Summary

In a future version of Earth, there is a city grown so chaotically massive that its inhabitants no longer recall what "land" is。 Within this megastructure the silent, stoic Kyrii is on a mission to find the Net Terminal Gene—a genetic mutation that once allowed humans to access the cybernetic NetSphere。 Armed with a powerful Graviton Beam Emitter, Kyrii fends off waves of attacks from fellow humans, cyborgs and silicon-based lifeforms。 Along the way, he encounters a highly-skilled scientist whose body has deteriorated from a lengthy imprisonment who promises to help Kyrii find the Net Terminal Gene, once she settles a score for herself。。。

I understand the plot but not who the characters are。

It's satisfying how you can get through the story (vol 1 at least) with a few lines of dialogue and still be captivated and craving for more of this dark, futuristic, wild, solitary-like world。 It's satisfying how you can get through the story (vol 1 at least) with a few lines of dialogue and still be captivated and craving for more of this dark, futuristic, wild, solitary-like world。 。。。more

One of my most favorite series and a great art and story inspiration。

Made it through on my second try。 I bought this mainly for the art and the setting — a self-replicating city, that is essentially infinite。 A lone stranger wanders through the labyrinth searching for something。 While the environmental/architectural art in this volume is frequently astonishing, the same can’t be said for the storytelling, which is frequently confusing and messy。 I found it difficult to follow the plot during the action sections and harder still to tell one character from the next Made it through on my second try。 I bought this mainly for the art and the setting — a self-replicating city, that is essentially infinite。 A lone stranger wanders through the labyrinth searching for something。 While the environmental/architectural art in this volume is frequently astonishing, the same can’t be said for the storytelling, which is frequently confusing and messy。 I found it difficult to follow the plot during the action sections and harder still to tell one character from the next。That said, I’ll likely give Volume 2 a try at some point, if only because of the compelling atmosphere。 。。。more

As I’m reading the second master volume, I feel like I needed to come back and leave an actual review for this series。 Ever since I saw the Netflix movie, I’ve been enraptured。 I’ve been itching for a new sci fi series to get sucked into。 Boy was I not prepared for how perfectly on point this series is for me。 The Netflix movie doesn’t even scratch the surface of this series。 It is an actual arc that is in the series, so I’m glad it wasn’t too off from the original material。 My first reaction wh As I’m reading the second master volume, I feel like I needed to come back and leave an actual review for this series。 Ever since I saw the Netflix movie, I’ve been enraptured。 I’ve been itching for a new sci fi series to get sucked into。 Boy was I not prepared for how perfectly on point this series is for me。 The Netflix movie doesn’t even scratch the surface of this series。 It is an actual arc that is in the series, so I’m glad it wasn’t too off from the original material。 My first reaction when I started this series about a year ago, but never really continued, was “this looks rough。” At first you think it’s the artist skill level, but we quickly learn it’s on purpose。 The world and every character design gives us a constant feeling of contrast。 How alien every thing in manga is to each other, but also to the reader。 A wild start to this dark cyberpunk dystopian series。 I’m glad people are becoming more aware of this series。 A new classic for lovecraftian and H。R。Giger fans。 。。。more

One of my favorite manga, and having it in your hands, able to really inspect the intricate scenes is amazing

I have been eyeing this series for a long time but something about it (uneasiness underlined by gothic lanky characters I guess) was putting me off。Few days back I was reading some other books and came across this volume and said, OK, lets give it a try。I can only say - what a ride。First, this is so dystopian, post-apocalyptic and otherworldly it is unbelievable。 This is time after a great collapse of humanity, nobody remembers how long and why。 Automated city (akin to Asimov's Robot City), know I have been eyeing this series for a long time but something about it (uneasiness underlined by gothic lanky characters I guess) was putting me off。Few days back I was reading some other books and came across this volume and said, OK, lets give it a try。I can only say - what a ride。First, this is so dystopian, post-apocalyptic and otherworldly it is unbelievable。 This is time after a great collapse of humanity, nobody remembers how long and why。 Automated city (akin to Asimov's Robot City), known just as City, is growing uncontrollably across the surface。 Purpose, reason for grow is a mystery, sheer size and structure and purpose of buildings is unknown。 In these artificial concrete and steel canyons what is left of humanity tries to find meaning and to survive - author manages to present various strains of humanity as they evolve through centuries, from elf like silent nomads to old good humans going crazy in isolation or trying to salvage what they can using technology they only know how to use but not how to maintain or produce。 Then we have Administration - mysterious entity in control of City - then Safeguards, robotic extermination creatures, bizarre blend of technology and biology, aiming to destroy the humanity, and Silicon Life creatures - independent artificial organisms also bent on destroying humanity but also in conflict with City's systems。 And then we have Kyrii, mysterious man who seeks humans that still have so called Net terminal gene, only way that humanity can retake the City。 This puts him in the sights of City security and Silicon Life creatures。Art is very very dark。 I have to admit that in this volume art is relatively simple, especially when it comes to people and creatures, you can just feel how author was more at ease with truly beautiful panoramas of never ending artificial structures and bio-mechanical creatures roaming the area。 When it comes to people, in general art looks very amateurish, very bland and as such is in sharp contrast with wild biotechnology constructs and environment。 We do not know much about Kyrii but after his botched mission at the very beginning he is sent on the long search and there are literary pages after pages of Kyrii just going through tunnels, over unimaginable canyons without saying the word - feeling of loneliness is just palpable。 And when action takes place it is swirl of blades, gunfire and fast reflexes, usually the Kyrii's signature weapon - graviton beam emitter in a form of a pistol - takes the front place in this situations。 You know how in some action movies you see a huge gun fire, but then there is absence of sound and few seconds later everything in front of it goes bye bye? Author manages to do this through images, it is just beautiful - the very firing of weapon looks awe inspiring and terrifying, and when explosion comes up you are very much aware of the sheer destruction caused。Excellent art and very intriguing story。Highly recommended to all fans of SF and cyberpunk。 。。。more

