Summary

Your ability to change everything - including yourself - starts here

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman。 In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing。

But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality。 Except for one: Calvin Evans, the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with - of all things - her mind。 True chemistry results。

Like science, life is unpredictable。 Which is why a few years later, Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America's most beloved cooking show, Supper at Six。 Elizabeth's unusual approach to cooking ('combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride') proves revolutionary。 But as her following grows, not everyone is happy。 Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn't just teaching women to cook。 She's daring them to change the status quo。

Thoroughly enjoyed this captivating book。

I liked the dog best。

I absolutely loved this book! I especially loved Elizabeth Zott’s bold character and how her steadfast authenticity attracted a “family” for herself after such tragedy。 Loved the twists and turns, and how the true story of Calvin is told - in almost opposite ways - through both Mad & Zott。 Highly recommend!

I loved this book! It was just such an enjoyable read from start to finish。 The premise of confronting the age-old stereotypes through humorous historical fiction made this both a fun and thought-provoking read。 I just really appreciated the fresh approach, intelligent humor, and loved the nod to chemistry and the sciences。 This was a fun book!

DNF but I’m counting it towards my books for 2023 so I don’t make the mistake of picking it up again。

Enjoyed the book and characters especially the dog!

This was a difficult book。 My Mom passed away when our adult relationship was just starting to blossom, so my memories of how she explained being a woman in the era of Elizabeth Zott are from my teenager’s perspective。 I remember her anger and a few examples of the discrimination she experienced, so reading certain parts of this book were close to home。 It left me wondering if she ever experienced things on that level。 It was hard for me to not be taken aback and almost offended by the extreme n This was a difficult book。 My Mom passed away when our adult relationship was just starting to blossom, so my memories of how she explained being a woman in the era of Elizabeth Zott are from my teenager’s perspective。 I remember her anger and a few examples of the discrimination she experienced, so reading certain parts of this book were close to home。 It left me wondering if she ever experienced things on that level。 It was hard for me to not be taken aback and almost offended by the extreme nature of some personalities in the book as I personally haven’t encountered people like that, but having my eyes open to the world as it currently stands, I can definitely see it’s possible those personalities exist somewhere。 I started and stopped this audiobook over a couple weeks, and actually fell asleep through it many times having to rewind it。 It brings me back to the idea that your first thought about something you encounter is how you were trained to think…。。well, I finally finished the book and have so much more to think about on it, however I will say that I greatly appreciated the epilogue and hearing the author’s thoughts of how and why the book went together as it did。 。。。more

One of those books I couldn't wait to finish but didn't want to end。Also, I agree with most of the criticism, but it was still really enjoyable and fun to read。 One of those books I couldn't wait to finish but didn't want to end。Also, I agree with most of the criticism, but it was still really enjoyable and fun to read。 。。。more

It is honestly so hard to put into words how PHENOMENAL this book is。 This is not normally a book I would dare to entertain reading。 I safely assumed (as with most "chick lit" as it's called on here) that it would be the usual "oh so relatable, wine drinking, strong and independent, woman, yet somehow inexplicably drawn to this tall, strong, handsome man able to take control of a room that all men respect" nonsense。 Aka every Colleen Hoover book ever written。 However I could NOT have been more w It is honestly so hard to put into words how PHENOMENAL this book is。 This is not normally a book I would dare to entertain reading。 I safely assumed (as with most "chick lit" as it's called on here) that it would be the usual "oh so relatable, wine drinking, strong and independent, woman, yet somehow inexplicably drawn to this tall, strong, handsome man able to take control of a room that all men respect" nonsense。 Aka every Colleen Hoover book ever written。 However I could NOT have been more wrong about this book。 It subverted every nonsense trope I had expected going into this generic "romance" book I took it for。 I was SO pleasantly surprised how nuanced the protagonist and the rest of the characters were。 The characters I absolutely loved。 This book should be mandatory reading for all people, but especially women。 I found this book so empowering to read。 As a typically emotionless man, I found myself laughing out loud at parts and literally tearing up in others。 Superb book。 Rarely would I rate a book a 10/10, but this one just takes the cake! Well done Bonnie Garmus。。。 You understand what true empowerment is VS the Cardi B's of the world or what the media would propagate。 This book is genuinely hysterical at parts and deeply sad at other parts。 I'm struggling to not call this my favorite book of all time at this point。 Do yourselves the favor and give it a read。。。 It is nothing like what you would expect it to be, I guarantee! 。。。more

One of my rare 5 stars。 So many women have recommended this to me, and they are all right。 I was smiling as I turned the pages, even as I raged against the misogyny。 Yes it's a bit of a fairy story, but in a good way。 We need more Elizabeth Gotts in the world! I loved this book。 I thought based on the title that it was going to be a sappy romance but it turned out to be a funny historical fiction novel。 I really loved getting to see the dogs perspective on things。 He was a bit of humour in some otherwise very sad and depressing moments。 Highly recommend。

Hope Locker

Cute book! I enjoyed the character, but toward the middle/end of the book it got a little bit boring and repetitive。 Still a fun read。

Julie Rolle

Actually had it read to me by Radio 4!

