Summary

Librarian's note: An alternate cover edition can be found here

In 1976, a uniquely seductive world of vampires was unveiled in the now-classic Interview with the Vampire 。 。 。 in 1985, a wild and voluptous voice spoke to us, telling the story of The Vampire Lestat。  In The Queen of the Damned, Anne Rice continues her extraordinary "Vampire Chronicles" in a feat of mesmeric storytelling, a chillingly hypnotic entertainment in which the oldest and most powerful forces of the night are unleashed on an unsuspecting world。

Three brilliantly colored narrative threads intertwine as the story unfolds:

- The rock star known as Vampire Lestat, worshipped by millions of spellbound fans, prepares for a concert in San Francisco。  Among the audience--pilgrims in a blind swoon of adoration--are hundreds of vampires, creatures who see Lestat as a "greedy fiend risking the secret prosperity of all his kind just to be loved and seen by mortals," fiends themselves who hate Lestat's power and who are determined to destroy him 。 。 。

- The sleep of certain men and women--vampires and mortals scattered around the world--is haunted by a vivid, mysterious dream: of twins with fiery red hair and piercing green eyes who suffer an unspeakable tragedy。  It is a dream that slowly, tauntingly reveals its meaning to the dreamers as they make their way toward each other--some to be destroyed on the journey, some to face an even more terrifying fate at journey's end 。 。 。

- Akasha--Queen of the Damned, mother of all vampires, rises after a 6,000 year sleep and puts into motion a heinous plan to "save" mankind from itself and make "all myths of the world real" by elevating herself and her chosen son/lover to the level of the gods: "I am the fulfillment and I shall from this moment be the cause" 。 。 。

These narrative threads wind sinuously across a vast, richly detailed tapestry of the violent, sensual world of vampirism, taking us back 6,000 years to its beginnings。  As the stories of the "first brood" of blood drinkers are revealed, we are swept across the ages, from Egypt to South America to the Himalayas to all the shrouded corners of the globe where vampires have left their mark。 Vampires are created--mortals succumbing to the sensation of "being enptied, of being devoured, of being nothing。" Vampires are destroyed。  Dark rituals are performed--the rituals of ancient creatures prowling the modern world。  And, finally, we are brought to a moment in the twentieth century when, in an astonishing climax, the fate of the living dead--and perhaps of the living, all the living--will be decided。

At the beginning this book felt very disjointed but as the story progressed it started to all become clear。 I can’t say this was my favorite in the series but I will carry in at some point。

I first read this so long ago, that I forgot how truly breathtaking it was。 This book is exquisite。

I read most of the Vampire Chronicles books 10 years ago but somehow never managed to read this one until now。 Not sure if this series hits different after being older/after living in San Francisco for nearly a decade but this book had everything I love about this series — hypnotic prose, dreamy atmosphere, highly flawed but relatable characters, and a story that flies so quickly you have to force yourself to slow down, so you can linger in the magic a little longer。

When I found out that there was going to be a series based on the Vampire Chronicles I decided to do some re-reads。 I had read and stopped at this book years ago, and indeed there is so much I realize I didn't catch。 Sadly, the movie did not do it a bit of justice。 I wanted to know about so many of the others like Maharet, Marius, Khayman, and even the twisted Akasha。 I was not disappointed。 It is a long book, but well worth the time and investment。 When I found out that there was going to be a series based on the Vampire Chronicles I decided to do some re-reads。 I had read and stopped at this book years ago, and indeed there is so much I realize I didn't catch。 Sadly, the movie did not do it a bit of justice。 I wanted to know about so many of the others like Maharet, Marius, Khayman, and even the twisted Akasha。 I was not disappointed。 It is a long book, but well worth the time and investment。 。。。more

Three and a half stars。Cannibals, witches, androcidal rampage, punishment rape, delusions of grandeur… There is a lot going on in this book。 The Vampire origin story is fleshed out (pardon the pun)。 Lestat has immeasurably increased his power by drinking the blood of Akaska。 The band The Vampire Lestat sucks。

