Summary

Shanghai is under siege in this captivating and searingly romantic sequel to These Violent Delights, which New York Times bestselling author Natasha Ngan calls “deliciously dark。”

The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution。

After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on a mission。 One wrong move, and her cousin will step in to usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang’s heir。 The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood。 If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less。

Roma is still reeling from Marshall’s death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him。 Roma knows it’s his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he’s determined to set things right—even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure。

Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma’s cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all。 Shanghai is already at a boiling point: The Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day, and gangster rule faces complete annihilation。 Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren’t prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other。

Great start。 Fantastic ending。 Seemed to drag a bit towards the middle but it is worth it to push though。

Pia :)

gah i hate that this is a retelling of romeo and juliette。 anyway, this was good。 the ending is so unsatisfying but overall this book was goodddd。ill be honest i still don’t understand all of the politics and the monster complication felt a bit weak, but the actual characters interactions and arcs were so so interesting。

I pretty much inhaled this book 😂。 I do have to say that Gong is a master when it comes to portraying vivid imagery, creating the atmosphere for this series and creating a sense of urgency in her books。 That being said, I felt like this was a tad repetitive of the first book but overall it was so satisfying to have the culmination of all that slow burn enemies to lovers romance finally come together! I couldn't help but root for Juliette and Roma。 And goodness Juliette! That final showdown was *chef's kiss*。Content warnings are similar to book 1 but I did feel this book was darker/had more gore。 Blood, violence, gore, dwath, grief, suicide, torture。 。。。more

I enjoyed this more than the previous one, but it definitely was a case where the concept was better than the execution。 I got really into it in the end though。

“These violent delights have violent ends, you have always known this。”The sequel and also the final book in These Violent Delights duology serves as a pretty good conclusion to this Romeo and Juliet retelling。The story starts right after how the first book ends, when it feels like Roma and Juliette ended the monsters in the first book their city is still not safe。 Seeing how Roma really hated Juliette with all his guts breaks my heart when me (as the readers) know the truth behind Juliette’ “These violent delights have violent ends, you have always known this。”The sequel and also the final book in These Violent Delights duology serves as a pretty good conclusion to this Romeo and Juliet retelling。The story starts right after how the first book ends, when it feels like Roma and Juliette ended the monsters in the first book their city is still not safe。 Seeing how Roma really hated Juliette with all his guts breaks my heart when me (as the readers) know the truth behind Juliette’s reason for doing what she did。I love how the side characters also showed up more with their own POV throughout the story。 However, I was slightly disappointed to know the monster doesn’t play a big part of the story and it’s not as intense and action-packed as the first book。 Instead, Shanghai was more on a brink of a civil war between the Nationalist and Communist。 Sadly to say I’m not hugely interested with the political intrigue in this story。I keep on reading to know what will happen with Roma and Juliette’s love story, the secret blackmailer and with the monsters still lurking around the city。 Overall, this duology is pretty good – I enjoy my time in Shanghai and following the forbidden love romance between rival gangs。 I’ve always know how it’s going to end given this is the Romeo and Juliet retelling but it still breaks my heart for reading the last few chapters。 Nevertheless, just like Alisa I would also like to hope。。 for them to be happy wherever they are。I'm looking forward to read more books by this author and I would probably read the next series later on to know what happens with Rosalind after this one。 “I will fight this war to love you, Juliette Cai。 I will fight this feud to have you, because it was this feud that gave you to me, twisted as it is, and now I will take you away from it。”Actual rating: 3。5⭐⚠️ 𝐓𝐖 : Blood, violence, gore, character deaths, murder (including mass murder), war themes, torture, weapon use, insects, alcohol consumption, parental abuse。 。。。more

This was the book I expected with These Violent Delights。 The complex plot kept me on the edge of my seat。 I love tales with multiple storylines that dovetail, and this book delivered。 The characters had felt a bit grainy still at the end of These Violent Delights。 In Our Violent Ends, the author details them in the choices they make and I could feel them come off the page。 The political situations danced alive too and became more real than the vague monster threat in the first book that… kinda This was the book I expected with These Violent Delights。 The complex plot kept me on the edge of my seat。 I love tales with multiple storylines that dovetail, and this book delivered。 The characters had felt a bit grainy still at the end of These Violent Delights。 In Our Violent Ends, the author details them in the choices they make and I could feel them come off the page。 The political situations danced alive too and became more real than the vague monster threat in the first book that… kinda got laborious to wait for。Our Violent Ends is a brilliant piece of work that dropped me into 1920’s Shanghai。 I loved reading about Zhouzhuang, having been there shortly before the pandemic。 It made me nostalgic。This piece has solidified me as a solid Chloe Gong fan。 。。。more

I-The ending I-My gosh。 Book one left me speechless and book 2 was even better。 I know much of the violence is historically accurate, but there was just so /much/ of it in this series。 I will definitely put out a warning for that。 I was /so/ tempted to rate these lower because of that, as well as another irritatingly unnecessary gay couple thrown in the mix😭, but I couldn’t do it。 If it wasn’t for those two things this series would become part of my all-time favorites。 Ahhh I’m still reeling 😭。 I-The ending I-My gosh。 Book one left me speechless and book 2 was even better。 I know much of the violence is historically accurate, but there was just so /much/ of it in this series。 I will definitely put out a warning for that。 I was /so/ tempted to rate these lower because of that, as well as another irritatingly unnecessary gay couple thrown in the mix😭, but I couldn’t do it。 If it wasn’t for those two things this series would become part of my all-time favorites。 Ahhh I’m still reeling 😭。 This series was /really/ good, but please be mindful of the above warnings。 I’d recommend this to people looking for that dark Ketterdam vibe with a side of the best enemies-to-lovers I’ve yet read。 。。。more
