Summary

Perfect for the holidays! A brand-new heartwarming Christmas novel from the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Bookshop on the Corner and Christmas at the Island Hotel

When the department store she works in closes for good, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options。 She doesn’t want to move in with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered Edinburgh life。

Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want Carmen there either。 Her sister has always been sarcastic and difficult。 But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs a retail assistant for his ailing bookshop, so welcoming Carmen might still have some benefits for everyone。

At Sofia’s behest, Carmen is thrown into the daily workings of old Mr。 McCredie’s ancient bookshop on the streets of the old dark city。 Can she use her design skills to revamp the store and bring it back to popularity in time to benefit from Christmas shopping traffic? Can she choose between bad boy literary rock star Blair and quiet Quaker student Oke? And will she heal the rift with the most important people of all: her family?

She creates such a magical, wintry world full of old books and friendship。 This is a slip into warm socks and make hot chocolate type of a cozy read。 I loved the conflict and resolution between the sisters, Carmen and Sofia, which felt natural and well thought out。 Carmen's blossoming relationship with her nieces and nephew was also a highlight。 I wish, however, there was more to the bookshop side of the story! Carmen gets things up and running fairly quickly and I would have liked more tension here。 Maybe the shop is still in danger of bankruptcy, maybe Carmen encounters more obstacles with trying to save the store so close to Christmas。 I liked her relationship with Mr。 McCreadie; it developed into a tender and realistic friendship, which was a surprise。 And I loved the denizens and shop owners of Victoria Street。 More could have been devoted to the sense of community Carmen finds herself in。。。Instead, Colgan creates two romances here that were absolutely tedious。 I didn't particularly take to either Blair or Okee (I listened via audio so no clue how things are spelled) as a romantic interest and I kept waiting for the drama to circle back to the shop or her stained relationship with her sister, rather than focus on whether either guy liked her。 The story relies on a plot device that I really hate, what I call the "Three's Company" syndrome。 Too many easy misunderstandings, miscommunication, and situations that could have been cleared up with one conversation or word。 Instead, it makes the story plod along and we are just waiting for Carmen to gather some nerve and TELL THE GUY HOW SHE FEELS!!Overall, this will give you holiday feelies。 It's a bit formulaic, but I do think well-written for a holiday romance。 She captures Edinburgh in winter so beautifully and clearly has a big soft spot for the city。 The narrator is charming, if you prefer to read via audio。 。。。more

Cosy contentmentThis book was so wonderful and cosy and filled me with utter contentment。 A really beautiful story about love, happiness and family 。 I loved the little twist with the shop owner at the end and how Jenny keeps us guessing, if Carmen will end up with Blairbor One。

Just didn't enjoy the writing。 It was clunky and poorly written。 Had to reread sentences to make sense out of them。 Premise of story appealled but just not well executed。 Just didn't enjoy the writing。 It was clunky and poorly written。 Had to reread sentences to make sense out of them。 Premise of story appealled but just not well executed。 。。。more

I might review this at some point, but ultimately a disappointing read with stuttering chemistry that never got a moment to properly or realistically shine thanks to following a fuckboy side plot for way too long。 Painfully straight and minimal character growth。

The ending was predictable, but a very enjoyable read。

The Christmas Book Shop was a little bit trite, a little bit silly, a little bit comical, quite predictable but still a little bit entertaining。 The best part was the many lovely descriptions of Edinburgh during the Christmas season。 The city sounded so charming and wondrous, and made the book worth reading。 I also listened to the audio at times, and the narrator had the perfect voice, especially for portraying the main character, Carmen, who has just lost her dead-end job and come to Edinburgh The Christmas Book Shop was a little bit trite, a little bit silly, a little bit comical, quite predictable but still a little bit entertaining。 The best part was the many lovely descriptions of Edinburgh during the Christmas season。 The city sounded so charming and wondrous, and made the book worth reading。 I also listened to the audio at times, and the narrator had the perfect voice, especially for portraying the main character, Carmen, who has just lost her dead-end job and come to Edinburgh as a last resort。 I recommend the book to anyone in the mood for a lighthearted, lightweight, easy read at Christmastime。 。。。more

This is a perfect holiday read。 Warm and cozy, Colgan's descriptions make you feel as though you are part of the throng walking down Victoria St。 enjoying the decorations, looking into the shop windows, and nipping into the coffee shop for some hot cocoa。Sofia and Carmen are two sisters that have been at odds for years。 Sofia was an over achiever with a law degree, and a perfect marriage, job, house, and kids。 Carmen didn't go to college and works in a department store in the town where she grew This is a perfect holiday read。 Warm and cozy, Colgan's descriptions make you feel as though you are part of the throng walking down Victoria St。 enjoying the decorations, looking into the shop windows, and nipping into the coffee shop for some hot cocoa。Sofia and Carmen are two sisters that have been at odds for years。 Sofia was an over achiever with a law degree, and a perfect marriage, job, house, and kids。 Carmen didn't go to college and works in a department store in the town where she grew up。 She runs in the opposite direction from her sister since she feels inferior and thinks that people must be talking about her and how little she has done with her life。 Carmen has so little confidence, even when someone shows some interest in her, she can't believe that they would like a person like herself since she has nothing to offer。 When Carmen loses her job, her mom convinces Sofia to let her live with her and help her find a job in Edinburgh。 If that sounds like a recipe for disaster, it might just be because it is。I have never been disappointed by any of the Colgan books that I have read。 Hmm, I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that she lives in an actual castle in Scotland。 Cue the bagpipes and dig in for an enjoyable holiday tale。 。。。more

Feeling a tad christmassy already? 😉 Ho Ho Ho🤶Well, I was as you can tell by my book choice, and I liked it。 This is a holiday concoction starring an imposter, a dendrologist and a naïve sister of a control freak delivering a deeper message on love and acceptance。What worked for me are the following points: ❄️) Jenny Colgan induced me to Edinburgh, Scotland, which was the perfect infrastructure with its magical streets and ancient castles。 So, the scene setting was just gorgeous! ❄️) Carmen as t Feeling a tad christmassy already? 😉 Ho Ho Ho🤶Well, I was as you can tell by my book choice, and I liked it。 This is a holiday concoction starring an imposter, a dendrologist and a naïve sister of a control freak delivering a deeper message on love and acceptance。What worked for me are the following points: ❄️) Jenny Colgan induced me to Edinburgh, Scotland, which was the perfect infrastructure with its magical streets and ancient castles。 So, the scene setting was just gorgeous! ❄️) Carmen as the main protagonist had to save a rustic library from going bankrupt launching a bunch of creative measures。 Who wouldn’t want this opportunity once in a lifetime?❄️) A hidden family saga that led all the way to Germany。 ❄️) A fine selection of references to children’s Christmas books。 Thank you very much。 This came just in time。 A feel-good novel that served its purpose for me with its easy-to-consume language and little twist in the love story making the predictable process a bit unpredictable。 Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more
