Summary

It is the year 2051。 Warnings of climate catastrophe have been ignored, and vast areas of the planet are under water, or uninhabitably hot。 A quarter of the world's population has been displaced by hunger and flooding, and immigration wars are breaking out around the globe as refugees pour into neighboring countries。

By contrast, melting ice sheets have brought the Gulf Stream to a halt and northern latitudes, including Scotland, are being hit by snow and ice storms。 It is against this backdrop that Addie, a young meteorologist checking a mountain top weather station, discovers the body of a man entombed in ice。

The dead man is investigative reporter, George Younger, missing for three months after vanishing during what he claimed was a hill-walking holiday。 But Younger was no hill walker, and his discovery on a mountain-top near the Highland village of Kinlochleven, is inexplicable。

Cameron Brodie, a veteran Glasgow detective, volunteers to be flown north to investigate Younger's death, but he has more than a murder enquiry on his agenda。 He has just been given a devastating medical prognosis by his doctor and knows the time has come to face his estranged daughter who has made her home in the remote Highland village。

Arriving during an ice storm, Brodie and pathologist Dr。 Sita Roy, find themselves the sole guests at the inappropriately named International Hotel, where Younger's body has been kept refrigerated in a cake cabinet。 But evidence uncovered during his autopsy places the lives of both Brodie and Roy in extreme jeopardy。

As another storm closes off communications and the possibility of escape, Brodie must face up not only to the ghosts of his past, but to a killer determined to bury forever the chilling secret that George Younger's investigations had threatened to expose。

A Winter Grave is Peter May at his page-turning, passionate and provocative best。

The characters are so well-portrayed with all their human flaws。 The mystery is intriguing with nicely-placed shocks as the story unfolds。 The setting is so much a part of the story, making it so atmospheric。 This was a thrill, from start to finish。 I received an arc from the author and publisher via NetGalley。 My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own。 I highly recommend this standalone thriller。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed A Winter Grave。 This crime thriller is set in 2051, in which the adverse effects of climate change are horrendous, and technology has advanced enormously。 Detective Cameron Brodie investigates the death of a journalist, whose frozen body has been discovered by a meteorologist in the remote snow-bound depths of the Scottish highlands。 Accompanied by pathologist, Sita Roy, Brodie arrives at the very odd International Hotel via Eve, a pilotless aircraft, and almost immediately I thoroughly enjoyed A Winter Grave。 This crime thriller is set in 2051, in which the adverse effects of climate change are horrendous, and technology has advanced enormously。 Detective Cameron Brodie investigates the death of a journalist, whose frozen body has been discovered by a meteorologist in the remote snow-bound depths of the Scottish highlands。 Accompanied by pathologist, Sita Roy, Brodie arrives at the very odd International Hotel via Eve, a pilotless aircraft, and almost immediately things turn weird。 And it soon becomes apparent why Brodie, who’s recently discovered he doesn’t have long to live, has chosen to take part in this particular investigation。 There’s a real depth to this story that lifts it from being a mere crime thriller to being immensely satisfying, interesting and compelling。 I listened to the audiobook, brilliantly narrated by Peter Forbes – I could listen to him for hours - and this book deserves its place among the best examples of Scottish Noir。 Recommended。 。。。more

Set in the future - the year 2051 - in the beautiful surroundings of the Scottish highlands, this story starts off strong with the discovery of a dead body, literally frozen in time or I guess I should say ice。The unfortunate victim is a man, investigative reporter George Younger, who had officially been missing for around three months。 Not an expert mountain navigator, just what had he been doing? Simply a new hobby gone wrong or something more sinister?Detective Inspector Cameron Brodie is set the task of finding out whether this was an accident or a murder and when it becomes apparent that it is the later, events seem to go from bad to worse。In the hereafter of the world as we know it giant parts of the planet are now left under water with some countries having entirely disappeared。 In Scotland the melting ice caps halt the Gulf Stream effect which means it is regularly subjected to brutal snow and ice storms。 This in turn frequently cuts of power supplies making Brodie's investigation that much harder。Flashes of the past (although that past is still in our future) provide much needed details, making each character that much more believable, I felt invested in what happened to each of them。As the number of victims begin to increase, the drive to discover the perpetrator also ramps up。Danger lurks and there was a dark, ominous atmosphere with every new chapter, both from events of the past and present。May does a fantastic job of building the suspense。 Brodie's narrative always leaving me with more questions than answers。 I especially enjoyed how he incorporated personal life in with the ongoing inquiries。 It just seemed to bring an extra edge to it all。 I was literally waiting with bated breath to see what would be revealed next。A Winter Grave is filled with thrilling twists and intriguing technology。 It came across as well researched and highly plausible。It is a stand-alone novel with a satisfying conclusion and it definitely won't be the last one of Peter's novels that I read。 。。。more

