Summary

'I swear I'm one bad mood away from calling it black magic and going home 。 。 。'

Detective Sergeant Washington Poe can count on one hand the number of friends he has。 And he'd still have his thumb left。 There's the insanely brilliant, guilelessly innocent civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw of course。 He's known his beleaguered boss, Detective Inspector Stephanie Flynn for years as he has his nearest neighbour, full-time shepherd/part-time dog sitter, Victoria。

And then there's Estelle Doyle。 It's true the caustic pathologist has never walked down the sunny side of the street but this time has she gone too far? Shot to twice in the head, her father's murder appears to be an open and shut case。 Estelle has firearms discharge residue on her hands, and, in a house surrounded by fresh snow, hers are the only footprints going in。 Since her arrest she's only said three words: 'Tell Washington Poe。'

Meanwhile, a poisoner the press have dubbed the Botanist is sending high profile celebrities poems and pressed flowers。 The killer seems to be able to walk through walls and, despite the advance notice he gives his victims, and regardless of the security measures the police take, he seems to be able to kill with impunity。

For a man who hates locked room mysteries, this is going to be the longest week of Washington Poe's life 。 。 。

Wow! What a terrifying yet fantastic ride that was! 2 mysteries for Poe to solve, unparallelled wit and sarcasm from Tilly and Flynn and we finally get to see another side of Poe! This is definitely my favourite in the series- I especially loved the short chapters, they keep the story moving on and are responsible for my gritty eyes and terrible book hangover! Roll on 2023!

What is there to say? They just get better and better! Poe & Bradshaw are hands down the most brilliant characters in a book I have ever come across and I hope the author Mike never stops writing books with them in。 Clever, laugh out loud funny, dramatic, suspenseful and most of all unputdownable!!

Once I got into this, I had to keep going。 Most books I can put down and return later, but not this one。

Another cracking good readI so enjoy reading these books。 Washington Poe makes a great detective around which to set yet another exciting hunt for a monstrous psychopath。 A masterful story teller

A fun read。 It has likeable characters and good banter and humour to contrast the relatively dark events of the story。 Overall lots to enjoy, although at times the story stretches credibility, and the ending doesn’t quite deliver the impact the early set-up promises。 The main story follows Detective Sergeant Washington Poe and his computer / science nerdy colleague Tilly Bradshaw as they investigate a series of poisonings of noted and notorious public figures by a mystery man dubbed The Botanist A fun read。 It has likeable characters and good banter and humour to contrast the relatively dark events of the story。 Overall lots to enjoy, although at times the story stretches credibility, and the ending doesn’t quite deliver the impact the early set-up promises。 The main story follows Detective Sergeant Washington Poe and his computer / science nerdy colleague Tilly Bradshaw as they investigate a series of poisonings of noted and notorious public figures by a mystery man dubbed The Botanist。These are essentially locked room killings where it’s not obvious how they were killed。 A large chunk of the book is the (well-researched and plausible) science of how it could be done。 It’s partly guessable (there’s an easy to spot McGuffin at each death), but there’s still enough cleverness around the science part that it’s still fun to read。There’s then a secondary plot involving Estelle Doyle, the professor / pathologist who has appeared in previous books, and who gets Poe hot under the collar。 Her father has been found murdered, and she’s been locked up for it。 This turns into another locked room mystery which Poe investigates。 We get a lot more of Estelle’s character in this book, particularly her family history。 This set-up was a bit implausible, but not enough to spoil the story。 And she’s a fun character who brings out a different side to Poe。 It’s fast paced, with the action moving along swiftly。 There’s a good amount of humour and warmth to the characters。 I enjoyed most of the twists, though it sometimes feels over done, especially towards the end。 There’s so many twists, you start to expect them。 Which takes away the point of the twist。 This also makes the ending feel very drawn out。 The eventual resolution of the story, and a reveal about who else was involved didn’t quite live up to the fun premise set up at the start。 However, still enjoyed the read。 Good entry in this series。 If you enjoyed the previous books, this ones keeps the quality level high。 。。。more

