This was a wonderful and exciting addition to the Pendergast world。 We find our two MCs separated by time, distance and dimensions。 I loved how we Lincoln and Child bring elements that initially seem scattered and separate together like always。 A fun and suspenseful read that only L&C can provide。 Would definitely recommend you add this to your library!

Preston And Child have done ot again, it maybe the 21st book in the series but still as enthralling as the first。 Constance has gone back in time to stop Dr Leng and Pendergast trying to find a way to get her back。 Could not put it down。I received this book from Aria & Aries/Head of Zeus and Netgalley for a review。

So。。。 this isn't a standalone。 I'd read a handful of Pendergast books, but missed quite a few。 Apparently a LOT happened since that handful, because I did not remember some of those characters at all。 That was fine -- I was able to catch up pretty quickly。 It's important to note that this is a "to be continued" ending。 You can't just read this novel on its own without reading the one that's next in line。 For that reason, I'm VERY interested in catching up with this series so I can sink my teeth So。。。 this isn't a standalone。 I'd read a handful of Pendergast books, but missed quite a few。 Apparently a LOT happened since that handful, because I did not remember some of those characters at all。 That was fine -- I was able to catch up pretty quickly。 It's important to note that this is a "to be continued" ending。 You can't just read this novel on its own without reading the one that's next in line。 For that reason, I'm VERY interested in catching up with this series so I can sink my teeth into whatever's next。But just for the sake of fairness, I'm going to try to review just The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng on its own。In this installment, Pendergast is looking a little worse for wear, but he's still his enigmatic, magnetic self。 D'Agosta, as always, is our down-to-earth cop buddy slash stand-in for the reader。 Coldmoon (who I did not know before this book, but feel like I should) is an even more stoic Sherlock who demands justice。 Very much yes for this guy。 Constance is headstrong to a fault, and also on a quest for justice, but she's willing to go to some very extreme, very weird lengths to make it happen。 Time travel, for instance。Explaining the plot on its own will make you sound like a crazy person, but for anyone who enjoys Pendergast -- even a little bit -- this is a real trip。 It's a bestseller already, and rightfully so。 The style is immersive and balances right on the edge of intellectualism and just-go-with-it fantasy。 In short, it is weird, it's scary, it's sci-fi, it's mysterious, it's thriller-y, it's got everything you'd want and expect from Preston and Child。 Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the authors for providing a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

I have been a read of the Pendergast series for what seems like forever。 Like the majority of this series, this was a fast, fun thriller with a science fiction element。 I wouldn't recommend starting with this book; there is just too much backstory in this universe。 The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng involves parallel storylines that eventually intersect。 I enjoyed how each separate plot was developing and working towards one another, but we are left with cliffhangers as to both (one more successfully than I have been a read of the Pendergast series for what seems like forever。 Like the majority of this series, this was a fast, fun thriller with a science fiction element。 I wouldn't recommend starting with this book; there is just too much backstory in this universe。 The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng involves parallel storylines that eventually intersect。 I enjoyed how each separate plot was developing and working towards one another, but we are left with cliffhangers as to both (one more successfully than the other, in my opinion)。 I was frustrated with the nature of the main cliffhanger, but the afterword by the authors acknowledging this gave me some solace。 I can only hope that they will finish the next installment quickly! I was graciously provided an ARC of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 This is more of a 4。5 star read for me, but I rounded down because of the resolution of the secondary plot and the recycling of a plot point that is not a favorite of mine, but which I will leave unstated to avoid spoilers。 。。。more

