He saw what you did。 He knows who you are。。。

From the New York Times bestselling author of Pieces of Her and The Silent Wife, an electrifying standalone thriller。

AN ORDINARY LIFE。。。

Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life。 She's an up-and-coming defense attorney at a prestigious law firm in Atlanta, would do anything for her sixteen-year-old daughter Maddy, and is managing to successfully coparent through a pandemic after an amicable separation from her husband Walter。

HIDES A DEVASTATING PAST。。。

But Leigh's ordinary life masks a childhood no one should have to endure 。。。 a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and ultimately destroyed by a brutal act of violence。

BUT NOW THE PAST IS CATCHING UP。。。

On a Sunday night at her daughter's school play, she gets a call from one of the firm's partners who wants Leigh to come on board to defend a wealthy man accused of multiple counts of rape。 Though wary of the case, it becomes apparent she doesn't have much choice if she wants to keep her job。 They're scheduled to go to trial in one week。 When she meets the accused face-to-face, she realizes that it's no coincidence that he's specifically asked for her to represent him。 She knows him。 And he knows her。 More to the point, he may know what happened over twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades avoiding her past。

AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT。

Suddenly she has a lot more to lose than this case。 The only person who can help is her younger, estranged sister Callie--the last person Leigh would ever want to drag into this after all they've been through。 But with the life-shattering truth in danger of being revealed, she has no choice。。。

"A high-stakes thriller 。 。 。 Her heroines are believable, flawed and courageous。" -OYINKAN BRAITHWAITE

There were twists and turns in the plot, but I could definitely do with less graphic descriptions of murders, and it could have been 100 pages less since I didn't need such an in depth description of drugs and effects on addicts in several different places throughout the book。 Second book I've read by Slaughter, so assume the graphic and sadistic murder descriptions are her style。 There were twists and turns in the plot, but I could definitely do with less graphic descriptions of murders, and it could have been 100 pages less since I didn't need such an in depth description of drugs and effects on addicts in several different places throughout the book。 Second book I've read by Slaughter, so assume the graphic and sadistic murder descriptions are her style。 。。。more

4。5 ⭐I'm between 4-4。5⭐ on this one。 It's so good, Karin Slaughter is a phenomenal writer and this gritty legal thriller is no exception to her great talent。Leigh and Calli are sisters, both trying to keep it together in a world that's living with the fallout of the pandemic。 Calli is an addict。 Leigh is a defense attorney with a new client - a wealthy man accused of raping several women。 The man isn't a stranger and it's not a coincidence that Leigh is his chosen defender。 Leigh and Calli's tra 4。5 ⭐I'm between 4-4。5⭐ on this one。 It's so good, Karin Slaughter is a phenomenal writer and this gritty legal thriller is no exception to her great talent。Leigh and Calli are sisters, both trying to keep it together in a world that's living with the fallout of the pandemic。 Calli is an addict。 Leigh is a defense attorney with a new client - a wealthy man accused of raping several women。 The man isn't a stranger and it's not a coincidence that Leigh is his chosen defender。 Leigh and Calli's tragic childhood is one they'll have to face, including the things they had to do to survive。Slaughter knows how to write sisters。 She knows how to write addiction。 She knows how to write evil POS'。 The woman will make you feel。 I felt so many emotions while reading this book (or listened, narrated by Kathleen Early) - I felt for Calli and her addictions, for Leigh trying to live through the guilt that has plagued her life。 There's a certain level of guilt sisters hold onto for each other, especially older ones。 I connect to that as the oldest of three sisters。As always with this author, look up trigger warnings。 It's a tough read。-0。5 because I just don't want to read about the pandemic, we all lived it and I don't care to relive quite yet。 However - Slaughter's author's note does a great job of explaining why she included it, which I appreciated。“Your relationship with a person doesn’t end when they die。 It only gets stronger。” He winked at her。 “Mostly because they’re not there to tell you that you’re wrong。” 。。。more

Another fantastic hearty thriller from Karin!! Loved the bond between the sisters and how real Karin makes her characters。 Only reason for the 4 and not 5 star is because… for as intense as the entire book was。。 the ending seemed。。 a little lack luster。 Still great ending but I wanted MORE!!!

