is perfect for me。 I will definitely be reading her other novel, and the ones she will be releasing。 。。。more

(4。5)Okay for like half of this book I felt like I was in a fever dream but I still liked it and would recommend but please proceed with caution。 I loved the horror aspect the most, and Marlinchen was such an interesting main character by herself。 Reid's writing was just keeping me hooked, and I cannot wait to read more of their works。 (4。5)Okay for like half of this book I felt like I was in a fever dream but I still liked it and would recommend but please proceed with caution。 I loved the horror aspect the most, and Marlinchen was such an interesting main character by herself。 Reid's writing was just keeping me hooked, and I cannot wait to read more of their works。 。。。more

There are others who will like this book more than I did, and those who will like it less。 It was well written and is probably a 5 star book in terms of quality of writing。 The story was well-constructed and the characters felt rich and well-motivated。 I truly, truly disliked some of the characters including her sisters and her father but really, really liked some of the others, like the golden ballerina love interest! I liked the magic of the book, and I am a sucker for bird metaphors。 Marlench There are others who will like this book more than I did, and those who will like it less。 It was well written and is probably a 5 star book in terms of quality of writing。 The story was well-constructed and the characters felt rich and well-motivated。 I truly, truly disliked some of the characters including her sisters and her father but really, really liked some of the others, like the golden ballerina love interest! I liked the magic of the book, and I am a sucker for bird metaphors。 Marlenchen is a homely girl with an unappealing face, unruly long hair, and useless magic stuck in a house full of awful people。 She sneaks out with her sisters to see the ballet and instantly falls into infatuation with the principle dancer who plays the hero from her mother's childhood bedtime stories, though he is very different from this hero in real life。 Watching her try to escape from her imprisonment and become her own woman, free from those who bring her harm was empowering。This is probably the first book I've ever read where a girl is "ugly" and bullied by those around her and I've actually believed it。 I read a lot of "Katnisses" where the traditionally good looking girl is just "not like other girls" and still has all the men chasing her, and is still spunky with main character energy。 Marlenchen is not like that。 She is introverted and abused。 She is afraid of and distrusting of people。 She hurts herself because the world around her has her convinced she deserves it。 My heart bleeds for this girl。This was a very dark fairy tale and in that same vein, this was a very dark retelling。 This book honestly should've come with a trigger warning。 There is emotional, physical, and sexual assault, violent images, cannibalism, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, etc really everything。 This is a very mentally-ill girl just trying to hold it together after a very hard life and there were parts where it was very hard to sit through her experiences。 Perhaps a lot of readers will see themselves in Marlenchen, and the reality of that brings me great sadness。 But every girl deserves to be the main character and get her own happy ending。3。5 stars。 I won't say I liked it A LOT because honestly it made me so sad, but the writing was really very good and the storytelling quite immersive。 Round up to 4。 。。。more

So this story follows Marlinchen, the third daughter of the (abusive and controlling) last wizard of Oblya。 She and her sisters practice their magic to support their father, who is cursed to never be satisfied with anything。 She and her sisters sneak out occasionally, and during their escapades they visit the ballet and Marlinchen meets a dancer and falls in love。 I really liked the story of this one, and I think it had a lot to say about abuse and how different people turn ugly and destructive So this story follows Marlinchen, the third daughter of the (abusive and controlling) last wizard of Oblya。 She and her sisters practice their magic to support their father, who is cursed to never be satisfied with anything。 She and her sisters sneak out occasionally, and during their escapades they visit the ballet and Marlinchen meets a dancer and falls in love。 I really liked the story of this one, and I think it had a lot to say about abuse and how different people turn ugly and destructive in response to their trauma。 I do have a few quibbles, and they have to do with the world building and the ending。 First, the world is clearly based on our own, with Oblya being either a Russian or Eastern European city in the midst of their industrial revolution。 Marlinchen's father doesn't like how his magic is becoming irrelevant in the face of new technology and science, and so becomes racist and xenophobic to those newcomers to the city。 The way he speaks of different populations makes it clear who these folks are meant to be, but we don't see much of the city and aren't told about the world as it stands or how it was, or even who populates it。 The world building is vague as best is what I'm saying。I also had issues with the ending。 (view spoiler)[ Marclinchen is the monster killing people in the city, and her father is turning her to lash out at his perceived enemies。 While this is foreshadowed, not enough emphasis is put on the murders in the first place - I considered them background noise until they're brought up at the end! (hide spoiler)] Overall, this is fine, but I thought it could use a few more pages to let everything breathe。 。。。more

