This was very slow going and the first half of the book really dragged on for me。 It suddenly ramped up and I raced to the end。 It was a very dark read in places which fit with the setting。 Parts of the story were very unrealistic but again fit the setting。 Anyone who likes a slow and steady dark read will really enjoy this book but I prefer something more fast paced from the start。Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in return for an honest and unbiased opinion。

The Institution by Helen Fields is a crime thriller of immense emotional intensity with many other facets woven into the narrative。 Horrific in places, nail-biting in others, always being totally unpredictable。It was nice to have a Cluedo-style detailed map of the institution and the surrounding area, so kudos to the author for adding that little extra。 After being a massive fan of 12 Monkeys and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and reading many true accounts of the goings-on inside high-security jails for the criminally insane, I was looking forward to this novel。 I mention 12 Monkeys because, as with Jeffrey Goines, not all those in the asylums are uneducated or lack intelligence。 In fact, some of the more ruthlessly efficient criminals can have high IQs, as Connie is about to find out。I was a little blindsided by the sheer horror and nature of the situation the main protagonists found themselves in。 The longer the narrative progressed, the stronger the tension and suspense intensified。Trying to delve into the mentality of patients whose crimes lacked any viable distinct rhyme or reason caused Connie unbelievable trauma and frustration, and you can understand why。 Living in close proximity to people whose medication was the only thing keeping them stupefied and insensible must have been intense。I was a little worried at one point during the questioning, there being pencils on the desk; have they not seen John Wick。 Perhaps the pencils being on the smaller side allayed any significant threat。 Also, the fact that it is not just the inmates that cannot be trusted did throw the cat amongst the pigeons。There were many characters to get to grips with, and none I would say were particularly likeable, including the main protagonist。 I didn't like Connie much as she came across as erratic and not as level-headed as I would have expected someone of her rank to be。 This was probably my problem and not the fault of the characters, and other readers will love her idiosyncratic behaviour。 The Institution by Helen Fields is a well-written, dark and disturbing story and no mistake。 The atmospheric and claustrophobic vibes are incredibly alarming and spine-tingling stunning。 The finale was inevitable, but the suspense and tension leading up to it were first-rate。Definitely worth a read, but treated with a touch of caution due to content。 。。。more

Holy flying fudge-balls! WOW!Helen Fields always manages to shake me right to the core。 She is also an author who isn’t afraid to tackle the truly gruesome side of crime fiction, to lead readers into places so dark you’re almost left to wonder if there is a way back。 But somehow, ‘The Institution‘ is even darker than her previous books。 I don’t know what it says about me that I loved every minute of it。 Possibly also food for psychologists。First things first。 You may remember Dr Connie Woolwine Holy flying fudge-balls! WOW!Helen Fields always manages to shake me right to the core。 She is also an author who isn’t afraid to tackle the truly gruesome side of crime fiction, to lead readers into places so dark you’re almost left to wonder if there is a way back。 But somehow, ‘The Institution‘ is even darker than her previous books。 I don’t know what it says about me that I loved every minute of it。 Possibly also food for psychologists。First things first。 You may remember Dr Connie Woolwine from ‘The Shadow Man‘。 If you haven’t yet read that one, honestly, shame on you but it’s not necessary to be able to keep up with ‘The Institution‘ as it reads just fine as a stand-alone。 Connie is a forensic profiler, renowned for her ability to get inside the mind of murderers。 This time, she must go deep undercover in an institution full of deranged and dangerous men to find one depraved enough to kill a pregnant nurse and kidnap her baby。 There isn’t much time。The evil in this story … gah! It often made my skin crawl something bad。 ‘The Institution‘ is probably not quite for the faint-hearted amongst us。 There were times where I thought I’d need to take a break, go for a walk, get some fresh air and try to get rid of all this vile brutality in my head。 But another part of me, the immersed and enthralled part, wanted to keep going, to hold on to the feelings and the tension that were building up。The institution has an effect on Connie too。 Not just due to the residents on the ward, but due to other events you’ll have to read about yourself。 What that meant was that I got to know Connie a bit better, but I also wasn’t always entirely sure if her opinion could be trusted。 Was she reliable? Was the pressure of finding this baby getting to her? When a storm hits, I felt just as isolated as everyone else。 It was so easy to imagine how frightening that scenario could be。 Secure facility or not, someone still managed to make a baby disappear。 It didn’t even bother me that the whole storm thing has been done a multitude of times before。 Sometime a locked room thriller just works, other times it doesn’t。 But here, everything just fitted together perfectly。 The masterfully put together plot, the incredibly intriguing characters, the spot-on pace and knowing that the clock was mercilessly ticking in the background all made this one of the most compelling books I’ve read。Every time I thought I knew who was behind this ghastly murder, something would make me change my mind。 Just like Connie, the reader gets background information about the killers on this ward。 It allows us to try our hand at Psychology 101, see if we can figure out who could have been capable of killing this nurse and taking her baby。 And boy, there was clearly no holding back from the author here either。 Aside from the chilling accounts leaving me desperate for something fluffy to cuddle, the psychological insight into these minds was both equally harrowing and fascinating。I’ve been a long time fan of Helen Fields and have loved all her crime fiction books。 However, ‘The Institution‘, in my most humble opinion, just has that little bit extra that makes me want to say it’s her best book yet。 Days later, I find I still think of what drives people to act out in the most despicable ways。 ‘The Institution” is thought-provoking, sometimes emotional to the point of me having a lump in my throat, definitely disturbing and absolutely stupendously brilliant。 Recommended! 。。。more

