Summary

Mariel Spark knows not to trust a demon, especially one that wants her soul, but what’s a witch to do when he won’t leave her side—and she kind of doesn’t want him to?

Mariel Spark is prophesied to be the most powerful witch seen in centuries of the famed Spark family, but to the displeasure of her mother, she prefers baking to brewing potions and gardening to casting hexes。 When a spell to summon flour goes very wrong, Mariel finds herself staring down a demon—one she inadvertently summoned for a soul bargain。

Ozroth the Ruthless is a legend among demons。 Powerful and merciless, he drives hard bargains to collect mortal souls。 But his reputation has suffered ever since a bargain went awry—if he can strike a bargain with Mariel, he will earn back his deadly reputation。 Ozroth can’t leave Mariel’s side until they complete a bargain, which she refuses to do (turns out some humans are attached to their souls)。

But the witch is funny。 And curvy。 And disgustingly yet endearingly cheerful。 Becoming awkward roommates quickly escalates when Mariel, terrified to confess the inadvertent summoning to her mother, blurts out that she’s dating Ozroth。 As Ozroth and Mariel struggle with their opposing goals and maintaining a fake relationship, real attraction blooms between them。 But Ozroth has a limited amount of time to strike the deal, and if Mariel gives up her soul, she’ll lose all her emotions—including love—which will only spell disaster for them both。

Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!!This is a grumpy/sunshine romcom with just the right amount of spice。 Mariel is a powerful witch but struggles to harness her powers。 She is amazing with plant magic but is having trouble with all other areas。 When she accidentally summons a demon instead of a bag of flour, she is in for a surprise。 The demon is quite sexy, but unfortunately, he wants to bargain for her soul。 This is a really fun read! 3。75 starsI thought this was going to be a cute romance book but when I saw the phrase 'sensitive horns' I knew EXACTLY where this was going lol。Mariel, a prophesied powerful witch is considered the 'joke' of the family as she's not good at traditional magic - but has a natural aptitude for garden magic。 When practicing her spells, she accidentally summons Oz, the demon with a human soul。 Due to the nature of the soul bargain, Oz has to stay with Mariel until she gives up her soul, so they fake 3。75 starsI thought this was going to be a cute romance book but when I saw the phrase 'sensitive horns' I knew EXACTLY where this was going lol。Mariel, a prophesied powerful witch is considered the 'joke' of the family as she's not good at traditional magic - but has a natural aptitude for garden magic。 When practicing her spells, she accidentally summons Oz, the demon with a human soul。 Due to the nature of the soul bargain, Oz has to stay with Mariel until she gives up her soul, so they fake date while Mariel is trying to figure out what is hurting the forest around the town。I really enjoyed this book! It's a really refreshing romance with loveable characters and an interesting plot。 Mariel's friends were really great characters, so often in contemporary romance the friends suck but these ones were communicative and fiercely in the MC's corner。The concept of a demon getting a human soul and being overwhelmed by all the emotions is just such a cute and funny concept, but I also love he's not given a free pass on his shitty behaviour for being a sensitive boy。 The narrative does a great job of countering problematic behaviour in all the characters in a really satisfying way。My only gripe was that it felt a little cartoonish - some of the dialogue was cringe and the villains especially seemed two dimensional。 The premise was also a little shaky at the beginning, I was a bit confused why he didn't just leave as it's not clear that he actually can't because of the magical bargain, but once that was clear and we got some detailed demon lore I really enjoyed it。Thank you Orion and Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review 。。。more

As far as witchy romance novels go this was a good one。 Mutual attraction, sexual tension, two genuinely good and kind people in need of overcoming personal trauma/issues through the power of love…with magic sprinkles on top。 It was enjoyable。 Like dessert that’s just right。 I did like the additional complication of the demon bargain and I loved how it was resolved as well。Like other witchy romances this is very white, set in America, with witches whose lineage can be traced back to Europe - wit As far as witchy romance novels go this was a good one。 Mutual attraction, sexual tension, two genuinely good and kind people in need of overcoming personal trauma/issues through the power of love…with magic sprinkles on top。 It was enjoyable。 Like dessert that’s just right。 I did like the additional complication of the demon bargain and I loved how it was resolved as well。Like other witchy romances this is very white, set in America, with witches whose lineage can be traced back to Europe - with not a single mention of native Americans or their existence。 In this book the language of magic had some clear linguistic traits of European languages - I recognised Latin, Italian, Finnish, and what I think might have been Dutch - which also begs the question: what of Native American languages and magic? Aren’t ley lines a European invention? What are they doing in the Americas? No mention of pre-existing magical traditions or beliefs or systems? It’s baffling and it’s frankly not a good look。 I would enjoy these romances so much more if there was any acknowledgement at all of native Americans。 I get that many Native American cultures are closed and a non-native not in that culture shouldn’t draw on it, but I have a hard time believing that would extend to in-universe explanations that take that into account。 A line about how these white European (white supremacy?) witches don’t have access to Native American magic but that it nevertheless exists? Would that really he so hard? Ugh。 I don’t know why I keep trying these。Tl;dr: enjoyable romance, too white。Thanks to gollanzc for providing a free ARC through netgalley in exchange for a fair review。 。。。more