There’s not much I can say about this story without it becoming a spoiler, but I will say this: it’s a curious tale, one worth reading if you’re a fan of fairy tales and fantasy。 I’m not sure how I feel about how the conflicts and tensions within the story are resolved, but I do appreciate that I had no idea how this would end as I read it。

Dark, disturbing, and ravishing。 The rich descriptive language added to the horror of this fairy tale。 I was transcended into Oblya and its terrors through the eyes of Marlinchen and her family。 The pace kept me hooked, the story telling was addicting and at times unsettling。 It was exactly what I was looking for when I picked up this book。 Highly recommend if you’re looking for something unique and addicting。

This book was devastating to read。 I wouldn't read if you are faint of heart as there is a lot of dark and violent imagery。 I thought that the father's curse was such a brilliant metaphor for the mind set of an abuser and how they dole out their abuse。 The characters were so well written and believable, even the shitty ones。 My only reason for giving this 4 stars is that there wasn't much of a plot, as this was a character driven story。 It seemed more that events happened and were kind of strung This book was devastating to read。 I wouldn't read if you are faint of heart as there is a lot of dark and violent imagery。 I thought that the father's curse was such a brilliant metaphor for the mind set of an abuser and how they dole out their abuse。 The characters were so well written and believable, even the shitty ones。 My only reason for giving this 4 stars is that there wasn't much of a plot, as this was a character driven story。 It seemed more that events happened and were kind of strung together。 However the characters did go through a complete arc which definitely makes the book compelling and worth reading。 。。。more

What are you doing with your time? Why don't you tell authors that books need PLOT and not just a PREMISE that keeps reiterating itself for 300 pages?Marlinchen is dumb。 Sorry but she is。 Everyone keeps telling us she's kind-hearted (she tells us this about herself more than anyone else says it) but she's not。 I can't really think of a single kind thing she says or does or even THINKS throughout the entire book。 She's just meek。 And, like I said, quite stupid。 Yeah she's supposed to be naive and sheltered because her dad isolates her from the world but that doesn't account for her behaving like a thirteen-year-old (at the oldest) when she's supposed to be twenty-three。 People still come to their house; it's not like she has NO contact with the outside world。 Sevas comes across as a predator for sexually advancing on her, even though they're like the same age。I wish there was a band that did country ballads with fantasy lyrics, a Patsy Cline for Middle Earth。 This book would be better as a concept album from such a musical group, with track titles like "Mama Was a Songbird, Papa Was a Wizard Man"。 。。。more

Slavic folk tales, fairy tales , and legends are all on a different level of screwed up。 This story is no different。 A wizard and his children try to live in Modern times, while a city grows up around them, and the cruelty that is spread across this story is a bit surprising。 Be prepared for a splash of old time anti-Semitism as well。 Just a heads up。

Why did she need to keep insisting that their father wanted to put his ‘seed’ in his daughters? There were definitely themes of emotional incest, neglect and abuse, but it almost seemed like the author wanted people to be scared of the possibility of physical incest。 If I were to rate the book based on the last five chapters, I would give it four stars。 However, it lost a star due to the first two thirds of the book being fairly slow, and the interesting aspects being kept to a minimum。 I will say, though, that the character development was done incredibly well。 It did have potential and promise, but too much of it relied on the reader’s take from the book and the afterthought。 Despite this, I don’t think I’ll be reading anything else from this author。 。。。more