The reason he declines is his estranged daughter lives locally and she still blames him for the death of her mother ten years ago。 A confrontation is something he has no stomach for。When he discovers he has stage 4 cancer and only a few months left to live he changes his mind。 This will be the last chance he will get to see his daughter and at least try to explain his actions as a reconciliation seems unlikely。 The high ground may be Brodie’s environment, but he quickly finds himself out of his comfort zone。 Opening up over his feelings and actions in the past will prove the easy part as he battles against the control of outside forces to get to the truth。A Winters Grave is an incredible book。 Peter May is a great writer of contemporary crime fiction so that part is given but in this work he has managed to capture the zeitgeist of the 2020’s and project it forward by 30 years。 Much of it may be set in 2051 but it is neither science fiction or some dystopian fantasy but a realistic extrapolation of where we (and more specifically Scotland) may be by then。 A world we can recognise but with chilling prospects ahead in more ways than one。As can reasonably guessed the investigation becomes a murder one and this proves to be the main thrust of the plot, one which is very plausible and worryingly believable。 The second strand is the reason why Cameron needs to unburden his past, not so much as a death bed confession as a dead man walking on his personal Green Mile。 This runs from 2020s to 2040s and covers him meeting Mel and their lives together before her death。Life in 2051 is so believably imagined its disconcerting; the effects of climate change mean all plastics are banned, water levels have risen, the subway flooded, power is nuclear and some hydro and there is constant mass migration as lands are flooded and populations seek higher ground。 Cameron gets some high-tech computer glasses like a modern Google Glass that actually works, and air transport is by EVTOL, electrical vertical take-off and landing craft like helicopters but nothing outlandish。 Then there’s the little observations like the kids are playing on Play Station 15 and houses being 3D printed at location, which make it convincing。Climate change means storms, so atmospheric in film and literature and here it is huge snow falls rather than relentless rain that does the work。 It shrouds things hiding or disguising them, it traps people and limits their scope and horizons。 All of which is cleverly and stylishly used within the prose, nothing is wasted。 Cameron’s relationship with Mel is the emotional thrust of the story a perfect match but ultimately a doomed relationship。 A relationship that causes him desperation and ultimately drags him down to the level of those he despises。 His need to unburden and tell his side of the story to daughter Adele is palpable。 He also explains that he blames himself for squandering life。 Adele starts to come around before her own world is ultimately torn asunder from simple human vulnerably。 Powerful stuff。As someone who has a low opinion of politicians, I am pleased to see that they are portrayed as venal chancers here。 By 2051 Independence has been gained and, quite sensibly the EU re-joined but all is still not rosy。 A SNP replacement is in charge and riding roughshod with the Ecology party the only credible opposition。 The next election is going to prove vital, so depressingly familiar。The pacing is perfectly judged, moving along briskly but with plenty of space for observations which brings the prose alive。 There’s enough action set pieces to keep the most demanding thriller read happy and plenty of jeopardy for Cameron and Adele。Characterisation is strong as is their personal interactions。 I particularly found the scenes shared by Cameron and the pathologist Sita Roy quite touching, especially when they demolish most of a bottle of The Balvenie Doublewood and reveal their inner secrets。 As one of them says ‘in vino veritas’ and there lies the truth indeed。The narration is masterful as I have come to expect from Peter Forbes。A Winter Grave is a magnificent crime thriller and much more as it delivers a chilling warning of a future that we face unless humanity gets a grip of what is happening in a short window of opportunity。 A must read for 2023。Audio review copy from NetGalley - thanks to them the publisher and author。 。。。more

It is the year 2051。 Warnings of climate catastrophe have been ignored, and vast areas of the planet are under water, or uninhabitably hot。 A quarter of the world's population has been displaced by hunger and flooding, and immigration wars are breaking out around the globe as refugees pour into neighbouring countries。Interesting setting for a crime scene。 I enjoy dystopian fiction and Peter May - so this one worked for me。Thanks to Netgallery for the ARC It is the year 2051。 Warnings of climate catastrophe have been ignored, and vast areas of the planet are under water, or uninhabitably hot。 A quarter of the world's population has been displaced by hunger and flooding, and immigration wars are breaking out around the globe as refugees pour into neighbouring countries。Interesting setting for a crime scene。 I enjoy dystopian fiction and Peter May - so this one worked for me。Thanks to Netgallery for the ARC 。。。more

