Summary

Boys can be anything they want to be! This timely book joins and expands the gender-role conversation and gives middle-grade boys a welcome alternative message: that masculinity can mean many things。

You won't find any stories of slaying dragons or saving princesses here。 In Stories for Boys Who Dare to Be Different, author Ben Brooks-with the help of Quinton Wintor's striking full-color illustrations-offers a welcome alternative narrative: one that celebrates introverts and innovators, sensitivity and resilience, individuality and expression。

It's an accessible compilation of 75 famous and not-so-famous men from the past to the present day, every single one of them a rule-breaker and stereotype-smasher in his own way。 Entries include Frank Ocean, Salvador Dali, Beethoven, Barack Obama, Ai Weiwei, Jesse Owens, and so many more-heroes from all walks of life and from all over the world。

These are short but compelling biographies of many amazing boys and men who, according to the subtitle, "changed the world without killing dragons" (mostly)。 I like how many types of heroes there were。 The author included people you might expect, like kids who overcame physical issues to become great athletes and scientists who persevered despite social pressures。 There were also smaller stories, like the boy who learned about other kids who had lost their hair because of cancer treatments etc。 These are short but compelling biographies of many amazing boys and men who, according to the subtitle, "changed the world without killing dragons" (mostly)。 I like how many types of heroes there were。 The author included people you might expect, like kids who overcame physical issues to become great athletes and scientists who persevered despite social pressures。 There were also smaller stories, like the boy who learned about other kids who had lost their hair because of cancer treatments etc。 and grew his own hair long to make wigs for them。 And amazing but lesser-known stories, like the kid whose parents couldn't afford to send him to school, but he learned from books and rigged up a windmill to give electricity to his village。In addition to great subject matter, the writing is great。 The illustrations are great。 Obviously I would have liked more detail about many of the people, and some accounts probably simplify away the grayer aspects of their lives。 And yeah, I can see some reviewers' philosophical problems with the title。 But I still thought it was a fantastic book, and a good brief introduction to a variety of people that readers can then research more。More accurate rating: 4。5 stars 。。。more

'Stories for Boys Who Dare to Be Different' by Ben Brooks with illustrations by Quinton Winter is a book of short biographies of men who changed the world with alternate methods to violence。There are 77 one page biographies in this book。 There are feminists, pacifists, men who were gay or otherwise oppressed and men who changed the world in other non-violent ways。 The names featured include Alan Turing, Bill Gates, and Tank Man, among many others。Each biography includes a great full color illust 'Stories for Boys Who Dare to Be Different' by Ben Brooks with illustrations by Quinton Winter is a book of short biographies of men who changed the world with alternate methods to violence。There are 77 one page biographies in this book。 There are feminists, pacifists, men who were gay or otherwise oppressed and men who changed the world in other non-violent ways。 The names featured include Alan Turing, Bill Gates, and Tank Man, among many others。Each biography includes a great full color illustration (my favorite is the one for Frederick Douglass)。 The title including the word 'Stories' might be a tad misleading since this is all non-fiction, but the stories are compelling and interesting, for the most part。 。。。more

In general, this book is great, but I did have a big problem with "Uyaquq。" It clearly states in the text that the Yup'ik people "lived together in underground houses built from grass and walrus skin," but the illustration shows him in an igloo。 Super frustrating。I also thought the treatment of William Moulton Marston was very interesting。 I realize that it must be very challenging to encapsulate someone's entire life and legacy into a single page, but in a book that purposefully chose to includ In general, this book is great, but I did have a big problem with "Uyaquq。" It clearly states in the text that the Yup'ik people "lived together in underground houses built from grass and walrus skin," but the illustration shows him in an igloo。 Super frustrating。I also thought the treatment of William Moulton Marston was very interesting。 I realize that it must be very challenging to encapsulate someone's entire life and legacy into a single page, but in a book that purposefully chose to include people who challenge gender stereotypes, it seems an interesting omission to not include William's polyamorous partner, Olive。 。。。more

Personally, this book is very inspiring and unique。 I think that because of how it displays basically boys who dared to be different with examples of successful men who had a story to tell。 This includes many people such as Muhammad Ali, Vincent Van Gogh, Steve Irwin and many other men who are well-known within their community。 I highly recommend this book to young boys as it makes them aware about successful and inspiring men who could help them through the biographies the author, Ben Brooks, h Personally, this book is very inspiring and unique。 I think that because of how it displays basically boys who dared to be different with examples of successful men who had a story to tell。 This includes many people such as Muhammad Ali, Vincent Van Gogh, Steve Irwin and many other men who are well-known within their community。 I highly recommend this book to young boys as it makes them aware about successful and inspiring men who could help them through the biographies the author, Ben Brooks, has written about them。 。。。more

