Summary

Pre-order Evan Smoak's thrilling return in The Last Orphan, when everything changes and everything is at risk。

As a child, Evan Smoak was plucked out of a group home, raised and trained as an off-the-books assassin for the government as part of the Orphan program。 When he broke with the program and went deep underground, he left with a lot of secrets in his head that the government would do anything to make sure never got out。

When he remade himself as The Nowhere Man, dedicated to helping the most desperate in their times of trouble, Evan found himself slowly back on the government's radar。 Having eliminated most of the Orphans in the program, the government will stop at nothing to eliminate the threat they see in Evan。 But Orphan X has always been several steps ahead of his pursuers。

Until he makes one little mistake。。。

Now the President has him in her control and offers Evan a deal - eliminate a rich, powerful man she says is too dangerous to live and, in turn, she'll let Evan survive。 But when Evan left the Program he swore to only use his skills against those who really deserve it。 Now he has to decide what's more important - his principles or his life。

This review is based on an advance reader's copy。This is the first Orphan X book I have read。 The prologue was an interesting teaser and it took a little while to figure out all the connections, which was nice。 After that, Hurwitz launches straight into over-the-top rather ridiculous scenarios with lots of overdone tropes like the teenage hacker, super hot black widow, serious career woman special agent, and redneck genius。 So, why four stars? Because after I finished reading it, I realized I had FUN! This was a fast action packed read, and even if the characters are overused tropes, I liked them。 So bottom line, this book isn't going to win any awards for literary brilliance, but it is a fast, fun, action packed read。 。。。more

I love the Orphan X series and am always eager to jump into the next new book! I loved this book, but maybe I'm biased。 I love ALL the Orphan X books。 In fact, I just sent the first one to my mother-in-law after reading this one because she has to start reading this series too。 Orphan X/Evan Smoak/Nowhere Man is a decommissioned government trained assassin from the now defunct Orphan program。 Thankfully his handler/trainer was able to train him to be deadly but keep some strain of what made him human。 Now he tries to stay off the government's radar, as they would like noth I loved this book, but maybe I'm biased。 I love ALL the Orphan X books。 In fact, I just sent the first one to my mother-in-law after reading this one because she has to start reading this series too。 Orphan X/Evan Smoak/Nowhere Man is a decommissioned government trained assassin from the now defunct Orphan program。 Thankfully his handler/trainer was able to train him to be deadly but keep some strain of what made him human。 Now he tries to stay off the government's radar, as they would like nothing more than to erase him, he uses his talents to help those who know one else can help。 However, in this installment it's the government who brings him in (following an amazing action scene!!) and want to use his talents again。 However, he has a moral code that he will not abandon and their target does not meet that criteria。 BUT, there is something there that he can not go by unchecked。 And the Orphan X is back on his game。 Most of the regular characters play their roles as well: sexy but deadly, Orphan V, almost Orphan/teenage hacker Joey (my favorite), weapons expert, Tommy Stojack, and Vera II (or is it III?) his plant。 There is lots of action, violence, spy craft, vodka and comedy (Evan is a complicated guy)。I highly recommend starting at the beginning for this series。 This one would be a tough one to jump in on without a lot of background as his history and the growth of his relationships with those in his inner circle。 But you won't regret those first 7 as this is a fantastic series and should be fully absorbed。 And besides this one isn't out until February 14, 2023 so start now and get a head start。 Many thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion。 。。。more

I am a huge fan of the Orphan X series and just reread all of them before starting The Last Orphan。 It was great to just immerse myself into the world and read one book after the other。 This newest installment doesn't disappoint, and we see Evan becoming a bit vulnerable。 He also has to deal with the President trying to enlist him to do a job for her。 His relationship with Joey is also fun to watch as it grows。If you like a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, check out The Last Orphan。 I am a huge fan of the Orphan X series and just reread all of them before starting The Last Orphan。 It was great to just immerse myself into the world and read one book after the other。 This newest installment doesn't disappoint, and we see Evan becoming a bit vulnerable。 He also has to deal with the President trying to enlist him to do a job for her。 His relationship with Joey is also fun to watch as it grows。If you like a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, check out The Last Orphan。 。。。more

This new Orphan X takes Evan Smoak in a slightly different direction。 He is working for the US government even though he resists doing it their way。 Without spoilers a generic description would be that it seems someone high up, with vast resources is responsible for murdering a young man and Smoak is on his trail。 His young protege, Joey is backing him up with her tech skills。 Evan is worrying about the effects of aging and it was really fun for a couple of past characters to make cameo appearan This new Orphan X takes Evan Smoak in a slightly different direction。 He is working for the US government even though he resists doing it their way。 Without spoilers a generic description would be that it seems someone high up, with vast resources is responsible for murdering a young man and Smoak is on his trail。 His young protege, Joey is backing him up with her tech skills。 Evan is worrying about the effects of aging and it was really fun for a couple of past characters to make cameo appearances。 It’s another fun read where it feels like I can’t turn the pages rapidly enough。 If you love this series you won’t want to miss this newest episode。Thanks to @minotaur_books and @macmillanusa for this #advancereaderscopy。 。。。more