I am a huge fan of the Washington Poe series so I was so excited to be taking this one on holiday with me。 I must say …this is one of the cleverest ones in the series yet (my opinion of course)。I loved the two-pronged plot in this book and how it became a lot more personal than usual。 The first plot follows pathologist Estelle Doyle (One of my favorite characters) and the murder charges she faces for killing her father。 The second plot is the investigation into a serial killer who calls themselv I am a huge fan of the Washington Poe series so I was so excited to be taking this one on holiday with me。 I must say …this is one of the cleverest ones in the series yet (my opinion of course)。I loved the two-pronged plot in this book and how it became a lot more personal than usual。 The first plot follows pathologist Estelle Doyle (One of my favorite characters) and the murder charges she faces for killing her father。 The second plot is the investigation into a serial killer who calls themselves The Botanist。 I adored how we see a different, more personal side of Poe in this one。 He’s always been fiercely protective of those closest to him but rarely opens himself up and I feel that in The Botanist we saw a teeny bit more of this。 Poe is such a determined character and so intelligent and insightful at his job – I like that he has no airs and graces or snobby opinions but really is loyal and dedicated officer/team member。 Alongside him, Tilly is a brutally honest and unearthly clever and Flint remains as sarcastic as before and together they make a formidable team。 I can never get enough of the three of them (although more Tilly please)。 The Botanist appears as an unsolvable series of murders and I didn’t have clue where this was going to go at all。 M。 W。 Craven is some sort of evil genius and the level of research that goes into his novels to enable to plot come together seamlessly at exactly the right time。 You need such specific knowledge of Botany and biology to even begin to make sensible guesses on this one but why would you want to know。 The biggest fun and thrill from The Botanist (and other Poe novels) is the journey and the twists and turns along the way。The Botanist is a masterpiece in crime writing – original plot, fabulous characters with great chemistry, and hilarious information from Tilly that just manages to balance a little bit of the dark mood。 I cannot recommend this book/series enough。 Get it on your Christmas list, use your Waterstone points or just buy it because it’s bloody brilliant。 。。。more

So how can Poe and his team solve two locked room mysteries? One of the most for me interesting part of this book was the amount of detail in the forensics。 It must have demanded a huge amount of research。 And alongside all the tension and drama is the interplay by the characters that jump off the page to you。 Sarcasm, wit and humour go to make this a most enjoyable read。 I loved this clever, ingeniously plotted book。 Two incredibly intriguing mysteries。 I was gripped from start to finish。 A real page turner。 I cannot recommend this book too highly。 Don’t miss this one。------Reviewer: Lizzie Sirett 。。。more

What I love about the Poe novels is the moment of the crime before the main novel starts and this time it feels like two crimes are committed on opposite sides of the planet so you know Team Poe is going to have their work cut out for them。 Poe has two distinctive cases to solve but it seems the focus of one may be affecting his focus of the other。 I found this volume of Poe’s adventures to be somewhat more stop-start in the beginning and not flowing as well as some of the previous tales。 Craven What I love about the Poe novels is the moment of the crime before the main novel starts and this time it feels like two crimes are committed on opposite sides of the planet so you know Team Poe is going to have their work cut out for them。 Poe has two distinctive cases to solve but it seems the focus of one may be affecting his focus of the other。 I found this volume of Poe’s adventures to be somewhat more stop-start in the beginning and not flowing as well as some of the previous tales。 Craven has satirised a list of c-list celebs throughout this novel and made them the victims of the serial killer which is both humorous and a little concerning for his own motives。 The Botanist, as an antagonist, feels like the Professor Moriarty to Poe’s Sherlock Holmes; a villain who grows in notoriety as the novel picks up pace。 The Botanist twists and turns right to the epilogue which leaves you wondering what Poe and Tilly will get up to next time。 。。。more
