Summary

The author of The Charm Offensive returns with a festive romantic comedy about a woman who fakes an engagement with her landlord…only to fall for his sister。

One year ago, recent Portland transplant Ellie Oliver had her dream job in animation and a Christmas Eve meet-cute with a woman at a bookstore that led her to fall in love over the course of a single night。 But after a betrayal the next morning and the loss of her job soon after, she finds herself adrift, alone, and desperate for money。

Finding work at a local coffee shop, she’s just getting through the days—until Andrew, the shop’s landlord, proposes a shocking, drunken plan: a marriage of convenience that will give him his recent inheritance and alleviate Ellie’s financial woes and isolation。 They make a plan to spend the holidays together at his family cabin to keep up the ruse。 But when Andrew introduces his new fiancée to his sister, Ellie is shocked to discover it’s Jack—the mysterious woman she fell for over the course of one magical Christmas Eve the year before。 Now, Ellie must choose between the safety of a fake relationship and the risk of something real。

Perfect for fans of Written in the Stars and One Day in DecemberKiss Her Once for Me is the queer holiday rom-com that you’ll want to cozy up with next to the fire。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 If you spend literally half the book delaying the reveal of the big bad secret that made the characters part ways, it has to be something good。 It's just kind anti-climactic, though。So the incredibly outgoing woman, Jack, who literally invented a game with Ellie about telling the truth。。。 kind of forgets to come clean that she's literally still married。 She doesn't mind sharing anything else, no matter how embarrassing, but she falls in love with somebody and just。。。 doesn't mention having a wif If you spend literally half the book delaying the reveal of the big bad secret that made the characters part ways, it has to be something good。 It's just kind anti-climactic, though。So the incredibly outgoing woman, Jack, who literally invented a game with Ellie about telling the truth。。。 kind of forgets to come clean that she's literally still married。 She doesn't mind sharing anything else, no matter how embarrassing, but she falls in love with somebody and just。。。 doesn't mention having a wife。 Her wife then suddenly appears out of nowhere for no well explained reason (it's a Deus ex Machina), snarks at the new love interest (despite apparently being poly and wanting her wife to sleep with other people。。。) After Ellie leaves crying, the (ex?) wife never mentions she met her (ex?) wife's first and only one-night stand and had a conversation with her。 It makes absolutely 0 sense to me。The constant flashbacks were more annoying to me than anything。 Instead of plot progression, you get these chapters of pure fluff that add basically nothing。 We already know what happened between the main characters, and yet the flashbacks still keep coming。 They serve no real purpose, other than - again - delaying things。The story takes a huge amount of time to get going in the first place。 You spend about a third of the book getting past the setup (the bit spoilered within the description), meanwhile you basically get no plot, just waiting for the book to catch up with what you already know。And because the story doesn't get delayed enough, the author is a huge fan on one of the cheapest tricks in the genre: the constant interruptions。 The main characters have an important talk? Suddenly, somebody enters the room and interrupts their conversation。 They're about to kiss? The dog suddenly barks。 It happens constantly, and it annoyed me to no end。The characters are somewhat generic and definitely forgettable。 You get the socially awkward heroine, the gay, pretty brother, the pushy best friends ( - there's two of them and I hate them both), the magically intuitive grandma who instantly knows who's really in love with whom, the evil straight dad and late grandfather combo。The entire thing felt to me like a constant challenge of patience: I was constantly waiting for something specific to happen, but a) the characters constantly get interrupted whenever they're about to make progress, b) the annoying flashbacks delay things further and most importantly, c) there's nothing interesting happening in between。 Apart from the weirdness spoilered through the description, the story just takes the most obvious turns (aka: none at all) and nothing really surprising ever happens。 Everything is obvious from the start, there's never a place where I was unsure how things would turn out, never any tension。 It's just way too little to warrant a full length novel for me。All in all, Kiss Her Once for Me has enough plot to maybe be a decent novella - the writing isn't terrible。 Making it into a full scale novel without adding more relevant plot was a mistake though in my opinion; there's just so much fluff to wade through。Add to that the glaring plot holes (let's ignore the stupid setup for a second [Andrew has no proper reason not to tell people about the fake marriage]: why doesn't Ellie just tell Jack about their plan in confidence?) and it's a definite no from me。 。。。more

This was my first time reading anything by Alison Cochrum, I was not disappointed。 This book was charming, sweet and funny。 This book is a great read for Christmas。

I wanted to love this book, but it was so unbelievable。 Two people meet, spend one day together, then never see each other for a year and one of them is still “in love” with the other? Wtf??