Dr Connie Woolwine, forensic profiler, is flown into the Institution。 Her mission to discover who, within a high profile secure institution - and specifically who in Tower 3, the most secure part of the Institution, the home of a small number of serial killers - has carried out a forced caesarean, removed a nurse's baby and attempted to get rid of that nurse's body。 It all sounds, and initially felt a bit far-fetched。 As the story developed, the possibility that such a thing could indeed have ha Dr Connie Woolwine, forensic profiler, is flown into the Institution。 Her mission to discover who, within a high profile secure institution - and specifically who in Tower 3, the most secure part of the Institution, the home of a small number of serial killers - has carried out a forced caesarean, removed a nurse's baby and attempted to get rid of that nurse's body。 It all sounds, and initially felt a bit far-fetched。 As the story developed, the possibility that such a thing could indeed have happened becomes more believable as it becomes increasingly clear that the staff at The Institution are from likeable people。 This was a book that kept me gripped, I wanted to know what had happened。 At times though the book just felt like it was veering too far towards the unbelievable as the profiler herself and the Institution's very structure became increasingly unstable and she was threatened with ECT。 For these reasons I have given it 4 stars rather than a 5。 。。。more

Another fantastic book by Helen Fields。 It was very descriptive which I loved。 I felt every clang of the doors shutting and the coldness of the cells。 I loved Connie and the way she was portrayed with her PTSD, this seemed to have a lot of research and I felt it to be very accurate。 I enjoyed the storyline and the pace of the book。 Some of the characters were quite creepy too, that mixed in with the atmosphere of the book made for a very good read。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an Another fantastic book by Helen Fields。 It was very descriptive which I loved。 I felt every clang of the doors shutting and the coldness of the cells。 I loved Connie and the way she was portrayed with her PTSD, this seemed to have a lot of research and I felt it to be very accurate。 I enjoyed the storyline and the pace of the book。 Some of the characters were quite creepy too, that mixed in with the atmosphere of the book made for a very good read。 Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

As if the Cubans would facilitate the arrival and intervention of a foreign investigator, and an American at that! AND Connie's reaction to the request in view of her personal life at that moment?! I thought the ending would have been better without this added wrinkle。Thanks to Avon Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion。 。。。more

I liked how the author incorporated the backstories of the inmates。 Their stories were chilling, but they also give you an insight into the minds of the disturbed individuals。The institute is a hell of a page turner that builds to a heart stopping finale。 Deliciously dark, disturbing, unpredictable and packed to the brim with tension, it’s a MUST read for crime thriller lovers。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

