Full disclosure: I read books four and onward prior to their official English publication date， and the book delineations are completely different online （moreover both the translator and author mention ongoing edits）， so these reviews are based off of how I personally would break up the remaining material into five installments。 I’ve noted the chapter delineations and will probably come back and clean these up later after official publication。Chapters 181-208So I had been thinking the back stor Full disclosure: I read books four and onward prior to their official English publication date， and the book delineations are completely different online （moreover both the translator and author mention ongoing edits）， so these reviews are based off of how I personally would break up the remaining material into five installments。 I’ve noted the chapter delineations and will probably come back and clean these up later after official publication。Chapters 181-208So I had been thinking the back story in book three was pretty upsetting。 That was nothing。 The back story in this one ripped my heart out， stomped on it several times and then exploded it a la Hua Cheng and the scorpion snake in book one。 Xie Lian completely loses his way in this one， and it was excruciating to watch powerlessly the events that caused it， and then to see his kind spirit dwindle away until he is forever altered。 It was really， really hard to read。 Please be mindful of the content warning in chapters 190 and 191， but if you can get through these brutal chapters， I do recommend reading the back story in its entirety for this one， as it adds so much depth to both Xie Lian and Hua Cheng’s characters。 Xie Lian and Hua Cheng have always had an excellent dynamic， but as current events progressed， it was beautiful to see the way their relationship strengthened and transformed them into a powerful force to be reckoned with in this book。 Although as an adult he’s always protected and supported Xie Lian， this book sees Hua Cheng transform into a true partner， and it’s incredible to see Xie Lian use that partnership to overcome the figurative and literal demons of his own haunting past。 This book started by breaking my heart， but as Xie Lian and Hua Cheng rose to defeat their current challenges， it transformed into a exciting and heartwarming inspiration。 。。。more
