LOVED issue 50but IDW really loves to rip people off with trades。 4 issues per trade are not a good amount for an ongoing series, and its very noticable when you only get 2 numbered issues, a free comic book day special and a so-so annual

Read via Sonic the Hedgehog (2018) #50-51 (plus #52)I feel this is going to be an awkward trade when collected。 Past volumes have at least had some semblence of a contained story, even during the longer arcs such as the Metal Virus Saga。 This however picks up where volume 12 and Imposter Syndrome left off in the middle of a new quest and since it's only planned to collect the double-length #50 alongside #51 and the 2022 Annual it doesn't finish the storyline presented。 I originally thought this Read via Sonic the Hedgehog (2018) #50-51 (plus #52)I feel this is going to be an awkward trade when collected。 Past volumes have at least had some semblence of a contained story, even during the longer arcs such as the Metal Virus Saga。 This however picks up where volume 12 and Imposter Syndrome left off in the middle of a new quest and since it's only planned to collect the double-length #50 alongside #51 and the 2022 Annual it doesn't finish the storyline presented。 I originally thought this would collect #50-52 but the solicits proved me wrong on that front and #52 seems to be continuing the story here for another trade's-worth。Regardless of all that, the story here is good - it's a good stepping stone to the culmination of Starline's machinations from the past couple of years with lots of solid character drama and fun action sequences。 The art from Adam Bryce Thomas is spectacular as always and while Mauro Fonseca and Rik Mack's takeover during #51 is obvious they're still able to convey a ton of energy into their sequences, which is all you can ask for from a Sonic comic。 The 2022 Annual presented here is a fun collection of short stories too although it's inclusion feels clunky due to the aforementioned lack of complete story from the previous contents。Overall this is not a bad volume if you've been keeping up with the series thus far, and I do feel kinda bad giving it a 3/5。 But whereas the previous trades can be picked up and read without much context, Battle For The Empire very much cannot and it hurts the otherwise excellent storytelling that the IDW Sonic team have been consistently providing。 Hopefully this is a series of issues that can be bettered and fully appreciated with the context of previous and following issues in one of IDW's future hardcover collections。 。。。more