It wouldn't be fair to rate this one as I decided it wasn't for me。 I didn't vibe with the writing style and found the gory scenes unnecessarily graphic。 I didn't get past the first couple of chapters so I won't review it other than to say it wasn't my kind of book。Thank you to NetGalley and to the publishers for granting me a free ARC copy of this novel。 It wouldn't be fair to rate this one as I decided it wasn't for me。 I didn't vibe with the writing style and found the gory scenes unnecessarily graphic。 I didn't get past the first couple of chapters so I won't review it other than to say it wasn't my kind of book。Thank you to NetGalley and to the publishers for granting me a free ARC copy of this novel。 。。。more

The Institution by Helen Fields is another stunning novel of psychological suspense from this accomplished writer。 From the dramatic opening scene involving a corpse with gruesome injuries to the shocking conclusion, I was gripped by this story and immersed in the atmospheric setting of a remote high-security hospital for the criminally insane。Dr。 Connie Woolwine, a noted forensic psychologist, is called to The Institution where the corpse was found, and has 5 days to find a stolen newborn befor The Institution by Helen Fields is another stunning novel of psychological suspense from this accomplished writer。 From the dramatic opening scene involving a corpse with gruesome injuries to the shocking conclusion, I was gripped by this story and immersed in the atmospheric setting of a remote high-security hospital for the criminally insane。Dr。 Connie Woolwine, a noted forensic psychologist, is called to The Institution where the corpse was found, and has 5 days to find a stolen newborn before it perishes。 She and her trusted investigator Brodie Baarda infiltrate the staff and inmate populations, putting themselves at great risk, as they probe the dark minds and behaviors of the residents of Tower 2。The plotting is superb, with realistic interactions and creative twists。 The hospital’s characters felt real, if generally unlikeable, including The Institution itself, which is a sinister shadow ominously hanging over all the action and serving as a perfectly grim atmospheric setting。The writing is skillful, nuanced, and at times, achingly eloquent。 I particularly liked the emotional interchange near the conclusion in which Dr。 Connie consoles a character, explaining, in beautiful prose, the incomparable connection, on a cellular level, that mothers have for their offspring。 Touching and insightful, it is a great example of this author’s intelligent, incisive looks into the human soul。Read this if you enjoy dark thrillers with plenty of action and edge-of-your-seat suspense, as well as deep dives into the psychology of criminals and law enforcement profilers。I cannot wait for the next entry in this series, as at the end, Dr。 Connie is called to a case in Cuba…。 Thank you to Avon/HarperCollins London and NetGalley for the ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

The Institution is a gripping, claustrophobic read which brings a new meaning to the word ‘secure facility – there isn’t anything secure about this locked ward, especially if one of the people within its walls may have killed…The premise is really interesting: forensic profiler Connie is going undercover as a therapist in a high-security hospital for prisoners, to find out what happened to the baby of a nurse there who has been murdered。 Her colleague is also undercover as a prisoner there, rais The Institution is a gripping, claustrophobic read which brings a new meaning to the word ‘secure facility – there isn’t anything secure about this locked ward, especially if one of the people within its walls may have killed…The premise is really interesting: forensic profiler Connie is going undercover as a therapist in a high-security hospital for prisoners, to find out what happened to the baby of a nurse there who has been murdered。 Her colleague is also undercover as a prisoner there, raising the stakes further as Connie feels a sense of responsibility for him and for the baby who is out there somewhere at risk…This book definitely builds a real sense of atmosphere as we spend more time inside the walls of the hospital。 Like Connie, we don’t know who we can trust and the arrival of a storm (which, admittedly, felt like a trope that is often overdone) means it becomes more of a locked-room mystery which rams up the tension。 Apparently, this is actually the second in a series featuring Connie Woolwine, but it can 100% be read as a standalone – I didn’t find I needed any additional background information or context to enjoy the book。 It’s a gripping thriller that I enjoyed, though towards the third quarter of the book I did feel it lost steam a bit and could have been cut down a bit。Overall, The Institution is a solid, compelling read。 It feels quite different from the other books I’ve read so far by Helen Fields。 I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a fast-paced thriller。Many thanks to the publisher who provided a copy of this novel on which I chose to write an honest review。 。。。more

