Summary

The internationally renowned, clinically tested, revolutionary diet program to lose weight, fight disease, and live a longer, healthier life。

Can what you eat determine how long, and how well, you live? The clinically proven answer is yes, and The Longevity Diet is easier to follow than you'd think。 The culmination of 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe, this unique program lays out a simple solution to living to a healthy old age through nutrition。 The key is combining the healthy everyday eating plan the book outlines, with the scientifically engineered fasting-mimicking diet, or FMD; the FMD, done just 3-4 times a year, does away with the misery and starvation most of us experience while fasting, allowing you to reap all the beneficial health effects of a restrictive diet, while avoiding negative stressors, like low energy and sleeplessness。 Valter Longo, director of the Longevity Institute at USC and the Program on Longevity and Cancer at IFOM in Milan, designed the FMD after making a series of remarkable discoveries in mice, then in humans, indicating that specific diets can activate stem cells and promote regeneration and rejuvenation in multiple organs to significantly reduce risk for diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's, and heart disease。 Longo's simple pescatarian daily eating plan and the periodic fasting-mimicking techniques can both yield impressive results。 Low in proteins and sugars and rich in healthy fats and plant-based foods, The Longevity Diet is proven to help you:

- Lose weight and reduce abdominal fat
- Extend your healthy lifespan with simple everyday changes
- Prevent age-related muscle and bone loss
- Build your resistance to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's and cancer

Longo's healthy, life span-extending program is based on an easy-to-adopt pescatarian plan along with the fasting-mimicking diet no more than 4 times a year, just 5 days at a time。 Including 30 easy recipes for an everyday diet based on Longo's five pillars of longevity, The Longevity Diet is the key to living a longer, healthier, more fulfilled life。

I think it was the most disappointing book I read this year。 A lot of self-promotion and long-winded explanation - all that could be summed up in maybe 3 pages and even better in one sentence - "Eat little, mostly plants"。 Boring。 I think it was the most disappointing book I read this year。 A lot of self-promotion and long-winded explanation - all that could be summed up in maybe 3 pages and even better in one sentence - "Eat little, mostly plants"。 Boring。 。。。more

Enjoyed this book。 I’m not an expert on eating for longevity。 I’ve studied it a bit and really found this book helpful and interesting。 Having studied nutrition and sports nutrition a bit I found the triggers for autophagy really intriguing and as a follower of Ori Hofmekler for many years I feel this book and the research Dr。 Longo has done also substantiates much of Ori’s views。 A little disappointing that it also was a bit of a sales pitch for his specially created and extremely pricey fastin Enjoyed this book。 I’m not an expert on eating for longevity。 I’ve studied it a bit and really found this book helpful and interesting。 Having studied nutrition and sports nutrition a bit I found the triggers for autophagy really intriguing and as a follower of Ori Hofmekler for many years I feel this book and the research Dr。 Longo has done also substantiates much of Ori’s views。 A little disappointing that it also was a bit of a sales pitch for his specially created and extremely pricey fasting plan。 He wants to help people but doesn’t let people in on a way to do it for themselves? I've read a lot of books on diet and fasting。 I find it interesting that the author only recommends his specific style of fasting, then says (over and over) that you shouldn't do it without a doctor coaching you because the data hasn't been published yet。 I did find his research on how cells protect themselves from disease when fasting to be interesting。 I need to see if his studies have been published since the book came out。 I've read a lot of books on diet and fasting。 I find it interesting that the author only recommends his specific style of fasting, then says (over and over) that you shouldn't do it without a doctor coaching you because the data hasn't been published yet。 I did find his research on how cells protect themselves from disease when fasting to be interesting。 I need to see if his studies have been published since the book came out。 。。。more

The book could use details on why the FMD works, I think it’s because it kick starts ketosis。 Also FMD seems to be basically caloric restriction but within certain foods only, very simple, should have been maybe mentioned more :-) good book overall。