I just want to start out by admitting something – I’ve never picked up a Pendergast novel until this one。 I had heard Pendergast mentioned here and there but it has mostly (and unfortunately) flown under my radar。 If you are like me, picking up a Pendergast book for the first time, have no fear of being left in the dust。 After a whopping 20 books before this one that’s exactly what I expected – but I didn’t feel lost at all。 Preston & Child truly are really good at their craft – slight backstory I just want to start out by admitting something – I’ve never picked up a Pendergast novel until this one。 I had heard Pendergast mentioned here and there but it has mostly (and unfortunately) flown under my radar。 If you are like me, picking up a Pendergast book for the first time, have no fear of being left in the dust。 After a whopping 20 books before this one that’s exactly what I expected – but I didn’t feel lost at all。 Preston & Child truly are really good at their craft – slight backstory for new readers to grasp relationships but not more than an avid reader of the series would find boring。 It’s going to be really difficult not to go backward & I would like to mention that the first book in the Pendergast series (Relic) is available through Kindle Unlimited as well as the first book that started the Dr。 Leng story arc (The Cabinet of Curiosities)。"It had been a small, simple place。 There were palaces in a book her father had read to them, a book of fairy tales, dirty and coverless but filled with magic。 She remembered every page of that book。"I really did find the characters interesting and the multiple POVs were easily kept track of because all of them had a unique feel and voice。 Really the only thing lacking was my knowledge of them – which, more than likely, wouldn’t be an issue if I had the other 20 books under my belt。 The one thing that did catch me off guard sometimes was the dual time periods。 Usually, something came up that would date them for me but sometimes I would get wrapped up and not pay attention to the chapter designations。"Naturally the guy would roll his own。 Why leave it to someone else when you can tailor bespoke ammo to your own murderous specifications?"Ok – I had to include this quote… the “bespoke ammo” made me giggle。 Hearing about this process from several people I’m close to it sounds like a hobby I wouldn’t want。 There is a LOT that goes into reloading that I didn’t realize and it’s difficult。 I can definitely see why not everyone who shoots reloads。 To those who are passionate, patient, and knowledgeable about this hobby – cheers! There are books that I truly don’t understand their popularity – with the Pendergast series that’s not the case。 I would highly recommend this book to (obviously) lovers of the Pendergast series but also to readers like myself who are just now finding this great series。 A huge thank you to Grand Central Publishing for the opportunity to read this book and dive into this series – you got me hooked。 。。。more

The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child is a highly recommended procedural, and science fiction thriller, and the 21st Aloysius Pendergast novel。 As a long time fan of both Preston and Child, together and separate, I need to forewarn other fans that this novel is TO BE CONTINUED。。。a situation that has left me distressed and a tad bit frantic。The novel follows three different narratives。 First, FBI agent Pendergast is devastated that his ward (and love) Constance Greene has left The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child is a highly recommended procedural, and science fiction thriller, and the 21st Aloysius Pendergast novel。 As a long time fan of both Preston and Child, together and separate, I need to forewarn other fans that this novel is TO BE CONTINUED。。。a situation that has left me distressed and a tad bit frantic。The novel follows three different narratives。 First, FBI agent Pendergast is devastated that his ward (and love) Constance Greene has left him。 Constance has used a time machine to travel back to a parallel universe in New York City in 1880。 She is hoping to right several wrongs, save her siblings, and make the scurrilous Dr。 Leng pay for his devious deeds。 Pendergast plans to go back in time to save her。Then, Special Agent Armstrong Coldmoon who has been working with Pendergast, is sent to investigate a murder on the reservation in South Dakota。 And New York City, Lieutenant Commander Vincent D'Agosta is investigating the unusual murder of the curator of Native American artifacts at New York's Museum of Natural History。 It is soon discovered that Coldmoon's case is related to D'Agosta's case。The pace moves briskly in all the narrative threads and the intrigue just keep building with each new chapter。 The dual timelines and cases are all correspondingly compelling, challenging, and intricate in all theories/investigations/mysteries, enough so that you will be equally interested in all the plot lines。 As the chapters switch between storylines, knowing the other storylines will be updated in subsequent chapters, the new information will be welcomed。As you reach later points in the novel, you will be wondering how in the world case Preston and Child reach a conclusion and tie up all the loose ends。 Then you will find out that the novel is too be continued。 sigh。 The fact is that the wait will be worth it because the narrative threads are already so strong and the action so engrossing that to expand it into another novel to reach a conclusion will only result in a more riveting story and a consummate summation of all the narratives。 Preston and Child are talented enough to pull it all together。At this point all the characters are well-developed because they have been around for years。 They are all complex and fully realized individuals and this novel continues adding depth to the characters。 Coldmoon is a new character, as far as the series goes, but he is also well-written and realistic。Fans of the series are going to jump on this latest novel immediately。 Newcomers could start here, but it would make more sense to read the series in order。 The procedural part of the novel can stand alone as a separate story, but the whole plot involving Constance and Pendergast benefits from the background information。 4。5 rounded upDisclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Grand Central Publishing via NetGalley。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2023/0。。。 。。。more