Well, wow。 Just when you think a series can't get any better - well, let me amend that; every single one I've read has been impossible to top, and 5 stars is the highest rating I can give。 So let's just say that this, the eighth book featuring "Nowhere Man" Evan Smoak (a。k。a。 Orphan X), is every bit as good as its predecessors。After taking his once government-sanctioned assassin talents private, Evan and the government powers-that-be have honored a truce of sorts - although it's no secret that t Well, wow。 Just when you think a series can't get any better - well, let me amend that; every single one I've read has been impossible to top, and 5 stars is the highest rating I can give。 So let's just say that this, the eighth book featuring "Nowhere Man" Evan Smoak (a。k。a。 Orphan X), is every bit as good as its predecessors。After taking his once government-sanctioned assassin talents private, Evan and the government powers-that-be have honored a truce of sorts - although it's no secret that those powers would capture him in a heartbeat if they could。 And one fine day, they do。 As a condition of his release and possibly an official pardon (or at least looking the other way), none other than the U。S。 President offers him a "job": kill a man she claims is so dangerous that his continuing to live and do his dirty work threatens the very fabric of the country。 Evan, though, isn't convinced; after all, based on past experiences he doesn't trust the government either。 Besides that, his rationalization for going private is to eliminate only those people who have done irreparable (but demonstrable) harm to others and truly, in his opinion, deserve to be removed from this earth。In this case, the target for rubbing out is a filthy rich guy named Luke Divine who lives on Long Island in a palatial home called Tartarus。 He's fond of throwing no-holds-barred parties that have, at least in one known instance, resulted in the deaths of young people。 The President's concern, though, lies more in upcoming environmental legislation she favors and he does not。 Not knowing who to believe - and in some respects, not caring - Evan sets out, with help from some uber-talented friends who will be familiar to loyal readers, to investigate。 And it is there that my description must end if other readers are to get full enjoyment out of the book (and trust me, there's plenty to be had, plus a bit of a cliffhanger that no doubt will factor into the next installment)。 In short, another winner from a very talented author for which I heartily thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for allowing me the pleasure of reading and reviewing。 。。。more

The Last Orphan was difficulty for me to read。 Not because it was dark or gruesome or scary; it was hard for me to read because I just couldn’t get into it at all。 There are many people that are going to love this book, especially those who have been following the series。 I have not, and this was my first book for this series for me。 In the beginning, I felt like I was missing a lot since I hadn’t read the others, but then that feeling went away。 There are some really great action scenes in this The Last Orphan was difficulty for me to read。 Not because it was dark or gruesome or scary; it was hard for me to read because I just couldn’t get into it at all。 There are many people that are going to love this book, especially those who have been following the series。 I have not, and this was my first book for this series for me。 In the beginning, I felt like I was missing a lot since I hadn’t read the others, but then that feeling went away。 There are some really great action scenes in this novel, especially the one in front of the hospital。 That one played out in my mind like it was a movie sequence。 However, there was so much down time between the action scenes, and that time between them was half boring to me; it was filled with too much useless detail。 I also felt like it took too long to get to the point of the book。 Overall, an okay read。 I would still recommend this book; just because it didn’t resonate with me doesn’t mean that it won’t resonate with someone else。 。。。more

Grateful for the chance to read this ARC! Not the genre I typically read, but I definitely found this book chock full of adventure。 A bit too much fighting and killing for my tastes, but I have to admit, this author is a very intelligent writer。 Characters are all very believable and relatable。

Yes。 Will he emerge triumphant? You'll have to read this to find out!For me, the plot here felt a bit worn, but the scenes with the main villain were fascinating。 It's been a long time since X sat with someone face to face like this, where X wasn't extraordinarily secured, and rightfully so。 I also felt that in this volume, the relationship between Joey Morales and Evan went to a deep familial connection heretofore unreached and I AM HERE FOR IT。 It's odd to me that it was this very relationship that I was annoyed by in my first, (but what was really the 7th), Orphan X book, that I now love the most。 Yes, X has had a few relationships where he was accessible and even maybe vulnerable, but there's a scene here, well。。。if you don't at least tear up I don't want to know you。 I had some trepidation that I may not like reading this novel, rather than listening, as I have all the others。 I need not have worried。 I read Evan's dialogue in Scott Brick's voice in my head, (LOL, but really) and I enjoyed reading this just as much, if not more than I would have had I listened。 Because the depth of the characters was really expanded here, and in a direction I loved it to go, I gave this four stars, even though the plot was a little disappointing。 Don't get me wrong, the action and the planning on X's part are all here, but I found the denouement kind of frustrating。 After that though, the final sentences have me feeling ASTRONOMICAL excitement as to what happens next! (3)。 The fun never ends with Orphan X。 Evan is the most cerebral, supposedly ethical and moral assassin around。 Plus, he has really interesting friends, to say nothing of a Houdini like ability to escape any situation, no matter how dire。 The plot here is as crazy as almost all of them are, with the slightest tinge of believability。 That being said, any book with Evan Smoak makes for a super solid read。 I can’t wait for the next one。 Good stuff。

