There was something about this one that pulled me in right from the start。 I think it was the way the story was told, Dora is an unflinchingly honest narrator and at times it read like she was confessing her sins。 I loved that aspect, it felt so juicy and gossipy and throw in her fascinating backstory and I was hooked。 Dora experiences some confusion throughout the book and there were some times that I was confused as well。 Things shift about halfway through and although I was a little lost I ju There was something about this one that pulled me in right from the start。 I think it was the way the story was told, Dora is an unflinchingly honest narrator and at times it read like she was confessing her sins。 I loved that aspect, it felt so juicy and gossipy and throw in her fascinating backstory and I was hooked。 Dora experiences some confusion throughout the book and there were some times that I was confused as well。 Things shift about halfway through and although I was a little lost I just went with it and I’m glad I did because I feel like it all paid off in the end。 There were so many surprises in the back half that entertained me。 Were they the most shocking and well executed twists ever? No, but they were so fun! I think if you just go along for the ride this was such an addictive popcorn style thriller。 Don’t get too caught up in the details and just settle in for a pretty wicked time。 。。。more

Started off slow,, really enjoyed the middle, the end was a bit far fetched。 But overall, decent read。 The audiobook accents were sometimes frustrating。 Should have sped it up。

Anita

Very psychologically dark characters and story twists that kept me interested the entire book。

Brilliantly written yet again but I personally found the content a bit grim - not one to read if you need an uplifting story。

I enjoyed the story

I was very fortunate to meet Adele Parks when she interviewed myself and Sarah Ferguson for the paperback launch of our first book together, Her Heart for a Compass。 At the time, I was reading another of Adele’s books, Lies, Lies, Lies, and commented on how tricky it was to write an empathetic but unlikeable main protagonist。 ‘Wait until you read my new book’, she said。 I was fascinated to discover that she was writing a sex worker as the main character, and that she had actually spoken to a num I was very fortunate to meet Adele Parks when she interviewed myself and Sarah Ferguson for the paperback launch of our first book together, Her Heart for a Compass。 At the time, I was reading another of Adele’s books, Lies, Lies, Lies, and commented on how tricky it was to write an empathetic but unlikeable main protagonist。 ‘Wait until you read my new book’, she said。 I was fascinated to discover that she was writing a sex worker as the main character, and that she had actually spoken to a number of real sex workers as part of her research。 Sadly, we didn’t have much time to discuss it。 So I’ve read the book! Dora is an escort and the main narrator。 The book is told in first person, a style that personally I really enjoy when it’s done well (as this one is) but I know that a lot of people struggle with it。 Dora is a really, really well-drawn character。 She’s tough, she’s pragmatic, she’s realistic。 She’s her own woman, despite the fact that she earns her living being whatever kind of woman the men who pay her wish her to be。 She’s self-sufficient, she’s emotionally withdrawn, she doesn’t engage with the world, but she’s not cold, she’s not lacking emotion。 She makes her own rules, she runs her own life。 She seems to tell it as it is。 Seems to。 This is clever。 You think Dora is being open with you。 You think because she’s blunt, because she doesn’t try to pretty up her life, because she describes herself as a whore, that she’s telling you the truth about herself。 Of course she isn’t。 Of course, we’re being told the story through her eyes。 Of course, that means that there’s more to the story。 And yet Adele Parks makes you forget this possibility。 She lures you into to Dora’s point of view。 So when the secrets start to come out, they’re a shock。 There are lots of secrets。 There’s lots of twists and turns。 There’s a back story that surprises。 There’s a front story that shocks。 It’s pacy。 It’s a classic page turner。 It’s a a difficult book to read at times, because Dora won’t let you feel sorry for her, and her life is often pitiable。 You’re torn。 Do you wish her a fairy tale ending? Do you condemn some of her choices? You ought to, but you can’t。 That’s how well told it is。 You get her。 You can see why she’s done what she’s done。 Why she is what she is。 Why she does what she does。 I did guess one of the bit twists towards the end, but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment。 I didn’t guess it all。 It didn’t matter。 It wasn’t about guessing, it was about going on the journey, taking every step with your eyes wide and bated breath。 It was about wishing and hoping that the story would go a different way but knowing it couldn’t。 There was a sense of inevitability about some aspect of it that stayed true to Dora’s character, but it was not predictable。 And the ending? Bravo Adele Parks for that! Was it an ending or a beginning? I loved it。 I was given a copy of the book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 All views and opinions are my own。 。。。more

Thank you to Harper Collins for this ARC。 This book just wasn’t for me。 So much of it was just not even close to believable。 And the writing was sub-par at best。 Pretty much every circumstance in this book was poorly thought out。 Like I said, not even close to believable, at all。