At first I wasn’t too sure about reading a book set in the future, but suddenly 2051 isn’t all that far away。 The author makes the changes believable and the things that stay the same comforting。 The storyline is gripping as Brodie is sent to Northern Scotland to investigate a murder which brings about both reward and sacrifice。 Plenty of characters to sink your teeth into and great movement throughout the book to enrich the story。 I enjoyed this chilling tale, thanks to Netgalley for the advanc At first I wasn’t too sure about reading a book set in the future, but suddenly 2051 isn’t all that far away。 The author makes the changes believable and the things that stay the same comforting。 The storyline is gripping as Brodie is sent to Northern Scotland to investigate a murder which brings about both reward and sacrifice。 Plenty of characters to sink your teeth into and great movement throughout the book to enrich the story。 I enjoyed this chilling tale, thanks to Netgalley for the advance reader copy。 。。。more

This dystopian crime novel kept me reading long into the night with its enthralling plot and compelling glimpse into the future world of climate change。。 The story is set in 2051 with flashbacks to 2023。 By 2051, the failure of the superpowers to curb their energy consumption has led to many countries becoming so hot that they are uninhabitable and many low-lying countries are under water。 But, bizarrely, in Scotland, the disappearance of the warming Gulf Stream has created Arctic winters。 Polic This dystopian crime novel kept me reading long into the night with its enthralling plot and compelling glimpse into the future world of climate change。。 The story is set in 2051 with flashbacks to 2023。 By 2051, the failure of the superpowers to curb their energy consumption has led to many countries becoming so hot that they are uninhabitable and many low-lying countries are under water。 But, bizarrely, in Scotland, the disappearance of the warming Gulf Stream has created Arctic winters。 Police officer, Cameron Brodie is asked to investigate a suspicious death up in the mountains and soon becomes embroiled in a deadly conspiracy to hide the truth。 Brodie has very personal reasons for wanting to travel to The Highlands, and this is gradually revealed on his arrival。 As ever, Peter May's ability to describe a place so that the reader can almost feel they are there is phenomenal。 I read the book in a warm room, feeling as though there was snow and ice all around me。 This descriptive flare is combined with a highly plausible idea of how technology may have evolved to aid the solving of crime in the middle of the 21st century。 May manages to place this technology at the centre of the story very convincingly and it is obvious that he has thoroughly researched his subject。 I have been careful not to add to many details to this review as the tiny twists and turns in the plot are so skillfully done that it would be a pity to spoil them。 This is certainly a book I will recommend to my friends。 。。。more

I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for an advance copy of A Winter Grave, a stand-alone thriller set in Scotland in 2051。DI Cameron Brodie is sent from Glasgow to the Scottish village of Kinlochleven to investigate the death of a journalist found frozen in the ice by a local meteorologist。 What he finds there is more trouble than a dying man needs。I thoroughly enjoyed A Winter Grove, which is a compulsive read on more than one level。 Firstly it is set in the near future and paints I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for an advance copy of A Winter Grave, a stand-alone thriller set in Scotland in 2051。DI Cameron Brodie is sent from Glasgow to the Scottish village of Kinlochleven to investigate the death of a journalist found frozen in the ice by a local meteorologist。 What he finds there is more trouble than a dying man needs。I thoroughly enjoyed A Winter Grove, which is a compulsive read on more than one level。 Firstly it is set in the near future and paints a very bleak picture of what climate change wreaks, secondly it is a murder investigation with a conspiratorial bent and thirdly it is a story of a dying man coming to terms with his troubled past。 I also liked the familiarity of the Glasgow setting and could picture the areas described。 I will be honest and say that I would have rated this novel at 5* if it hadn’t painted such a bleak picture of the future。 I can’t say if the author will be accused of climate change propaganda and hysteria, but most of it seems like reasonable extrapolation to me and it’s not pleasant。 It broke my heart to see my home town of Glasgow under water for the most part and mass migration inciting even more racism, to cite a couple of examples。 The narrative switches between 2051 and 2023 when Cammie reminisces about his past and tries to set some misconceptions straight。 Again, it is a sad story and I will confess to not understanding some of the character’s’ motivations and actions, but there is redemption and a strange sense of uplift by the end of it。 What happens to him has a dark Scottish humour to it。The investigation held me riveted。 I don’t know what I expected, but what I got surprised me。 There are plenty of twists and turns and really unexpected events, culminating in an action packed finale with surprising motivations and outcomes。 As I said it is a bit conspiratorial, but somehow it fits into the world the author has imagined。A Winter Grave is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending。 。。。more

What a spectacular read this was from Peter May!
