Summary

Thief!

When Phil sees another kid wearing his brother's jacket, he assumes the jacket was stolen。 It turns out he was wrong, and Phil has to ask himself the question: Would he have made the same assumption if the boy wearing the jacket hadn't been African American? And that question leads to others that reveal some unsettling truths about Phil's neighborhood, his family, and even himself。

I really loved this book and how it handled race。 I felt like I had the same questions and the same lack of awareness as a kid。 I would highly recommend this book to any kid。 It's not preachy in any sense, and lets you wonder if you might be racist。 I really loved this book and how it handled race。 I felt like I had the same questions and the same lack of awareness as a kid。 I would highly recommend this book to any kid。 It's not preachy in any sense, and lets you wonder if you might be racist。 。。。more

CRT at its finest。 I read this with my multicultural class。 They were disgusted and embarrassed by the demonizing of a white kid throughout most of the story。 Pass on this one。

I liked the idea of story。 But the writing style just kind of boring。

Phil is taking his brother's lunch money to him when he sees what he thinks is his brother's jacket on another boy; the boy is black and Phil is white。 Afterwards, when everything is straightened out, Phil begins to think about whether he is prejudiced or not and does something about it。 Phil is taking his brother's lunch money to him when he sees what he thinks is his brother's jacket on another boy; the boy is black and Phil is white。 Afterwards, when everything is straightened out, Phil begins to think about whether he is prejudiced or not and does something about it。 。。。more

I think this is a great book for younger ages to start some conversations。 However, I wish there would be more information to help students with the same questions that the main character is struggling with。 Regardless, I am glad there are books at this level that discuss racism and prejudice。

My feelings are complicated on this one。 I appreciate Clement's attempt to address hidden bias and white privilege but the book seems to ramble。 Upper elementary students would needed to be guided very carefully, as they begin to examine their own biases or they might come to the same conclusions as prejudiced role model characters do in this book。 My feelings are complicated on this one。 I appreciate Clement's attempt to address hidden bias and white privilege but the book seems to ramble。 Upper elementary students would needed to be guided very carefully, as they begin to examine their own biases or they might come to the same conclusions as prejudiced role model characters do in this book。 。。。more

Maybe not my first choice on the topic of race relations, but simple and gives room for deeper discussion。

As Phil is looking for his brother to deliver his forgotten lunch money, he sees an African-American boy wearing his brother's jacket and thinks he stole it。 After hearing the explanation of how the boy got the jacket while in the principal's office, Phil realizes that he is prejudiced and begins to notice things he never did before。 The story in The Jacket isn't long or involved, but it delivers a powerful message。 Phil begins to see things through different eyes, making him realize things abou As Phil is looking for his brother to deliver his forgotten lunch money, he sees an African-American boy wearing his brother's jacket and thinks he stole it。 After hearing the explanation of how the boy got the jacket while in the principal's office, Phil realizes that he is prejudiced and begins to notice things he never did before。 The story in The Jacket isn't long or involved, but it delivers a powerful message。 Phil begins to see things through different eyes, making him realize things about his home and family that he never knew before。 The story isn't particularly well written or overly dramatized, but it does include an important theme。 Overall this is a short book, but includes a valuable lesson。 。。。more

I really appreciated this book。 This is a great book to read together as a family and talk about racism and the subtle ways it permeates the white culture。 Phil and Daniel come to blows over the ownership of a jacket which starts the evaluation gears rolling in Phil’s head regarding the racial overtones of his actions。 I appreciated the author’s approach to this area of tension in our society。 Blatant racism is fairly easy to recognize, but some attitudes are hidden within our homes, our neighbo I really appreciated this book。 This is a great book to read together as a family and talk about racism and the subtle ways it permeates the white culture。 Phil and Daniel come to blows over the ownership of a jacket which starts the evaluation gears rolling in Phil’s head regarding the racial overtones of his actions。 I appreciated the author’s approach to this area of tension in our society。 Blatant racism is fairly easy to recognize, but some attitudes are hidden within our homes, our neighborhoods, and our expectations。 Check out this short book with a big message。 。。。more

Main character, Phil, questions himself about being prejudice when he sees a young black boy, Daniel, wearing his old jacket。 He assumes that Daniel must have stolen it, but why does Phil automatically assume that? This event causes Phil to question and identify why he has this attitude。 He analyzes his neighborhood, friends, teammates, parents, and even bus rides to his house。 This is realistic fiction and is a great book to start a discussion with students from 4th grade and up。