This is our first foray into the "witchy romcom" genre, and we think we made a very good choice with our intro, because this was hilarious, funny, and sexy。 Marial is a super powerful witch who happens to be kind of crappy at actually using magic。 One day she uses the wrong word in a spell and accidentally summons a demon。 Ozroth's only job is to make bargains with witches so that he can use their souls to power the demon plane。 Neither one of them is really sure what to do in this situation: he This is our first foray into the "witchy romcom" genre, and we think we made a very good choice with our intro, because this was hilarious, funny, and sexy。 Marial is a super powerful witch who happens to be kind of crappy at actually using magic。 One day she uses the wrong word in a spell and accidentally summons a demon。 Ozroth's only job is to make bargains with witches so that he can use their souls to power the demon plane。 Neither one of them is really sure what to do in this situation: he's magically stuck within a certain perimeter of her presence, but she's not planning on bargaining away her soul, either。 These two dumdums now have to figure out how to get him back to the demon plane while also coming up with a plausible reason why this hot dude with horns is following Marial around。 Totally logical to claim that he's her boyfriend, right? 。。。 right? And although the pace of the events was just right for me, the end felt a bit rushed - how come her family for years and years have mistreated her and seen her as a failure to suddenly change their minds in a week? I would have liked to have seen this in a more phased manner。Regardless, this is a quick and nice witchy romcom book and I recommend it if you want to read a romcom that has a sparkle of magic to it! 。。。more

This was soo good people。 I requested this book on a whim in NetGalley, because, well just look at that title!! This was so cute, funny, smart and literally stirred all the feels for me。 I laughed out loud multiple times and went to tears in a couple of instances, too。 With fake dating and force proximity as main tropes and a few spicy scenes, I recommend this to all my paranormal romance lovers The banter between our main characters is great, and their chemistry is amazing。 Loved to see how the This was soo good people。 I requested this book on a whim in NetGalley, because, well just look at that title!! This was so cute, funny, smart and literally stirred all the feels for me。 I laughed out loud multiple times and went to tears in a couple of instances, too。 With fake dating and force proximity as main tropes and a few spicy scenes, I recommend this to all my paranormal romance lovers The banter between our main characters is great, and their chemistry is amazing。 Loved to see how they fall in love, supporting each other and becoming great friends in addition to lovers。  Our MMC is a demon that, from a bargain gone。。。 in a different way than expected, has gained a soul, and this soul makes him experience feelings as humans do。 It is so fun and interesting seeing Oz experimenting feeling in a way he had never before。 And discovering how sentimental and sincere he is。 Mariel, (who, for some reason I've been struggling to read her name correctly, and I've been calling Mirabel and imaging her as the main character of Disney Encanto 🤣 I have literally been fighting my own mind every time to read her name properly and imagine her as described! I managed by the end) our FMC is a witch very powerful but that struggles to perform most spells。 She is so kind, quirky, and unsure of herself。 Her family is not the most supportive, but despite everything, she is an amazing person and I share her love for nature and plants。 She has a random train of thought that I loved to read, because my mind works the same way。 I would make weird questions in the middle of a conversation that would look random for most people, but they are not for me。 So it wasn't difficult for me to follow her。 It was actually easier and more relatable。 And everything she ask was already going through my mind。 They live in a very magical and quirky town that was very fun to read about and picture in my mind。 There is a great plot about saving the forest and bargains with demons plus, of course, the romance。I don't want to go into more detail because I would end up making spoilers and I don't want that, so I am just gonna say。 You all need to read this。 。 。。。more
