Great storyline。 I did not want to put it down, but I did not want to finish either。 I want to savor the contents of the graphic novel。 The art is beautiful。

Snyder and Capullo are my favorite Batman creative team ever, and LKOE is a great example why。 Snyder has such a respect for the Batman mythos; so much respect in fact, that he's willing to push them to their limit, to get weird, to experiment, to trust that the elastic won't break no matter how far you push it。 Capullo's artwork is iconic, slick in its harsh lines and perfectly balanced in character design, not too realistic and not too fantastical。 The storyline itself is a fun, Elseworlds "la Snyder and Capullo are my favorite Batman creative team ever, and LKOE is a great example why。 Snyder has such a respect for the Batman mythos; so much respect in fact, that he's willing to push them to their limit, to get weird, to experiment, to trust that the elastic won't break no matter how far you push it。 Capullo's artwork is iconic, slick in its harsh lines and perfectly balanced in character design, not too realistic and not too fantastical。 The storyline itself is a fun, Elseworlds "last Batman story ever" that really plays with all the conventions and symbolism Snyder is known for and goes epic in scope。 Think "Old Man Logan" but much weirder and less needlessly cruel。 Does it get a little kooky and confusing at times? A little bit。。。 and honestly, Batman trusting Joker so quickly rubbed me the wrong way。 Snyder is just such a Batman geek。 He just trusts that you will pick up on all the little breadcrumbs he lays out, and trust him for the ride; and by the end, he earns that trust。 Excellent stuff。 I would definitely recommend reading Snyder/Capullo's New 52 Batman run first, however。 。。。more

I loved this。 I haven't read a ton of newer Batman, so I'm totally down for some Elseworlds flavor here, and I love it when comics get a bit more edgy, adding swears and gore。 I loved this。 I haven't read a ton of newer Batman, so I'm totally down for some Elseworlds flavor here, and I love it when comics get a bit more edgy, adding swears and gore。 。。。more

When Scott Snyder began his run on Batman, Grant Morrison advised him to come up with a beginning and end for his particular take on the character。 It was advice that helped fuel Snyder's decade-long run across Detective Comics and the titular Batman book that became the flagship title of the New 52。 We've seen Snyder's origin for the character over the course of his 52-issue run with artist Greg Capullo, and now with Last Knight on Earth we see the end。Like Old Man Logan, Last Knight on Earth s When Scott Snyder began his run on Batman, Grant Morrison advised him to come up with a beginning and end for his particular take on the character。 It was advice that helped fuel Snyder's decade-long run across Detective Comics and the titular Batman book that became the flagship title of the New 52。 We've seen Snyder's origin for the character over the course of his 52-issue run with artist Greg Capullo, and now with Last Knight on Earth we see the end。Like Old Man Logan, Last Knight on Earth sees Batman journey across a post-apocalyptic hellscape of DC Comics's ruined Earth, the last surviving hero in a world where evil has reined supreme and the heroes were utterly destroyed or forced into hiding。 Batman hopes to discover some ever-lasting remnants of good, though, and at the outset his only ally is his greatest enemy - The Joker。 Or at least the head of The Joker, encased in, and kept sentient, by a high-tech jar of some sort。Snyder closes out his take on Batman by bringing many of the elements he's created over the duration of his run full-circle。 We see an evolution of his Court of Owls, Bruce's cloning machine that ensures every generation has a Batman, and the birth of a fresh dynamic between Batman and The Joker that plays on the themes of their relationship as defined in Death of a Family and subsequent story arcs。Last Knight on Earth also leans heavily into the weird, even beyond the Futurama-esque head in a jar。 This book's opening segment lays the groundwork for Batman's last case and then detours into an alternate reality, The Prisoner-like headtrip, before finally shifting gears into the aftermath of a superhero apocalypse。 Along the way, Snyder's story teeters between the hopelessly nihilistic and the bright promise of a future built on the ashes of what came before。Greg Capullo's artwork is as good as ever, and his detailed panels are a real joy to behold and study。 I love his pencil work and camera positioning, and it's all gorgeously colored by FCO Plascencia。 The book's opening pages, in which Batman discover a lone boy in Crime Alley beneath a street lamp in the middle of a storm, are dynamically rendered with an ethereal glow and deep shadows。 I also really loved the depiction of the speed force storm in the second issue, where Capullo really nails the horrifying reveal of what seethes at the center of this out of control tornado。 Snyder's strange script gives Capullo plenty of awesome material to flex his considerable creative muscles with。 。。。more

