Summary

When builders renovating a café in King's Lynn find a human skeleton in the wall, they immediately call for DCI Harry Nelson and Dr Ruth Galloway, Head of Archaeology at the nearby University of North Norfolk。 Ruth is preoccupied with the possible closure of her department and by the fact that Nelson and his wife are now living separately。 Nevertheless she agrees to take on the case。

She sees immediately that the bones are modern and they are soon identified as the remains of Katherine Sands, who went missing in the 1990s。 Katherine attended a spiritual well-being course and suspicion falls on the leader of the course - Ruth's friend, Cathbad。

The Police start to investigate the group and find that there are other missing women, making matters even worse for Cathbad。 The trail leads Nelson to the famous Neolithic flint mines in Grimes Graves and to an archaeology group。 Ruth agrees to infiltrate the group and there meets a figure from her own past。 Soon the race is on to exonerate Cathbad, but will Ruth and Nelson uncover the truth in time to save their friend?

This was definitely a step up from the last Ruth Galloway book, which I was not as invested in。 I liked how the story was more crime focused instead of focusing on the drama between the recurring characters。

This series has been struggling for a little while, but it comes roaring back in this (final?) installment。 Good mystery, continuing worry for Cathbad, excellent use of contemporary conditions and the malaise that is Covid, and a truly surprising turn of events on the university front。 I love to see Ruth really come into her own, and Nelson find his way to home。 Advanced Readers Copy provided by edelweiss。

Griffiths has ended the Ruth Galloway series with a bang。 Last Remains is the final book and it's a terrific read。 Ruth is facing academic challenges。 The university plans to eliminate the Archaeology Department。 There are the usual personal challenges as her daughter, Kate will soon enter secondary school which will most likely mean moving from the beloved salt marsh cottage。 Then there's the long-standing relationship with Nelson。 Nelson's wife was in Blackpool during the COVID lock down and d Griffiths has ended the Ruth Galloway series with a bang。 Last Remains is the final book and it's a terrific read。 Ruth is facing academic challenges。 The university plans to eliminate the Archaeology Department。 There are the usual personal challenges as her daughter, Kate will soon enter secondary school which will most likely mean moving from the beloved salt marsh cottage。 Then there's the long-standing relationship with Nelson。 Nelson's wife was in Blackpool during the COVID lock down and doesn't appear in a hurry to return home - a situation that Ruth and Nelson have made the most of but which puts pressure on Ruth about the future。 Then there's worry about Cathbad who seems to have lingering issues from COVID。When a builder finds human bones behind a brick wall in a building he's renovating, Ruth is called in to assess the age of the remains。 They belonged to a young woman who disappeared 20 years ago。 When it becomes clear that a professor from Ruth's former university and Cathbad knew the woman and were among the last people to see her alive, the investigation becomes personal for Ruth。 There are multiple suspects but one stands out。Griffiths has written a satisfying conclusion to the series and done it in an interesting way。 Although I may not agree with all of Ruth's decisions it was truly a grand finale! Thanks to NetGalley and Mariner Book for the opportunity to read this title。 。。。more

I’m a big Elly Griffiths fan and when I read that this book was going to be the last one in the Ruth Galloway series I was devastated。 It was going to be like saying goodbye to an old friend。 I’ve read all the books in order after they were recommended by a good friend several years ago and they’ve all been excellent。 The last book was brilliant, set in the early days of the pandemic and this one carries on in the same vein although matters have improved as lockdowns are now over。Nelson and Ruth I’m a big Elly Griffiths fan and when I read that this book was going to be the last one in the Ruth Galloway series I was devastated。 It was going to be like saying goodbye to an old friend。 I’ve read all the books in order after they were recommended by a good friend several years ago and they’ve all been excellent。 The last book was brilliant, set in the early days of the pandemic and this one carries on in the same vein although matters have improved as lockdowns are now over。Nelson and Ruth are investigating the discovery of a body blocked up behind the wall of a cafe。 However the corpse is not an ancient burial but that of a young student who went missing in 2002。When Cathbad who is still recovering from Covid disappears, after admitting he knew the dead girl, things do not look good。 The mystery at the heart of the story is cleverly plotted as always but the main focus of the book is what will happen to our beloved central characters。 Will Ruth end up with Nelson or will he move up North to be near his ex who has returned to Blackpool with his young son。 Ruth’s department at the university is threatened with closure and it is not clear until the final pages whether Ruth’s campaign to save it will be successful or whether she will have to move away to find another job。Change is afoot and the book is so brilliantly written that the reader does not guess the outcome until the very end。This is a fitting finale for Ruth, Nelson and all the wonderful characters imagined by this excellent author。 I am just hoping that Elly Griffiths sees fit to pick up their story again one day in the future。A massive five stars from me both for this book and the whole wonderful series。Thanks to NetGalley and Quercus for my review copy。 。。。more

