Number One Is Walking is Steve Martin’s cinematic legacy―an illustrated memoir of his legendary acting career, with stories from his most popular films and artwork by New Yorker cartoonist Harry Bliss。

Steve Martin has never written about his career in the movies before。 In Number One Is Walking, he shares anecdotes from the sets of his beloved films―Father of the Bride, Roxanne, The Jerk, Three Amigos, and many more―bringing readers directly into his world。 He shares charming tales of antics, moments of inspiration, and exploits with the likes of Paul McCartney, Diane Keaton, Harrison Ford, and Chevy Chase。 Martin details his forty years in the movie biz, as well as his stand-up comedy, banjo playing, writing, and cartooning, all with his unparalleled wit。

This book is just as funny and insightful as you would expect from Steve Martin, especially in comic book form! I loved the illustrations。 No one tells a story quite like Steve Martin and yes he does know everyone in show business! I thank @CeladonBooks and @BlissCartoons for the opportunity to read and review this book。

Steve Martin has been a novelist, playwright, stand-up comedian, musician, and so much more。 But for many people, he is best loved as a man of the movies。 From his first movie, The Jerk, on through classics like The Three Amigos!, Roxanne, Father of the Bride, Housesitter, Bowfinger, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, he has stolen the hearts of movie lovers worldwide。 Now, he has opened up to share some of the stories of his years in movie making in Number One Is Walking, with illustrations f Steve Martin has been a novelist, playwright, stand-up comedian, musician, and so much more。 But for many people, he is best loved as a man of the movies。 From his first movie, The Jerk, on through classics like The Three Amigos!, Roxanne, Father of the Bride, Housesitter, Bowfinger, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, he has stolen the hearts of movie lovers worldwide。 Now, he has opened up to share some of the stories of his years in movie making in Number One Is Walking, with illustrations from Harry Bliss。 The first half of the book is Martin’s stories of working in Hollywood, illustrated with charming, whimsical drawings by Bliss。 He’s fishing with Bliss’s dog Penny when he reminisces about working on All of Me with Lily Tomlin and director Carl Reiner。 They’re driving around when Martin talks about the shooting of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles。 He said that John Candy had always made him laugh。 They spent a lot of time ad-libbing, so much so that John Hughes’ first cut of the movie was well over 4 hours long。 While Bliss chops wood for a fire, Martin talks about how he did Waiting for Godot Off-Broadway with Robin Williams, directed by Mike Nichols。 He talks about how he and Martin Short worshipped Diane Keaton in Father of the Bride。 He talks about being an evil dentist in two different films。 He shares how he met Jerry Springer backstage at a late night talk show。 And then he talks about why he stopped making movies。 The second half is a collection of comics from Bliss, but Martin’s humor is definitely there as well。 To me, it felt like these cartoons had come out of the time they spent together and the humor they share。 They are playful and sharp and surprising, with punch lines like, “I just blow-dried the cat。” There is a lot of love about Number One Is Walking。 It’s fun to see Martin revisit his movies and his friendships, and the illustrations add so much life。 But I have to be honest here。 As much as I enjoyed the stories and the comics, it’s Bliss’s dog Penny who steals the show。 Penny features in the stories a lot, adding smart comments or asking the perfect question at the right time, and I just couldn’t help but fall in love with the dog。 My only real disappointment with the book is that Martin only talks about certain movies。 He’s done a lot of films, and it would be a thick book if there were stories about them all。 I understand that。 But I fell deeply in love with L。A。 Story back in the day, and that didn’t get a mention。 And My Blue Heaven or Mixed Nuts? I adore both of those movies (I do realize not everyone does), but not one story about Nora Ephron? Basically, I loved this book。 I just wanted more of it。 A copy of Number One Is Walking was provided by Celadon Books, with many thanks。 。。。more

Steve Martin is hilarious even on paper。Comic/graphic novel memoirs are gaining popularity in recent years, and I am so glad someone as funny and talented as Steve Martin and Harry Bliss (respectively) join forces to create a Sunday comic-esque memoir of Mr。 Martin's funniest moments in the movie making world。 As cartoon Steve was regaling Harry and his dog Penny, (whom I adore and would love to have an intellectual chat with,) his most memorable moments of movie stardom, I could almost hear his Steve Martin is hilarious even on paper。Comic/graphic novel memoirs are gaining popularity in recent years, and I am so glad someone as funny and talented as Steve Martin and Harry Bliss (respectively) join forces to create a Sunday comic-esque memoir of Mr。 Martin's funniest moments in the movie making world。 As cartoon Steve was regaling Harry and his dog Penny, (whom I adore and would love to have an intellectual chat with,) his most memorable moments of movie stardom, I could almost hear his voice in my head as if he was taking straight to me。 As someone who grew up watching and loving his movies, if was so fun to hear about the behind the scenes stuff that no one can really know except those who were there。 And the art matched the vibe of the book perfectly! It was of course cartoonish, yet realistic enough to imagine the scenes playing out right before your eyes。 It also gave me nostalgia for Sunday mornings when my family would get the Sunday paper, and my dad and I would fight over who would read the comics first。 I would have loved to give this book 5 stars, except I felt a little cheated that less than half the book was Steve's anecdotes, while the rest was "Other Diversions," the majority of which consisted of single panel comic strips。 While the humor of course was still there, along with subtle pokes at society and at times a little thought provoking sub-context, I would have liked to learn more of Steve's life。All in all, this is a very entertaining book that I'm glad I got the chance to read, and to learn about the life of an excellent actor。Thank you to Celadon books for gifting me Number One is Walking, and all thoughts in this review are my own。Check out my bookstagram! @Witchy_Bookish_Otaku 。。。more

