Summary

The stunning, standalone prequel to the New York Times bestselling The Priory of the Orange Tree

Tunuva Melim is a sister of the Priory。 For fifty years, she has trained to slay wyrms – but none have appeared since the Nameless One, and the younger generation is starting to question the Priory's purpose。

To the north, in the Queendom of Inys, Sabran the Ambitious has married the new King of Hróth, narrowly saving both realms from ruin。 Their daughter, Glorian, trails in their shadow – exactly where she wants to be。

The dragons of the East have slept for centuries。 Dumai has spent her life in a Seiikinese mountain temple, trying to wake the gods from their long slumber。 Now someone from her mother's past is coming to upend her fate。

When the Dreadmount erupts, bringing with it an age of terror and violence, these women must find the strength to protect humankind from a devastating threat。

Intricate and epic, Samantha Shannon sweeps readers back to the world of A Priory of the Orange Tree, showing us a course of events that shaped it for generations to come。

But I will try to give more than that。For me, A Day of Fallen Night hooked me from the start because even in the prologue so much was happening and I was here for it。 It is definitely a highly complex, far reaching political fantasy that has a world built through several different cities and countries with their own histories, religions, 'magic', and mythologies while also being very heavily character driven。 The balance between the world building, the characters, and the span of events taking place was so perfect that I never felt one overshadowed the other。 Not to mention in a book with a multitude of POVs I never once felt like I enjoyed one over the other as the stories were so perfectly intertwined and I loved each and every one of the characters so much I wanted more from each of them。Basically this book just proved to me even more how much I absolutely love Samantha's writing and storytelling。 And as a long time fan of Samantha's books I can attest that in A Day of Fallen Night she does what she has always done best and that is write an incredible story of women and their strengths and weakness and the effects of the world around them on them。 Dare I say she does it even better in this book than I have ever seen her do it before? A Day of Fallen Night at it's core specifically captures many stories of mothers (and daughters)。 I feel like I can't even put into words how a lot of their storylines made me feel from page one but damn they made me feel a lot。 Tunuva, Glorian, Dumai, Wulf, and so many of the others who were not exactly main pov characters but I felt like I learned so much about them despite that and loved them enough that I would love to ramble about all of them in this review but I can't because of spoilers。 Samantha truly wrote some unforgettable characters in this book and I will think of them always。 Honestly, I'm sitting here wishing for an extended extra epilogue because I need to know more about the after because I loved them so much。Before I forget to mention it, beyond just being a high political fantasy, A Day of Fallen Night is extremely action packed。 I won't give much details but there are a lot of dragons and other mysterious, scary creatures。But most of all something that is always a joy in Samantha's books is the fact that queerness is just a part of the world。 It's never questioned, it just is。 (And if you love ADOFN for this, her Bone Season series is the same。)I've gone off into a way longer review than I originally planned so I'll end with this - A Day of Fallen Night was actually everything I hoped it would be and more to the point where I didn't want it to end。 I actually need more and possibly a prequel to the prequel because I have theories。 I can't wait for everyone else to read this come February 28th! 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley and Bloomsbury for the Earc。A Day of Fallen Night is an amazing piece of high fantasy with good queer representation。 With 800+ pages, I found myself totally emersed in its world, learning the characters, geography, and politics。 As a reader who wasn't amazed by The Priory of the Orange Tree, I was very pleased to have read its prequel, which I connected more with the characters and plot。 The book itself follows four major characters; Glorian, Tuva, Dumai, and Wulf。 Each char Thank you NetGalley and Bloomsbury for the Earc。A Day of Fallen Night is an amazing piece of high fantasy with good queer representation。 With 800+ pages, I found myself totally emersed in its world, learning the characters, geography, and politics。 As a reader who wasn't amazed by The Priory of the Orange Tree, I was very pleased to have read its prequel, which I connected more with the characters and plot。 The book itself follows four major characters; Glorian, Tuva, Dumai, and Wulf。 Each character grew on me throughout, as i didn't immediately like any of them。 Glorian became my favorite, partly because the closeness of my own age to the characters, but mostly the development she undergoes, the choices she makes, and the way her story is spun。 Dumai comes in next, a fierce dragon-rider and godsinger who has the mobility to travel the whole world and defend the weak。 Overall, I think Dumai has the most interesting ending。 The world building was complex, but definitely worth the time to learn, acting as a major device for the plot, war, and politics。 I really liked the inclusion of dragons, wyverns, and wyrms, each with their own alliances and consciousness, and connections to the humans of the story。 The other fantastical animals also added to the story, acting as side characters。 Overall I really enjoyed A Day of Fallen Night with its prophecies and history。 Despite its length being intimidating, it is worth the time it takes to read, and with its huge cast, there is a character for anyone。 。。。more