It took a while to finish this one, and I'm not sure that I would have read anything by this author if it was my first。 We hear about the awful way that some people are forced to live in reality, and when I read a book of fiction, I don't want it glaring me in the face with the turn of every page。 However, I did finish the book, and there were some good parts that were not entirely bad, but this is one that I would not recommend to those that don't want to be reminded of the seedier side of life It took a while to finish this one, and I'm not sure that I would have read anything by this author if it was my first。 We hear about the awful way that some people are forced to live in reality, and when I read a book of fiction, I don't want it glaring me in the face with the turn of every page。 However, I did finish the book, and there were some good parts that were not entirely bad, but this is one that I would not recommend to those that don't want to be reminded of the seedier side of life on a daily basis。 。。。more

Wow。 This book is incredibly heavy, dense, dark and gritty。 It talks about rape so much that I became numb to it。 But what an ending。 I nearly cried twice and that never happens。 So good。

Love this! Karin is amazing!

I'm still not a big fan of Karin Slaughter's books but a score of 2 "it was OK" seems about right。 The story is about 2 sisters who had been abused when they were teens and babysitting, and what happens 20 years later when they are confronted with their past in adult life。 The story is on the one hand fast paced, but also goes into too much details of certain situations, including drug addiction。 I'm still not a big fan of Karin Slaughter's books but a score of 2 "it was OK" seems about right。 The story is about 2 sisters who had been abused when they were teens and babysitting, and what happens 20 years later when they are confronted with their past in adult life。 The story is on the one hand fast paced, but also goes into too much details of certain situations, including drug addiction。 。。。more

"False Witness" was like the little sister of "Pretty Girls"。 Both of them have really similar vibes。 In other words, it was just a typical Karin Slaughter book。"If you want to measure the height of a mountain, the hardest part isn’t finding the peak, it’s figuring out where the bottom starts。" Violence, murder, rape, sabotage, suicide, abuse, addiction - name every dark and disturbing things you can think of and this book has them all。 So, of course, Karin Slaughter's writing is not for everyone "False Witness" was like the little sister of "Pretty Girls"。 Both of them have really similar vibes。 In other words, it was just a typical Karin Slaughter book。"If you want to measure the height of a mountain, the hardest part isn’t finding the peak, it’s figuring out where the bottom starts。" Violence, murder, rape, sabotage, suicide, abuse, addiction - name every dark and disturbing things you can think of and this book has them all。 So, of course, Karin Slaughter's writing is not for everyone。 But I personally am a fan of her previous works。 I had high expectations from this book。 Unfortunately, it failed to meet my expectations。 This book was literally a tome of 450+ pages。 Lots of parts and scenes felt unnecessary。 Specially, in the middle, the book dragged a lot。 Few events felt somewhat repetitive to me。 Also the numerous and quite often unnecessary references to Covid 19 detracted my attention from the story and plot。 The ending was predictable。 So many questions were left unanswered。 I personally thought that the first chapter was the best chapter of the book。 It had an unexpected twist, something I didn't saw coming。 The rest of the book felt boring in comparison。 "That was how it was with abusive parents。 They only remembered the good times and you only remembered the bad。" I liked the characters。 At the heart of this book is the relationship between Leigh and Callie, two sisters who grew up in poverty by a neglectful mother and ended up sharing a role in a violent crime。 I loved their bonding。 That's the only thing I actually loved in this book。 "Your relationship with a person doesn’t end when they die。 It only gets stronger。” He winked at her。 “Mostly because they’re not there to tell you that you’re wrong。" All in, this wasn't a favourite。 I enjoyed it just fine。 However, it failed to deliver despite having great potential。 If you want to read something from the author, just go for "Pretty Girls" or "The Good Daughter"。 Although, those books are much darker than this one, they are also a lot better。。。。。 。。。more

Karin Slaughter simply never fails

Dark doesn’t even begin to describe Karin Slaughter’s thrillers, and this one is no exception。 I respect the way she portrayed trauma through both of the sisters’ POV。 The whole thing read like an in depth criminal minds episode, complete with a clear moral/lesson at the end。 Some parts were almost too gruesome to get through, but I’m glad I stuck it out。

