Really enjoyed this one。 It came to me as present and I was super excited to delve right into it。 I can’t deny that the first 1/3 of the book was a bit bland, with whatever was the story arc of the underworlders。 Didn’t care for them for the threat of Doomsday was imminent and I couldn’t care for them。 Then when the JLA entered the picture my intrigue began to grow and once Superman started to throw the heavy punchers around, I was completely sold on the story。 It was kind of sand to see that ba Really enjoyed this one。 It came to me as present and I was super excited to delve right into it。 I can’t deny that the first 1/3 of the book was a bit bland, with whatever was the story arc of the underworlders。 Didn’t care for them for the threat of Doomsday was imminent and I couldn’t care for them。 Then when the JLA entered the picture my intrigue began to grow and once Superman started to throw the heavy punchers around, I was completely sold on the story。 It was kind of sand to see that basically Superman was the savior of Metropolis and his only help。 Like nobody stood a chance with doomsday。 The carnage was brutal, and the way everyone basically put their foot in front of Superman had me irate。 I was mad and then like the man of steel could hear my thoughts, he voiced the same concern I was having with everyone being in the middle of a very dangerous and deadly battle。 And those final panels had me all kinds of heartbroken。 The artwork was a delight。 I really miss the way cómics used to look so lush and handsomely drawn。 Like you could tell effort was put in it。 The profiles, the emotions, the anatomy and the architecture was so gorgeous it took me several minutes to move from one page to the other。 I wanted to drink as much of the details as it was possible。 For that I’m giving this 4/5 stars。 。。。more

One of DCs best graphics novels。 Some would even say this was their peak。

One of the fun things about reading old event comics is being reminded of the weird status quo shifts titles were trying at the time。 What does Lex Luthor have to say about the death of his arch-foe? Surprisingly little, as he's pretending to be a young Aussie bloke with a big red beard。 Who fights side-by-side with Superman against the rampaging menace? Why, it's。。。 Bloodwynd, who if memory serves is about to be revealed as the Martian Manhunter blacking up。It's a handy reminder that there are One of the fun things about reading old event comics is being reminded of the weird status quo shifts titles were trying at the time。 What does Lex Luthor have to say about the death of his arch-foe? Why, it's。。。 Bloodwynd, who if memory serves is about to be revealed as the Martian Manhunter blacking up。It's a handy reminder that there are no such things as "timeless" superhero comics。 Nonsense about Superman, Batman et al being a "modern mythology" gets their value arse-over-tit - this junk is fun to revisit because of the mirror it holds up to the mores and concerns of its time, and diminishes in value the more it circles the wagons to cut itself off from the outside world and speak only to nerds。"The Death Of Superman" is trying its best to speak to people beyond nerds - and it succeeded thanks to a media which happily played along。 The actual story is a case of getting Superman from A to B (or in this case A to D) with minimal interest - it's six issues of fighting against a monster who is entirely unstoppable until such point as the plot calls for him not to be。 At the time, this was a huge disappointment - especially since the Superman titles were the most reliable chicken-soup comfort comics on the stands。 They were a gentle weekly soap opera in which the never-ending battle generally took second billing to, say, Jimmy Olsen's disastrous career moves - a vibe which never quite recovered from the success of this story。A weekly schedule did mean the creative teams could co-ordinate well on a story, and like most long Superman stories of the time this reads seamlessly。 But it was also the case that nobody got the 90s Superman gig for being a brilliant action artist - the most interesting art by far here comes from Jon Bogdanove, and his penultimate issue is the only time the Doomsday story is close to exciting as a piece of comics-making。 Superman 75, which ends the story, is by contrast a right mess: big action scenes just aren't Dan Jurgens' strong point and the decision to tell the story all in splash pages robs all his images of momentum。 In a meta sense it sells the comic as An Important Event but as a piece of storytelling it's weak。Most of the enjoyment is in the build up, and that's where the distinctive early-90s flavour of "The Death Of Superman" comes over。 This is a story told through and saturated in broadcast media - news choppers, Lois lane reportage, garbled cable TV reports, Superman hearing about Doomsday in the middle of an interview。 It's setting up the overall theme of the Death and Return (inasmuch as there is one) - this is going to be a story about how people view Superman more than a "Superman story"。 It's appropriate that the final issue in the collection isn't Superman 75, but the fake issue of 'Newstime' DC put out as a cash-in to the storyline, full of nods to the fans (as the magazine was at this point being edited by a disguised demon) and weird bits (two pages of LP reviews!) which had nothing to do with the story but are oddly fascinating as a piece of in-universe ephemera。 More interesting, for sure, than most of the self-conscious mythmaking in the story itself。 。。。more