I am so pleased that this Agent Pendergast novel was more in keeping with Cabinet of Curiosities and Relic and less like the previous two in the series, which fell a bit flat for me。 There's a ton going on in this one, but it never gets confusing。 Love the time travel element and the authors did a great job recreating 1880s NYC。 All of our favorites are together in this one。 Pendergast and Proctor, D'Agosta and Laura, and Agent Coldmoon。 It does end in a cliffhanger, and there's even a note to r I am so pleased that this Agent Pendergast novel was more in keeping with Cabinet of Curiosities and Relic and less like the previous two in the series, which fell a bit flat for me。 There's a ton going on in this one, but it never gets confusing。 Love the time travel element and the authors did a great job recreating 1880s NYC。 All of our favorites are together in this one。 Pendergast and Proctor, D'Agosta and Laura, and Agent Coldmoon。 It does end in a cliffhanger, and there's even a note to readers from the authors explaining the reasons behind this and promising a resolution in their next installment。 Thank you to @libro。fm for the gifted audiobook。 。。。more

This book took a little longer for me to read as I kept on stopping and looking up the locations, objects, history of the 1880's and the information about the Lakota chiefs and artifacts。 I would love to see an illustrated edition with additional information。 It would be so educational! This book took me down the rabbit hole for sure。I received the advanced copy of this book for my review and I'm really thankful for that。 I'm not sure if the actual book that comes out on 1/17/23 will have any changes or not, but I think it would be very helpful to have translations from other languages provided in the book as it's not always possible to pause and look it up。 Thank you, NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing, for allowing me to read this story in advance。 I really could hardly wait! 。。。more

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review。This is the 21st book in the Pendergast series by Preston & Child。 It should not be read as a standalone - at a minimum, you should read The Cabinet of Curiosities and Bloodless first (though, really, the whole series is worth the investment!)。 I loved this book and audibly gasped at the ending。 I don't know how I'm going to wait until the next one comes out (it was a cliffhanger!)。 Constance has taken a time machine back to 1800s NYC (in a para I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review。This is the 21st book in the Pendergast series by Preston & Child。 It should not be read as a standalone - at a minimum, you should read The Cabinet of Curiosities and Bloodless first (though, really, the whole series is worth the investment!)。 I loved this book and audibly gasped at the ending。 I don't know how I'm going to wait until the next one comes out (it was a cliffhanger!)。 Constance has taken a time machine back to 1800s NYC (in a parallel universe) to try to save her sister and herself from Dr。 Leng, and her brother from his death。 Pendergast, understanding Leng's abilities, is desperate to follow and help。 Meanwhile, Coldmoon (and Vinnie!) are working on a case involving theft of Native American artifacts in the present time。 If you're a Pendergast fan, you should enjoy this book。 If it's your first foray into the series, start with an earlier book as mentioned above。 。。。more