It's rare that I read such a beast of a book, but the 880 pages flew by。 I had forgotten a lot of the details of The Priory of the Orange Tree and I was a bit distracted by trying to work out who or what I was meant to know about already。 It's an entirely new cast except for some of the dragons, I think。 Once all the new people are set out, it's a pacey and highly enjoyable tale, maybe a bit predictable in places, but perhaps that was info from the first book creeping through my subconscious。Ful It's rare that I read such a beast of a book, but the 880 pages flew by。 I had forgotten a lot of the details of The Priory of the Orange Tree and I was a bit distracted by trying to work out who or what I was meant to know about already。 It's an entirely new cast except for some of the dragons, I think。 Once all the new people are set out, it's a pacey and highly enjoyable tale, maybe a bit predictable in places, but perhaps that was info from the first book creeping through my subconscious。Full review to follow。 。。。more

Samantha Shannon has done it again!!!This is a sweeping epic that digs through the history of the world we grew to live in The Priory of the Orange Tree。 It cycles through three POVs, and not one of them is the weaker link。 If you wanted more dragons, you got ‘em。 If you wanted more action, you got it。 This really is another tour de force!

It's me, Hi。 Ok SOOOO it has been more than a hot second, but what better way to make it back into the Reading world then this。 So, as we all know Priory of the orange tree has such a special place in my heart, it helped me to discover myself and love me for me(the several crying photos popping up on my snapchat memories can attest to this)。 Therefore, when I saw that my ICONIC SLAY QUEEN SAM SHANNON was coming out with a prequel, I jabbed it on my bingo card。 This book revived my will to live, It's me, Hi。 Ok SOOOO it has been more than a hot second, but what better way to make it back into the Reading world then this。 So, as we all know Priory of the orange tree has such a special place in my heart, it helped me to discover myself and love me for me(the several crying photos popping up on my snapchat memories can attest to this)。 Therefore, when I saw that my ICONIC SLAY QUEEN SAM SHANNON was coming out with a prequel, I jabbed it on my bingo card。 This book revived my will to live, no it WAS my will to live。 Literally I kid u not, I was ready to sell my soul to get my hands on an arc of this, luckily, I didn't have to。 So with that said, HUGE GINORMOUS THANK YOU to my friends at Bloomsbury for sending this to me, literally you made my freaking life whole。 I had to sit with what I read for a moment because my insanity caused me to read it over the span of 3。 FRICKING。 DAYS。 We know this is a phatt book but like UGH IT WAS TOO GOOD AND SHORT AND OMG I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TO FEEL AT THE ENd。 The hardest part about getting arcs is not being able to talk about them, so I’m gonna try to talk about it to satiate this dire need to discuss it but in coded terms for spoilers bc I love u all。 OK ONTO THE REVIEWGeneral SHTUFF:So the book is prequel set before everything with Ead + Sabran, as part of the Roots of Chaos SERIES (YES I SAID SERIES WHAT!!!!!! LITERALLY MISS SHANNON IS MAKING MY HEART HAPPY)。 We follow 3 different main characters; Dumai in the East, Glorian in the West and Tunuva in the South。 These 3 characters truly carried and WERE the book。 I literally looked forward to every point of view, because there wasn’t one I was more interested in。 They all had their action paced compelling moments making me want MORE。 AND I STILL DO。 The short chapters were even fantastic because even tho they were like 2 pages, they had SO。 MUCH。 GOING。 ON。 With Fallen night, you’re never bored Even though they are in different parts of the world (making their stories feel even more their own) they do not stay sequestered in these areas。 I’m not going to reveal how this is, but it is unlike priory where they had their avengers endgame moment。 HOWEVER, I liked the incorporation of this connection。 It made for an interesting plot device, but also provided a sisterhood for each character。 This connection made them feel less alone in times when they needed it the most。 Magic amiright? Speaking of, the magic was insanely cool。 I keep thinking over and over in my head if I were a new reader which I would read first and I will say this; Reading priory first made me smile at certain character mentions like a certain dragon…but it also gave me knowledge on this book。 