Another gripping Karin Slaughter book。 Distressing plot line but gripping。 Good characterisation and lots of twists and turns。

The goriest and most graphic thriller I've read in awhile, at times hard to stomach。 But the twists and the author's deep exploration of these like sisterhood, trauma, and addiction kept me reading。 I just need to go read something light and fun now。 The goriest and most graphic thriller I've read in awhile, at times hard to stomach。 But the twists and the author's deep exploration of these like sisterhood, trauma, and addiction kept me reading。 I just need to go read something light and fun now。 。。。more

I’m definitely in the minority here, but this novel was just not for me。 I felt that it was slow and predictable。 I’m a little disappointed after the reviews I had seen, but maybe I’m just the odd one out on this one。

Karin Slaughter does it again。 This is the second book that I've read by her and I'm quickly becoming a huge fan。 I loved every second of this, the only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because the constant mention of covid。 I did see that she started to time stamp her books with what was going on in the world, but I thought it was a little excessive。 I loved Calli and wish her ending was different。 But good on Leigh for her character devolvement throughout the book, I did enjoy that。 Karin Slaughter does it again。 This is the second book that I've read by her and I'm quickly becoming a huge fan。 I loved every second of this, the only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because the constant mention of covid。 I did see that she started to time stamp her books with what was going on in the world, but I thought it was a little excessive。 I loved Calli and wish her ending was different。 But good on Leigh for her character devolvement throughout the book, I did enjoy that。 。。。more

Why the hell did it take me so long to read this。 I sobbed literal tears。 Callie and Harleys story shattered me。 The highs and the lows in this book are exactly that the highs are so high and the lows are so low I’m just still in shock at how perfectly this book was written。 I saw some reviews that said that COVID was the main topic in this book and I couldn’t disagree more I don’t feel like that at all。 Covid is happening in the background and isn’t a huge topic just something we knew was going Why the hell did it take me so long to read this。 I sobbed literal tears。 Callie and Harleys story shattered me。 The highs and the lows in this book are exactly that the highs are so high and the lows are so low I’m just still in shock at how perfectly this book was written。 I saw some reviews that said that COVID was the main topic in this book and I couldn’t disagree more I don’t feel like that at all。 Covid is happening in the background and isn’t a huge topic just something we knew was going on while all these other things were also going on。 Loved this so much。 。。。more

The book was really long。 I didn’t understand some of Andrew’s motivations。 For example, he says he wants revenge because Callie and Leigh ruined his life when they killed his dad。 But this made absolutely no sense to me。 Andrew got money and was set up for success after his father died。 Furthermore, I didn’t understand Leigh’s motivation to become a defense attorney rather than a prosecutor。 With her somewhat vengeful streak, I would think she would prefer to be a prosecutor and make sure evil The book was really long。 I didn’t understand some of Andrew’s motivations。 For example, he says he wants revenge because Callie and Leigh ruined his life when they killed his dad。 But this made absolutely no sense to me。 Andrew got money and was set up for success after his father died。 Furthermore, I didn’t understand Leigh’s motivation to become a defense attorney rather than a prosecutor。 With her somewhat vengeful streak, I would think she would prefer to be a prosecutor and make sure evil people go to jail and are punished。 Andrew’s death was not as cathartic as I thought it was going to be。 I wish Callie had killed Andrew in a more extreme way and I wish that she laughed at him while she killed him。 Truly a vengeful death。 I also thought the ending was short and underdeveloped。 It’s not like everything would work out happily ever after just because the author wanted it to。 For example, it’s not like the police are going to ignore the fact that Callie killed Andrew and Sidney and let Leigh walk off scot-free。 And the police aren’t going to ignore the fact that Reggie ‘skipped town’ and there’s blood all over his office and signs of a potential break-in (the safe is gone)。 The author failed to resolve or clarify if Leigh and Walter get a divorce or what will happen to Maddie from now on。 。。。more

Best book I have read in so long。 It is heartbreaking to think how girls are abused at such a young age and cannot get out of the poverty cycle。 Karin Slaughter is such an amazing author and makes you think of the disadvantage that many kids face in everyday life。 We all just want love and acceptance。
