Summary

Rhode Island, 1846。 Estranged from his family, writer Merritt Fernsby is surprised when he inherits a remote estate in the Narragansett Bay。 Though the property has been uninhabited for more than a century, Merritt is ready to call it home—until he realizes he has no choice。 With its doors slamming shut and locking behind him, Whimbrel House is not about to let Merritt leave。 Ever。

Hulda Larkin of the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms has been trained in taming such structures in order to preserve their historical and magical significance。 She understands the dangers of bespelled homes given to tantrums。 She advises that it’s in Merritt’s best interest to make Whimbrel House their ally。 To do that, she’ll need to move in, too。

Prepared as she is with augury, a set of magic tools, and a new staff trained in the uncanny, Hulda’s work still proves unexpectedly difficult。 She and Merritt grow closer as the investigation progresses, but the house’s secrets run deeper than they anticipated。 And the sentient walls aren’t their only concern—something outside is coming for the enchantments of Whimbrel House, and it could be more dangerous than what rattles within。

Another homerun for Charlie N。 Holmberg!I have been reading their books since Paper Magician and love their ability to craft unique worlds and circumstances。 In Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, we get multiple POVs and shifting timelines。 I found myself exceptionally drawn to Merritt with his disillusioned dumpy life and Hulda with her quirks and prim and proper attitude。 I also found my shoulders tensing and my anxiety spiking whenever we shifted back to Silas' POV。 I think it takes a really special Another homerun for Charlie N。 Holmberg!I have been reading their books since Paper Magician and love their ability to craft unique worlds and circumstances。 In Keeper of Enchanted Rooms, we get multiple POVs and shifting timelines。 I found myself exceptionally drawn to Merritt with his disillusioned dumpy life and Hulda with her quirks and prim and proper attitude。 I also found my shoulders tensing and my anxiety spiking whenever we shifted back to Silas' POV。 I think it takes a really special book to get you that invested in the content。 Overall, a charming and fun read from a must-read author。I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Well written with interesting characters。 The protagonists are easy to feel sympathy for, if not easy to believe。 Some of the plot does depend on hard to believe/accept actions by peripheral characters, so the plot is a little thin。 All in all a good beach read。

The year is 1846。 Merritt Fernsby is an author。 When he inherits Whimbrel House on Blaugdone Island, RI, he’s rather stunned, but curious。 He would own it, not have to pay rent anymore and it may be the perfect place to finish his new book。 Luckily for Merritt, Hulda Larkin is an official Housekeeper of enchanted houses and has been assigned by BIKER (the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms) to take care of the house and solve any problems with it Merritt might have。 And he has a The year is 1846。 Merritt Fernsby is an author。 When he inherits Whimbrel House on Blaugdone Island, RI, he’s rather stunned, but curious。 He would own it, not have to pay rent anymore and it may be the perfect place to finish his new book。 Luckily for Merritt, Hulda Larkin is an official Housekeeper of enchanted houses and has been assigned by BIKER (the Boston Institute for the Keeping of Enchanted Rooms) to take care of the house and solve any problems with it Merritt might have。 And he has a big problem – the house will not allow him to leave! But that’s not his only problem。 Hulda’s former employer has secretly come to the US and wants Whimbrel House for his own and is used to taking what he wants。 This was my first book by Charlie Holmberg and it definitely will not be my last。 It was fun, it was charming, it was romantic and very entertaining。 I absolutely loved it。 I already cannot wait to start the second book of the series。 。。。more

I initially picked this up due to the local interest, and although a local must suspend geographic belief a bit, it's a fun read if you know the area。 I wish the author's note included how Holmberg chose Portsmouth, RI as the setting of the story, she being a Utah resident。 A light, sweet read, and not too much world building, this is a good choice for someone looking to ease into reading Fantasy。 Recommended for fans of The House in the Cerulean Sea, The Book of Speculation, The Widow of Rose H I initially picked this up due to the local interest, and although a local must suspend geographic belief a bit, it's a fun read if you know the area。 I wish the author's note included how Holmberg chose Portsmouth, RI as the setting of the story, she being a Utah resident。 A light, sweet read, and not too much world building, this is a good choice for someone looking to ease into reading Fantasy。 Recommended for fans of The House in the Cerulean Sea, The Book of Speculation, The Widow of Rose House, The Sea Gate, or Unseen City。 。。。more