One Last Secret is a compelling thriller with a great main character。 As an escort, Dora has rules in place to keep her safe。 However, after one traumatizing encounter, Dora agrees to marry her best friend and leave escorting behind。 That is until a client offers her double the going rate to pretend to be his girlfriend in the south of France。 Even though she’s looking at a future of financial security, Dora is not quite ready to lose her independence, so she accepts this as her last job。 What c One Last Secret is a compelling thriller with a great main character。 As an escort, Dora has rules in place to keep her safe。 However, after one traumatizing encounter, Dora agrees to marry her best friend and leave escorting behind。 That is until a client offers her double the going rate to pretend to be his girlfriend in the south of France。 Even though she’s looking at a future of financial security, Dora is not quite ready to lose her independence, so she accepts this as her last job。 What could go wrong? Well, a lot, it seems。 Almost as soon as she arrives。 This page-turner mainly follows Dora’s pov and alternates timelines。 This was my first time reading an Adele Parks book, and it did not disappoint。 Dora’s character was so well done and had me rooting for her the entire time。 I saw the big reveal coming a mile away, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment。 It is slightly OTT, which I know some readers don’t like, but it worked fine for me。 Usually, when reading, I’m very aware of what page I’m on and how many pages are left to go in the chapter or the book。 But this one captured my complete attention。 I will definitely try this author again in the future。 Thank you to MIRA for providing an arc via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review。 https://booksandwheels。com 。。。more

I enjoyed this book and was hooked from the first page! It is such a fun read and the writing kept me so entertained! The main character was relatable and hilarious, despite some unfortunate circumstances。 There is a flashback in the middle of the book, taking you back 11 years and then it all comes together to a shocking ending!!

3。5/5 Another great offering from the wonderfully talented Adele Parks。 Whilst the twists weren't that surprising and were quite guessable, the story itself flowed well and it was an enjoyable time。 The main character Dora was a little annoying at times, although that seems to have been the intention。 Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 3。5/5 Another great offering from the wonderfully talented Adele Parks。 Whilst the twists weren't that surprising and were quite guessable, the story itself flowed well and it was an enjoyable time。 The main character Dora was a little annoying at times, although that seems to have been the intention。 Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This is my first Adele Parks and I am blown away。 At the start, I was wondering where the long intro is heading to。 Honestly, I did not expect to read a never-ending detail of how this lady became an escort。 All the details started to make me lose interest, but I persevered and continued。 It sure was worth it as the story progressed with unexpected twists and turns!Teodora is the aforementioned escort and it started with how she came into this escort business, what she had suffered and endured, This is my first Adele Parks and I am blown away。 At the start, I was wondering where the long intro is heading to。 Honestly, I did not expect to read a never-ending detail of how this lady became an escort。 All the details started to make me lose interest, but I persevered and continued。 It sure was worth it as the story progressed with unexpected twists and turns!Teodora is the aforementioned escort and it started with how she came into this escort business, what she had suffered and endured, how she became so well-trained and making good money。 However, as it progresses, she started to lose control and was set-up to lose everything。 When her best friend, Evan, proposed to her, I did think that the culprit could be him。 However, the story changed and turned back time to way before。。。 when she got pregnant。。。 definitely a curve ball。 More mystery ensued and more headaches for me as I tried to grasp it all! A rollercoaster ride indeed with that sinister ending and then the epilogue。。。 another dramatic twist which could lead to book 2!Oh wow。。。 this is one helluva book! I truly applaud the author; she sure has such a vengeful imagination! The vividness of it all was so surreal with one secret led to another secret and then another! I did enjoy it overall but there was only one setback for me as I got confused。。。 it's good to have an indicator when the chapter starts going back time or onto another person's POV。 Maybe I didn't notice it as I am reading it on my old Kobo Touch without backlight and with small fonts。 Other than that, thanks to Edelweiss and the publishers for this chance to read an entertaining novel! 。。。more

The first 3/4 of this book I found quite uninspiring。 It did however get more interesting towards the end, as the plot twisted。 Not my favourite Adele Parks。

While it started out as a job of desperation, Dora has been working as an escort for years and she has no intention of stopping。 However when she gets engaged, she knows it's time for her career to come to an end。 Accepting one last job in a French chateau, things are not as they seem and Dora begins to realise that this mistake may be her last。 The first half of this book was enjoyable, though didn't make a huge impact。 The ending, that's where the wow factor came in。 There were twists and turn While it started out as a job of desperation, Dora has been working as an escort for years and she has no intention of stopping。 However when she gets engaged, she knows it's time for her career to come to an end。 Accepting one last job in a French chateau, things are not as they seem and Dora begins to realise that this mistake may be her last。 The first half of this book was enjoyable, though didn't make a huge impact。 The ending, that's where the wow factor came in。 There were twists and turns and honestly things I had no idea were coming, but I was so relieved that there was much more to the book than I first thought。 That being said, I don't think the ending was enough to really push this book up into a must-read and make up for the first 3/4s。 。。。more
