It was interesting。 It was。 Not the whole book, just the last hundred pages despite them being the toughest too。 You won’t regret the read, that’s for sure。 But read at your own discretion, considering all the warnings。 Read this first book the Commander Rip。 We gotta do what we gotta do to meet the man。

I very much enjoyed the ending of the book, and the world it sets up for the rest of the series。 The drop in stars is simply because it is SO。 DAMN。 INTENSE。 The content of this book is certainly not for everyone, and the content warning at the beginning is certainly valid and important to consider before delving in。

The only reason I went on to read the next book was because a mysterious, muscular, presumably morally grey character was introduced at the last second。 I had to figure out his deal。

Un po’ troppo volgare in certi momenti e la trama quasi inesistente, alcuni momenti interessanti ma due o tre, sinceramente。

This book was so boring and very depressingALL the women in this book have terrible lives and have no backbone for the ENTIRE BOOK!! I’m so sick of these plots。 Look up trigger warnings before reading

This book can be hard to get into at first。 It's difficult and painful in ways that can be hard to describe, especially without spoiling anything。 I am utterly fascinated with Auren's character and the journey she starts in this book。 A great beginning to a fantastic series。 This book can be hard to get into at first。 It's difficult and painful in ways that can be hard to describe, especially without spoiling anything。 I am utterly fascinated with Auren's character and the journey she starts in this book。 A great beginning to a fantastic series。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I was really frustrated and angry reading this。 I’ve noticed a common theme in recent fantasy novels (especially YA and YA adjacent ones) have really sexist and misogynistic male characters, and that often times the MC has an almost stolkholm-syndrome-esque love for said misogynistic men, or they are just really okay with being abused。 Despite being frustrated I finished the book in the hopes that it would get better, but alas。 We started the story with a damsel in distress and ended the story t I was really frustrated and angry reading this。 I’ve noticed a common theme in recent fantasy novels (especially YA and YA adjacent ones) have really sexist and misogynistic male characters, and that often times the MC has an almost stolkholm-syndrome-esque love for said misogynistic men, or they are just really okay with being abused。 Despite being frustrated I finished the book in the hopes that it would get better, but alas。 We started the story with a damsel in distress and ended the story the same way。 !!!SPOILERS BELOW!!!Auren’s character is confusing because at times she’ll be appropriately enraged and upset and will have thoughts like “I no longer trust him to keep me safe” and “I snapped” but then Midas bats his eyes at her and she’s back to being chill about it。 They call the women who are Midas’ harem “saddles” and Auren is referred to as one too。 There is A LOT of abuse in this story, so reader beware。 Sexual slavery, physical assault, threatening behavior, mental/emotional/verbal abuse, emotional/mental manipulation, possessive behavior (not in a healthy or even kinky way, just in a bad way) to name a few。 Midas’ wife has Auren beaten because she hates her (Midas’ wife was dropped into the story abruptly and so far serves no great purpose other than hating Auren), Midas is okay letting her be assaulted by another king and literally sells her at one point?? Like tells this other king that he can f*ck her for one night in exchange for an army。 Auren expresses that she doesn’t want to be raped by the other king and Midas tells her that ‘her c*nt is his to sell or f*ck as he sees fit, and that he can let whoever he wants f*ck her’。 (She is upset about this)。 He also tells her to shut up and look pretty and she is perfectly fine with this。 Midas also LITERALLY has her locked in a cage。 By the end of the book, I was rooting for the “villains” from the Rot King’s court, if only for a change of pace。 To be fair to the author, there IS a content warning for the book, but it does not do the contents justice。 The language used to describe the sexual encounters or fantasies of the characters can be very triggering to some, and a recurring theme is that the men in this book want to leave the women “a c*m covered/filled husk”。 They threaten violence sexual and non, repeatedly especially as it relates to Auren。 This book angered me。 I kept waiting for Auren to wake up and smell the flowers but at no point did she。 She has a few acts of “rebellion” but even that is overshadowed by her constant internal narrative of “oh no Midas will be mad at me”。 。。。more