If this book isn’t a smash hit, I’ll claw my own eyes out。 I don’t think I have read a genuinely scary book for such a long time。 Fans of Helen Fields will already be aware of Dr Connie Woolwine and genuinely scary book for such a long time。 Fans of Helen Fields will already be aware of Dr Connie Woolwine and her now partner in crime, Brodie Baarda whom we met in The Shadow Man。Connie is American and a psychological profiler。 Brodie Baarda was a kidnapping specialist from Met Ops Team but is now an independent contractor working with Connie。This time the pair has been called in to deal with an horrific crime (curiously the second such crime I have read this year) which can only have taken place inside the Charles Horatio Parry Institute for the Rehabilitation of the Criminally Insane。This is a high security prison facility that houses some of the country’s most heinous criminals。 These prisoners have been deemed to be psychiatrically unfit to be sent to a normal high security prison and so have been sent to what everyone there refers to as just ‘The Institution’。A nurse from The Institution has been found murdered and her new born baby is missing。 The clock is ticking if the baby is to be found alive but a crypto-currency ransom is being demanded and with the likely perpetrator being inside The Institution, Connie and Baarda go undercover at the behest of the nurse’s family to see if they can unmask the killer and get the baby back unharmed。I said in my review of The Shadow Man that I hoped we would get to learn more of Connie’s back-story and Helen Fields delivers that here。 But, by understanding some of what drives Connie, we find that we are only made more fearful by what she encounters。She and Baarda go in under cover。 Connie is posing as a psychiatric therapist working for the military and her patient is a high security risk prisoner known only as ‘Patient B’ and that’s the role that Baarda is taking on。 Only the Governor knows who Connie and Baarda really are。 The hope is that by working on both the staff and the inmates by taking a dual approach, Connie and Baarda can work out who perpetrated this terrible crime and find a lead to recover the missing baby。The nurse who was murdered worked in Heaven Ward with the deadliest offenders and the highest staff to inmate quotient。 The staff are not overly fond of their guests/clients/patients/prisoners。 A young man called Boy does some of the more menial tasks and he takes to Connie and she to him as he’s the only one there with anything close to a cheery countenance。From the beginning it is anything but plain sailing。 There are some very creepy people in the Institution and that’s just the staff。 The building is a horrible cold stone warren that rises bleak into the sky with different towers like some Castle of Doom。 The surrounding area is all marshland miles from anywhere and the whole place gives off vibes of Frankenstein looked after by Nurse Ratchett。Helen Fields makes The Institution a very scary place to be with simmering tensions abounding even before Connie arrives。 Then she dials that gauge up until it reaches boiling point。 As Connie sets about interviewing the inmates and staff to see how much she can learn by profiling them, it becomes very clear that others are watching her。 Not everyone is without their suspicions about what Connie is really doing there。Baarda too is finding it hard to get traction。 To the staff he’s just another killer and they see no reason not to treat him as they do the others, whatever Connie might say。 Our pair has landed in a pit of loathsome, demented vipers and pretty much everyone has fangs they are keen to use。Helen Fields portrays evil characters really well and honestly, I felt the scariness of The Institution just as I understood how incredibly traumatic it must have been for Connie to find herself in some of the situations that she does。 This is heart in the mouth time and you can hear the screams when things get to that boiling point I mentioned。Add in some very rough weather and a break down in communications, a terrified and traumatised Connie and a Baarda who is elsewhere and you’ll be suspecting everyone – and with good reason。Verdict: Helen Fields has written an absolutely mind-blowing suspense thriller with some great and truly horrible characters, a really twisty and ever changing plotline and a sense that maybe the inmates should be running the asylum。 This is a book that evolves at break-neck speed taking the reader on a spine-chilling journey that will leave you trusting no-one and with your nerves shattered。 As ever with Helen Fields, her characters are well defined and fascinating。 This is one not to miss, but beware of reading with the lights out…。 。。。more