Fascinating, exciting。 As are all books in the diet genre, a bit repetitive, and I was bummed that most of the results presented for impact on Alzheimer's, auto-immune disease, etc。, were all studies in mice, awaiting clinical trials in humans。 However, the core concept of the longevity diet, and the positive effect of periodic use of the fasting mimicking diet, was clearly presented and well supported with lots of good data。 Runs counter to some of the other sources I respect (Ornish, Campbell, Fascinating, exciting。 As are all books in the diet genre, a bit repetitive, and I was bummed that most of the results presented for impact on Alzheimer's, auto-immune disease, etc。, were all studies in mice, awaiting clinical trials in humans。 However, the core concept of the longevity diet, and the positive effect of periodic use of the fasting mimicking diet, was clearly presented and well supported with lots of good data。 Runs counter to some of the other sources I respect (Ornish, Campbell, Greger, Sherzais) in use of oil, specifically olive oil, but it lines up well with other Blue Zones focused material I have read。Fun read, highly recommended。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading the science in The Longevity Diet, which seems to be well executed and well proven in university labs and studies。 I think the book itself could have benefited from a co-author to help make it more accessible for popular audiences。 Having a degree in psychology, which means a background of reading many, many research studies, scientific writing works fine for me, but I think for many readers, this book would come across more dry and not easily digestible 。。。 which is a shame, b I enjoyed reading the science in The Longevity Diet, which seems to be well executed and well proven in university labs and studies。 I think the book itself could have benefited from a co-author to help make it more accessible for popular audiences。 Having a degree in psychology, which means a background of reading many, many research studies, scientific writing works fine for me, but I think for many readers, this book would come across more dry and not easily digestible 。。。 which is a shame, because I can see that the benefits of this diet are vast。 The text is a bit repetitive as Longo goes through the diet's impact on various diseases, but the upside is that this makes it a very quick read。The nuts and bolts are this: periodic limited-calorie fasting with specific food types has lasting and hugely significant impacts on risk factors for cardiovascular, diabetic, and neurological disorders, as well as weight management。 We're talking brief, five-day fasts sometimes as little as twice a year。 Longo provides guidelines for both overall day-to-day eating as well as these periodic fasts。 A sample fasting diet with recipes is provided at the end, though I found some of those recipes a little fussier in ingredients than I envision myself having patience for while in the grips of a severe calorie deficit (read: while hangry)。 Bottom line: the fasts are very short term (just five days) but felt a little intimidating nonetheless。 The science is impressive; I just wish this were paired with a gorgeous, photo-heavy cookbook that made me feel more inspired to tackle the tough climb it takes to pull it off。 I'm sufficiently convinced of the benefits that I'll likely try it at some point。 But sufficiently intimidated that I'm feeling like 。。。 not yet。 。。。more

I really don't understand the necessity of Prof。 Longo to tout his exorbitantly priced "5 day fasting pack" of the company he founded。 Instead of selling industrial packages of pre-made food to aid the 5 day fasting he proposes, he could describe what to eat exactly during those 5 days so anyone interested could prepare the meals for themselves without having to pay $250 for a few premade meals。 I guess he'd rather get an extra from selling unhealthy food packages on top of his $500,000 salary w I really don't understand the necessity of Prof。 Longo to tout his exorbitantly priced "5 day fasting pack" of the company he founded。 Instead of selling industrial packages of pre-made food to aid the 5 day fasting he proposes, he could describe what to eat exactly during those 5 days so anyone interested could prepare the meals for themselves without having to pay $250 for a few premade meals。 I guess he'd rather get an extra from selling unhealthy food packages on top of his $500,000 salary while reducing greatly the people who can benefit from his publicly funded research。 。。。more

I started this one and am stopping。 It’s a giant advertisement and infomercial, as well as a protracted description of the author’s life。 I’m sad to have been taken in, and to have spent even a bit of precious time on this commercial。