Surprised to say the least。 This is very, very new adult so please read tw before you dive in。 I am really intrigued by this world of magic。 It’s a King Midas retelling which seems simple at first but I couldn’t put this book down。 It was such an easy read from beginning to end and the world building was easy to comprehend。 I can definitely tell I will enjoy the next books in the series more bc I am very interested in the characters introduced later in this plot。 Auren is gold。 Literally。 She’s Surprised to say the least。 This is very, very new adult so please read tw before you dive in。 I am really intrigued by this world of magic。 It’s a King Midas retelling which seems simple at first but I couldn’t put this book down。 It was such an easy read from beginning to end and the world building was easy to comprehend。 I can definitely tell I will enjoy the next books in the series more bc I am very interested in the characters introduced later in this plot。 Auren is gold。 Literally。 She’s kept in a cage in King Midas’ castle as some kind of prize; however, she loves him。 It’s some twisted fantasy where he gets to keep her and remain the wealthiest guy ever, but she also loves him and as this story goes on we find out that this is the first time she’s ever without him which of course will lead to some kind of intense character arc journey。 Super excited for the next one! 。。。more

Ok so, I have a couple complaints。This book made me deeply uncomfortable。 I really liked the beginning- I could see a lot of potential。 However, there was just no reprieve in this book。 Outside of gross sexual misconduct after harassment after rape, little happened。 This can’t be your ENTIRE book。 It’s not a story that can stand on its own, it feels like backstory。I was hoping for more emotional progression on the part of the main character。 I wasn’t initially annoyed by her love for Midas becau Ok so, I have a couple complaints。This book made me deeply uncomfortable。 I really liked the beginning- I could see a lot of potential。 However, there was just no reprieve in this book。 Outside of gross sexual misconduct after harassment after rape, little happened。 This can’t be your ENTIRE book。 It’s not a story that can stand on its own, it feels like backstory。I was hoping for more emotional progression on the part of the main character。 I wasn’t initially annoyed by her love for Midas because it only makes sense, she was 15 when she fell in love and was subsequently imprisoned。 However, I was hoping for more progression on that front。I can see this series becoming good, but it’s not quite there yet。 。。。more

3 Stars, but I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series to see where the story will go from here。 I'm excited to see how Malina will use her new found freedom and how Midas will get Auren and the others (probably not the others) back, and explore Auren's hidden abilities。It was a bit long winded, though, and I skimmed a lot of the pages because they weren't very interesting and I was a little bored by the snow pirates。 It's the only reason I didn't finish it quicker because I didn't 3 Stars, but I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series to see where the story will go from here。 I'm excited to see how Malina will use her new found freedom and how Midas will get Auren and the others (probably not the others) back, and explore Auren's hidden abilities。It was a bit long winded, though, and I skimmed a lot of the pages because they weren't very interesting and I was a little bored by the snow pirates。 It's the only reason I didn't finish it quicker because I didn't like those chapters and it seemed so out of place compared to earlier chapters。 。。。more

It definitely seemed more of a set up book for the rest of the series, but it did its job! I'm already reading book 2! (Usually, I skip to a different book or series so it says a lot when I continue a series straight through!) The FMC, Auren was my favorite。 She is always looking at the bright side of things and close to my age。 The narrative voice was well written。 She showed strength and slight humor throughout even when it wasn't an ideal circumstance。 There seems to be a savior complex riddled with manipulation because she tries to justify her caged life for "love"。 I'm definitely getting Tamlin from ACOTAR engery there。 I look forward to reading more about her past, how she grows, and the other involved characters in the next books!I would recommend this book to certain people due to trigger warnings, spice and cliffhanger。 。。。more

Honestly this one was hard for me to get through。 I know others have said it gets better, and it did set things up for a good story to be told so I may keep reading。

hopefully book 2 & 3 are better I’ve heard so many great things about book 3 so I’m trudging on! I have heard book 1 is setting the stage so…。 I hope that’s the case! This was okay - I’m just used to more depth / details / but I like the story line so far

Rather juvenile writing for something with such mature themes。 A lot of unnecessary sexism。 What’s the point of Auren saying her ribbons are stronger than they look for her to just use them to do her hair and put on her clothes for 400 pages。

could tell it was a setup book for the rest of the series and didn’t get exciting until the end but SUPER excited to see what’s to come and read the next book so i guess it did it’s job

I wouldn’t consider this book to be romance? Felt like more fantasy for me, but I can definitely see it turning into romance in the next book, hopefully。 I spent the whole book waiting to meet the love interest, but unfortunately I’m still not sure who it’s going to be。 My bet is on King Rot, but 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

The last 20% of this book was amazing。 The 80% before was nothing but Stockholm syndrome loving trauma porn。
