Summary

An international bestseller and one of The Times' "Top 50 Novels Published in the 21st Century," Claire Keegan's piercing contemporary classic Foster is a heartbreaking story of childhood, loss, and love; now released as a standalone book for the first time ever in the US

It is a hot summer in rural Ireland。 A child is taken by her father to live with relatives on a farm, not knowing when or if she will be brought home again。 In the Kinsellas' house, she finds an affection and warmth she has not known and slowly, in their care, begins to blossom。 But there is something unspoken in this new household--where everything is so well tended to--and this summer must soon come to an end。

Winner of the prestigious Davy Byrnes Prize and first published in the New Yorker, Claire Keegan's Foster has sold over 120,000 copies in the UK and Ireland, where it is also required reading in schools。 A story of astonishing emotional depth now expanded and newly revised in a standalone edition, Foster showcases Claire Keegan's great talent and cements her reputation as one of our most important and prodigious storytellers。

A girl with many siblings is taken to a couple to stay while her real mother has another new child。 I actually wonder about this, the sensible thing would be to have her stay and help mother with the new baby。 Anyway, she is treated wonderfully and when she is to return, no one really wants that to happen。 A sweet story。

This story is lovely。 The life in this setting was really well described。 And I liked the fact that it's not too long。 This story is lovely。 The life in this setting was really well described。 And I liked the fact that it's not too long。 。。。more

Succinct, beautifully written story。 An excellent start for 2023 reading, although the bar’s been set very high!

What a beautiful novella。 How do some writers manage to pack so much emotion into such few pages, when others cannot do the same in 400 pages? IBR friends, this one meets the novella prompt, and I am also going to use it for the cover I detest prompt, because ugh。

Beautiful, moving, haunting。 Loved it!

A beautiful story about what family love can be。 My first Claire Keegan but definitely will not be my last。

Clare Garrison

Heartbreakingly beautiful, I loved this as much as Small Things Like These and can’t wait to read more Claire Keegan。

Good things do come in small packages。 Less than 100 pages of pure gold。 She tells a story of kindness and love, growing and giving。 I love this book。

A wonderful novella, set in Ireland, told beautifully from a child's point of view。 The characters are vividly drawn in this touching story of a child's summer with family she didn't previously know。 A wonderful novella, set in Ireland, told beautifully from a child's point of view。 The characters are vividly drawn in this touching story of a child's summer with family she didn't previously know。 。。。more

Barnperspektiv på ett till synes enkelt, men djupt berörande sätt。

Listening to Aoife McMahon narrate this endearing story is such a pleasure! I started the audiobook at 1am setting a timer for 30 minutes。 Haha, such a mistake。 After 30 minutes, wide awake still, I was blissfully reading the ebook, frequently missing McMahon's voice (especially when Edna was telling things), switching back eventually。Foster is a rare book of astonishing beauty and clarity。 The atmosphere pulls you right in and you wouldn't want to come out at all。 Looking forward to read Small Listening to Aoife McMahon narrate this endearing story is such a pleasure! Claire Keegan is a master!!! I have no idea how she manages to pack so much humanity and life into such short books。 I was a huge fan Small Things Like These, but Foster took her writing to a whole new level for me。 Absolute perfection!!!!

Short, sweet & perfect。

Kathi

A sad but beautiful short story who learns about being loved when she goes to live with her mothers sister for the summer。 She then has to return to her sad home。

Beautiful。 Simple。 Complex。 Bittersweet。 Sad。 I will be reading more of this author。

This year I’m trying to avoid the ‘hyped’ books I hear about on the internet。 But this one sounded good, is short, and was just sitting there on the library shelf。 I’m so glad I picked it up。 There is more beautiful emotion packed into its 92 pages than I’d thought there could be。 By page 8 I knew I needed to go to the back room and devour this book in one go。 I was right。 It’s a masterpiece。

I didn’t…。get it? Sweet, very well-drawn characters but too simplistic of a story for me。 Or did I miss something?

Emily Stow

A heart warming short story。

A beautiful novella, perfect in every way。