For example, Sterren and the whole nameless one thang。 Samantha Shannon does a fantastic job of briefing the reader on the whole nameless one schtick, however understand and reading POTOT before helped me grasp it even more。 So much so I audibly said “OH YEAH” throughout it。 However, if I was a new reader I would still be able to understand the background info provided。 The plot had excellent pacing and literally I can’t say this enough I had to force myself to put the book down at 5 in the morning it was so damn good。 Priory had a lot of themes like religion and magic that were built upon, however ADOFN built on it even more。 We truly got to see how Virtudom was the heart of Inys and what that entailed。 The beginning of the book talked about religious conquest which was a great realistic detail that added dimension to Virtudom。 In Priory, virtuyom was the guiding force but was not truly delved into aside from discussions of the “saint。” HOWEVER in ADOFN we get MORE!!! Glorian relies on the saint, but what intrigued me the most was her Questioning it。 That was important and showed the strength behind her character and the difference between her and her mother。 Speaking of, relationships between family members specifically mothers and daughters was insanely important in this book。 The beginning blurb of it all I didn’t understand in the beginning, however the end tied it together with a bow and tears (not a smile I was too busy sobbing)。 Glorian in particular has many struggles with her mother, and that really struck a chord with me。 This is because it added a really realistic and connectable element to the book and character herself that made me love Glorian even more。 Her just wanting her mothers validation and love is something many readers out there can relate to (myself included) And the mommy issues just slay。 THEY ADD SPICE。 Not only do we have the pot of daughters, we also have that of a mother which adds another dimension I enjoyed and wanted more of。 The addition and building blocks of these themes made the world just so vivid it truly felt like I was there。 Samantha Shannon does a fantastic job with her writing。 She leaves a lot up to the reader to interpret and insinuate which is really fun and refreshing。 And like I said before, her writing is so vivid in this book I truly felt I was there。Relationships…。ROMANCE BABES: In the book we have NOT ONE but TWO SAPPHIC MAIN STORY LINES。 We have to WLW and one MLM and I really loved it all。 While the romances are very sweet and endearing, they aren’t what makes the plot the plot。 They add a sparkle that I love and would die for。 Like literally one of them has me wanting to sleep on a highway。 Said romance did not go where I wanted, in fact it destroyed me inside however I feel like it wasn’t unnecessarily done? Idk I love Miss Shannon and trust her but bae broke me。With all that said, This is easily my favorite book of 2023。 I cried, Laughed Loved man did I love。 I appreciated every single character and def stole some of their personality traits along the way! PLEASE READ THIS BOOK AND MISS SHANNON I LOVE YOU PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER ONE 。。。more

I loved The Priory Of The Orange Tree, so was looking forward to reading this prequel! The author is a great storyteller as I could see from the previous book and this is a great story。 I feel like it has a pacing problem and can be frustrating at times。 I wish there were more actions in certain parts, especially in the second half, then it would have been 5 stars。 But I think this is a great prequel with some amazing characters, so it is worth a read!

From the stricken Glorian, princess and hostage to her country's religion, to the bold and decisive Dumai, dragon-rider, all the characters are interesting, layered, and easy to root for。 As an ancient adversary rises to lay waste to the world, alliances form, magic is challenged, and hearts are broken as the situation goes from bad to worse。 And the pacing! The pacing! Not a moment dragged。 I basically spent the last two hours sobbing my eyes out as the characters I had come to love over the last few weeks struggled to survive horrific situations。 I feel like I'm babbling。 I LOVED this book。 I'm going to sing this book from the heavens。 If you enjoyed the Priory at all, you'll love this one。 It's more complex, more layered, with even more likeable characters than Priory - a top tier fantasy masterpiece。 。。。more