Nice book。 I found that the most interesting thing is the map of feeding, where longevity matches certain food habits。 It would be interesting to go deeper in this study。

Some good ideas, but honestly seems one sided。 Hand picked science to support his argument。 Still I do agree with many of his suggestions

I read a few reviews, and I ask myself if I read the same book。 - Prof Longo sounds like he has a big ego。 I didn't sense this。 He always credits his colleagues when necessary and doubts his research by looking for more evidence all the time。 - He sells health products; therefore, his research must be fishy。 It is not true; all shares from his books and health products will be invested in his research。 - His plan is fundamentally another Mediterranean diet。Not really。 The longevity diet might ha I read a few reviews, and I ask myself if I read the same book。 - Prof Longo sounds like he has a big ego。 I didn't sense this。 He always credits his colleagues when necessary and doubts his research by looking for more evidence all the time。 - He sells health products; therefore, his research must be fishy。 It is not true; all shares from his books and health products will be invested in his research。 - His plan is fundamentally another Mediterranean diet。Not really。 The longevity diet might have many points in common with the Med diet, but many are not。- The book is full of disclaimers; why publish it then?My view on this: Prof。 Longo is a scientist, and scientists are never 100% sure and need more and more data。 In particular, prof。 Longo says that not only data are required, but a collaboration of different scientists about one subject。- The longevity diet is hard。Yes, I think it is more challenging than "eating everything in moderation", which has been my copout forever。 Still, it does not work for me as I have an addictive personality and do not understand moderation。 Moreover, it is not scientifically proven that "eating everything in moderation" is how we should eat。 It's too vague, and how can you be moderate with gianduia (hazelnut and chocolate) and gelato?!I want to start this diet to age better and stay as young as possible, but also to see if it helps me with anxiety and minor autoimmune inflammations, such as rosacea and IBS。 If it doesn't, I hope it will help at least with my binge eating, as I don't see myself going voracious over nuts and veggies。 I will update this review with the results in 6-12 months, depending on how I go。 。。。more

Recommend to anyone who is tired of fad diets and erroneous information, and is looking for a sustainable long-term way of improving/optimizing health and longevity。 It's also enlightening about how much food is responsible for our health, and it puts the control back on us。 Recommend to anyone who is tired of fad diets and erroneous information, and is looking for a sustainable long-term way of improving/optimizing health and longevity。 It's also enlightening about how much food is responsible for our health, and it puts the control back on us。 。。。more

The author presents two key diets: 1) the longevity diet and 2) the fasting-mimicking diet。 Both of them are health-promoting and worth considering; they just serve different purposes。 The book contains a lot of invaluable information on what to eat in order to live to 110。 There are even some recipes included at the end of the book。

I gave it three stars, because I think the message about healthy eating and fasting is important。 It's just that the language is a bit specialised - it seemed to me to be so, at least - so I often didn't really understand what was going on。 I saw that if you had less of a certain substance in your body it was good (thanks, graphs!), for example, but I didn't really get why。 I gave it three stars, because I think the message about healthy eating and fasting is important。 It's just that the language is a bit specialised - it seemed to me to be so, at least - so I often didn't really understand what was going on。 I saw that if you had less of a certain substance in your body it was good (thanks, graphs!), for example, but I didn't really get why。 。。。more

Very interesting, although the fmd seems a bit hardcore for most people (and he specifies to check with a doctor before setting out)。 Anyway, I like his points re: eating what your ancestors ate, and also about starving cancer (where had I heard that before?) Otherwise it seems to make sense。 He seems quite down on all meat, except fish, and very big on veggies, legumes and nuts & seeds。 Not so much fruit。 I might try the fmd with my wife at some point (maybe checking with a doctor first), and, Very interesting, although the fmd seems a bit hardcore for most people (and he specifies to check with a doctor before setting out)。 Anyway, I like his points re: eating what your ancestors ate, and also about starving cancer (where had I heard that before?)