Part of me hates to only give this 3 stars。 It is a comic book classic, but I think that's more for what happened than how it happens。 For an era where I consider the Superman comics to be at their finest, particularly those by Dan Jurgens, there isn't a lot of depth in this story。 Doomsday was a villain we'd never seen before。 He doesn't speak。 He's just a rage monster that broke free from his cage。 We'd learn more about Doomsday over the years since, but at that point he lacked motivation, per Part of me hates to only give this 3 stars。 It is a comic book classic, but I think that's more for what happened than how it happens。 For an era where I consider the Superman comics to be at their finest, particularly those by Dan Jurgens, there isn't a lot of depth in this story。 Doomsday was a villain we'd never seen before。 He doesn't speak。 He's just a rage monster that broke free from his cage。 We'd learn more about Doomsday over the years since, but at that point he lacked motivation, personality, or purpose other than to kill Superman。 The battle is epic, of course。 Whether he's leveling the Justice League of the time or duking it out with Superman in the final brawl, it's epic action。 The earlier issues in the story start out with more plot, but it isn't related to Doomsday。 It's good plot from stories both before and after this story, but it is an ongoing series of subplots from a period where comics weren't packaged for graphic novels like they are today。 Without some context going in, the story of the underworlders isn't much of a fit。 Despite the lack of depth, the story does hammer one important theme home: Superman goes down swinging。 He fights until there is literally no fight left。The Justice League moments are highlights to me。 Readers today may not recognize the slate of heroes on the roster at the time, but they were a decent variation of the team that slowly lost their luster over the next several years。 。。。more

Superman gets a bad reputation as being a boring character, since he is rarely able to be challenged if plot-convenient kryptonite isn't available。 This comic brings stakes to Superman, which makes his character and choices shine brighter。 His fighting capability is displayed, we see his concern to protect innocent lives, and we see how Superman is a symbol of hope for mankind。 Doomsday is masterfully introduced; it is a force of nature that intends to kill and destroy everything in it's path。 N Superman gets a bad reputation as being a boring character, since he is rarely able to be challenged if plot-convenient kryptonite isn't available。 This comic brings stakes to Superman, which makes his character and choices shine brighter。 His fighting capability is displayed, we see his concern to protect innocent lives, and we see how Superman is a symbol of hope for mankind。 Doomsday is masterfully introduced; it is a force of nature that intends to kill and destroy everything in it's path。 No origin is necessary, no explination of its motivation is given。 He shows up, defeats the JLA, quickly showing how large of a threat doomsday is to Superman, making the following battle feel that much more desperate。 All in all, this book is a fantastic story, one of the best in Superman's canon。 。。。more

Here's the thing:Doomsday is boring。I understand that since then, and even before then, there have been "powerhouse" characters who don't say much or really do much that have been in more interesting stories and done more interesting things。。。。。。BUT。。。I uh, personally, don't know about those things other than "they exist" and because of that I kinda like Doomsday as a different sort of antagonist。 I also like the impact of the story。 So, hey, I like it。 Here's the thing:Doomsday is boring。I understand that since then, and even before then, there have been "powerhouse" characters who don't say much or really do much that have been in more interesting stories and done more interesting things。。。。。。BUT。。。I uh, personally, don't know about those things other than "they exist" and because of that I kinda like Doomsday as a different sort of antagonist。 I also like the impact of the story。 So, hey, I like it。 。。。more

It was nice to finally read this。 It's one of those iconic stories where they do it over and over, and you never really know the whole thing。 I don't see the collected edition I actually read, so this will have to do, but。 I do have to say, I hate that Lois just drops his body once he's dead。 Like woman, show some respect。 Rude。 Other than that, it's iconic, and watching Doomsday tear through the lame second string leaguers was rough。 It was nice to finally read this。 It's one of those iconic stories where they do it over and over, and you never really know the whole thing。 I don't see the collected edition I actually read, so this will have to do, but。 I do have to say, I hate that Lois just drops his body once he's dead。 Like woman, show some respect。 Rude。 Other than that, it's iconic, and watching Doomsday tear through the lame second string leaguers was rough。 。。。more

At the time, mostly every Superman title was harshly suffering from low sales, and so, DC decided to kill off Supes and with it create Chaos personified: Doomsday。 People were taking the character for granted, and when this came out, the event of Superman’s death was all over the news, the papers etc。。。 Many people dismiss the book as bad because of that intent and the fact that there weren’t enough story beforehand。 I really don’t think it is bad - at all。 I actually really liked it and the art At the time, mostly every Superman title was harshly suffering from low sales, and so, DC decided to kill off Supes and with it create Chaos personified: Doomsday。 People were taking the character for granted, and when this came out, the event of Superman’s death was all over the news, the papers etc。。。 Many people dismiss the book as bad because of that intent and the fact that there weren’t enough story beforehand。 I really don’t think it is bad - at all。 I actually really liked it and the art was so wonderful。 (If it absolutely HAS to happen, I very much prefer ‘Doomsday’ be the one to kill Superman than any other villain we might have encountered in the rogues gallery)。 。。。more

This story is iconic, more because of the shock value of the time。 We must remember that at the time Superman was not as popular as he had been, they decided that the best course of action was to kill him。 But they needed to kill him in an impactful way。To do this they created the plot mcguffen Doomsday, a being that evolved to withstand everything。We see the lame version of the Justice League of America of that time, really none of the interesting characters we know, fighting this new menace。Do This story is iconic, more because of the shock value of the time。 We must remember that at the time Superman was not as popular as he had been, they decided that the best course of action was to kill him。 But they needed to kill him in an impactful way。To do this they created the plot mcguffen Doomsday, a being that evolved to withstand everything。We see the lame version of the Justice League of America of that time, really none of the interesting characters we know, fighting this new menace。Doomsday beats them all to a bloody pulp and only Superman is left to face him。 The fight is long and elaborated。 Only thing is that Superman, the one the narrator states is focused on fighting, is thinking of useless stuff not related to the fight at hand like if it was something not that serious。At the end of the day, I personally didn't like it。 There is an animated movie adaptation back in 2018 based on the New 52 line of comics, that one is the one I recommend。 。。。more