The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng’s Pendergast novles began for me by listening to Rene Auberjonois reading audiobooks。 Truthfully, I have READ very few of these wonderful Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child books, merely listened。 This was a departure for me and I’m not sure a good one。 While I love the character and the basic premise, I have always found the books to be somewhat believable, despite the obvious。 This book took a turn and I am no longer able to call it believable, despite it being interesti The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng’s Pendergast novles began for me by listening to Rene Auberjonois reading audiobooks。 Truthfully, I have READ very few of these wonderful Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child books, merely listened。 This was a departure for me and I’m not sure a good one。 While I love the character and the basic premise, I have always found the books to be somewhat believable, despite the obvious。 This book took a turn and I am no longer able to call it believable, despite it being interesting and thrilling。 The characters are excellent: Aloysius Pendergast, Armstrong Coldmoon, and certainly Lt Commander D’Agosta。 The plot reaches, I think。 If that is all there is, end the series。 It did leave on a cliffhanger and I am anxious to see how it finishes, to be fair。 The plot revolves around time travel, and traveling back and forth。 An interesting concept, but one that would seriously hamper the world if it were more than theoretically possible。 In this case, is was to an alternate timeline, so that is somewhat less frightening, I suppose。 It is interesting in a way only Preston and Child can write it。 I certainly do not regret the time spent reading it。 I simply find it even more preposterous than Pendergast novels typically are。 I miss solving the crime, I guess。 I was invited to read The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng by Grand Central Publishing, through Netgalley。 All thoughts and opinions are mine。 #Netgalley #GradnCentralPublishing #DouglasPreston #LincolnChild #TheCabinetOfDrLeng 。。。more

The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng is part of an ongoing series and is best read in sequence as it continues the story。 The fantastical time travel and mystery-solving continue throughout the book。 It is extremely engrossing as the characters are well-developed and vividly portrayed。 Thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC。

I would like to thank Netgalley and Aria & Aries for an advance copy of The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng, the twenty-first novel to feature Special Agent Aloysius X。 L。 Pendergast of the FBI。Pendergast’s ward, Constance Greene, has found a way to travel back to 1880 New York to save her brother and sister from death and to stop serial killer Dr。 Enoch Leng from executing his plans。I have only read a couple of novels in this series and that was several years ago, so I was interested to pursue my acquainta I would like to thank Netgalley and Aria & Aries for an advance copy of The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng, the twenty-first novel to feature Special Agent Aloysius X。 L。 Pendergast of the FBI。Pendergast’s ward, Constance Greene, has found a way to travel back to 1880 New York to save her brother and sister from death and to stop serial killer Dr。 Enoch Leng from executing his plans。I have only read a couple of novels in this series and that was several years ago, so I was interested to pursue my acquaintance with the characters when the opportunity arose。 I knew that I would have to suspend my disbelief and go with the flow, but I didn’t expect it to happen from page one。 It took me a while to get into the book as the first few chapters concern Constance’s adventures in 1880 New York。 I thought that they were overly detailed for relatively little action and difficult to get involved in, so I kept putting it down for other books that offered more immediate gratification。Once, however, it switched to the present day I started to get interested。 Pendergast’s distress at losing Constance (she has no way of coming back) is understandable and his solution daring, if not reckless。 Then Lieutenant Commander Vincent D’Agosta is investigating a murder at the Museum of Natural History when he receives a call from Special Agent Armstrong Coldwater who sees a link to his murder case in South Dakota。 I admit that I feel more comfortable with a tangible murder investigation than the mental gyrations required to understand time travel, parallel universes and how it can be done。 Having said that, Constance’s adventure, which takes up the majority of the novel is a tense affair that becomes compelling as she takes on the (not so) good doctor, while D’Agosta and Coldmoon’s investigation is perfunctory, more a case of keeping up with the characters than a solid contribution to the plot。The authors view this novel as part three of a quartet with the Cabinet of Curiosities and Brimstone as parts one and two and the fourth to follow, although I think most readers would guess that as this instalment ends in a cliffhanger that definitely arouses curiosity。The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng is a work of great imagination with a tense, interesting story to tell after a slow start, there I can recommend it as a good read。 。。。more