If you want a truly unique coffee table book, here you go。 If you want a unique walk through the life of a comic (and musical) superstar, well, you get that here as well。 The cartoon-style graphics alone are incredible, and when coupled with insights by one of America's best-known (and arguably best-loved) entertainers, it just doesn't get much better。My description will be brief, simply because this is a book that's better seen than talked about。 Basically, it outlines the experiences of the in If you want a truly unique coffee table book, here you go。 If you want a unique walk through the life of a comic (and musical) superstar, well, you get that here as well。 The cartoon-style graphics alone are incredible, and when coupled with insights by one of America's best-known (and arguably best-loved) entertainers, it just doesn't get much better。My description will be brief, simply because this is a book that's better seen than talked about。 Basically, it outlines the experiences of the incomparable Steve Martin in motion pictures - he made 40 of them before, about 15 years ago, leaving that industry for, among other things, a successful other career in music (he's a banjo player extraordinaire)。 His recollections of the movie years include clever and witty depictions of "The Jerk," "Three Amigos," Roxanne" and more; I just named three of my favorites。 All are depicted in cartoon format with amusing, sometimes downright funny, narratives。 Also included are references to many of his well-known partners in the funny business, like Carl Reiner, Robin Williams and Diane Keaton。 The whole thing ends with "And Other Diversions," an extensive series of cartoons。In short (which reminds me, his buddy and fellow comedian Martin Short is another who gets some page time here), this is a very well-written and perhaps even better-illustrated book I think any student of comedy - and certainly any Martin fan - will enjoy。 It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but why settle? This delightful book delivers the best of both。 Many thanks to the publisher, who sent me a hardcover pre-release copy to read and review。 。。。more

Number One is Walking is a quick read, mainly because it’s mostly comic strips with captions。 The book is actually a mostly fifty-fifty split between David Bliss doing comics that are supplemented by Steve Martin career highlights, combined with strips or individual panels done by Bliss that are (mostly) not related to Martin。 The Martin half of the book is definitely in line with his sense of humor, and readers and fans will enjoy it。 The unrelated cartoons are funny too, but looking at the tit Number One is Walking is a quick read, mainly because it’s mostly comic strips with captions。 The book is actually a mostly fifty-fifty split between David Bliss doing comics that are supplemented by Steve Martin career highlights, combined with strips or individual panels done by Bliss that are (mostly) not related to Martin。 The Martin half of the book is definitely in line with his sense of humor, and readers and fans will enjoy it。 The unrelated cartoons are funny too, but looking at the title and cover, I didn’t expect them to be such a large part of the book。 This means that readers expecting the whole book to be about Martin might end up feeling shorted (yes, it’s a comedy book and I couldn’t resist putting a joke of my own in the review)。 Some of the Bliss strips and panels I definitely enjoyed more than others, and Penny is collectively a winner in the Martin part, both for facts and funnies。 A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

NUMBER ONE IS WALKING is a highly entertaining non-fiction book in graphic novel format。 It features Steve Martin's reflections on his time working in different movies, primarily told as if he is conversing with the illustrator (who also sometimes appears in the panels) and/or the dog。 It is told as almost a series of vignettes from different movies he worked on and encounters he had。 The second half of the book is a series of brief cartoons about a variety of topics, but almost turn it into a c NUMBER ONE IS WALKING is a highly entertaining non-fiction book in graphic novel format。 It features Steve Martin's reflections on his time working in different movies, primarily told as if he is conversing with the illustrator (who also sometimes appears in the panels) and/or the dog。 It is told as almost a series of vignettes from different movies he worked on and encounters he had。 The second half of the book is a series of brief cartoons about a variety of topics, but almost turn it into a collection of comics。This is a really delightful format, and the illustrator is quite talented。 The panels really bring Martin and his stories to life on each page, and it really makes this a fun book to pick up and read。 While you can read it from start to finish, it's absolutely a good coffee table book in that you can open it to any page and get a laugh without reading sequentially。 Each of these vignettes is well-chosen, and the comics at the end also contain some really humorous selections! The whole book is highly entertaining with plenty of room for laughs。 This was a most pleasant read, and I would definitely recommend picking it up for a light-hearted diversion。Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

I'm a huge Steve Martin fan。 He has made me crack up for my whole life。 From his early stand up records, SNL appearances, and movies like The Jerk and The Three Amigos his silliness is unparalleled。 Over the years my fondness for him has grown。 All of Me, Parenthood, My Blue Heaven and Roxanne are all catalogued in my personal favorites ever category。 This second collaboration with Harry Bliss highlights all the things I love about Steve: it's smart, witty, creative, and has a lot of heart。 I'm a huge Steve Martin fan。 He has made me crack up for my whole life。 From his early stand up records, SNL appearances, and movies like The Jerk and The Three Amigos his silliness is unparalleled。 Over the years my fondness for him has grown。 All of Me, Parenthood, My Blue Heaven and Roxanne are all catalogued in my personal favorites ever category。 This second collaboration with Harry Bliss highlights all the things I love about Steve: it's smart, witty, creative, and has a lot of heart。 。。。more
