Overall, this was quite a disappointing read。 I was intrigued by the premise, but the way this was executed was underwhelming。 I could appreciate the amount of research and detail that went into the making of this novel。 However, after a while, the dense swathes of information overpowered my engagement with the story itself。 Having to slog through the last 100 pages made the dramatic final reveal fall flat。

Would prefer to give it a 1。5, instead of a 1, - but alas, I'm stymied by the goodreads rating system。I did not like this book。 Despite hearing reviewers and others rave about this book, it was very hard for me to get into。 I think some problems stemmed from the huge number of characters in the cast。 If you weren't familiar with the literary/film origins in which some of these characters were pulled, as a reader, I feel a lot of characterization was lost and it was harder to file them away in my Would prefer to give it a 1。5, instead of a 1, - but alas, I'm stymied by the goodreads rating system。I did not like this book。 Despite hearing reviewers and others rave about this book, it was very hard for me to get into。 I think some problems stemmed from the huge number of characters in the cast。 If you weren't familiar with the literary/film origins in which some of these characters were pulled, as a reader, I feel a lot of characterization was lost and it was harder to file them away in my mind。 Often I found myself googling names, like "Merrick", the "Elephant Man" in order to gain more context。 Sometimes I just forgot the names of characters (ex: Krolock)。 The writing style was also a little above my reading level。 The way the book is written makes it sounds very "Victorian" in vibe。 And I found myself having to pay extra special attention to who was speaking and who was being referred to, since the epithets weren't exactly clear。 While the world building was good, I felt a lot of the plot was filler。 The characters Charles Beauregard and Geneviève Dieudonné were some of the deeper characters who got some interesting characterization and meaningful plot lines。 But largely it felt like I was wading through a lot of book for very little satisfaction / payoff。 My copy of the book included an alternate ending that I just did not read。 Not sure if it was supposed to be part of the story or not as a gimmick。 But once I got to the end of the main story。。。 I was like: I'm done。 。。。more

My only complaint about this book is that for having "Dracula" in the title, it's a bit of a misnomer because most of the book is about Jack the Ripper, while interspersed with the story of Bram Stoker's Dracula characters。Throw in random names like Beatrix Potter, Gilbert, and a few others, and you can wonder where the Dracula storyline is。I still enjoy it though。 My only complaint about this book is that for having "Dracula" in the title, it's a bit of a misnomer because most of the book is about Jack the Ripper, while interspersed with the story of Bram Stoker's Dracula characters。Throw in random names like Beatrix Potter, Gilbert, and a few others, and you can wonder where the Dracula storyline is。I still enjoy it though。 。。。more

4-4。5*Such books seem a bit lazy, with most characters and plot threads borrowed from elsewhere。 But making a coherent book out of so many bits is not easy, and it is done quite well here。 The plot is a bit thin - in the sense there are things happening around the central story which itself is rather simple。 But it flows very well and not once does it overplay its hand even when incorporating characters that nowadays seem dated like Fu Manchu