I absolutely loved Relic and Reliquary by Preston & Child - the fast paced stories of "The Museum Murders" with their glimpse into NYC's secret history and tunnels, their insights into the ugly side of archaeology and the introduction of Agent Pendergast intrigued my inner Indiana Jones to no end。 For some reason beyond me, I never continued reading the Pendergast series。。。until now。Grand Central Publishing sent me an Advanced Reading Copy of The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng, which happens to be the 21st I absolutely loved Relic and Reliquary by Preston & Child - the fast paced stories of "The Museum Murders" with their glimpse into NYC's secret history and tunnels, their insights into the ugly side of archaeology and the introduction of Agent Pendergast intrigued my inner Indiana Jones to no end。 For some reason beyond me, I never continued reading the Pendergast series。。。until now。Grand Central Publishing sent me an Advanced Reading Copy of The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng, which happens to be the 21st Pendergast novel。 Having missed 18 books in between, I wasn't sure I'd be able to get into the story without context, but the authors did a great job of catching the reader up。 I wouldn't call this a standalone novel, but I was able to dive right into the story。 Pendergast's companion Constance has made her way to Manhattan in the 1880's to rescue her siblings Joe and Mary, along with her younger self, and to kill Pendergast's serial killer ancestor Enoch Leng。 When Pendergast discovers where ahe has gone, he will stop at nothing to bring her home safely。Meanwhile, Pendergast's latest partner, Agent Coldmoon, is given a new assignment investigating a seemingly cut and dry murder on a Lakota reservation。 Pendergast's friend Vinnie D'Agosta on the NYPD is assigned to a bizarre murder of a curator in a freezer at The Museum Of Natural History。 Could there possibly be a connection between these cases?Overall, this was an enjoyable, fast-paced piece of escapism that helped me get through a rough couple of days。 I enjoyed the story, althoughI didn't like the cliffhanger ending。 While waiting for the next installment in the series, I plan to go back and read the other books in between。 Thank you to Grand Central for the opportunity to read this book early! 。。。more

Love this series! In this edition, Preston & Child continue the storyline begun in the previous book Bloodless where Constance Greene makes a risky move to try to change the past。 Now Pendergast is determined to help her and enlists the aid of his long-time friend NYPD Lieutenant Commander Vincent D'Agosta。 Meanwhile FBI Special Agent Armstrong Coldmoon, who has been working with Pendergast for several months, is reassigned to look into a murder case out west。 He's not happy with the easy answer Love this series! Will good triumph over evil? Oh no!!! We must wait to find out!!! I received an arc of this new thriller from the authors and publisher via NetGalley。 It's probably my favorite series of all time so I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity。 My review however is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own。 。。。more

Any book with a green mist floating out through a door is going to attract my attention。 Fortunately, The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng is as good as the cover。 I had not read the Pendergast novels before, but the authors did a good job of cluing me into the characters and background without resorting to an info dump。What we have here is science fiction, mystery, thriller and a character who wears the wrong clothes to the 19th Century。 Okay, so that is not a major plot point, but let is serve as a warning Any book with a green mist floating out through a door is going to attract my attention。 Fortunately, The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng is as good as the cover。 I had not read the Pendergast novels before, but the authors did a good job of cluing me into the characters and background without resorting to an info dump。What we have here is science fiction, mystery, thriller and a character who wears the wrong clothes to the 19th Century。 Okay, so that is not a major plot point, but let is serve as a warning if you plan to time travel。 There are also at least three different stories going on that all come together even though they seem to have nothing to do with each other at first。Alas, the book ends with a cliffhanger。 The authors apologize for it。 It's such a fascinating cliffhanger that it makes me want to read the next edition, which I will because the characters are interesting, and the major characters have depth to them。Before I go to check my closet to see if my wardrobe is appropriate for time travel, I'd like to thank Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for allowing me to read and review The Cabinet of Dr。 Leng。 。。。more