A nice selection of inspiring men。 I found it interesting, but extremely repetitive in structure。 The illustrations made all by the same illustrator were nice, but lacked diversity, and the descriptions followed always the same guidelines。 Could be improved。

Checked out from library and read with my son。 We both loved it。 Easy to read a few stories each night。 Susan B Anthony’s dad was really cool - I do wish though that there didn’t have to be a “boy’s book” and a “girl’s book”。 Let’s just do stories about really cool boys and girls who dare to be different or whatever。

I read this to my 10 year son and the stories are amazing。 From famous people like Spielberg to men I wasn't familiar with, the stories are only one page yet poignant。 Tomorrow we're going to research them more online。 The illustrations are creative and unique to each person。 I read this to my 10 year son and the stories are amazing。 From famous people like Spielberg to men I wasn't familiar with, the stories are only one page yet poignant。 Tomorrow we're going to research them more online。 The illustrations are creative and unique to each person。 。。。more

This was loaned to me by a student and I thoroughly enjoyed it despite there being a couple that weren't edited that well! In any case, I love the spirit of this。 I love the idea of curating a collection of boys who aren't famous for being aggressive or dominating a sport, but rather for being an outsider of some kind and persevering。 This was loaned to me by a student and I thoroughly enjoyed it despite there being a couple that weren't edited that well!

It's a great compilation of biographies of great men but it's just not like Rebel girls。And my best one was about school boys who wanted to wear uniforms like girls at school to feel the breeze on their legs in hot weather。 It's a great compilation of biographies of great men but it's just not like Rebel girls。And my best one was about school boys who wanted to wear uniforms like girls at school to feel the breeze on their legs in hot weather。 。。。more

Well, this is awkward。 Most people talked about are framed in the narrative of overcoming something, of being brave or having great amounts of adversity and are focused on this rather than having entries are complete, showing they are more than that the things they have overcome。 This seems like they wanted to make people seem like inspirational paragons of virtue, rather than real people who young people can legitimately look up to and use their experiences as inspiration to 'dare to be differe Well, this is awkward。 Most people talked about are framed in the narrative of overcoming something, of being brave or having great amounts of adversity and are focused on this rather than having entries are complete, showing they are more than that the things they have overcome。 This seems like they wanted to make people seem like inspirational paragons of virtue, rather than real people who young people can legitimately look up to and use their experiences as inspiration to 'dare to be different' themselves。 。。。more

Overall, the profiles were interesting。 There were a number of people in here that I did not know。 It was also interesting to see two males, whose female relatives get the spotlight more often。 Daniel Anthony, who I am pretty sure is Susan B。 Anthony's father, was highlighted here。 This book also highlighted Hans Scholl, the brother of Sophie Scholl。 There was a profile that I think should have gone into a different book, but that is due to how I am thinking about it。 I am not going into that ta Overall, the profiles were interesting。 There were a number of people in here that I did not know。 It was also interesting to see two males, whose female relatives get the spotlight more often。 Daniel Anthony, who I am pretty sure is Susan B。 Anthony's father, was highlighted here。 This book also highlighted Hans Scholl, the brother of Sophie Scholl。 There was a profile that I think should have gone into a different book, but that is due to how I am thinking about it。 I am not going into that talk for it is totally off-topic, but my next points are relative。 Different How?I wished this book had an introduction to explain the title: "Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different。" What is "different" in this case? If the book is making the case that these boys are being different then it should explain what marker they are measuring the differences。 What standard is the author using? Technically, everyone is different。 Nobody is like anybody else。 Sure, there is overlap, but we are all unique individuals。 As we grow up, we are trying to be more ourselves。 From my perspective and my belief, it means becoming more the person that God has made me to be。 Even if you do not believe in God, my next statement is still applicable。 When we are trying to be more ourselves, it means a combination of comparing yourself to a report card and doing an archeology/paleontology dig。 The standards in the report card is what makes you you, but you may be above, below, or at expectations。 Then the dig is discovering those standards。 Sometimes what you think is a bone that belongs to the skeleton that is you is actually petrify wood。 With that said, I am not sure if all of the profiles in this book are being the themselves or not。 ProfilesSpeaking of profiles, I think a profile was missing from this book。 Why is Jesus is not listed here? If we do not define different as being more like ourselves, instead define it as being different from the times, then Jesus still qualifies on that level。 Jesus interacted with the dregs and outcasts of society。 He also taught people a different way of thinking。 If that is not "daring to be different" then I am not sure what is。 I think there are other profiles that could be included。 While saints do not do what they do to get secular fame, I think they can still be inspirational to non-religious people, such as Saint Maximilian Kolbe。 BibliographyWhere is the bibliography? There are some parts in the profiles that I wanted to double-check or learn more about。 The Four Chaplains were the only ones that were introduced as a group, but there names were not mentioned at all。 Who were they? Also why did some people have no birth year? Verdict: As I said before, this was an interesting read。 。。。more
