Summary

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky。

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grows dangerously low。

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war。

Meet Karou。 She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real, she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands", she speaks many languages - not all of them human - and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color。 Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she’s about to find out。

When beautiful, haunted Akiva fixes fiery eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past。 But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

One of the best narrations of a book that I’ve listened to。 I can’t wait for book 2!

I’m unsure how to put my feelings towards this book into words。。。 Beautiful writing, wondrous world-building, Laini Taylor is definitely an amazing talent。 I loved Karou, one of the most intriguing protagonists I’ve read about。 The setting, Zuzanna, all of it was super good。 However, Akiva’s character fell flat with me。 He was uninteresting and really just。。。 bland。 And I didn’t like the way he and Karou just immediately clicked with no build up。 Even though it was explained why, I still felt ha I’m unsure how to put my feelings towards this book into words。。。 Beautiful writing, wondrous world-building, Laini Taylor is definitely an amazing talent。 I loved Karou, one of the most intriguing protagonists I’ve read about。 The setting, Zuzanna, all of it was super good。 However, Akiva’s character fell flat with me。 He was uninteresting and really just。。。 bland。 And I didn’t like the way he and Karou just immediately clicked with no build up。 Even though it was explained why, I still felt hardly any pull towards their relationship。 Not sure if I’ll be continuing the series, but if I do it’ll be for Karou and Karou alone。 。。。more

Not my favorite series, I felt like I got side tracked while reading this book a lot。 Although it had good plot and great backgrounds but it felt like it just kept dragging on I feel like now that everything is out, the story will finally begin in the second book, I won’t be in a rush to get it though。

。。。more

I stumbled across this book at my local bookstore and fell in love with the covers。 Decided to give this series a go, especially after reading all the amazing reviews。 Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who didn't love this story。 I found the chimera really hard to visualize and found the instant love and instant trust both main characters had a little annoying (or too easy even)。 I still gave this book three stars, as the writing is beautiful, and I did enjoy the romance aspect of the story I stumbled across this book at my local bookstore and fell in love with the covers。 Decided to give this series a go, especially after reading all the amazing reviews。 Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who didn't love this story。 I found the chimera really hard to visualize and found the instant love and instant trust both main characters had a little annoying (or too easy even)。 I still gave this book three stars, as the writing is beautiful, and I did enjoy the romance aspect of the story。 I won't however read the rest of the books in this series。 。。。more

Hmmm。 So I’m not sure what I can say about this book。 Maybe I was distracted reading it? But honestly this was allll over the place for me。 I was so lost or confused through out a lot of the chapters。 I love the idea of the premise, gave me total Crescent City or Crave vibes, even a little of The Mummy。 But like, what’s happening?! Lol I liked it enough to try book 2。 Hoping it’s better paced and makes a bit more sense to me。

The writing is very good, I like how dinamic the characters felt but I was a little desappointed with the plot, it made sense after the ending my I missed being torn into the story and feeling that connection with the characters I was expecting great things from this one, specially because it was set in Prague but the story didn't catch my breath。 3。5 This book was a rollercoaster!! Have you ever asked yourself, do monsters make war, or does war make monsters? Hmmmmmmm。。。。。I don't know why this book didn't absolutely click for me。 I mean, there was a lot I loved! What took me so long to read this。 My only complaint is the usual begging that authors make their character 21。 This reads as a “New Adult” book and it was hard to actually believe she was a 17 year old in high school and could’ve easily been replaced with her in college。 Especially with both men in the book being much older than her。

I love Laini Taylor, but I didn't pick this book/series up for some reason?! Until now。 I loved the characters, especially the Elsewhere characters, and when Karou finds out about her origins, the "something is missing"/mysterious strong feelings or certainty about situations all makes sense in the best way without being trite。 It's brilliant。 I listened on audiobook, as I almost always do now, which made my revelry in word choices and single sentences more limited (I did that with Muse and Stra I love Laini Taylor, but I didn't pick this book/series up for some reason?!