This is a book my 5th graders are reading。 It was written in 2003 but very timely to the national conversation。 What a great way to have a discussion with kids about unconscious bias and societal divides that we can be more aware of。

Simply put, this book is a book about a boy (Phil) who starts to recognize the racial inequality in his life after he has an argument with another boy (Daniel) about a jacket。 The focus is more on Phil's many small realizations about racial injustice as opposed to action (although there is a some of that towards the end of the book)。Is this book perfect? No。 It's short, so there's not enough room here to get into much depth。 The ending resolution between the boys is a little too neatly done。 A l Simply put, this book is a book about a boy (Phil) who starts to recognize the racial inequality in his life after he has an argument with another boy (Daniel) about a jacket。 The focus is more on Phil's many small realizations about racial injustice as opposed to action (although there is a some of that towards the end of the book)。Is this book perfect? Very timely story about racial prejudice and two boys who come to understand each other a little better。 A quick read with lots of points for discussion with children in a classroom or home。 The subject matter is handled in a fairly light manner。 I do wish the mother had not been so dismissive and the father so prejudiced himself, but again thus can bring up discussion points about developing ideas and belief systems separate from those you were raised with。

Okay。。 had to sit on what I thought of this one。 I am very glad we have children's literature that discusses topics like racial prejudice such as this one。 I did think there were a lot of holes left (comments that were made but not explained?) that COULD be harmful, but could also lead to a good discussion of race and privilege。 I think a great book club selection for young readers to discuss - but I wouldn't want to leave my (hypothetical) child alone to read and digest without others。 Okay。。 had to sit on what I thought of this one。 I am very glad we have children's literature that discusses topics like racial prejudice such as this one。 I did think there were a lot of holes left (comments that were made but not explained?) that COULD be harmful, but could also lead to a good discussion of race and privilege。 I think a great book club selection for young readers to discuss - but I wouldn't want to leave my (hypothetical) child alone to read and digest without others。 。。。more

This high interest, low reading level (high/lo) book dealt with issues I haven't seen in other high low books。 It follows a 6th grader who is coming to realize that he is prejudiced and that he has privilege。 I was pleasantly surprised by this short book and will be recommending it to my students。 This high interest, low reading level (high/lo) book dealt with issues I haven't seen in other high low books。 It follows a 6th grader who is coming to realize that he is prejudiced and that he has privilege。 I was pleasantly surprised by this short book and will be recommending it to my students。 。。。more

As I was reading this book I even dreamed about this book that night。 I had a dream I realized I was just like Phil, and so I started talking to someone about it, and the conversation wasn't going well, because they thought I was right if I had to bring it up and discuss it。 I think if we have the opportunity, we all kind of go through this, either on our own or because of what someone says that might make us think about it。 But I think that's a good thing too。 This was a to-the-point, super-qui As I was reading this book I even dreamed about this book that night。 I had a dream I realized I was just like Phil, and so I started talking to someone about it, and the conversation wasn't going well, because they thought I was right if I had to bring it up and discuss it。 I think if we have the opportunity, we all kind of go through this, either on our own or because of what someone says that might make us think about it。 But I think that's a good thing too。 This was a to-the-point, super-quick read with some quotes I'll be adding to my "Keepers" book。 Here they are: Daniel wasn't looking for more words。 Phil had already said he was sorry。 Twice。 Because sometimes sorry has to be said twice。 Sometimes even more。 And Phil wasn't waiting for Daniel to say thanks。 Because it wasn't needed。 It was understood。" 。。。more

So had to quick read something tonight as its been hectic and I have not been reading as much。。this one was recommended to me from my darling colleague and amazing school librarian as something to spark discussion as an intriguing and fast read to make kids question themselves and how they see others。。。。the book begins with a white boy Phil accosting a black classmate Daniel for wearing a jacket he knows is his。 As the truth about the jacket comes out so does Phil's feelings towards black people, his ignorance on how persons from opposite races live and how a persons' surroundings can influence how they think。。Phil feels embarassed for how he reacted and begins to question if he is prejudiced and why no one who looks like Daniel lives by him and once he discovers how Daniel lives and how wrong he was it is truly a teachable moment on how to value each other and show understanding。。It was heartwarming and I can see students hanging on chapters dying to know what happens and even guessing on what they would do and why。。I can see this giving both the mirror and window to our children to see inside the lives of people who are different。。It seemed authentic even down to the dial-up internet reference LOL oh wow and using reverse phone number look up for the address。。it was dated for sure but enjoyable。 。。。more