The artwork by superstar Greg Capullo saves this from being a total waste of time, but Scott Snyder is treading Tom King territory here, delivering an 'Elseworlds' Batman tale that is disjointed, pointless and, worst of all, boring。 It starts out okay but quickly goes off the rails, with Batman traversing some weird Mad-Max style version of the DC universe that's being lorded over by a new super-villain called Omega。 This is as dull as it sounds and it's only Capullo's awesome artwork that provi The artwork by superstar Greg Capullo saves this from being a total waste of time, but Scott Snyder is treading Tom King territory here, delivering an 'Elseworlds' Batman tale that is disjointed, pointless and, worst of all, boring。 It starts out okay but quickly goes off the rails, with Batman traversing some weird Mad-Max style version of the DC universe that's being lorded over by a new super-villain called Omega。 This is as dull as it sounds and it's only Capullo's awesome artwork that provides any glimmer of entertainment。 Snyder's run on Batman will go down as one of the finest in the character's storied history, but 'Last Knight' is him running on fumes, all of out ideas and just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks。 If you're a fan of Capullo's artwork there's a lot to like here, but don't expect a good story to go along with it。 。。。more

No more Snyder for me。 I can't take it。 From what I've heard it seems like he was great at one time, and I really would like to read Court of Owls, but I can't risk getting bit this bad a third time。 Not after The Batman Who Laughs and now this book。This is drivel folks。 I mean what are we doing here? Both Snyder books I've read have this horrid combination where it feels like a 15-year-old outlined the plot and then a writer who is way too impressed with himself does the rest。 The plot is so scatterbrained and nonsensical but you're also treated to characters that talk a little too much and way too obtusely。 It all adds up to a galaxy-brained writer who is ultimately just "taking the piss"。I'm starting to get the impression that DC likes Snyder because he comes up with a lot of silly ideas that can lead to merchandise。 The Batman Who Laughs was atrocious, but the character looks kind of cool and DC has sold a ton of plastic crap since he was introduced。 This book has a good bit of that going on as well。 The story sucks and the character designs make little sense, but we can make some of them into a toy! Genius!Anyways, here we go: Why is the Joker's head in a jar and why would Batman befriend and carry him around? Why does the Joker behave like the Joker except when he's the narrator and speaks like a completely normal person? Did he become normal after the story ended? If so how is that interesting and why would anyone care? Why does the story begin with a simple but gripping premise and then immediately go off the rails to some end of the world, fight for the universe plot? Why do we have to involve just about every DC character that anyone has ever heard of? I could go on and on。 This is so similar to The Batman Who Laughs in the worst ways。 Everything tries to be so epic yet none of it makes sense and just ends up being otherworldly nonsense。 It's the worst of comics put into a shiny, contemporary package: Too many characters。 Traveling to random alternate dimensions (or something)。 A brand new villain who is mostly in the shadows and therefore, can't bother us to care about him。 Characters who might as well be speaking in tongues because they're explaining some cosmic BS that just reads as nonsense, because it is。Two terrible stories for me now from this writer。 Maybe someday I'll run into someone who can loan me Court of Owls, or maybe I'll find it in a thrift store。 Otherwise I can't stand this guy anymore。 Boring and derivative is one thing。 That I can handle, but not just outright incoherence mixed with the assumption that you're doing something tremendous。 Yeah, Capullo's art is very good。 I really really like it, but an awesome sketch of a dog turd on fire can only take you so far。 。。。more

I'm thinking 2。5 stars so I'll round up to 3。There are some really good things in this collection: Joker, a young Bruce Wayne, and an interesting premise。 But when I finished reading it, I was happier to move to something else than dwell on what I just read。 Get it on sale or wait for it to show up on Prime for free。 I'm thinking 2。5 stars so I'll round up to 3。There are some really good things in this collection: Joker, a young Bruce Wayne, and an interesting premise。 But when I finished reading it, I was happier to move to something else than dwell on what I just read。 Get it on sale or wait for it to show up on Prime for free。 。。。more

Ok, Batman: Last Knight on Earth was ok as a closure for the N52 run by Snyder/Greg but the story was a choice, it jumped from one point to another and the end was very abrupt。All in all it was a good story but they could have included this one as the last volume/arc for their run back in 2015/16。