I have only just finished this and my initial impressions may change as I think more about it - it's late and I'm grumpy, after all。 That said。。。(Strap in everyone, I'm about to have long-winded and pompously-articulated thoughts about my special interest)This is a very impressive display of the author's vast knowledge of fin de siecle fiction and the horror genre in general。 I have a whole Masters degree in Victorian literature, and I only picked up some of the references。But that's the problem I have only just finished this and my initial impressions may change as I think more about it - it's late and I'm grumpy, after all。 That said。。。(Strap in everyone, I'm about to have long-winded and pompously-articulated thoughts about my special interest)This is a very impressive display of the author's vast knowledge of fin de siecle fiction and the horror genre in general。 I have a whole Masters degree in Victorian literature, and I only picked up some of the references。But that's the problem really - it was all reference, without any actual meaningful engagement with the source material。 Among other things, Dracula is a novel about reverse colonialism: a Victorian terror of the "primitive", foreign Other turning the tables on the civilised British Empire。 The colonizers becoming the colonized, essentially。 Dracula is a complex reflection of a nation's racism and its growing anxiety and uncertainty about its own place in a swiftly changing, increasingly globalised society。 Stories about terrifying, savage monsters from abroad invading Britain, threatening its values and its women (chiefly, of course, Victoria), are big at the end of the nineteenth century。 Newman is obviously very aware of this, and his novel reflects these themes throughout。 But it's all mimicry and recreation。 There's no commentary here that a Victorian could not have produced。 Confused discussion of "bloodlines" and the appearance of eugenicist Dr Moreau certainly *engage* with the issues, but they don't do anything remotely interesting or subversive with it。 It's just *there*。In his postscript, Newman says that "Stoker allegorises Dracula's assault on Britain entirely as an attack on the Victorian family, an emblem of all the things he prized and saw as fragile"。 He therefore sees his version, wherein Dracula wins and takes over Britain, as a novel elaboration of a largely untapped theme。 I think this approach is massively reductive。 An article I quite like on this topic (it's from 1990 so about the same time that this novel was written, I think) called "The Occidental Tourist: "Dracula" and the Anxiety of Reverse Colonization" by Stephen Arata, is a fun one to read on this subject - it details the complexities of all of the political and social anxieties which are very much already present in Dracula, and which do not all centre on the family (though I will grant you that angle is prominent)。 I also hate how my girl Lucy Westenra is portrayed in this, as a silly, thoughtless, rather malicious flirt (sure she's dead before the novel starts, but her memory incites much of the plot)。 I always feel that Lucy is badly served in adaptations of Dracula, so Newman is not doing anything worse than following the crowd here, but it's still frustrating。 It's a classic piece of misogyny disguised as progressiveness。 There are two types of women, you see, and only two - silly, frivolous society girls we are to despise, and competent action women whom we are to admire。 There's Lucy and Mina。 There's Penelope, and then there's Genevieve。 Once again, I think Newman is attempting to engage with his source material here。 When silly, self-absorbed Penelope is turned into a vampire, she dons man's clothes and loses interest in her appearance。 When we finally meet Mina, also now a vampire, we are told that her turn has caused her to lose "any feminine softness"; she now looks like a "principle boy"。 This all plays into that all-pervading fear of the Other and their influence - "look what these foreign degenerates are doing to our WoMEn!!!!" But Newman does absolutely nothing interesting with this idea other than use it - it's recreation rather than critical engagement。In the postscript, Newman explains that part of his purpose in writing this was "to mix things I felt about the 1980s, when the British Government made 'Victorian Values' a slogan, with the real and imagined 1880s, when blood was flowing in the fog and there was widespread social unrest"。 I think this is super interesting, and I can certainly see elements of this in the novel。 But there is so much that he could have done here which he just 。。。 Doesn't。 It's just too weighed down with its endless parade of shout-outs and cameos。I do also think it's slightly creepy to have the love-interest of our 30-something hero be a girl with the appearance of a sixteen-year old。 She may be a centuries-old vampire, but she's still literally described as looking like a child。 It's weird, dude。So, overall, I wasn't a fan of this。 But perhaps I'm just grumpy that Sherlock Holmes wasn't in it。。。 。。。more

But it adds to that the idea that a whole bunch of other vampire stories, mostly obscure ones from the 19th century, were also "true", so Dracula is surrounded by a wide variety of other fictional vampires。 And then some other, non-vampire stories also happened, so we get Mycroft Holmes, Danny Dravot, and so on。 And then, to top it all off, Jack The Ripper。 Does that seem like too much? It isn't - Newman masterfully weaves almost all of it together。 It certainly helps that most of the elements borrowed from older stories are shown off-screen, as it were。 Dracula only appears at the very end, and while Mycroft is important, that's because one of the main characters works for him。 In fact, the only part of Anno Dracula that didn't work for me was the largely gratuitous introduction of Doctor Moreau & Doctor Jekyll。 They didn't really serve a purpose in the story, other than to remind me that this was a pastiche。 So what's Anno Dracula all about? In a Britain run by tyrannical vampires, the one ethical vampire works with a living spy to hunt Jack The Ripper。 Seems simple enough, right? And while that is the main plot, Anno Dracula is less about story than it is about character and social change。 Newman does something that I very much admire - he commits to the bit, as it were, and looks at how society would change if vampirism were real, and becoming widespread。 Smart, compulsively readable, and full of Easter Eggs for 19th century lit nerds, Anno Dracula is a must-read。 。。。more

Eh。 Somewhat compelling in a very pulpy way, but ultimately pretty unsatisfying。 Definitely not good enough to make up for the casual racism and misogyny, not to mention the extremely unnecessary and disturbing homophobia。 And even aside from all that, this book is way too long。 There are so many plot threads that go nowhere and ultimately mean nothing。

Loved it, didn’t love the ending。 progression was slow。 The way the chapters were written, it was kind of confusing on who they were talking about。
