Instead, I'll recount my experiance reading it。I began 65 days ago (I read somewhat slowly) feeling intimidated。 I had never read a book this long before, and I knew I was unprepared for the depth of the setting and relatively advanced prose。 Despite being in over my head (and indeed I was, I bravely began, with the introductory material。 I enjoyed Tolkien's own prologue, and appreciated his humble analysis of his own work, which helped prepare me somewhat。 Most importantly was his non-explanation regarding themes。 After this I was on my own。Book II thought the first half of Fellowship was off to a strong start, with a quite good first chapter。 Then there was Gandalf's 20 page exposition dumb which I liked because I actually don't mind exposition dumps。 After that things got shaky。 The black riders, the mystery of Gandalf's absence, and the interplay between the hobbits was good。 However I found myself getting frustrated in the next few chapters。 I maintain that A Shortcut to Mushrooms is the worst chapter in the entire book。 Tom Bombadil was fun to read but not very exciting; I like his poems。 The Barrow Downs is neat though。 Things pick up however when they arrive in Bree, and the Weathertop part is good too。Book IThis is easily the better half of Fellowship。 The Rivendell chapters are fantastic after the slow, brooding confusion of the previous chapters。 Moria is arguably the coolest location and is the best sword and sorcery moment in the book, even more so than Shelob's Lair。 After that it slows down a little at Lothlorien, but it ends fantastically with Boromir's madness and Frodo and Sam escaping。 I should give my opinion on the fellowship。 I find Legolas to be exceedingly boring but all the other characters are superb, with Gimli being just as charming as the hobbits。 The cliffhanger ending is great。Book IIII love this part。 Merry and Pippin getting captured and eventually rousing the ents to assault Isengard is cool, and Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli looking for them and running into Eomer and Gandalf is quite enjoyable as well。 Afterwords it develops into actual warfare, with the events at Isengard and Helm's Deep。 The Voice of Saruman is in particular a fantastic chapter, as is The Palintir。 Rohan is also a wonderful setting in general。Book IVThis one is quite bleak and a little too slow。 Reading it was a rather lonely experiance because of the small cast; for the most part just Sam, Frodo and Gollum。 The marshes is cool because I like swamps, and Faramir's entrance was great, but overall this section was a rather depressing read, and I was glad to get through it, although it was well executed。Book VThis is where Lord of the Rings peaks。 Minas Tirith is an amazing location, Merry and Pippin come into their own even further, Denethor is truly a fascinating character, and his interactions with Faramir are interesting。 The Battle of the Pelennor Fields is cool, Gandalf peaks as a character around that time, and its aftermath is good。 I thoroughly enjoyed this stretch of the book。 The main downside is that Legolas and Gimli take a back seat。Book VITolkien wisely doesn't drag out the quest for much longer。 After the chaos at Shelob's Lair, Sam and Frodo get to Mount Doom and destroy the ring。 I was quite glad to get past that part, but not because I wasn't enjoying myself, but because Tolkien did a fantastic job of making me care and I was glad that Sauron was defeated。 The rest of the book was the aftermath, and I got through that part in one sitting and found no complaints。 The characters met the end of their arcs and I was happy to read these chapters。 The Scouring of the Shire was a fantastic subplot。 The Grey Heavens was truly a bittersweet ending and caused me to cry。 Despite the book and movie drawing out the ending unusually long, it is a very good sequence of chapters。General Observations - I love how aggressively English the hobbits are - The Elves feel rather cold, and I don't know how I feel about that - Tolkien is a damn good poet - The setting is presented very very well at all scopes - Tolkien's prose is amazing, whether that be the thankfully concise action or the contemplative and analytic quiet moments。 The concise and detailed parts make the story feel more realistic, and the concise moments tend to be the most beautiful。 On the micro level, his diction and elegance are unparalleled。 - Tolkien drags things out too much sometimes。 There are chapters that are genuinely frustrating - There are odd moments where the prose gets more archaic and I find these moments jarring。 - Legolas and Gimli just kinda dipped at the end ngl - This is fundamentally a work of romanticism, and having single-handedly defined the genre of epic fantasy, most fantasy nowadays is also part of the lineage of romanticism。 That said, Tolkien's emphasis on analysis and detail gives it a foot in realism too, something that its successors should try too。Overall this is a 9/10。 I don't need to tell you that this is a masterpiece, but oh my god I don't need to read about talking trees for 20+ pages。 。。。more