Batman becomes his own worst enemy。 A lot of heroes die and Joker gains a conscience。 All this and more happen in what is ultimately a story I found just okay。 The weird thing is I really got into Batman because of Snyder & Capullo's epic run。 But really feel that Snyder's storytelling lately is best fit for horror or Elseworlds style DC books。 The truth is as great as the Court of the Owls and Death of the family arcs were in Snyder's early Batman run there are cracks in his story crafting armo Batman becomes his own worst enemy。 A lot of heroes die and Joker gains a conscience。 All this and more happen in what is ultimately a story I found just okay。 The weird thing is I really got into Batman because of Snyder & Capullo's epic run。 But really feel that Snyder's storytelling lately is best fit for horror or Elseworlds style DC books。 The truth is as great as the Court of the Owls and Death of the family arcs were in Snyder's early Batman run there are cracks in his story crafting armor。 Perhaps the best thing about this book is that it is out of the main continuity。 I just could connect to this book like Snyder's earlier work。 It is a possibility that my tastes have changed from the kind of superhero tales I want to read。 I am currently collecting Death Metal which is suppose to be the end of the current DC universe that is being overseen by Snyder。 There is a common thread that this book and Scott's current work have I common, they are nihilistic and murky in their view on superheroes。 Make no mistake this is a dark story that sees the heroes doing as much evil as your supervillains。 Here is the debate: Do you want more darkness in your superhero books or do you want more heroics & optimism? The real star of this book is Capullo's artwork。 Capullo might be one of the greatest artists doing comics today。 The visuals in this book really pop & made this a more exciting read。 The colors were done well also。 Ultimately it is the story and plot that didn't connect with me and make this a five-star read。 This is an Elseworlds tale and I am glad this has not come anywhere near the main continuity。 I found the joker to be a bit annoying in this book although some of the humor brought a little levity to the wtf moments in this book。 I totally agree with many readers that some of the pacing and plot threads did not add up。 There were things that just happen that did not have a good setup。 Surprisingly the twist on the identity of the main villain, Omega, was too predictable。 Omega's motivations did not make any sense and without spoiling anything made our hero's journey pointless。 Scott does have some good ideas here, like the idea of Bruce being convinced that his time as Batman was a delusion。 The opening of this book was really good but Snyder undercut his own story by veering off into a crazy direction。 This book sealed the deal for me that his take on Batman is done。 DC needs to get back to a more detective and street-level approach to the character。 What makes Batman work is that he is a mortal man just trying to make a difference in his city。 We need a break from the cosmic, cloning, and cataclysmic events Batman。 Last Knight on Earth was what I expected but that's okay。 Snyder's imagination and ideas are always risky。 Sometimes they pay off and you get great books like Batman, Volume 1: The Court of Owls, Batman: The Black Mirror, Swamp Thing, Volume 1: Raise Them Bones & Batman, Volume 4: Zero Year: Secret City。 But just like Death Metal I ultimately found this book to be, Meh。 It's not great but its just okay。 。。。more

Once upon a time I thought comics couldn't get more nihilistic and self-indulgent than Old Man Logan。 But Last Knight on Earth says 'Hold My Beer'。 Once upon a time I thought I'd never read a Batman story so bad it made me nostalgic for Dark Knight II or All Star Batman and Robin。 To make things worse, Last Knight on Earth had the makings of a good story that just sort of looses its way。 I think my problem with this story, and most of the DC Black Label Material I've read in general, is that it Once upon a time I thought comics couldn't get more nihilistic and self-indulgent than Old Man Logan。 But Last Knight on Earth says 'Hold My Beer'。 Once upon a time I thought I'd never read a Batman story so bad it made me nostalgic for Dark Knight II or All Star Batman and Robin。 To make things worse, Last Knight on Earth had the makings of a good story that just sort of looses its way。 I think my problem with this story, and most of the DC Black Label Material I've read in general, is that it is trying to do adult material like its predecessor Vertigo did, only without doing it the way most Vertigo titles did it。 Mature stories of science fiction does not mean edge lord。 This story is: 'See, this is a Batman story for adults because Joker says the word shit and we own up to Batman being at least a bit fascist。' Whereas a real mature story would have gotten into the roots of why and whether that tendency was there before the triggering event。Another thing that is sad is that this was hyped as (potentially) Scott Snyder's last Batman story。。。 at least for the time being。 The thing, is if this was supposed to be his finale, it seems like a load off that he's off the Batbooks。 I like most of his Batman work up until around Dark Knights/Dark Multiverse。 And then it just somehow went bleah overnight。 It became shock for the sake of shock which was something I wasn't a fan of when it became a super big thing to do in the 90s and have only grown less patient with in the last 20 years。 If Dennis O'Neil is the height of Batman。。。。 this story is the Marianas trench of Batman。 Don't look at it, don't read it。 Don't even use it for toilet paper。 It is so bad it doesn't even deserve the same treatment as All-Star Batman and Robin, Batman Fortunate Son or Batman Jazz。 。。。more