Through reviewers constantly reviewing and raving about Elly Griffiths books, I ordered the first two in the series from my local library。 I absolutely loved them。 Unfortunately I haven’t progressed any further so perhaps was a bit silly to request the latest book。 It’s fantastic, like I am sure the others I’ve missed were, but oh boy, a lot has happened since book 2 and even though I know how most things end up, I will certainly carry on reading the series。The story starts with a cafe being ren Through reviewers constantly reviewing and raving about Elly Griffiths books, I ordered the first two in the series from my local library。 I absolutely loved them。 Unfortunately I haven’t progressed any further so perhaps was a bit silly to request the latest book。 It’s fantastic, like I am sure the others I’ve missed were, but oh boy, a lot has happened since book 2 and even though I know how most things end up, I will certainly carry on reading the series。The story starts with a cafe being renovated, with the owners taking a wall down around a fireplace so they can open it up and use the fire。 The builders discover a human skeleton and Ruth Galloway is called in。 She soon confirms that due to a metal plate in the ankle the body is quite recent and from the size probably female。 It is soon confirmed that it is that of Emily Pickering, an archaeology student who went missing in 2002。 Present day and COVID is still around, there is the threat of the closure of Ruth’s department , and of course her complicated relationship with DCI Nelson, her daughters father but a man married to someone else with a family of his own。 It’s good to see that characters from the first books I read are still around including the wonderful if slightly eccentric Cathbad。 I read another review where the poster had said this was the last Ruth Galloway book。 I certainly hope not as she is a wonderful character, as they all are, and the history and archaeology bought into the stories is fantastic。#TheLastRemains #NetGalley 。。。more

I was thrilled when I was approved for an eARC of the latest Ruth Galloway book。 If you're new to the series, The Last Remains is perhaps not the best book to begin with。 Each book has a new case, so it is possible to read them separately。 As there is so much history, I suggest starting at the beginning (take it from me, I'm a pro at starting series later on and having to go back to the beginning)。Ruth, Nelson, Cathbad (my favourite), and all the other characters are back, and this case is going I was thrilled when I was approved for an eARC of the latest Ruth Galloway book。 If you're new to the series, The Last Remains is perhaps not the best book to begin with。 Each book has a new case, so it is possible to read them separately。 As there is so much history, I suggest starting at the beginning (take it from me, I'm a pro at starting series later on and having to go back to the beginning)。Ruth, Nelson, Cathbad (my favourite), and all the other characters are back, and this case is going to get very personal for them。 The story captivated me from the beginning。 Griffiths writes in a way that will make you want to keep reading。 There are also books in which the characters' personal lives take precedence over the case。 In this series, however, everything that happens in the lives of the characters is just as entertaining。 It's a great book and I loved the ending。 。。。more

When I read a Ruth Galloway book I feel like I'm with a group of my old friends。 I love the variety of characters and their interactions with each other。 This installment did not disappoint, although I read it with trepidation, thinking the curtain is coming down for the series。 Which it still could。 But there is also a path for new stories emerging。 An excellent mystery with so many possibilities you're left wondering and guessing until the end。 I thoroughly enjoyed it, and as always, I hope fo When I read a Ruth Galloway book I feel like I'm with a group of my old friends。 I love the variety of characters and their interactions with each other。 This installment did not disappoint, although I read it with trepidation, thinking the curtain is coming down for the series。 Which it still could。 But there is also a path for new stories emerging。 An excellent mystery with so many possibilities you're left wondering and guessing until the end。 I thoroughly enjoyed it, and as always, I hope for more。 My only criticism is: Too much COVID。 I suppose I'm just ready to move on, and while I understand it's part of the real narrative of the time, I think a few mentions in passing would have sufficed。 COVID felt like an extra unwanted character in the story。 Again, probably just pandemic fatigue on my part, but less mention would have been welcome。 。。。more

This will be the ending of the Ruth Galloway series…。。for now。 The author did wrap it up in a positive way but still left the door open to furthering the story of Ruth and her family。 Good bye for now。

A thoroughly satisfying and fitting conclusion to the series。*Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for providing an e-galley in exchange for an honest review。

Absolute perfection。 I loved the mystery and the detective work, but Elly Griffiths' stories are about the cast of characters that you absorb as part of your life, and she ended this series staying true to all of them。 I was afraid for several chapters that she was going to do something unforgiveable, but after getting me all wound up, the story resolved perfectly。 I highly recommend the Ruth Galloway series, and while she ended this on a perfect note, I am going to miss Ruth, Nelson, Judy, Cath Absolute perfection。 I loved the mystery and the detective work, but Elly Griffiths' stories are about the cast of characters that you absorb as part of your life, and she ended this series staying true to all of them。 I was afraid for several chapters that she was going to do something unforgiveable, but after getting me all wound up, the story resolved perfectly。 I highly recommend the Ruth Galloway series, and while she ended this on a perfect note, I am going to miss Ruth, Nelson, Judy, Cathbad, Cloughie, Zoe, Kate, and everyone else terribly。 。。。more

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced review copy。I absolutely devoured this final installment in the Ruth Galloway series -- finished it in one day! Griffiths is a master at tension and suspense, and The Last Remains is no exception。 There are so many twists, you'll be glued to the page and probably stay up far past your bedtime。 I can't say much more without giving away any spoilers, but it was wonderful to visit King's Lynn and Ruth's little cottage by the saltmarsh one mor Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced review copy。I absolutely devoured this final installment in the Ruth Galloway series -- finished it in one day!