1。5An unnecessary book, boring, tedious, and bland with only a few redeemable parts (primarily the story of the twins)。 I don't give it a lower rating simply because it isn't as bad as some of the other books I've given one star to (I wish there were the possibility to rate a book with zero stars)。 This story could have been told in one hundred pages。 There is no need for more pages to tell the "important" and interesting parts of it。 Finally, the main antagonist, oh my god, for a being 6000 yea 1。5An unnecessary book, boring, tedious, and bland with only a few redeemable parts (primarily the story of the twins)。 I don't give it a lower rating simply because it isn't as bad as some of the other books I've given one star to (I wish there were the possibility to rate a book with zero stars)。 This story could have been told in one hundred pages。 There is no need for more pages to tell the "important" and interesting parts of it。 Finally, the main antagonist, oh my god, for a being 6000 years old, it sure sounds a lot like some of today's most extreme left-leaning people。 。。。more

This is going to be one of my longer reviews as I have too many thoughts that took a lot of time to form: for starters the first quarter of this was nearly impossible to get through because I was bored & confused。。。 at this point is where I looked up other reviews to help my understanding which was the way to go。 Without the first quarter of the book you would not have the proper character development or the answers for the story itself, that being said I also want to highlight why everyone thin This is going to be one of my longer reviews as I have too many thoughts that took a lot of time to form: for starters the first quarter of this was nearly impossible to get through because I was bored & confused。。。 at this point is where I looked up other reviews to help my understanding which was the way to go。 Without the first quarter of the book you would not have the proper character development or the answers for the story itself, that being said I also want to highlight why everyone thinks Baby Jenks is pointless as a character which she basically is: She's only connected into the story through Lestat's train of thought of her final moments。 So people can understand why she's a character if they are also struggling to understand what's going on。The rest of the book was great! It's faster paced。 I almost wish there was a separate book just on the twins as I was so intrigued by their story。 The book isn't for everyone clearly, but it is definitely a good read if your willing to deep dive into the story, character development, world building & so forth。 。。。more

This is closer to a traditional story than the first two autobiographically-styled Vampire Chronicles books, though still not quite traditional since a good chunk of it is backstory。 I liked pretty much everything about it: from the delicious prose, to the fascinating cast of characters, to the exploration of the philosophy and psychology of vampires。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Hasta ahora mi favorito, simplemente no podia soltarlo; la mejor manera de describirlo lo hace la misma autora en palabras de uno de sus personajes: es una pesadilla, de la que no puedes despertar, te enamora y encanta, hasta que olvidas que estás en una pesadilla, y deseas su mundos deseas lo que son, pero sigue siendo una pesadilla。

This book is essentially The Avengers: Infinity War and End Game, all-in-one, but better。 In book 3, Akasha, the most powerful vampire, declares herself god, and so all the other vampires we have known and loved come together in resistance。 But between the two sides, there is Lestat, who dreams like Akasha but loves like the other vampires。 The character work in this book is very complex, and it's intellectually stimulating when the vampires argue against Akasha's philosophy。 Again, I'm in awe o This book is essentially The Avengers: Infinity War and End Game, all-in-one, but better。 In book 3, Akasha, the most powerful vampire, declares herself god, and so all the other vampires we have known and loved come together in resistance。 But between the two sides, there is Lestat, who dreams like Akasha but loves like the other vampires。 The character work in this book is very complex, and it's intellectually stimulating when the vampires argue against Akasha's philosophy。 Again, I'm in awe of how Anne Rice constructed these ancient characters。 The breadth and depth of their wisdom encompass all time and place, and yet they all turn out vastly different from each other。 It's incredible。This book, I think, is also the most horrifying one yet。 Not just the violence, but the understanding that a mind can imagine such cruelty and beyond while justifying itself, and the awareness of my own feelings regarding that violence。 No one invokes this balance of fear and fascination quite as well as Anne Rice。And then, the cherry on top that makes me give this 4。5 stars is simply the fact that the ending is so good。 I love it when a book takes time to wind down, and nothing makes me unwind like Louis and Lestat being petty and affectionate to each other。 Talking about end games, they are definitely one。 。。。more