This is by far one of my favorite pieces of literature。 I have read it (and most of the supplemental/history books related to it) more times than I can count。 This story reads a lot more like a mythology than just a fiction。 The characters often tend to be more archetype than someone you might meet in your city。 However, the Hobbits are a pure delight, and there are plenty of moments of nuance, complexity and humor from even the straight-faced Aragorn to keep the cast from being bland and one-di This is by far one of my favorite pieces of literature。 I have read it (and most of the supplemental/history books related to it) more times than I can count。 This story reads a lot more like a mythology than just a fiction。 The characters often tend to be more archetype than someone you might meet in your city。 However, the Hobbits are a pure delight, and there are plenty of moments of nuance, complexity and humor from even the straight-faced Aragorn to keep the cast from being bland and one-dimensional。 In fact, some of the very best literary instances of friendship and devotion in the face of adversity are to be found here。 If you are not brought to smiles/tears at least once by Frodo and Sam or by Legolas and Gimli being unapologetic best buds, then I don't know what to tell you。 I cannot say enough good things about this book。 If you like mythology, exceptional world building and some of the most beautiful descriptions committed to page, you won't be disappointed。 That being said, I fully recognize that this book isn't for everyone。 It is dense with detail。 Entire chapters are devoted to descriptions of landscapes and their histories within in the world, and there are several instances of songs implanted within the narrative。 I love these inclusions, but I know plenty of people see them as bogging down pacing or interrupting narrative flow。 Don't expect a high octane read with fight scenes every couple of chapters。 This may not be the most exciting book you'll ever read, but I'd argue that it is one of the most beautiful。 。。。more

I'll just say, this is a long and complex book, but it's definitely worth it。 You might doze off in some parts, but the interesting parts pay off for that, and they make a pretty interesting story。 I decided not to read the appendices though, because that's what they are, appendices。 I'll just say, this is a long and complex book, but it's definitely worth it。 You might doze off in some parts, but the interesting parts pay off for that, and they make a pretty interesting story。 I decided not to read the appendices though, because that's what they are, appendices。 。。。more

My favourite fantasy book of all time, since first reading it when I was a young hobbit aged ten years old, I read it every 10 years, heading towards my fifth revision it has changed, with my own perspective of the world, but still very relevant in our modern world 😆

Maybe not all who wander are lost, but anyhow, I'd get lost in Middleearth asap if I could。 Tolkien is a mastermind when it comes to languages and wolrdbuilding and I love to read and get lost in his words。 Having that said, I like this book and its themes, characters and setting a lottl。 Maybe not all who wander are lost, but anyhow, I'd get lost in Middleearth asap if I could。 Tolkien is a mastermind when it comes to languages and wolrdbuilding and I love to read and get lost in his words。 Having that said, I like this book and its themes, characters and setting a lottl。 。。。more

It's been as long since I last read this as it takes frodo to set out from Hobbiton after Bilbo leaves, I think。 This time I noticed the landscapes, the scale and weft of it as frodo stumbles through it。 It is special, and it won't be as long a time between revisits again。 It's been as long since I last read this as it takes frodo to set out from Hobbiton after Bilbo leaves, I think。 This time I noticed the landscapes, the scale and weft of it as frodo stumbles through it。 It is special, and it won't be as long a time between revisits again。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I actually bought the single volume with all the three books in one with the illustrations by Alan Lee。 I read it aloud to my son who enjoyed it。 It took a while but was a fun bonding experience for both of us。 After each book we would watch the extended version of the movie。 Not that it matters, but I had forgotten that the movie Return of the King took a lot of dramatic license with editing information out of the story。 Most especially, how Saruman dies。 I guess I’ll give them half credit for I actually bought the single volume with all the three books in one with the illustrations by Alan Lee。 I read it aloud to my son who enjoyed it。 It took a while but was a fun bonding experience for both of us。 After each book we would watch the extended version of the movie。 Not that it matters, but I had forgotten that the movie Return of the King took a lot of dramatic license with editing information out of the story。 Most especially, how Saruman dies。 I guess I’ll give them half credit for him dying by Wyrmtongue’s hand。 。。。more

This book has been foundational for me as a reader and a writer。 It's classic but still nods its head to a modern world。 The Lord Of The Rings is in no way outdated, nor do I think it will succumb to time anytime soon。 This book has been foundational for me as a reader and a writer。 It's classic but still nods its head to a modern world。 The Lord Of The Rings is in no way outdated, nor do I think it will succumb to time anytime soon。 。。。more
