An original introduction from the publisher
When Shai is caught replacing the Moon Scepter with her nearly flawless forgery, she must bargain for her life。 An assassin has left the Emperor Ashravan comatose, a circumstance concealed only by the death of his wife。 If the emperor does not emerge after his hundred-day mourning period, the rule of the Heritage Faction will be forfeit and the empire will fall into chaos。

Shai is given an impossible task: to create--to Forge--a new soul for the emperor in fewer than one hundred days。 But her soul-Forgery is considered an abomination by her captors。 She is confined to a tiny, dirty chamber, guarded by a man who hates her, spied upon by politicians, and trapped behind a door sealed in her own blood。 Shai's only possible ally is the emperor's most loyal councillor, Gaotona, who struggles to understand her true talent。

Time is running out for Shai。 Forging, while deducing the motivations of her captors, she needs a perfect plan to escape。。。

4。5 I’m tackling Sanderson in a roundabout way — I started with his wobbly but much-loved debut Elantris and followed this up with the Emperor’s Soul, a Hugo Award winning novella set in the same world as Elantris。 It’s not a sequel — in fact, I counted less than a handful of references to things I would have recognized from Elantris。 Sanderson indicates in his postscript that he developed the story first, and then set the story on Sel because of its magic system’s similarities and feel to what 4。5 I’m tackling Sanderson in a roundabout way — I started with his wobbly but much-loved debut Elantris and followed this up with the Emperor’s Soul, a Hugo Award winning novella set in the same world as Elantris。 It’s not a sequel — in fact, I counted less than a handful of references to things I would have recognized from Elantris。 Sanderson indicates in his postscript that he developed the story first, and then set the story on Sel because of its magic system’s similarities and feel to what he wrote in Elantris。 To me, this felt like a really organic and smart way to build worlds while focusing primarily on story and character。 It makes me excited to continue through his bibliography (Mistborn next!)。The Emperor’s Soul is a really intriguing yarn about truth, personhood, self。 politics… in short, I can see why it won a Hugo。 It could easily be assigned for funsies in a graduate sociology seminar to understand why theory matters。 And what makes this story so good is that it *can* meet that level of discourse, but you can still have a lot of fun reading it。 。。。more

The additional deleted prologue was interesting and yet I agree the best action was to cut it。 Though it did reveal the truth of who the unnamed Fool actually was。。。as I suspected from the start。

Back into Sanderson’s Cosmere after a long time and this small Hugo-winning novella is a winner; one that deals with the nature of authenticity in art, in life, and in our dealings with one another。 I’m reminded of the lyrics of the song “Judas Unrepentant” which dealt with similar real-life circumstances surrounding infamous art restorer and forger Tom Keating, who turned to forgery after his own art career never took off。 His desire to destabilize the art world by fooling the “experts” with hi Back into Sanderson’s Cosmere after a long time and this small Hugo-winning novella is a winner; one that deals with the nature of authenticity in art, in life, and in our dealings with one another。 I’m reminded of the lyrics of the song “Judas Unrepentant” which dealt with similar real-life circumstances surrounding infamous art restorer and forger Tom Keating, who turned to forgery after his own art career never took off。 His desire to destabilize the art world by fooling the “experts” with his own note-for-note fakes。“Feeling like Robin HoodJust as good as Rembrandt or Titian” 。。。more

Excellent, short read。 But it needed room to breath。There are some amazing themes to explore here about art, truth, and pride。 The novella format just doesn't allow the space to properly explore them。Altogether it's pretty good。 The short length and unique themes makes it an easy recommendation。 Unfortunately, the ideas are just too big for the novella format。 Excellent, short read。 But it needed room to breath。There are some amazing themes to explore here about art, truth, and pride。 The novella format just doesn't allow the space to properly explore them。Altogether it's pretty good。 The short length and unique themes makes it an easy recommendation。 Unfortunately, the ideas are just too big for the novella format。 。。。more

Excellent read。 I loved the magic system, and it really spoke to the question of art of forgery, as well as the intricacies of the human soul/mind。 Highly recommended。Besides, I'm always here for more cosmere!
