Summary

Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith。

Holly Golightly is a glittering socialite mover and shaker: generally upwards, sometimes sideways and, every now and then, down。 She's up all night drinking cocktails and breaking hearts。 She's a shoplifter, a delight, a drifter, a tease。 In short, an icon。 Truman Capote's most famous work, Breakfast at Tiffany's is the ultimate ode to dreamers。

'The most perfect writer of my generation 。。。 I would not have changed two words of Breakfast at Tiffany's' Norman Mailer

Our story features a window into the saucy life of a beautiful 19-year-old profligate young woman named Holly Golightly who lives in a York City apartment。 Holly happens to reside in the same building as our narrator。 A nice touch we see a few times concerns an interesting card affixed to Holly's mailbox: 'Miss Holiday Golightly, Traveling,' it reads, leaving the narrator wondering why the word 'traveling' is there since Holly was certainly not traveling at that time。 Our story progresses swiftl Our story features a window into the saucy life of a beautiful 19-year-old profligate young woman named Holly Golightly who lives in a York City apartment。 Holly happens to reside in the same building as our narrator。 A nice touch we see a few times concerns an interesting card affixed to Holly's mailbox: 'Miss Holiday Golightly, Traveling,' it reads, leaving the narrator wondering why the word 'traveling' is there since Holly was certainly not traveling at that time。 Our story progresses swiftly due to Capote's delightfully detailed writing and clarity of verse。 Stepping into Holly's social realm may seem familiar or unfamiliar to some, but the experience is well worth the read。Holly 'sustains' herself by dating rich men, though the details to this arrangement remain, at times, somewhat elusive。 As Truman Capote stated in an interview in 1968: "Holly Golightly was not precisely a call girl。 She had no job, but accompanied expense-account men to the best restaurants and night clubs, with the understanding that her escort was obligated to give her some sort of gift, perhaps jewelry or a check 。。。 if she felt like it, she might take her escort home for the night。 So these girls are the authentic American geishas, and they're much more prevalent now than in 1943 or 1944, which was Holly's era。" 。。。more

A delightful little read

I’m not sure what I think of this book。 I read a translated version and maybe that affected how I saw it。 It started getting a little more acceptable as it went on but all in all it was whatever。 Maybe a 2。5?

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This story has not aged well and is altogether a tedious one with unlikeable, self indulgent characters。 Not sure if Capote's style of writing is for me but I will read more of his work before throwing in the paper towel。 This story has not aged well and is altogether a tedious one with unlikeable, self indulgent characters。 Not sure if Capote's style of writing is for me but I will read more of his work before throwing in the paper towel。 。。。more

Listened to the Audible version read by Michael C。 Hall。 Overall exquisite performance and a bittersweet story。

The original story is creepier than the movie。 Definitely not the best audiobook to have playing loudly in your car due to language。

Holly Golightly really is one of the most amazing eccentric characters to ever been written。 I love how the movie almost completely copied her from the book, Capote really made her come to life and it was just a great bittersweet read。

My first Capote was this glittering but often garish gem of a story。 Really a character study, Tiffany's is as much a time capsule as it is a timeless classic about a glamorous girl fated for obscurity。 Holly Golightly is now an iconic creation that has been reimagined and interpreted through countless iterations。 The author meant for Marilyn Monroe to play her but Audrey Hepburn immortalized her image as a flighty and frivolous figure with dreams of decadence but condemned to a listless life of My first Capote was this glittering but often garish gem of a story。 Really a character study, Tiffany's is as much a time capsule as it is a timeless classic about a glamorous girl fated for obscurity。 Holly Golightly is now an iconic creation that has been reimagined and interpreted through countless iterations。 The author meant for Marilyn Monroe to play her but Audrey Hepburn immortalized her image as a flighty and frivolous figure with dreams of decadence but condemned to a listless life of rootless whimsy。 She is a fascinating subject as we slowly get to know the secrets behind the facade she has built for herself。 She is as mysterious and aloof as her nondescript brownstone。 Even her orange cat is a nameless embellishment that doesn't truly belong to her。 The prose is harsh and unfettered while still managing a casual elegance akin to its protagonist。 Capote uses an even more unknowable narrator that Holly calls Fred as the lens through which we view this dazzling disaster of a woman。 She's actually only a girl and her descriptors conjured more of an Edie Sedgwick facsimile than they did an impression of Marilyn but the process of working out who this young lady is and what makes her tick was a bemusing trip through New York City in the forties。 There are plenty of glaring terms of the time that feel authentic to the period but are off-putting by today's standards。 If you can get past the offensive vernacular, there is something wistful and tender at its core。 Breakfast at Tiffany's does not seem particularly revolutionary now but in its time, a story with such a comprehensive cast that accurately reflects the diversity of a city like New York would have been boldly progressive。 This is clearly indicated by the changes made for the film。 I certainly plan on reading more of Capote's work and this was a charming and almost haunting portrait that served me well as an introduction to this classic queer author and his signature style。 Tiffany's is a worthy addition to the canon of American Literature that memorializes a glamorous but stilted setting in all its glitz and grime。 。。。more

I first read Capote's novella "Breakfast at Tiffany's" about 13 or 15 years ago and at the time I didn't appreciate it。 I think I was looking for Audrey Hepburn and no, you won't find her here but what you will find is an in-depth, exquisitely and at times heartbreakingly human character study。 For me, this story is about reinvention and second chances and as an imperfect human myself, I can dig it。 One of my favorite lines:"I'm very scared, Buster。 Yes, at last。 Because it could go on forever。 I first read Capote's novella "Breakfast at Tiffany's" about 13 or 15 years ago and at the time I didn't appreciate it。 I think I was looking for Audrey Hepburn and no, you won't find her here but what you will find is an in-depth, exquisitely and at times heartbreakingly human character study。 For me, this story is about reinvention and second chances and as an imperfect human myself, I can dig it。 One of my favorite lines:"I'm very scared, Buster。 Yes, at last。 Because it could go on forever。 Not knowing what's yours until you've thrown it away。" (p。 86, Breakfast at Tiffany's)Also, as romantic as Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard kissing in the rain is, I actually love Capote's ending a lot better。(Personal note: I love this book even though I didn't like Holly as a person。 And I kinda love that - it's okay to have unlikeable characters - in fact I would argue that we gain more from reading books about unlikeable characters than we do likeable ones)。 。。。more

I am so heavily influenced by the film, I couldn’t judge this novella objectively。 I’m rounding up。 I have to wonder what it would have been like to read it before watching the movie。 I can tell you, though, should you want to explore the writing, do just that。 The audiobook doesn’t do it justice。 The narrator is completely off the mark with the voice of Holly Golightly, I don’t doubt Capote and Hepburn (my idol), were rolling in their graves。

An interesting look at human nature。 Very visual language- an interesting listen。 I know Truman Capote is considered a classic but this was not my cup of tea。