Nurse Tara Cameron didn’t deserve to die。 Thrown down a laundry chute with her baby stolen from her, forensic profiler Dr Connie Woolwine knows that Tara’s parents are relying on her to find their daughter’s murderer and their newborn grandchild。 A ransom demand of 5 million untraceable crypto currency coins to be transferred into a digital wallet has been made for the baby’s location。And so Connie enters the world in which Tara worked。 The Charles Horatio Parry Institution for the Rehabilitatio Nurse Tara Cameron didn’t deserve to die。 Thrown down a laundry chute with her baby stolen from her, forensic profiler Dr Connie Woolwine knows that Tara’s parents are relying on her to find their daughter’s murderer and their newborn grandchild。 A ransom demand of 5 million untraceable crypto currency coins to be transferred into a digital wallet has been made for the baby’s location。And so Connie enters the world in which Tara worked。 The Charles Horatio Parry Institution for the Rehabilitation of the Criminally Insane or The Institution as it’s known。 But, as one staff member tells her, there is little rehabilitation there, instead it’s containment。 It’s housed in an ancient fortress high up in the mountains with breathtaking views but with no obvious escape route for its inhabitants。 They are known to some as patients or guests but none of them are going home any time soon。 Amongst their ranks are prolific serial killers and madmen and there are 5 patients that Connie is particularly interested in。 5 extremely dangerous killers on the locked ward on which Tara worked。 As the rest of the staff and these 5 are told, Connie is there as a specialist therapist to a new patient and has been appointed by the military。 The clock’s already ticking for Connie as she only has 5 days in which to find Tara’s newborn baby, Aurora。 Connie thinks that the baby may have already been taken out of the building and away from it by using the dumb waiter and the videos accompanying the ransom demands show a tiny baby at risk from being removed her mother too soon。However, Patient B is not what he seems and is already known to Connie and she needs all the support that she can get。 She begins to interview the 5 other patients and uses hypnotherapy to unravel their histories and what crimes they have been incarcerated for。 Tara was well liked within the Institution’s community and as far as they know, she had gone on maternity leave early。 But Connie soon senses rivalries between staff members and a general feeling of burn out from some of them。 However, slowly and insidiously the atmosphere of menace and claustrophobia in the Institution begins to weigh heavily on Connie。 When she was younger she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and it has come back to haunt her。 Connie’s cell phone goes missing and then turns up again and she has a sense of an unknown visitor having been in her room。 And then she finds a door at the back of her wardrobe that doesn’t lead to Narnia。 Even more mysteriously, Patient B is given a powerful drug by one of the Institution’s doctors as he was supposed to have become violent。 Connie knows that this is out of character and is worried about the effect that the drug has had on him。 And then a patient on the ward is found dead in his shower and is clutching one of Tara’s missing earrings 。 Is it a clue or a red herring? And then the oncoming storm hits, imprisoning everyone in the Institution for 72 hours and suddenly new alliances are formed with Connie now in great danger。 Someone is determined to stop her finding baby Aurora or being allowed to leave the Institution at all。 This was a cracking book which drew me in right from the first page。 I liked Connie immediately as she treated Tara’s ravaged body with sensitivity and compassion and became determined to find baby Aurora。 She was a woman with her own demons which she acknowledged and she has overcome them。 But I was convinced that she would find the truth about what happened。 The interviews with the 5 patients on the ward was a good way of introducing the reader to their crimes and the reason for their incarceration in such a secure place。 I also got a strong sense of the dullness and frustration of their lives as they were never going to be released。 This was no ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’。Although the creepy building and the oncoming storm are familiar elements, I felt that the author handled them well and emphasised how much the inhabitants were affected by the remote location and the elements。 They had almost been erased from society。 It also created an effective backdrop to the action and I could see how it affected everyone within the building。 I do enjoy reading about creepy old buildings as an ex urban explorer。 There was also a good build up of events as they reached a crescendo and I enjoyed the way that the author skilfully handled the suspense。I had my doubts about one character and was glad to be proved right at the dramatic climax but the unmasking of Tara’s killer was a complete surprise。 It’s always pleasurable to have the rug pulled out from you and red herrings had been so skilfully set。 I really enjoyed this book and intend to explore the author’s other books。 Recommended。 An amended version of this review is