I am trying to define why I enjoy the Orphan X books so much - actually to the point of distraction。 Could be because these are great thrillers with acute attention to detail。 Please don’t let it be because of the gruesome and graphic violence, although there is a certain beauty in the choreography of the fight and destroy scenes。 Then there are the psychological mind games and the reasoning of what constitutes morality。 The exploration of those who need Mr。 Nowhere Man and get to use that phone I am trying to define why I enjoy the Orphan X books so much - actually to the point of distraction。 Could be because these are great thrillers with acute attention to detail。 Please don’t let it be because of the gruesome and graphic violence, although there is a certain beauty in the choreography of the fight and destroy scenes。 Then there are the psychological mind games and the reasoning of what constitutes morality。 The exploration of those who need Mr。 Nowhere Man and get to use that phone number as opposed to a government that has his number and sanctions his demise because it can’t control him。 While this was not one of my favorite plots it really doesn’t matter because I am in awe of the scripting of this story, the details, the descriptions, the snappy dialog, the raw emotions, the machinations, all of it。Thank you Minotaur Books and NetGalley for a copy。 。。。more

Well I did it, I finished the series and exceptt for an occasional lull, it was enjoyable from beginning to end。 Although X seems to have found peace with his various human connections, Hurwitz could easily have continued the saga with new cases just as Reacher does。 I understand the author is ready for new challenges, but I’ll bet his audience would continue to gobble up his stories, especially his relationships with Joey and Candy and Tommy。 Frankly Mia and Peter had lost their novelty but who Well I did it, I finished the series and exceptt for an occasional lull, it was enjoyable from beginning to end。 Although X seems to have found peace with his various human connections, Hurwitz could easily have continued the saga with new cases just as Reacher does。 I understand the author is ready for new challenges, but I’ll bet his audience would continue to gobble up his stories, especially his relationships with Joey and Candy and Tommy。 Frankly Mia and Peter had lost their novelty but who knows what the future might hold especially with X having walked away from a final confrontation with Luke Devine and the inevitable spillover with the president。 Let’s hope Hurwitz misses this guy as much as we do。 。。。more

Not "the Last Orphan"The latest Orphan X installment begins with Evan being ordered to remove a bad guy。 Not the usual "I need help"。 His nemesis this time is a powerful oligarch who has gotten too dangerous to the current POTUS。 Of course, mayhem ensues。My main criticism of the last book was an overabundance of drama。 The soap opera stuff has been toned down and I liked the result。 More bad guys and less smarm。 The story was good and it's about time we demonized the rich and powerful。I guess I Not "the Last Orphan"The latest Orphan X installment begins with Evan being ordered to remove a bad guy。 Not the usual "I need help"。 His nemesis this time is a powerful oligarch who has gotten too dangerous to the current POTUS。 Of course, mayhem ensues。My main criticism of the last book was an overabundance of drama。 The soap opera stuff has been toned down and I liked the result。 More bad guys and less smarm。 The story was good and it's about time we demonized the rich and powerful。I guess I was a little disappointed because of a few loose ends but overall a good。read。I thank NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy。 。。。more

I’ve loved this series from the start, and this eighth installment is no different。 If you’re a fan of Evan Smoak, you’ll remember that when he was a 12-year-old pipsqueak, he was plucked from an orphanage and trained to be a killing machine, learning all manner of fighting techniques, tactical evasions, and extensive use of weaponry so he could grow up to be an unofficial assassin for the U。S。 government。 Eventually he broke free and went deep underground, transforming himself into the Nowhere I’ve loved this series from the start, and this eighth installment is no different。 If you’re a fan of Evan Smoak, you’ll remember that when he was a 12-year-old pipsqueak, he was plucked from an orphanage and trained to be a killing machine, learning all manner of fighting techniques, tactical evasions, and extensive use of weaponry so he could grow up to be an unofficial assassin for the U。S。 government。 Eventually he broke free and went deep underground, transforming himself into the Nowhere Man, a way he could use his skills to help people in dire need。 The government was not happy about this career change and would do anything to stop him。 Though he managed to stay under the radar for a while, the government has found him and given him an ultimatum: Kill a powerful man of face the consequences。 Evan has a code to only kill if the person really deserves such a fate, so he investigates this man and finds a great deal of corruption that requires him to use his fighting skills。 Hurwitz goes into a lot of detail about these hand-to-hand combat sequences。 Now that Evan is a little older, he feels he’s just a little less sharp than he used to be。 Maybe because of his age, his knowledge of technology isn’t the greatest, so he relies on his 16-year-old ally Joey, who we met in book three。 She’s such a great character and foil to Evan。 Other members with unique skills also reappear in this book to help out。TRIGGER WARNING: One of the bad guys in this rapes women at every opportunity。 There isn’t a ton of detail about his villainous acts, but it’s more than I needed。Except for that cringe-inducing character, this is great escapist fun。 NetGalley provided an advance of this novel, which RELEASES FEBRUARY 14, 2023。 。。。more