Lots of hype about this book, and many people recommending it, so I finally read it。 It didn’t quite live up to expectations, though I definitely enjoyed it。 The beginning was… a bummer。 And I kind of wasn’t prepared for it。 Also, the storytelling didn’t feel quite as on point there。 I found the second half much more enjoyable。 Six thirty might be my favorite character。

Zuzana Malá

Úžasně vykreslená doba a postavení ženy。 Zajímavé a hluboké myšlenky šmrncnuté chemií。Propojení vědy a vaření společně s charakterem hlavní postavy dokonalé。 Jen to na mě působilo smutně a lehce depresivně。 NÉ VTIPNĚ (až na pár scén)!!!

I was suckered in by all the hype around this book。 It was just ok。 Fast easy read。 I like books with strong female characters but I didn’t bond with Elizabeth Zott。 It felt at times like it was over the top and feminism was being shoved down my throat。 Honestly, I enjoyed the passages in the book from the dogs point of view。 I can easily see this being made into a movie。

Great book! I didn't give it five stars because the dog's abilities were just too much for me。 Great book! I didn't give it five stars because the dog's abilities were just too much for me。 。。。more

Peak white feminism and author makes sure you know their stance on religion, however i thoroughly enjoyed the story。

This is a heartbreaking tale of prejudice, struggle, and making the best with a very positive ending。 I was prepared to not love it because it's so popular, but I thought it was quite good! I especially liked the audio book format, which set the tone for the types of interactions Zott had throughout the book。 She has a lot of lines that could be interpreted in multiple ways (with drama! with acid。 with sarcasm), so it was good to have a consistent tone set by the narrator throughout。 This is a heartbreaking tale of prejudice, struggle, and making the best with a very positive ending。 I was prepared to not love it because it's so popular, but I thought it was quite good! I liked this one a lot! The stem world is foreign to me / not at all in my background so I felt like I learned quite a bit。 I also loved the way the points of view changed throughout the book and that we got some insight about unconventional points of view - like six thirty’s。 overall an awesome read。 I loved the first half but felt like the last half dragged quite a bit

DNF'd at 8。5%。 Well, I tried。 I believe this was one of the best-selling books of 2022, and many people love it。 But it wasn't for me by a long shot - the prose was pedestrian, at best, the main character 。。。 irritating, and the 'plot' the worst kind of 'chick-lit'。 But most egregiously, for some reason it is (allegedly) set in the '60's - and yet there was not one single period detail that made me believe we weren't in 2022。 Apparently this is being adapted into a television mini-series starrin DNF'd at 8。5%。 Well, I tried。 I believe this was one of the best-selling books of 2022, and many people love it。 But it wasn't for me by a long shot - the prose was pedestrian, at best, the main character 。。。 irritating, and the 'plot' the worst kind of 'chick-lit'。 But most egregiously, for some reason it is (allegedly) set in the '60's - and yet there was not one single period detail that made me believe we weren't in 2022。 Apparently this is being adapted into a television mini-series starring Brie Larson, and since I detest her as well, I can cheerfully avoid THAT also。 Avanti! 。。。more

Absolutely wonderful book Story about a brilliant young woman in the 1950s trying to thrive in the world of science which is donated by men—men who refuse to believe she is even capable。

A masterfully written, intelligent take on the social injustice women have endured and continue to endure。 This book is encouragement for all women to rise up to their full potential。 Thank you Bonnie Garmus for your contribution in keeping the conversation of this incredibly important topic alive。

Carla Bolton

Excellent read love the unique story and the quirky characters

4。5⭐️s。 I absolutely LOVED, hearing every characters thoughts/perspective! I especially loved the dogs thoughts and the baby 😆。 Very cool way to write a book。 Seriously, everyone was so cool and of course I want to name my next dog something like six-thirty! My only negative comment is I didn’t love the non-belief in God & the little bits of Catholic bashing。

Elizabeth Zott is a spitfire, a frustrated feminist, humanist, scientist in the early 1960's。Men are either would-be rapists, narcissists, chauvinist pigs---or else enlightened, undemanding, and angelic。Predictable contemporary worldviews, giving Elizabeth an almost prophetic voice。 Unabashed religion-bashing。The ending was absolutely ridiculous。 But I still wanted to know how things would turn out for Miss Zott。 And I really liked the dog。 Elizabeth Zott is a spitfire, a frustrated feminist, humanist, scientist in the early 1960's。Men are either would-be rapists, narcissists, chauvinist pigs---or else enlightened, undemanding, and angelic。Predictable contemporary worldviews, giving Elizabeth an almost prophetic voice。 Unabashed religion-bashing。The ending was absolutely ridiculous。 But I still wanted to know how things would turn out for Miss Zott。 And I really liked the dog。 。。。more

Einstaklega skemmtilega skrifuð bók og vel þýdd。 Persónusköpunin svo sniðug。 Var alltaf spennt að fara að lesa og langaði sjaldan að hætta。 Þó hún virðist vera löng er hún einmitt mátuleg að lengd og höfundurinn nær að búa til mjög skemmtilegan söguþráð sem heldur lesendanum á tánnum og óþreigjufullum að komast að því hvað gerist á næstu blaðsíðu!