3。5 stars!!If you're looking for a super cute and sweet holiday romcom that gives Serendipity vibes, you would greatly enjoy this book!I loved a lot of the writing choices Alison Cochrun made here。 I feel like she really established the parameters of this setup and how these characters would act。 Like almost everything had solid backing。 I also adored both the LGBTQIA+ and mental health representation in this。 Also the emphasis on clear communication! This is probably just a personal thing, but I 3。5 stars!!If you're looking for a super cute and sweet holiday romcom that gives Serendipity vibes, you would greatly enjoy this book!I loved a lot of the writing choices Alison Cochrun made here。 I feel like she really established the parameters of this setup and how these characters would act。 Like almost everything had solid backing。 I also adored both the LGBTQIA+ and mental health representation in this。 Also the emphasis on clear communication! This is probably just a personal thing, but I don't typically enjoy it when a book has a ton of current pop culture references。 And this book has a ton of these references。 To me, it makes it feel dated/"of its time", so a lot of jokes and things said in this book probably won't work in five years。I think in order for this book to be successful, the reader has to believe that Ellie and Jack's one-night stand constituents them as a second chance romance for this book。 And that was difficult for me to buy into in this instance。 Unfortunately, I found it hard to believe in their connection from the year prior to this book, and because of that, I missed out on a lot of the stakes involved。 Also, the conflict I saw coming from a mile away。 The conflict in general was suuuuper messy, but I kinda liked it!! I love that kinda drama。And another issue I had with this book is everything felt like an over-exaggeration if that makes sense? Like characters' actions and situations felt blown out of proportion a lot of the time to me。 Also, Ellie and Jack both made mistakes that I think were very easily avoidable but hey it's easy for me to say that in the comfort of my own home。I'll end it there lol。 Like I said, if you want a cozy, escapist read this holiday season I think this is a good option! 。。。more

It's not really my thing to read holiday season books (not just Christmas, but all holidays in general。) Fake-relationship and second-chance romances are not my favorite trope, too。 So at first, I thought this book would be an easy read, and I would probably forget most of it once I finished it。 Instead, I'm emotionally attached to all of the characters, and I did not expect to love this book so much! I think this is my favorite FF romance I have ever read。 This was sweet, and messy, and real, and and cozy, and also even heart wrenching at points… but it was so perfectly executed。 The demi and bi rep, the talk about family relationships, about honesty and failure, I mean honestly I could go on and on and on… but this book was wonderful and I’ll be forever recommending it to everyone。 I haven’t read The Charm Offensive yet (own it), but this author is now an auto-buy for me just based off this I think this is my favorite FF romance I have ever read。 This was sweet, and messy, and real, and and cozy, and also even heart wrenching at points… but it was so perfectly executed。 The demi and bi rep, the talk about family relationships, about honesty and failure, I mean honestly I could go on and on and on… but this book was wonderful and I’ll be forever recommending it to everyone。 I haven’t read The Charm Offensive yet (own it), but this author is now an auto-buy for me just based off this wonderful book。 🥹 100 million billion stars out of 5 ⭐️ 。。。more

4。5I enjoyed this more than The Charm Offensive。This was so good!! This is everything I like in a romance-chemistry, drama, and a good mix of plot and character development。 The reason this isn't a perfect 5 stars for me was the pacing was slightly off in the beginning as I initially found this book slow to start and much more action towards the end。 By the end I was so invested。 This revitalized my love for romance! Would highly recommend。 4。5I enjoyed this more than The Charm Offensive。This was so good!!