The very definition of picture paints a thousand words。。。it requires some amount of work to understand, world building is explored through myopic perspectives through the eyes of an observer and it's fantastic。It's slightly tedious as much of it action。 The very definition of picture paints a thousand words。。。it requires some amount of work to understand, world building is explored through myopic perspectives through the eyes of an observer and it's fantastic。It's slightly tedious as much of it action。 。。。more

Kyrii is searching for the net terminal gene in a far future techno-dystopia: a multilayered infinite city that goes on forever in all directions, with giant tubes and cables growing everywhere like vains on top of metallic skin。 Blame! is a bleak and violent action-adventure with very little dialogue or exposition。 It's pure visual storytelling and I loved that about it。 You find out bits and pieces about Kyrii and this world as you read on。If Moebius and Q Hayashida had a child, that's what th Kyrii is searching for the net terminal gene in a far future techno-dystopia: a multilayered infinite city that goes on forever in all directions, with giant tubes and cables growing everywhere like vains on top of metallic skin。 Blame! is a bleak and violent action-adventure with very little dialogue or exposition。 It's pure visual storytelling and I loved that about it。 You find out bits and pieces about Kyrii and this world as you read on。If Moebius and Q Hayashida had a child, that's what the art looks like to me。 Nihei's works mostly analogue。 They had a show of his work at the Angouleme Comics Festival a couple of years ago。 Layers of ink and whiteout with rasters, paint and cut out bits on top。 He likes to get his hands dirty。 Great stuff。 。。。more

Nihei is maybe the best guy to ever draw a bunch of weird buildings and structures。 I like how rough his humans look compared to how solid his architectural work is。 I really respect when an artist isn’t particularly great at something but still pushes on and continues to create。

The first thing which struck me about this book is that the paneling, whilst wholly legible, forces the reader to slow down and take in the beautiful art BLAME! has to offer。 The simple and episodic structure of this story is a method of storytelling which I adore。 I look forward to reading the rest of the series。

This book has some great background art, but most of it did not have much in the way of interesting character。 Somewhat gory。 I have the second volume and I think that it will be better than the first。

This review is for the complete series。 So, the question comes down to this, is Nihei a genius or not? Has he got extraordinary vision or is he just scratching about, repeating the same, often incomprehensible story in every series? I'm going to come down on the side of genius, but may change my mind by the time I've finished typing this。 This review is for the complete series。 So, the question comes down to this, is Nihei a genius or not? Interesting science fiction manga it was heavy on the graphic art and low on dialog but I got the point。 A future where we don't even understand what land means and a war between humans and machines or genetically altered human like organisms and giant worms so far it is decent。 Interesting science fiction manga it was heavy on the graphic art and low on dialog but I got the point。 A future where we don't even understand what land means and a war between humans and machines or genetically altered human like organisms and giant worms so far it is decent。 。。。more

I went into this pretty devoid on context and didn’t have the patience to do a deep dive on the Internet as I was reading this。 The art is pretty visually arresting — in my limited experience, I’d compare it favorably to Akira and less interesting than Ghost in the Shell。 The story is non-existent and follows the same conceit as something like Fury Road (“characters are trying to get to point B from A so as to discover whatever Macguffin will bring them a deliverable sense of success”) but where I went into this pretty devoid on context and didn’t have the patience to do a deep dive on the Internet as I was reading this。 The art is pretty visually arresting — in my limited experience, I’d compare it favorably to Akira and less interesting than Ghost in the Shell。 The story is non-existent and follows the same conceit as something like Fury Road (“characters are trying to get to point B from A so as to discover whatever Macguffin will bring them a deliverable sense of success”) but where Fury Road has rich world building, Blame! petted in obscurity。 This isn’t a story about characters, but the world, is that feels deeply unclear…how is anyone genuinely able to pull meaning or enjoyment from this? That it makes me feel and uncertain and uncomfortable much be the point, but I’m not sure that’s even successful since I can’t figure out what any of that is in service to。 。。。more

Interesting world building。 The art fluctuates between vast, intriguing, detailed architecture and confusing, muddy messes。 Action sequences are quite hard to follow。

Minimal dialog made me fly through this and not understand what what going on。 Disgusting creatures, mediocre art, especially faces, and yet at the end of it I wanted to know what happens…
