This is a kid's book that I completed to meet a reading challenge, and I was not looking forward to it truthfully。 But it was so good and I really loved the characters and their relationship with their grandmother。 This is a kid's book that I completed to meet a reading challenge, and I was not looking forward to it truthfully。 But it was so good and I really loved the characters and their relationship with their grandmother。 。。。more

Made me cry … very deep

This was lovely, but so very sad。 I wonder what kids think of it - I feel like it might go over a lot of heads。

This book was very emotional。 It also had a lot of elements of magical realism that I enjoyed。 The writing in this is so poetic and there are so many quotable moments。 I also loved the relationships in here and how the characters grew throughout the story。 It is definitely a tear jerker。

Listened with the kids and we all enjoyed it。 I thought the writing (and audio narration) were beautifully done。

“If you are strong, you can hold more than one truth in your heart。” Hard-hitting middle grade makes me cry like almost no other book can, and this one is up there with the best of them。 It reminded me of A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, but it certainly stands on its own as a creative and culturally rich meditation on identity, grief, the power of stories, family and love。 Very thankful that this story found its way to me 🤍

An excellent healing book!I’m already 32 years old but I can imagine how I’d feel if I read this book when I was 10 or 12。 It would allow me to know more who I am and gave me the courage to face all unknown possibilities and difficulties in the future。 The reason I read this book is I’m not a native speaker but I want to practice daily English。 I think this book is really great! I highly recommend this book to every children!

6 starsi'm convinced that anyone who gives this less than 4 stars is a monster /j。 but really, i do question why anyone would give this any less than 4 because this is the best coming of age book i've ever read in my entire life。 i don't say that lightly, especially because my tolerance for coming of age stories and their tropes are at an all-time low。 it's a story about grieving, intergenerational trauma, and so full of heart while tackling every subject with the nuance it deserves。 i get that 6 starsi'm convinced that anyone who gives this less than 4 stars is a monster /j。 but really, i do question why anyone would give this any less than 4 because this is the best coming of age book i've ever read in my entire life。 i don't say that lightly, especially because my tolerance for coming of age stories and their tropes are at an all-time low。 it's a story about grieving, intergenerational trauma, and so full of heart while tackling every subject with the nuance it deserves。 i get that it can be annoying with all of the miscommunication (and it was), but i related to the main character。 i was like her as a kid—i was a quiet asian girl with no confidence and tried to become the complete opposite like her sister。 nobody can expect a child to communicate like an adult, especially with everything she's been through。 not only that but all of the magical realism parallels with the grieving process。。。beautiful。 i was in tears。 tae keller wrote the perfect coming of age story and i can't wait to read her other works。 。。。more

Lily's move to live with her grandmother is a large upheaval for Lily, her mom and her older sister Sam。 Not only does she have to find new friends and manage the emotions at home - but now she's seeing things。 Well, someTHING。 A big thing。 A tiger。 And soon knows that the Tiger needs something incredible from her - she just has to figure out how to get it。This magical realism story of Korean folktales come to life is heavy with emotional turmoil and family drama。 I liked how female-centric the Lily's move to live with her grandmother is a large upheaval for Lily, her mom and her older sister Sam。 Not only does she have to find new friends and manage the emotions at home - but now she's seeing things。 Well, someTHING。 A big thing。 A tiger。 And soon knows that the Tiger needs something incredible from her - she just has to figure out how to get it。This magical realism story of Korean folktales come to life is heavy with emotional turmoil and family drama。 I liked how female-centric the relationships are, between mothers and daughters and grandmothers and sisters, everyone is learning how to have healthy interactions and it's not easy to navigate, especially when there is generational trauma and diverse cultural issues to deal with as well。 There are some really tender minutes and I appreciated's Lily's arc of people-pleasing to finding-her-voice。 I also think it's important that kids can read stories of loss and hope, of grief and processing。 The magical realism didn't work perfectly for me - I never could just immerse myself in it but I know I'm not the intended audience, so take that for what it is。 。。。more

This book made me feeling things, memories that were years pasted but still fresh in my mind。 It made me long for loved ones who are passed on and who I don’t get to see very often。

I loved this so much。 It was sweet, and funny, but also touching and sad。 I adore Lily & her journey to learn more about herself, and her family, and in particular I really loved that even though she did have a lot of character growth, she doesn't fundamentally change。 She is a soft & quiet girl, and that isn't something that needs to be fixed or changed。 She finds strength and courage, but instead of "pulling her out of her shell" that strength and courage turns into a confidence to be who she I loved this so much。 It was sweet, and funny, but also touching and sad。 I adore Lily & her journey to learn more about herself, and her family, and in particular I really loved that even though she did have a lot of character growth, she doesn't fundamentally change。 She is a soft & quiet girl, and that isn't something that needs to be fixed or changed。 She finds strength and courage, but instead of "pulling her out of her shell" that strength and courage turns into a confidence to be who she is。 。。。more

Not sure how this came in as #1。 It was just so so。 I don't think I am quite ready for my reading to include books that have fantastical elements mixed in with reality。 One or the other! I loved this book。 It was a perfect mix of reality and fantasy/mythology。 The start was a little bit slow but once I got into it I couldn't put it down。 The characters are likeable, the ending made me cry like a baby and the entire story is simply great。 I am not sure why I bought this one a year or so ago but I am so glad that I did and that I read it。 It's truly an underrated gem。 I loved this book。 It was a perfect mix of reality and fantasy/mythology。 The start was a little bit slow but once I got into it I couldn't put it down。 The characters are likeable, the ending made me cry like a baby and the entire story is simply great。 I am not sure why I bought this one a year or so ago but I am so glad that I did and that I read it。 It's truly an underrated gem。 。。。more

Listened to for Alaina’s literature class。 We all enjoyed it though it was a little slow paced/repetitive (and we listened to it on 1。25 speed)。 It is interested to learn some aspects of Korean mythology for a change!

I cried several times? Magical realism for kids? I haven't read any recently published Newbery winners until now and I'm glad that they are still EXCELLENT。An amazing book about sisters, death, grief, love, mothers, friendship, stereotypes, biculturalism, storytelling, and Korea's very sad history。 I can't believe how much Tae Keller was able to weave into her central metaphor of the tiger's stories - there is so much happening in this book on so many levels。 As an adult with a better understand I cried several times? This book was devastatingly beautiful。 From start to finish I was enthralled。 The author is a true storyteller, one who is both poetic and succinct。 The topics and themes covered are not easy and may be too much for some, but I cannot give enough accolades。 One of the best Middle Grade books I have ever read。

Rebecca Lowe

Middle school appropriate。 I loved the mix of magical realism and how every fantasy story is actually a true story。 Also loved the friendship between Lily and Ricky and how complex and fun Ricky was。 A great deep story。

This book does a great job of combining make believe with modern day life。 I think the author does a great job of show。g so many different testaments through grief, family relationships, and just finding one's voice as a biracial character/ This book does a great job of combining make believe with modern day life。 I think the author does a great job of show。g so many different testaments through grief, family relationships, and just finding one's voice as a biracial character/ 。。。more