Oh my god, this was so cute!It started like a free audiobook with an interesting blurb that could have gone either way and it quickly turned into an addictive magic and creative story。Other reviews have described it often as a "warm hug" or a cozy choice, perfect for the cold season and it is so true。 Also always bonus points for every audiobook that can make me burst out laughing in the middle of the street! This would be an unpopular opinion。 I did not enjoy this book although I finished it。The premise started out strong。 With a well crafted villain, an enchanted/haunted house with a personality, and an imaginative world building and two main characters。 And set in victoriana England! What derailed it for me was Hulda's internal monologue。 And the cheap romance。 This would be an unpopular opinion。 I did not enjoy this book although I finished it。The premise started out strong。 With a well crafted villain, an enchanted/haunted house with a personality, and an imaginative world building and two main characters。 And set in victoriana England! I really wanted to enjoy this but I didn’t care about the characters, the story was boring and I wasn’t interested to see how it all came together。 After two weeks of trying to read this, I’m calling it quits。 DNF @ 38%

This was such a delightful little read! I’ve seen Charlie N。 Holmberg’s books here and there on KU many times before and I’m so annoyed I didn’t pick one up sooner。 This had the cosy vibes I was looking for but it also kept me on my toes with a slightly sinister subplot。 Add some slow burn romance and voilà! I have a lot of thoughts about this book, but I'm not sure my brain is un-fogged enough for me to do it right。 Still, I'm going to try my best。There were things in this book that really, really worked for me。 There were others that I'm a little iffy on。 This definitely wasn't a bad book, though it felt a little bit。。。 disjointed? One of the things I really, really liked was the "place as a character" thing it had going on。 I loved the personality of the house and how cozy the setting felt。 I also I have a lot of thoughts about this book, but I'm not sure my brain is un-fogged enough for me to do it right。 Still, I'm going to try my best。There were things in this book that really, really worked for me。 There were others that I'm a little iffy on。 This definitely wasn't a bad book, though it felt a little bit。。。 disjointed? One of the things I really, really liked was the "place as a character" thing it had going on。 I loved the personality of the house and how cozy the setting felt。 I also enjoyed the romance between the two leads as well。 While their relationship could have used a bit more development to be really perfect, I still enjoyed it and the ending did tug a smile out of me。 (view spoiler)[ What didn't work for me is a little complicated to explain (and could just be me being nitpicky), but here we go。。。I felt like the setting--outside the house portions--was very much slapdashed together, imo。 You've got a magical world in the 1840s。 Cool。 Then, you add some religious aspects that feel。。。 um, weirdly out of place (especially given religions notable qualms about magic)。 That might be a bit more forgivable given the time period, I guess。 But there's no mention of how religion and magic interact and there's specific mention by one of the characters--Hulda, I think--of the Salem Witch Trials。 How are you going to have the Salem Witch Trials in a book where not only are magic and magicians commonplace--there are whole ass carts powered by magic--but considered normal, if potentially dying out? Idk, there was a kind of dissonance(?) to it that just was jarring to me。 And I get that the point of the story wasn't how magic and religion overlap。 Truthfully, I don't think the author really gave it all that much thought beyond that。 There's also some kind of vagueness to anything regarding racism in the 1840s。 I'm not an expert on this, so I'm just going to keep this brief because I think, again, it boils down to the author just taking parts of the setting that fit what she wanted to do with her novel and not bothering with the rest。 Again, this is a magical realism-type of novel with romantic bent, so I'm not going in expecting hard-hitting critique on race relations in the 1840s, but it feels a bit tonally weird to have a set period in the U。S。 as your backdrop and just。。。 not even address things that were important issues in that period? I mean, that wasn't the goal and I'm honestly just repeating myself at this point and probably just making things more complicated than they need to be, but it nagged at me a little。Lastly, I feel like the Silas-POV chapters just did not work。 Like, I honestly would've preferred if it were just a found family type of deal in an enchanted house with a side of romance。 But if you absolutely had to have a villain, it would have been better to keep Silas a mysterious figure。 When you're reading, you already know that Hulda had some issues with a previous employer that made her wary and a little distrustful。 The Silas chapters only serve to make him at first sympathetic (like, what was that weirdly graphic scene of abuse in the first Silas chapter???), then turn him into a caricature。 It just really didn't work for me。 Also, I am a little disappointed that the enchanted house de-enchanted in the end。 I mean, I love a magical animal companion as much as the next person, but the cool house, though??? (hide spoiler)]I'm not sure if any of what I hid behind the spoilers makes much sense, but whatever。 I think I might go ahead and read the next book, even though I truthfully think it didn't need to exist。 The ending seemed like a pretty decent way to end it, imo。 。。。more

Such a cute story! I knew when there was a blueprint of the house at the beginning of the book that this would be my cup of tea。 The schools of magic were kind of hard to wrap my head around and I had to keep flipping to that page in the book (annoying on Kindle)。 I loved all the characters。 The baddy is definitely bad and the hero is good but still flawed。 Sweetest love story。 The best part about this book was the book club discussion!
